I was under the care of Brittany Eberly for three years. At my visit in January, she prescribed Fluorouracil to be applied to my face twice daily for four weeks. She did not mention any precautions and insisted that the full four-week course was necessary. Within three weeks, I developed severe swelling around my eyes, along with blisters and bleeding under my eyes. Today at 4:3 p.m., I went to the office seeking guidance on what cream I could use to relieve the constant pain and blistering. The front desk receptionist was very pleasant and asked me to wait while she sought advice from Brittany. She explained that Brittany was with a patient and might see me afterward; otherwise, another medical assistant might help. After waiting 15 minutes, the receptionist informed me that Brittany suggested I purchase a cream sold at the office. I asked whether Brittany would like to look at my face, and the answer was no. I was told she would see me at my follow-up appointment in a month. It would have taken Brittany no more than three minutes to look at my blisters, swollen eyes, and skin and provide appropriate advice. read more

Dr. Callahan is the worst doctor I have ever had. Her attitude was very obvious; she did not care about patient and the problems. I had a spot on my face that was itchy and bumpy for a few years. She blatantly said that she doesn't know what it is and prescribed hydrocortisone, which did absolutely nothing. She insisted on making another appointment even so she just notified me that there is nothing she can do. The most unpleasant thing was the way she talked to me as if I was a first grader and she was my teacher. Total disrespect and neglect. I would not recommend that doctor to anyone. read more

Amy Hoover was excellent at helping me understand which toxin was most suitable for my needs when I initially met her. She ended up being able to get me in right away for injections. We decided to try out Dysport which was quickly and efficiently injected by Dr. Callahan who made the entire experience very comfortable. II had 55 units of dysport injected at $16/ Unit and ended up paying $880. The entire staff that I was introduced to were by far the most competent and welcoming in the industry that I have encountered to date. I do highly recommend going to SkinSmart Dermatology as I will be returning for my next round of Dysport. read more

