I chose this hotel based on the price, the location, and the availability (room-wise). We were a couple on our first trip to NZ. We planned our stay from March 26th to April 9th (14 nights). The "Premium" King Room was available without an increase to our original package. We also looked at the restaurants, shopping, things to see and do, transportation, and walkability within the hotel and its surrounding area. Our flight arrived early in the morning (5 am), so our room wasn't available when we got to the hotel, but they checked us in, offered to store our luggage, and took our cell number just in case it was ready earlier than scheduled. We knew there were restaurants in the hotel, so we walked around to get some breakfast. We also stopped by a couple of gift shops on the way to and from breakfast. After a while, we went back to the hotel lobby, and we were informed that our room was ready (early) and that they already had a porter deliver our luggage inside our room. The lobby, elevator, halls, and rooms were all clean. In fact, we constantly saw workers cleaning during our entire stay. They were always checking in on us as we passed by, asking if we needed anything. We asked for toilet paper and new towels twice, and had them change the bedding and vacuum once during our stay. We were in Rotorua for five days, but still had this room in our name as a home base because we were coming back. The room was large, again, with a king-sized bed, a small "L" shaped couch, a nightstand on one side of the bed, a desk, a credenza under the TV, a fixed luggage rack, a coffee/tea station, several drawers, shelves, and a closet. The bathroom had plenty of room to move, ample counter space, and a shower that could fit two. We couldn't ask for anything more. Well, maybe one. A microwave. But we understand. They have several restaurants attached to this hotel. They would rather have you spend the money eating out than in the room. There's a gambling casino in the hotel, too. It includes both machines and tables. We have casinos all over the place where we live, so it wasn't a selling point for us, but it was a nice pastime and something to do when we wanted to vape/smoke and didn't want to stand outside the hotel. There are several smoking balconies with machines to keep you occupied. You do have to sign up for membership here, but you can do that on their website before you even arrive. They regulate gambling and have guidelines in place to (hopefully) avoid gambling addictions. Anyhow, we had two concierges that brighten every day that we saw them, Dicky, and TaoBao (sorry if that's misspelled). We met Dicky first. He talked to us like family, giving us tips on what to do, where to go, where to eat, and what not to. He always had a huge smile on his face, greeted us with hugs, and got genuinely excited to see us. We felt the same. TaoBao was also very friendly towards us, gave us great tips, and booked a private tour for us with an unexpected discount. We were down the hall from the elevator, so the noise level was very minimal. We would occasionally hear a door or soft chatter, but other than that, the only other noise was from housekeeping, and they weren't noisy at all. Overall, we were pleased with our stay and everything (except a microwave) that they had to offer. Oh! I almost forgot, to our surprise, this hotel is also the bus hub. If you take the bus from the airport to the City Center, this is where you will be dropped off. As well as if you want to go back to the airport. There are lockers (some large) available at the Bus Office here, too. If you're just visiting on a day trip, these are so handy! They also have the InterCity Bus (website is helpful), where you can go to other, long-distance areas of NZ. We took the bus to Rotorua. It took about five hours with a rest stop mid-point. In front of the hotel by the Tower, there's a Hop-on, Hop-off Bus that will take you to several tourist stops. This was really nice to have. There's an auto-tour guide that tells you about the area along the way and announces what stop is coming up and what there is to do there. *Pro-tip 1: Get the two-day pass. Take a photo of your receipt. If you want to purchase it again over the next week, they will give you a discount. *Pro-tip 2: If you go to the Hop-on, Hop-off Bus website, you can get the map and stop locations marked directly onto Google Maps. It was very helpful when it came to finding where to get back on the bus! read more

We flew in to Auckland from San Francisco and landed at 6 am. Our room wasn't ready, obviously, but the staff took our luggage for safe keeping while we explored the city. They had our room ready early which we greatly appreciated after our long flight! We loved how centrally located the hotel was and our room was very clean and comfortable! Stayed here for 3 nights - lovely room but the place is so confusing - some lifts you can use some you can't - then to get to go to breakfast down to the foyer and up 2 escalators to get to the breakfast area. Very noisy hotel , didn't realize it was a casino hotel so reminded me of a Las Vegas hotel. I went to the bar on the second floor and there was no seating at the bar so went down a corridor to the other side within minutes had two members of staff telling me I had to leave immediately - sign at front door said sit where you like and the corridor didn't say no entry and later I found out I was on the casino side - I was treat like I was a villain rather that with any respect- bar lady finally told me it happens a lot. I would not return - if you like a busy vibrant , noisy place maybe this is the place for you read more

