Our bunny friend who visited the outdoor area frequently
    Elizabeth M.

After enduring a rough couple days with the endless fireworks around the Fourth of July the last couple years, we decided to go "off the grid" this year with a trip to Shenandoah. We booked the bed and breakfast, pet-friendly package months in advance, since we weren't sure what our plans would be once the summer arrived. CHECK-IN We started at Skyland with a trip to the office to check in. Billy handled the process and he was great, especially since it was our first visit and we didn't know what to expect. Although we had selected the bed and breakfast package when we booked, Billy explained we would receive vouchers for an entree and beverage to redeem each morning at the dining room. He provided several maps and walked me through where we should drive to get to our room. He also noted we could call the office at any time if we had questions or concerns. THE ROOM Our room was in the New Market section of lodging, as that's where the premium, pet-friendly rooms are. (So many of our neighbors had the cutest dogs!) The room was very cute and had plenty of items to make our stay cozy, including a Keurig and TV. The bathroom was stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, and soap. The beds have lots of pillows, but they are quite hard. If you are used to soft pillows, you may want to pack one of your own. The bedding was generally nice. There's no fridge or microwave, so we brought a small cooler with us. The outdoor seating area is fantastic. As many other reviewers have noted, the trees almost completely obscure the view of the valley in many places, but the trees themselves are beautiful. When we arrived, we checked for bedbugs and other critters, but other than a lone mosquito and a couple spiders, we didn't see anything. That being said, if you are like me and tend to attract bugs like you are some delicious Thanksgiving dinner, they will find you. I woke up to find the area on my feet around ankle-level swollen with bites. (Based on the reaction and location, I'm pretty sure fleas were the culprit, which made me glad we didn't bring our cats.) Even a few days later, I have to apply anti-itch ointment, but this is normal for me and I went into the trip expecting to be bitten. Don't expect to get WiFi, although I noticed it worked during off-peak hours, both very late at night and very early in the morning. I was also able to download the NPS app at Skyland. THE LOCATION/PARK We walked around the lodging area several times while exploring and found several ice makers, a small playground, and lots of beautiful views. It was nice and quiet, despite all the rooms being at capacity. We ate at the Skyland restaurant several times, including with our breakfast vouchers. It's generally not gourmet-level food, but it worked for the trip. (I'll post a separate review for the restaurant.) There are so many activities to enjoy, especially hiking. I recommend looking at the schedule and downloading the NPS app for more information. We had a great time on a solo trek and a guided tour. Expect to see lots of wildlife, especially deer. We even got to see some little fawns on our hikes! Overall, we had a great trip and got to enjoy the quiet of nature. The room is very good for what it is, but if you are one of the unlucky people who attracts bugs like me, definitely bring and use bug spray on yourself--even when you are in the room.

Decided to stay during Labor Day weekend here and I wish I would've went home instead . Paid over 300 for a "premium king room" and I would've been better off at a Motel 6. Room was dirty , dusty . TV didn't work & worst of all there were MICE !!!

My family and I stayed overnight at one of the two-bed rooms in Skyland. We had a wonderful stay! The room and bathroom were clean and the view was great. It was a short 2 minute drive to the dining room/gift shop and just a 10 minute walk (which we opted for). The dining hall had great dinner, dessert, and breakfast- we only had a short wait at peak hours for dinner. The dining staff and lodging staff were all friendly and helpful. The gift shop was so cute and had a ton of fun souvenirs. We easily found QR codes for maps to the hiking trails, and did about 11 miles over 2 days!

More stains on the mattress cover.

During our first (and only night) in Appledore lodge in early October at Skyland, my wife was bitten from head to toes by bugs in the bed. We found bugs and carcasses of some type on sheets and on the towels in the dresser, all of which ended up on the carpet when hotel staff examined the room the morning we complained. Skyland hired Orkin to inspect our room and said there was no evidence of bedbugs. However, it took a week to get the results from Skyland, so as a precautionary measure we had to clean all of our belongings when we got home as if we had come into contact with bedbugs. This was a time-consuming process, taking several days while we brought items into the house for multiple washings and dryer cycles. We also had to cancel a stay elsewhere later that week because of concern we'd bring bedbugs to that location. When mattresses were flipped for inspection in our room at Appledore, we found disgusting stains on the mattress protector. Rather than replace the cover, the cleaning staff obviously had flipped the most disgusting side to the bottom. Luck of the draw, I suppose, but I wouldn't trust other rooms. Management apologized for the state of the room and refunded our booking as well as the pre-paid booking later in the week. Additionally, the dining room menu is set at top-quality restaurant prices, but the food is very subpar and the understaffed crew cannot provide good service. I was told I would be refunded for the meals, but we received nothing. Stay down the mountain. The concessionaire, Delaware North, is damaging the National Park Service's reputation.

$30 steak served on a paper plate. The toughest steak we've eaten in a long time

We booked for 2 nights and stayed for only one. The Bar tender was very rude which made for an unpleasant dining experience. My husband ordered a $30 steak and it was served on a paper plate with plastic utensils. The bartender said the dishwasher was being fixed because they found "bacteria" in it. Bacteria in the kitchen! And we paid for bottled beer but they gave us canned beer. Nowhere on the menu are there canned beers. It's a crowded tourist trap and they're ripping everyone off. And the website is misleading saying the premium rooms have a view. Good thing the trees were dead because if we had gone in summer, the view would have been blocked. We weren't giving them anymore of our money and checked out the day after we arrived. Better off renting a VRBO!