After my most recent visit to Skin"smart" Dermatology, it was Brittany, PA who left me with a horrible experience. I chose this practice because a family member used to work there and had the utmost respect for Dr. Callahan as a doctor as being the best in the industry. Unfortunately, she didn't treat my condition, so I had to schedule with someone else. It's a long story but I was charged as though she were an MD, at the highest tier. She didn't want to do much at my appointment, in terms of treatment, because my face was so broken out, so only prescribed a lotion and wanted me to come back in 4 weeks to put me on Retin A. Didn't touch my face. Didn't put a light to my face. Peeked closely at it once for a brief second. I ended up going back about 3 weeks later because my face was still swelling up. I went in thinking this was a follow up appointment, she'd prescribe the Retin A like she said she would and that would be it. Here's how it went: She suggested I come in when my face was broken out (when I did in my fist appointment, she wouldn't really help me and told me to come back in 4 weeks). She said that we needed to figure out why I was picking at my face. She suggested having a microdermabrasion. Over and over, she asked "What do you want me to do?" And, at one point, "Well, do you want to take your makeup off?" She was so unprofessional and condescending with me. And, why didn't one of the two nurses who came in take my makeup off?? The impression I got from her was like I was interrupting her day. I just had no words. I was flabbergasted and disgusted. I had been dealing with this confusing, scary, ugly condition on my face that I'm so embarrassed about and this is how someone in her profession is treating a patient. I called the morning of my appointment to confirm the practice accepted my new insurance only to find out they do not. I asked very specificall, what would the cost be if paying direct, without insurance. I was told since I am an existing patient t the least it would be is $85.00, but if they needed to do any biopsy the total out of pocket could be $192.00. I go to check out and handed a bill for almost $300.00. I explained I just spoke to someone in their office and was told the most I would have to pay would be $192.00. the office manager said that someone in their call center made a mistake and there was nothing she could do. so I'm very specific, ask all the questions before coming in, confirm with the office what the maximum I will need to pay only to find its almost double. Last week was the first time I visited SkinSmart. My initial impression is as follows: As soon as you walk in the door I felt like a little uncomfortable because the many of the seats in the waiting room face the entrance door. Everyone looking up to see who's coming in the door next. That said, once I was settled and checked in a felt much better. When I went into the room for my appointment, the nurse who took me back was very nice and welcoming. The girl at the front desk was really nice. I didn't have a long wait. I scheduled an appointment for IPL but ended up Googling the do's and don'ts before IPL and decided to wait before making the final decision on IPL. I'm a little too nervous of potential things that can go wrong. When weighing the pro's and con's of IPL, I decided my skin is not that bad where I would risk making it worse at this point. Mind you, I hear many great things about IPL but everyone should be aware of the side effects which were not talked about during my appointment. If I do decide to have IPL done, I would trust the woman who consulted me. She was kind and did not push products or treatments on me like other places have. Additionally, if the time lapse between appointments has been 3+ years per visit, you are considered a new patient. Although it is a common practice for healthcare companies to consider one to be a new patient after 3years, charging an extra "new patient fee", which is NOT covered by insurance, is not a common practice, but this is the scheme SkinSmart uses. I've been a patient at SkinSmart Dermatology since moving to Sarasota 2 years ago. In those 2 years I've had medical appointments with Molly and Dr. Callahan. I've also had cosmetic appointments with Angie and Dr. Callahan. The office is beautiful and the providers and staff really care about their patients. I've been very happy with the results of my cosmetic appointments. I've had Botox/Dysport, fillers, peels, and laser procedures. Dr. Callahan knows what she's doing. She's truly an artist and makes you look your best (refreshed, younger, softer, happier). I moved to Sarasota from Chicago. I was a patient at a dermatology practice in Chicago. The feeling there was cold like I was just another patient. There was no loyalty, warm feeling, or compassion. That is not the feeling I get at SkinSmart Dermatology. Very over priced. In my opinion there is nothing unique about Dr. Callahan's injecting technique that supports the high price she charges. I use to be a regular patient/customer, but she does not value the loyalty of her clients, so I started looking elsewhere. I had a few expensive services done (example: lips) that I was very dissatisfied with the outcome and even after raising concern, my concern was brushed off and dismissed. I was initially referred there from another dermatologist because I has squamous cell skin cancer under my fingernail which needed to be removed with Mohs surgery. Only certain doctors are trained in this precision form of surgery. The outcome was very good. Since then, they found a very early melanoma on my arm. This place is very predatory. I'm extremely disappointed. I went in to get a simple skin check, as I had a couple of moles I wanted to get removed. They ended up only removing one (even though I asked it they could remove a few that were bothering me) As they were doing the procedure, they asked me nonchalantly, if I would want to get it biopsied. I was unsure if It was even necessary, I didn't really care about getting it biopsied, since I just wanted it to be taken off, so I hesitated. It was presented super casually, as if it was just standard procedure going along with the mole removal so I just said sure... they failed to mention any additional cost for the biopsy.... Afterwards, I pay for the procedure. The woman at the desk said nothing to me about any other charges. I thought I was all set, I went on my way and thought nothing more about it. A month later I get surprised with a bill in the mail for nearly $300 from the lab that examined the biopsy. No one told me to expect a bill in the mail, or even that there would be any extra charges. Nothing! Needless to say, I won't be going back. I have been here several times now and my appointments are always rushed. I am literally asking questions while the pa is halfway out the door, it's very awkward. I have heard great things about drcallahan, but she is very difficult to see. It's very hard to see any doctor here in general. The last time I made an appt stating exactly why I was coming in (simple mole removal/biopsy). At that appt they then said I would need to come back for a consultation with the doctor. I thought this was the consultation! So then I would need a third visit for the procedure. Mind you I have an $85 copay for a specialist, so it literally cost me over $250 for a consultation, not including any procedure costs. I called and explained my frustrations and they said they would have to get back to me. Meanwhile, while driving home I saw a sign down the street for Dr. Sax dermatology. I called them and they literally got me in and saw me the same day! They took their time and even sent me home with samples. What a huge difference. I was a patient for 4 years. I had skin checks twice yearly by the nurse practitioner. My experience was always wonderful. Brooke Robbins took her time, was very thorough and listened to my concerns. Unfortunately, she left the practice. Six months ago, I had melanoma. So my next skin check appointment I made with Dr. Callahan. VERY DISAPPOINTED. She came into the room quickly, she talked to someone in her ear piece while examining me, and I never felt I had the opportunity to ask about a few skin issues I was experiencing and out the door she went. I will NOT return to this practice. I am switching and going back to the nurse practitioner's care by Brooke Robbins at Milam Bogart in Sarasota. I got a mole removed that Dr Callahan wanted to have a biopsy done on. It was very very painful to have removed. I walked out of that office saying I never wanted to do that again because of how bad it hurt! I had another mole that needed removed but waited a few years because of the pain I felt with my first removal. I finally got it done today by another doctor and I had ZERO pain! The doctor told me today I should not feel pain! I would not recommend anyone to see Dr Callahan. Not only did the procedure hurt more than it should have she was not professional or friendly. I had a very unfortunate experience before I could even get through the door. I just moved to Florida and need a new dermatologist to continue my treatment with accutane, which I started two months ago. I was told by the office staff that the dermatologist would not continue my prescription written by the doctor where I used to live, but would instead have to "start over" with an entire six months' of treatment. They insisted on the phone that the doctor treats patients "herself, and for exactly six months. No more and no less". I'm already almost halfway through the course. It is a powerful medication, and the literature doesn't recommend prescribing more than is needed. More and more recommendations seem to be advocating for dosage based on individual presentations and responses, and in fact, "eighty-five percent of patients who receive a dose of 0.5-1.0 mg/kg/day are virtually clear of their acne by 16 weeks"(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2835909/pdf/de0103_0162.pdf). How can they dictate that I would HAVE to start over and complete another six full months of treatment before the doctor has even seen my face? I'm not sure if the office staff was just misinformed about this supposed "policy," but I am very concerned by what they told me and what it may mean in terms of patient safety. How can they possibly know how long I would "need" to be on the drug if they do not know what my acne looks like now or even what dosage I am taking? Everyone responds to the medication differently, so the "cookie cutter" approach that the office staff said is mandatory just doesn't seem "SkinSmart" to me. read more

I have been getting Botox and fillers for more than 20 years. This office is the most disorganized, overbooked, patronizing dermatologist I have ever had the displeasure of visiting. She has a beautiful office for which she has to pay rent, so she charges a whole lot for services you can have done Elsewhere for Less, with the same quality.
