I've now been a boarder at Sky Ranch for over 2 years, and can honestly share that it's heaven on Earth. I've had my Arabian gelding for over a decade plus, and when his former boarding facility closed I was so stressed to find that magical place that lets "horses be horses". Sky Ranch is the bees knees, it understands horses true nature. My boy is out on a large pasture with a herd of friends 24/7 turn out in the Spring /Summer and evening turn in the Winter to well cleaned and drained stalls. He's allowed to free graze, gets the highest quality hay and alfalfa daily, plus owner provided grain/supplements and meds fed by Jon (huge solid rock of support) and Franny (who is the kindest human you will ever know); both live on site. Big hearts. Serious animal lovers. The real deal. Community is important and the trails are off the hook amazing (vistas, meadows , creek crossings, old growth forest, alders, resident owls and all the flora and fauna of the PNW) looking for community for your horse and yourself, Sky Ranch is the real deal, truly a unicorn in the equestrian world, and so close to Portland. Jon cares deeply for the herd, and has a personal connection to your horse and their quirks and personality; it's truly peace of mind because if anything feels off, he's huge on communication. One of the best experiences in my life - I found Sky Ranch through Airbnb Experiences when I was booking a place to live in Oregon. Being a city girl all my life, I never had the chance to ride horses and honestly if you've never done it before YOU just got to! Come to Sky Ranch and you won't be disappointed! As a horse boarding stable, there are many different kinds here and all of them are absolute sweethearts! Jon, our guide, is extremely knowledgable about the horses and gave us a tour of his land. He lives on a lot of acres allowing the horses to run free, graze, and just be horses. The whole place is extremely soothing, it was a nice change from a busy city life. I loved how quiet and beautiful the scenery was. Just imagine, the smell of fresh air with horses grazing left and right. After the tour, we were taught how to saddle, and clean a horse's hoof. Then we finally got to learn how to ride a horse. Jon was patient and kind while teaching us "newbies" on how to ride properly and not to hurt the horse. He allowed us to lead the horse from the pasture and into the stables, and my favorite horse has to be Arthur (the one we rode). Arthur is the cutest horse ever, we first saw him rolling around in the grass then instantly falling asleep. He's also super gentle and I thank him for putting up with me and my shaky steering. I'll definitely come back here again to hike his trails or ride horses! I thought this would be an oasis for my horse, but it certainly wasn't. The trails are beautiful, and were the primary reason I chose to move my horse here. The women who board their horses here are all lovely. And that's about the only good thing I can say about Sky Ranch Stables. I noticed my horse losing weight almost immediately. (He was at a very healthy weight when we arrived.) I figured it probably had to do with being out, getting more exercise, and having to share hay with horses instead of having his own in a turnout and in his stall at night. At my request, the owner said he would put alfalfa in my horse's stall to eat while he was in for his grain each day. Three weeks after we arrived, I saddled him for the first time. I was alarmed at how much weight he had lost. His ribs and hip bones were prominent. My horse has never been underweight and has always been an easy keeper. Forty one days after we came to Sky Ranch, I had a vet out to see him for his annual exam and ACTH testing. She told me my horse was at least 100 pounds underweight. She gave him a body condition score of 4.5 out of 9 (0 is emaciated, 9 is too overweight; a 6 is good, she said). This means MY HORSE LOST AT LEAST 100 POUNDS WITHIN 41 DAYS OF BEING AT SKY RANCH. That is alarming. When I told the person who is in charge of giving grain every day what the vet recommended for helping him to put on weight, he told me he didn't "have time for all that." By this point, there had already been ongoing issues with my horse not getting his daily medication and/or grain for multiple days in a row. Who knows if he got alfalfa daily like he was supposed to. This continued to be an issue until the day before I left, and bringing it to the owner's attention did little to improve it. In fact, it made me feel like they only resented me and my horse more than they already did. I moved my horse back to his old barn 13 days after that vet visit. It was crystal clear in the weeks before I was able to arrange to have him moved that my horse was not going to put on weight, and that these people didn't really care one way or another if he did. It was clear that he may or may not get his daily medication and grain. It was clear that these people had no business being in charge of the welfare and care of my horse. If you have a horse who can be thrown out to pasture, is dominant and will chase other horses off the hay in order to get enough to eat, doesn't need medication or any other special considerations, then Sky Ranch could be just fine for your horse. Or if you can come out every day and make sure your horse is getting what it needs, it might work for you. But if not, I can guarantee you that if your horse requires anything beyond tossing him hay, it's a crap shoot whether or not he'll get it. Beyond the neglect of my horse, the owner will lie about pretty much anything. He blatantly lied to me about several things. He'll tell you he did something, and he didn't. He'll double down on his lie until it becomes clear that he knows you know he's lying, and then he'll tell you