The potato salad and mac and cheese were very bland and lacked seasoning. The beans were a little undercooked and still had a bit of a hard texture. The coleslaw was an interesting take with pineapple and walnuts, but despite the unique ingredients, it also lacked flavor. The drink selection was also surprisingly limited to canned beverages. Food, pros: the brisket was smoked pretty much to perfection. Cons: when I go to a BBQ I am accustomed to a flight of sauces with a range of flavors. This place stakes it all on one sauce. That's a bold decision, and only works if that sauce is transcendently good. It was just fine. Service: excellent Ambiance: a nice smokehouse theme despite being in a strip mall. Ok, yelp is usually pretty accurate, but this time, NOT SO MUCH! This place has 4.5 and I couldn't possibly give it more than 2. The brisket had a crust, but it was a burnt tasting crust. It was NOT juicy AT ALL and no smoke ring. The ribs were so so. They weren't dry like the brisket, but really not seasoned well at all, truly a bad flavor. The only drinks were bottled water, canned soft drinks and canned Brisket tea. I don't drink soft drinks and canned tea, water was fine but not my 1st choice. The beans were good, the potato salad had a sweetness I don't particularly care for and the Mac and cheese was overcooked pasta and A LOT of cheese sauce. Overall, not a good place to eat. read more

Skinny Pig We weren't originally planning on driving thru Texas en route from Las Cruces to Carlsbad. But, after seeing as how it was just an additional hour or so to the road trip, it seemed worthwhile as this would be our first chance to get our hands--and mouths--on some real Texas BBQ. After consulting the Yelp Gods, we had decided on Desert Oak BBQ as our destination of choice for the best Q in El Paso. However, unbeknownst to us and Waze™, they had evidently left these digs for larger ones down the street and had been replaced by a young upstart catering/food truck turned brick-and-mortar Skinny's BBQ. The Good: *We met the owner and two of his kids who were helping out over the holiday break, and they were really great salt of the earth people. This is also a veteran and Latino-owned business for those who care. *All of the Q was outstanding. Even the pulled pork, which I'm very picky about, was really delicious. The brisket was juicy and smoky, as were the ribs and chicken. *Their housemade seven pepper sausage is really what stole the show for me, as it was smoked perfectly and had a nice spicy kick. *All their Q comes out dry (the way it should), and there's no reason to remember to ask for SoS (Sauce on Side). *Coleslaw is made with pecans and raspberries and was utterly fantastic. Sweet, crunchy, and just the right amount of mayo. Maybe the best 'slaw we've ever had. *Fried Twinkies® were a fat asses (i.e., yours truly) dream come true... Perfectly crispy fried twinkies topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with melty chocolate. If they have it available, you must try it! Evidently, they sell out of this quite a bit. *Outdoor seating The Meh: *Potato salad was, well, potato salad... *The chorizo beans were also disappointing. Despite having chorizo in them, they really just had zero flavor and very little salt. I'm hoping this was a fluke and not a regular thing. However, I will say, at least the beans were cooked, which is more than I can say for some BBQ places I've been to. *No beer or alcohol but evidently, you can BYOB. I'm guessing that's a TX thing? The Ugly: *D-bag reviewers that give one-star reviews for a BBQ place selling out of their meats. I hate to break it to you, but if your favorite BBQ place isn't selling out, then they probably suck. Portions are a good size for how much you pay. Brisket was a little dried out and lacked flavor. The pulled pork was too salty and I couldn't finish it. The ribs were fantastic. Tender and the sauce used on the ribs is excellent. They were out of chicken which was a disappointment. The BBQ beans were very good with bacon and pieces of jalapenos to give it a little kick. They were so good I had two portions. The potatoes in the potato salad were undercooked and the pieces cut too big for my liking. Otherwise it was okay. Another great BBQ spot has arrived in El Paso - Skinny's BBQ! I dropped by on Thu to pick up some food but when I showed up at 7pm, there was a "Sold Out" sign - business was really good & they had run out of food!). Dropped back by on Fri, around 6pm. When I walked into the location that formally housed Desert Oak BBQ, I asked if brisket was the best option to try and was informed that only ribs and pulled pork were still available so I ordered the "Texas Two Step" which includes two meats, two sides and a drink. Took the food home and was super happy with the quality of the food! The ribs literally fell off the bone! The pulled pork was tasty with lots of great spices and the bbq complimented it perfectly! After seeing a person post on FB I knew I had to order El Bravo which featured chunks of brisket (think burnt ends flavor) with deliciously smoked brisket, Mac n cheese, pineapple.slaw and chile con queso all nestled inside a seasame seed bun Because this sandwich was a mouthful, it will be messy. I had a side of potato salad with it and only gripe was there was a couple chunks that were a bit hard. Other than that I could find no fault with my meal. My brother and I drove from Pensacola, FL to Los Angeles and we stopped at as many bbq places along the way as we could. Skinny's NAILED it. Yes, they were out of the sausage and chicken but the ribs and brisket and pulled pork and beans and sauce (perfect blend of sweet and lil spice) were all-time. Well, the BBQ was great. But what was really impressive was the potato salad. Nobody in El Paso makes good potato salad. The place is very cozy so if you go when it's busy, there may be no place to sit. There are no fountain drinks - all of the sodas will be out of a can; but they're cold and it kind of gives you a backyard feeling. Bread is straight out of a loaf of bread bag and it was soft and fresh Overall since I'm on the very far west side getting to this place takes a bit of a journey; but I will say that when I'm out this way this will be my go to barbecue place. read more

Pulled pork and bbq sauce over in house made chips, lettuce, cheese, beans, tomatoes and sour cream. LOVED them, will have them again! Unassuming exterior in a strip mall and the windows are tinted so you can't see in. I don't know if that's just how Swell Pasoans are or if they were just super cheerful but what a great customer service experience. What's better than great customer service however, is elite food. I got the three meat combo (on the menu as the Texas Trinity) with ribs, brisket, and chicken. Potato salad and Mac and cheese were my sides. With a drink, my total came out to around $20. The ribs were the best ribs I've ever had. Juicy and tender with a nice smoke ring. I'm going to get a full rack for myself next time. The brisket was phenomenally juicy and flavorful as well. They were like Aaron Rodgers level if the ribs were GOAT Tom Brady level I'm not the biggest chicken guy, but the rub they use made my leg phenomenal. The skin was crispy and the rub permeates through to the chicken. Even as a non chicken believer, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The sauce: more watery than what I usually ascribe Texas bbq sauce to be like, but it was better than I could've dreamed. It was spicy and dark and I'm definitely getting extra sauce next time. Mac and cheese was a top 5 mac I've had in my life. This place does not duck around. I swear. Potato salad is like chicken for me. I get why other people like it, but for me it's not my favorite.
