Desperate to tame the overgrown bush I call my eyebrows (yeah, save it, perverts), I walked into Skinsations on a rainy Friday afternoon. Once I entered the room after some difficulty with the door, I asked the woman who had been watching me whether she took walk-ins. "Well, I have a full schedule today, what did you want done?" "My eyebrows," I said, pointing to the overgrowth of hair where my brows had once been. "That's easy enough!" She quickly explained that her next appointment was running late and whisked me behind the divider into the other half of the room. It was only then that Leslie and I exchanged introductions and she gave me the fastest and most painless waxing job I had ever had done! After ten minutes, she handed me a mirror. Not a single hair was out of place; my brows were tidy and nothing close to the monstrosity they had been. All for the same price I had been paying before! Leslie likes to say that she has an extraction addiction, and let me tell you, I'm more than happy to be her enabler. I've had my fair share of facials at boutiquey spas, chains, and mom and pop spots (Skinsations falls more towards the latter end of the spectrum)--and what really sets Leslie apart from other estheticians I've seen is that she not only clears up my acne, she has some magical way of facilitating healing, so I don't look like I have chicken pox for 2 weeks afterwards. In fact, I can leave from a facial with her and actually go somewhere rather than running home to hide (with the help of a little concealer, that is), and by the next day, there's hardly a red spot in sight. Leslie also does a great job on my eyebrows--a task I'm too neurotic to trust just anyone with. She's a self-described perfectionist, takes her job very seriously, and seems to really love what she does. She's also a character and loves to chat, which I think is fun, but if you're hoping to retreat to your Zen place during an appointment with Leslie, you may have to communicate this with her. This post is actually years overdue. I went to see Leslie several times, a few years ago, when I went to school a mere several longish blocks away. I don't even remember how I came across Skinsations, but I'm so glad I did when I did! I've been to aestheticians all over the Bay Area, DC/DMV, NYC, and many places in between, and have spent upwards of $50 plus on single waxings at the best of the best in these big cities, but NO ONE has come CLOSE to the wonders Leslie performed on my brows during my years in Noho. Literally, her work makes that of every other aesthetician I've gone to seem mediocre at best and it's really unfortunate for me because I haven't lived in the PV region for.. 2 or so years now (I live in NYC--you would think a girl could have more comparable options!). I went to get my eyebrows done with a friend and i had read such good reviews about this place so i decided to give it a try. It is by appointment only so you have to call to make one with the woman that runs it, Leslie. Because it was my first time getting my brows waxed, i was really nervous that it was going to hurt or she would misshape them or something awful was going to happen. However, the minute i walked in, i was just completely blown away. Leslie was just so friendly and talkative (even though we went at 10am) and walked us through everything she was doing. The waxing did not hurt at all and just felt like you were taking tape off your skin. She really took her time waxing and took about 15 minutes a person to make sure everything was perfect. i highly recommend her because she knows her stuff and has been working in the industry for 20+ years. Fair warning, it takes multiple tries to reach her seeing she is a one woman business, however, once you do and even talk to her on the phone you'll understand what i'm talking about. Although it took so long to reach her, i was absolutely blown away and do not regret the effort it took. If you are hesitant, dont be. She does waxing, makeup, and facials -- I should say, REALLY REALLY GOOD facials -- and knows her way around everything else in the beauty biz like you would not believe. Leslie is very sweet and makes you feel very comfortable. During waxing, she screams for you making things a bit less painless. Nonetheless, I walked out with some hairs still. She also didn't bother to put anything on my skin after the waxing. I found it very overpriced. I've had amazing waxes done back home for $40. Applause, please! I am happy to turn the management of my brows over to the amazingly talented Leslie. I'd had help some years ago but have been trying on my own since the staff changed where I used to go. My problem isn't too much brow - it's too little, too sparse, too broad...you get it. Where to start? So I just let them grow while I pondered seeking an expert again. And am I glad I did. I showed up at her salon with all the brow I could offer and she was thrilled to be able to start from scratch. Without reservation, it was worth the wait and search. And I have Yelp to thank, actually. It was the rave reviews here that pointed me in her direction. My brows are lovely - beautiful curve, just the right arch, and perfect shape for my face.