that maybe it's time for you to find another place to board your horse. He also goes out of town and out of state without telling boarders. He went out of state a few weeks after I arrived and I had no idea. There was an issue with my horse not getting his medication during that time and I had no idea where he was or who I should get a hold of until I ran into someone on the property who told me. It is with a heavy heart that I submit this review. My family and I have been patrons of Sky Ranch for over three years. When our family began riding lessons and boarding here, the barn was under the ownership and management of Fred Hall. We were very happy with Fred's management--he was good to the horses, good to the boarders, maintained a very safe environment for horses and families, and most importantly, Fred let the horses be horses. When Fred decided to retire, he sold the barn to Jon and Lisa Deleonardo. Change is difficult but my family and I remained optimistic that the high quality care and service we were accustomed to under Fred would continue with Jon and Lisa. Boarders were reassured that Jon and Lisa were experienced barn managers and everything would pretty much stay the same. The initial changes Jon and Lisa made were good--the payment process was improved with the addition of a secure payment box and monthly invoices were mailed out. Within a few months of the change in ownership and management, it became apparent that perhaps Jon and Lisa were not as experienced as we were lead to believe. During the summer of 2016, Jon began to repair the gelding barn stalls. This project was a huge safety hazard as Jon would leave saws, drills, and other various tools scattered around the ground or on work tables. In addition to leaving tools around the barn, I noticed that the amount of hay left out for the horses was small in comparison to previous years. It is my belief that the horses were fed significantly less than 18lbs of hay per day, which is a good average amount of hay for a 1000 lbs horse. I noticed that the horses were beginning to act very aggressively around food, and many of the horses were showing signs of weight loss. My own horse was down about 200lbs at the end of the summer. One of the most upsetting discoveries was the routine whipping of horses. I find this practice to be brutal, unacceptable and unethical. Some of the horses had deep welts from being whipped. It was at that time that my husband and I began to research other barns as we felt our horses were not being cared for as per the promises in Jon and Lisa's boarding contract. I also noticed that repairs were not being completed in a timely manner. The roof leaked and would cause water to pool in the arena;' the downspouts were damaged during a storm and were not repaired; the bathroom was out of service for several months; large piles of reclaimed wood was left in the parking area for several months; and mole traps were incorrectly placed in and around the pastures and barns. What was once a very relaxing, friendly environment became a source of stress, anxiety and uncertainty. Many of the horses were showing signs of discontent--the horses appeared sad, lonely, hungry and afraid. My child--who had once loved the barn--began to despise spending time at Sky Ranch. It was at this time that we decided to move our horses to another barn. Since January of 2017, over 16 horses have left Sky Ranch Stables. Tour the facility, do your research, read reviews, ask for references, talk to ferriers and veterinarians and ask questions. Look at the horses--do they appear happy and healthy? How much hay is given out per day, per horse? What type of hay? Is it quality hay or is it the cheapest, poor quality hay found? Are they stalls clean? Who cleans the stalls and how often? What happens if a horse is injured at Sky Ranch? Are the owners experienced in barn management and do they know anything about horses? read more

Trust and loyalty is important between horse and rider, and I knew I could rely on this barn to help build that relationship with my horse, but I noticed very quickly that the atmosphere had evolved from relaxed to tension with the new owners. After the barns were sold to a younger, "experienced" couple (named Jon and Lisa). The horses were promised hay, yet during the entire summer, Jon may have put bales of hay out a total of six times. Resulting in the horse progressively losing dramatic amounts of weight, pulling out the roots of grass, and eating weeds. When fall arrived, the horses were cold and hungry. The little hay they received were fought over. Now does that sound like happy horses? No, it doesn't. Now if their horse is getting so thin that they had to bring him every day, why didn't they feed all of the horses more? Not only do they underfeed the horses they also started a project in the beginning of the summer, around June, of redoing the stall fronts and plumbing for the automatic feeders. I am not disagreeing that the old wood stall front should not be redone, but it was the end of October when he finally finished, meaning that the horses had been on summer schedule (outside in the pastures 24/7) for the month of October. During the nights where it poured rain and wind howled, they, of course, brought their own horse into the few stalls that had been completed. During the summer we were not allowed to use the arena whether he was working or not because of the dust that arose and affected his tools that lay in the center of the arena. Indeed, the dust was horrible, but the previous owner either left the sprinkler in the arena for a while or paid someone to water it down. They did neither, forcing us to use the outside, used for jumping, which is not convenient when it is dark or when you want to do flatwork. The thing