And a shout out to my yelpie Bridget W. and my trippy Mette for both cluing me onto this veritable hostel paradise! THE SETUP So what happened is on my flight out of Stockholm, Sweden, I ended up with a one (1) day layover in Copenhagen before going on to San Francisco. Now, this was PLANNED - I knew I had the layover: it was either this or pay $400 more for the next least expensive round trip between San Francisco and Stockholm (and back). As it turned out, I was already spending 10 days in the Baltic States with friends, hitting Sweden, Estonia, Russia and Finland. Unfortunately, there was no time in that itinerary to hit Denmark (nor Norway, for that matter, though technically, although also part of "Scandinavia", Norway is not a Baltic state). So an extra stop on the return leg in Copenhagen for a full day presented itself to me and I was happy to take it. DOWNTOWN DISTRICT AND CLOSE TO AIRPORT As soon as I jetted back into Copenhagen Airport (my 2nd time here in addition to my 1st two (2) hour layover in this airport on way to Stockholm), I jumped into the rail-car at the adjacent train station. Not more than 12 mins, I was at the downtown Central Train Station, and only a block and a half from Urban House! And most of the time I would be on a walk-a-bout and not in the room anyways, so I didn't want to waste my money there. The room didn't have a TV anyways - entertainment was outside of the room. ENTERTAINMENT! ..and speaking of entertainment, Urban House had a full-on bar / cafe / "Student Union"-feel open area at street level. In fact, the guy serving beers, took a quick break so he could check me in. The gal that was serving breakfast the next day was the one who checked me out: as it turns out, a good consolidation of tasks combined in their multi-talented staff. I ventured out in the afternoon and evening (twice actually) to grab some excellent Thai food back in the Train Station. And then again to a bar a few blocks away that was hosting a Jazz festival. There was plenty to do, places to eat, immerse oneself into the night life, all within blocks of Urban House. No car needed. THE ROOM As mentioned no TV, but that was not missed. Standard rooms are on the smaller side, manageable for a short stay but not ideal for longer visits. We regretted not upgrading to the Executive Suite, which includes access to a private lounge with city views, complimentary drinks, and daily tapas. In hindsight, it really would've paid for itself. The pool is in the basement, but it's a nice feature, especially for kids needing a break after a day of sightseeing. There's also a well-equipped fitness center. Overall, it's a nice place to stay, especially if you have children. The complimentary breakfast is generous and served for 3 hours each morning. It's clean, comfortable, helpful staff and good location.

Whether it was guest busy bodies or whether it was way too serious staff employees, some folks decided to upbraid me for my parking a rented Tivoli bike near the entrance (with 17 other law breakers similarly feeling bike havoc) and another admonished me for walking two steps into a no shoes part of pool locker room. I just left the area. You guys ever hear of "vacation"? And maybe it was just an unfair fashion moment for a woman out on the convention hall town but one night I came to the hotel and around 8 o'clock was shocked to see there was a woman dressed for all the world like a courtesan. I realize she was just dressing in a very provocative manner to garner attention and she wasn't a professional but boy did she look shockingly inappropriate for a family hotel. Actually any civilized hotel. And trust me there are plenty of kids to liven up at the hotel. If you like that kind of thing.h It is an industrial mega complex with zero charm or intimacy in my view. And it has zero, zip, nadda to do with Tivoli. $7 for a minibar Coke? Nope.It was that one night but at checkout days later, I was asked if I took k anything from the minibar. Well I did t learn my lesson and was parched so I grabbed another coke. Told her. Just back home and see a charge for $13.26. Am I cheap? No. Am i making a big deal over a hotel's looking to get a little more out of me after the nearly $1,700 for five days stay after charging two other charges for $23.45 for a day's bike rental and the same $23.45 price for a two or three hour rental? Not really - all I know is I never had to keep a sharp eye on these kinds of costs in decades of staying at other real Danish hotels in town. One of the few plusses concerned staff springing into interest when i reported an elderly patron on the 7th floor crashing to the floor in some kind of distress. Another was checking me in at 11:45 am instead of the requisite 3 pm. They were able to tell me, in fact, the exact time the cleaning person r tested the room. Efficiency or micromanaging every time is money minute to the kroner? Which leads me to the fact I was placed on one of the highest floors, with a two full length Overlook Hotel length floor from the Shining to add to my exhaustion after hiking to the hotel industrial park at days end.