Atrium: The entrance into this hotel is via a grand entrance, atrium. The atrium gives you access to two sets of elevators, to the casinos or hotel rooms. There's also the escalators down towards the sky tower entrance or to the casino & restaurants. The other side is the reception & concierge area. Check-in was quick and painless. They have an area for luggage storage too, very helpful. Rooms: the room was clean, spacious & modern. Amenities included: desk, sofa, fridge, safe, iron & ironing board. Our thermostat wasn't really working but the room was cool enough, 422. The bathroom design isn't too smart. While in the shower, there's only glass half the way, leaving plenty of room for the floor to get wet. Breakfast: The weekend breakfast was held in Fortuna, buffet style. It offered the usual assortment: fake scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, pancakes/waffles, baked beans, roasted tomatos, undercooked bacon, hash browns, fruit, cereal & super strong coffee. During the week, breakfast is held at Andy's Burger Bar, delicious as well. Sky tower: After taking the escalator down, in the atrium, you can buy tickets in the souvenir shop. The price is $39 AD, this gives you access to the main observation deck (51st floor/622ft), Cafe & Sky Deck (60th floor, 722ft). We stayed here for days during our time in Auckland. Knowing that our flight would bring us in well before check in, we planned to stow our bags with the concierge and walk around a bit for some sight seeing and shopping since the hotel is in such a great location. Unfortunately, we were unaware that we happened to arrive on the Queen's Birthday and so most everything in the area was closed :( You can get free wifi in the lobby so we decided to hang out and wait a bit for our room to be ready. As you can imagine, being jet lagged and stuck sitting in the lobby just made us more exhausted but more than an hour before check in, the young lady behind the desk was able to get us an upgraded room so we could go up and rest! I actually would have preferred the basic room due to sleeping arrangements, but it was very kind. Thank you Sunaina! The room was lovely and the bed comfy, which was good because there was not much to do that day. We showered/bathed and rested. I loved the deep tub that was excellent for a tall person and my only complaint about the room was that there was a bit of a yucky smell from the toilet area; even after cleanings, it never went away and you can image how unpleasant that can be. Another thing I did not like was that I did not realize until I arrived that the SkyCity Hotel and the SkyCity Grand Hotel are two different things. They look in exactly the same place on a map when I was researching hotels. Do not make the same mistake as me if you like to swim as we only found out after we checked in that this hotel has NO POOL, so if that is an important amenity to you, you may want to book your stay across the street at the "Grand". To be fair, we did not have much interaction with staff other than the first day and we didn't eat at the hotel because there were just too many amazing places to explore nearby. Although we didn't spend much time in the room, we did enjoy it. I appreciated the desk to write at and my son appreciated the movie channel. We both loved the robes provided too. I came to the Sky City hotel for a wedding and then stayed there for a weekend a year later. The wedding we went to was one of the best weddings I've ever been to purely because the venue is so awesome. It was out on the rooftop of the Skycity complex and had the most amazing views out over the harbour. When it got darker we could see that one whole side of the rooftop was covered in fairy lights, a beautiful touch to the evening. The food was so delicious. It was a buffet but not as you know it. They did what I can only describe as a gourmet barbeque. Even better was knowing that at the end of the night we didn't have to stick around to clean anything up because the staff did it all. Like I said, it was a dream wedding venue and I'm gutted they got to it first! read more

I was in a trip solo to Auckland and I thought for the price and location this was a great hotel. I was so excited when I checked in to see how centrally located it was. I could be anywhere in the city and as long as I could see the tower I could get back! Great for someone traveling alone. Check was smooth and all the staff was helpful, polite, and attentive. Once I arrived to my floor I had this amazing view and the floor lobby was decked out in modern furniture so you could sit out and relax. My room was beautiful with a big glass shower. I got in late and went down to the casino for food. It was ok but I was sick and desperate for anything. I'm not a gambler but was amazed to see the amount of tourist gambling at midnight. The following day, I went up to the sky tower and took photos and went by the bar. I really enjoyed my stay. I only wish the food was better! read more

LOVELY HOTEL This is quite a nice place with large well-furnished rooms. It's in a good location right next to the Auckland Sky Tower. Note that the Bell Captain & his team can easily become overwhelmed when presented with multiple check-ins & provide very poor service under those conditions, so it may be best to just take your own bags to your room. read more

This is a nice, central hotel. The rooms are clean and spacious, with nice views of the downtown area. The staff members are friendly. There are plenty of restaurants inside the hotel and within easy walking distance. Things are quietish on most weekdays, but the hotel, casino, and restaurants are all bustling on the weekends. read more

One of the best places to stay in Auckland. Only got 4 stars as it is on the expensive side and parking is a rip off. Rooms are awesome. Got upgraded to a suite last time. Location is perfect and the area is loaded with bars and restaurants including the Mexican opposite. Gym, sorry Cardio room, is a bit stink but it has a rowing machine. You can use the gym in the Grand opposite but it depends what you are into. read more

You don't even have to leave the hotel to get something to eat or drink; there is a top notch restaurant on site by top chef Peter Gordon.