that stood out to me the most was Jon's carelessness for the safety of his boarders and horses. One example was, he left his tools everywhere, in the middle of the arena, in the tack up area, in people's stalls etc... (tools includes: saw blades, sledgehammers, and sharp drills) Another example was that he left TWO of the gates open and the geldings ran out, almost into the street, because they were so scared. Never been to a dune buggy race? No need! Just come here and see him zooming around on his ATV! Doesn't matter if you're riding, walking or standing he will zoom past you like there is no tomorrow. When the snow came, and the horses were cold and in need of water and food, they were not able to drink because all of the buckets were frozen outside, with inches of ice. Neither of the owners made an effort to effectively extract the ice. Jon ran the horses in eight inches of snow, which the ATV lights beaming. In the eyes of a horse, that is a scary monster attacking, therefore they tremble every time the horses hear an engine or see Jon because they think that he will attack them. On many occasions, more to count, he whipped the horses who were already in their stalls. My horses still have welts from their abuse. Then Jon put out mole traps in the mare and gelding pasture, and outside of the mare barn. As we asked him that this sharp piece of metal is dangerous, he said that it is "just like a loose horseshoe". Even when we stated our concerns he did not see the problem and always had an excuse. A few months later, my horse got a terrible injury, severing 60% of her leg tendons. She is on 18 weeks of stall rest and could not be able to be moved much until September. The only possible way that she could have injured her leg in this way is the mole traps that Jon admitted putting out there. Within a short time after her injury, all of the mole traps were gone and out of sight. Please be aware of the neglectful, ignorant, and abusive acts of Jon and Lisa. My experience at Sky Ranch has been nothing short of amazing. I first started off just doing lessons here which went great! I now lease a horse from Jon and Lisa and have nothing but good things to say. The arena is always clean and all the improvements that Jon has done is very impressive. I also love the fact that there are trails, so if you're more into being outside and enjoying nature all while riding, this stable is for you. Sky Ranch Stables is owned by Fred Hall. He has operated his boarding stable for the past 30 years. The setting of the stable is lovely with onsite access to a good network of trails. There are two barns; one for mares; one for geldings. Horses are turned out in large pastures. Fred has devised an efficient and cleaver way of turning the horses in and out. He simply opens the doors to the barn and the horses put themselves into their own stalls; quite an elegant thing to watch. Horses are fed alfalfa hay and a lower grade of "chewing" hay. In spring and summer they have access to fresh pasture grass. Fred does not provide grain for horses. Owners are provided with space to store their own grain and must feed it themselves; Fred will not do it for them. The pastures are fenced with barb wire. Both my geldings went through the barb wire when they first arrived. One was seriously cut up requiring a vet call and a regimen of antibiotics. The barn is 40 years old. Nothing fancy, but it is functional with good storage for tack. The roof leaks in several places. Stalls have dirt floors. The arena is 50 x 180 feet, but 40 feet is used for hay storage. No lighting over the stalls but the arena has adequate lighting for riding. Stalls open to the arena so arena riding can be a challenge as horses, wheel barrows, and people can walk in front of you at any time and frequently do. I moved into Sky Ranch Stables with my four 4 horses in May 2012. I was attracted to the stables because they are close to home, there are miles of riding trails and board is only $250/horse per month (not including stall cleanings or grain). My only hesitations concerned the fact that Fred did not grain horses, and that they were left outside day and night from May - October. (Horses are put in stalls only during the rainy months of November - April) As it turns out, the large pastures and 24/7 turnout proved good for my horses. They were happy in the more natural herd environment and their temperaments became calmer. Now for the not-so-good part. Fred has a reputation for being difficult. The reputation is well deserved and recognized by every boarder I spoke to. For me, the relationship was challenging. Fred has no written barn rules and is unwilling to put any rules in writing. The sole exception is a faded sign in the tack-up area that reads "Keep doors and gates shut". Instead of providing written rules, Fred prefers to observe his boarders activities and give verbal and often confrontational corrections when he sees something he doesn't like. For example, he did not inform us that only he could feed hay to the horses, so when I fed hay to my horses as a treat after a long trail ride he accused me of stealing his hay. This was just days after I wrote him a $1,000 check to pay for hay. A few confrontations in any stable are going to happen from time-to-time; however Fred's barn became a constant state of apprehension for my family. We were afraid to speak with him when we needed something or had a question and for the most part did our best to avoid him. Still, as the November rains hit, I decided to request a meeting with Fred to make 3 simple requests which included: fixing a rain leak in the roof that was soaking my expensive tack, arranging for stall cleanings 3 days per week, and installing lighting over our horribly dark stalls. I offered to pay for the stall cleanings and the cost of installing lighting. Fred said no to all of these requests so independently I solved my needs as follows: I found someone else to clean my stalls, I purchased headlamps to wear while tacking my horses, and I put covers over my tack to protect it from dripping rain water. I then moved on and considered the issues resolved. Unfortunately Fred resented my requests, especially to install improved lighting. 4 weeks after our meeting, he decided to interrupt my family as we were about to enjoy a quiet evening of riding for the apparent sole purpose of having a confrontation. He ranted about a number of issues including the fact that I had turned on the lights in the arena. He seemed to think I should ride my horses in the dark, but I stood my ground and said that I needed the lights on. He raged out of the barn then returned to tell me I had 30 days to get out. Happily, it took me only 5 days to find a new barn with lovely sane owners. I left behind 3 weeks of paid board with Fred just to get away from him as soon as possible. Fred took a special disliking to me and felt it necessary to take out his aggression on my kids and I on a regular basis. While there are boarders at the barn who seem to be able to tolerate him, the sizable number of empty stalls and the steady turnover of his boarders probably speaks for itself. I myself have moved on to a new stable with sane owners who deliver a much higher level of service and allow my family and I the peaceful enjoyment of our horses. read more

I started looking for a place to board my horse before I bought one in the fall of 2017. When I found sky ranch I fell in love with the atmosphere! Jon and Lisa the owners have been nothing but kind and welcoming to myself, my husband, my guests and especially my new horse Trebek. They are experienced and attentive. When my horse started limping... I was notified imediately...when I discovered the abscess... Jon helped me doctor him up and keep me regularly updated. They're working diligently on improvements, the trails are amazing, and the other boarders all appear content. I couldn't be happier to board my horse in such a caring environment. read more

I have boarded my horse at Sky Ranch Stables for 4 years now and have nothing but good to say about the previous owner Fred Hall and the current owners Jon and Lisa. I have always felt like a valued boarder and that my horse is loved and cared for. Jon and Lisa are making great improvements to the property and buildings including replacing very old barb wired fencing with very safe rubber fencing. Whenever there is change in ownership there are going to be changes and it is understood. The only change I have experienced is the 25 per month fee to store my trailer in the property. Very fair! The trails are amazing, my horse is happy in a herd and outside all day as she should be. When we first moved up to sky ranch, Fred Hall owned the barn, I loved it up there. Over the summer the horses were turned out all day and night and were a herd, then during the winter they would be turned out during the day and brought in at night. Once Jon and Lisa took over the barn it all started to go down hill. Over the summer the horses were not getting feed enough and quite feeding for a month at a time through the month of October and refused to bring the horses in at night per borders request. when Jon was working on the new stall fronts he would leave his tools everywhere so we could not use the arena, I once found a hammer in my stall. Jon would have a lot of "man tantrums" once when we were riding in the arena we were riding bareback and he raced in on the quad. He was very mad and started throwing wood into his trailer as hard as he could making a lot of noise. Our horses became very nervous, I thought my little sister was going to fall and get hurt. Over the winter when there was 8-12 inches of snow and Ice on the ground, and it was time to bring the horses in for the night. Jon chased the horses around the field, in the dark. The horses were scared of the quad and running away from it as Jon was screaming "NO".In the same snow storm when they were left in, they were not given water when the pipes were froze, Jon did not make sure the horses had access to water outside either, there was 2-3 inches of ice on all the water barrels. I know this because my brother and I went to look at something and took a look at the the water, we had to break it. One night When I got up there I gave my horse water and his grain, he drank all the water as soon as he got it then he started to eat his grain while I cleaned his stall, he started to act really, really weird and I know my horse. My horse then collapsed he ended up being very dehydration. Then when another horse collapsed the same night and my mom and my friend went to get him up, and when they went back to what they were doing he collapsed again. When this happened we started to get worried. We started to take care of this horse (if this happened to my horse and I was not there I would like someone to help him) When Jon got to the barn the first question was not "Are they okay?" his first question was "why are you handling another boarders horse?" I know that you shouldn't do this under normal circumstances but this was different. After all of that, we later found out that the horse's owner was never notified. Finally, when we gave our notice that we were leaving we were only going to pay for one horse because we had payed first and last when we moved in Jon came in having a huge man tantrum, He came in and slammed the door so hard it scared me, I jumped for about two months every time I heard a noise that sounded anything like a door closing. He started yelling at my mom about her not paying for two horses and if she did not pay she better move her horses out immediately. He did not care that we had payed first and last when we moved in and that was a agreement with the previous owner and did not have anything to do with him.So if you want to board at a barn where the owner cares more about money in his pocket then the safety and well being of your horse and like the idea of your horse getting chased by a quad in the snow and ice as well as a barn owner that throws tantrums and feeds moldy hay, I think that this is the barn for you. read more

I've boarded my horse at other barns in the area and I've toured tons and Sky Ranch is by far the best situation I've seen for a horse. This is one of those barns where I gave my 30 days notice and paid in full for the last month of board, per the contract, I then moved my horse just a few days into the month and paid board at another barn. Paying a month of board to both barns was worth it to ensure my horse's safety and wellbeing... This is actually the only barn where I've found this to be necessary. read more

I boarded my horses at sky Ranch for almost 4 years and was very happy and confident with the care and safety of my horses when Fred owned the Ranch. When the new owners Jon and Lisa took over the ranch from Fred that all changed. Yes Jon and Lisa are making some improvements to the barn such as installing new stall fronts and new water lines to the automatic water in the stalls. Having access to all the trails is nice but the health and safety to the horses is my priority and it should be theirs too. In the last year that my horses were at the ranch I lost all confidence in the care my horses were receiving. I witnessed a lot of aggression in the gelding pasture over the very small hay piles when Jon decided to put any hay out. The horses were practically starved through the month of October. I would walk the pasture and not find any hay for 2 weeks strait. I would have to come up daily and feed my horses almost 10 pounds of supplement grains and beet pulp.When I talked to Jon about my concerns he came up with some lame story, I feed them once a week, their teeth need to be done and they are old horses. When I would bring my horses into the barn to feed them their grain, Jon and Lisa's horses would be in their stalls eating alfalfa. They never fed any of the boarders horses alfalfa during this time. Most of the horses lost a significant amount of weight (200-300 lbs.). Jon also likes to chase the horses with his quad. I watched him chase the gelding herd in the dark with eight inches of snow on the ground this past December, I was so disappointed, this was after he left two gates open that the horses went threw. The lack of horse sense and knowledge is unbelievable. These past few months of bad weather they did not bother to make sure the water troughs outside were free from ice. My kids broke the ice a couple of times and said there was a couple of inches they had to break. The first of January one of my horses and another horse actually showed sign's of dehydration we were there thank goodness when he needed us but the other owner was not and was NEVER notified. I should also mention Jon's man tantrums, he made it so uncomfortable for us to even want to be there. I have witnessed him race his quad with a trailer through the arena and throw wood in the trailer with so much noise I am surprised no one on their horse got hurt. He has anger issues. He has slammed the door so hard when he was mad I thought he broke it off the building. When I mentioned this behavior he said " It's My Barn" Jon and Lisa do not even follow their own boarding contract. They only gave me a week notice that my board was going up on the first of the month. I was suppose to have a month notice. For anyone who happens to decide to board at this horse facility PLEASE know your horses behaviors and how they interact with people in general. I know my horses like my own kids and I could tell that there was something wrong. In their own way through new behaviors and aggression they let me know they were not happy at Sky Ranch. The only way I would ever come back to Sky Ranch is if Fred Hall or his family ever took it back. read more

Where else can you get 150+ acres of trail riding right out side your stable door. This stable is newly owned by caring managers Jon & Lisa. They even have summer BBQ's for boarders. Every month there are new improvements to the stalls, lighting, area and grounds. They use good quality feed and keep a watchful eye on all the horses even when they are out in the pastures. Geldings and mares have their own barns. Super nice for us mare owners. read more

What a phenomenal experience! I surprised my gf by purchasing this through AirBnB experiences and didn't know exactly what to expect, but Jon sure delivered. When first arriving at the ranch, Jon was riding up the street (already on a horse), which isn't typical, but was no less magical. Once my gf realized what had been planned, she started jumping up and down and Jon did such an amazing job with the follow-through. From meeting the horses, learning about Jon's life on the ranch, to actually riding Arnold (a beautiful horse--albeit a little sleepy at times, haha) we had an amazing time. $100 for this was a BARGAIN. To be completely honest, I wasn't even the biggest fan of horses before coming, but that has all changed. What's truly special about this experience is hearing about Jon's story and how he and his wife came to be ranchers. Without giving too much more away, I'll just say that this is a fantastic way to get away from the city (although not too far) and to connect with these beautiful animals while getting to know an owner and a family that know what it means to share their passion and love for what they do. read more