We really enjoyed our stay here. We stayed in a preferred room with a balcony, right on the edge of the mountain with spectacular views. The room was a good size and it was modest but clean. Contrary to the website, our room had great cell phone service. There was a little playground nearby and the dining room, office and cafe were within walking distance also. They have an EV charger there too which is great.

    Bugs on bed

The rooms at Skyland were deplorable. The days we had planned were ruined after going to their rooms. The room was dirty, loaded with bugs, no view, hot. I asked for another room had to move all my stuff to the second room and the next room had mice, dirty, and the front door lock was broken. If you don't mind a dirty, loaded with bugs and mice that you can hear in the wall then you won't have a problem in this room. The last time the room was updated looks to be in 1970. We cut are vacation there down to one night and it was a huge disaster.

We stayed at Skyland resort for two nights. First night we got there, we had trouble finding our room because it was dark and the lights in front of our room was out so couldn't see the room number. It was difficult to get the key in and open the door but with some force we were able to (and yes they use actual keys and not cards like hotel rooms). Once we got in the room, we looked around and it was little dated but looked ok initially. But when I looked in the bathroom, there was a spider size of a quarter waiting for us. My husband took care of it and we settled into bed. Next morning AND at night, I went into the bathroom and found a cricket waiting for me. Now as for the dining hall, we went there around 8:30am. Waited about 5-10 minutes before being seated. The dining chairs were wobbly and I thought it would break. We ordered raspberry French toast, traditional breakfast and kids pancake breakfast. All food were just ok. Service was decent, not great. Skyland is great location for exploring Shenandoah but the resort can use some TLC like renovating the rooms a bit and updating their food menu.

Unfortunately, because of our choice of year, we ran into a few problems, all of which were addressed promptly and satisfactorily by the owners of Brookside. And, because of that, we are in position to review several of the cabins! We booked Cabin 9 and battled through crazy DC drivers who freak out over a literal two inches of snow (aside: seriously DC-area, get it together!) Diane in the gift stop called us that morning to warn us of the impending snow and to let us know that if we ended up arriving late, they would leave the key for us under the doormat. Amazing foresight and we really appreciated her call. When we walked into our cabin, the bathroom sink was overflowing and not draining. Turns out the cold winds had frozen the drainage pipes and Cabin 9, being at the end, got the brunt of it. Cece and Bob, the owners, came down immediately and gave us our choice of cabins. We chose number 2, which is a cozy space with a hot tub, angled bed and intimate fireplace area. The second morning, when we were moved back into 9, the water went out over the entire resort just after our morning shower, but by the time we returned to the cabin in the evening, it was fixed. Overall, I liked Cabin 9 best, with its open layout, its great view from the Jacuzzi tub and its numerous skylights. Cabin 2 was cozy and romantic and I liked the layout of the sofa area around the fireplace and the hot tub was pleasant. Both are ideal for a couple, though Cabin 9 has a pull-out sofa and is large enough to not feel too crowded with kids. We also had a peek into Cabins 7 & 8. Number 8 has a full kitchen and two bedrooms and would be great for a family or even the main house for a family reunion. Cece said it is popular for Thanksgiving gatherings. Cabin 7 is a jacuzzi cabin that was intended to be a two-bedroom but instead has a "tub room." If you like privacy for your Jacuzzi it makes sense, however we did not like that each room was separate. The greatest part about the winter? Beautiful snow-covered trees and a partially frozen brook that still babbles underneath it AND the amazing Christmas decorations in each cabin. The usual decor is a bit old-fashioned and flowery, but the Christmas decorations are really fabulous and fun. The restaurant was closed from Thanksgiving until the second week of January. Also, the cabins are really close to 211, which could get noisy in the summer, maybe? But we did not hear much traffic from our cabin, which was next to the roadway. Plus, you can't get any closer to the Thornton Gap entrance to Shenandoah National Park. We hope to return this spring!

Our room was not like the photos (definitely not fully remodeled) or luxurious. The bathroom had new fixtures and vanity but the tub was still old and kind of grimy. The window screen in the bathroom was ancient and hard to open and there were some sort of seeds or insect eggs all over the windowsill there. There were also dead flies in the front window, which could have used a wipe down. We had a 2 queen room and one bad was extremely hard and one was very soft. There were only 3 pillows on each bed so someone only had 1 pillow - not ideal with kids. Two of the towels in the bathroom were nice and 2 were pretty raggedy and thin. The size of the room was fine (only room for 1 small table, no chairs) but there was no additional deadbolt or slide latch on the door and that didn't feel safe, especially after someone tried to put a code into our door at about 11:00 one night. This motel is somewhat cute, cozy and quiet but still seems a bit run down. However, after driving around Luray, I'd venture to say it's the nicest of the roadside motels we saw. It has beautiful views of the Shenandoah's and it's very convenient to town and the park. It wasn't awful but wasn't what we expected. The manager Judy was very nice when she called to confirm our reservation and when I let her know the room smelled smoky. Be aware that not all rooms look like the photo on the website.

We had to leave because we had plans so we weren't able to check out the room before hand but as soon as we got back there we started checking it out, so first of all, hair was all over the bedding and on the towels in the bathroom so that was pretty gross. The bath tub was so outdated and yellow, and it had ants in it and of course when we tried to wash the ants away or get rid of them so we could shower about 50 more came crawling out of the faucet so we couldn't even shower. Just overall based on the pictures and the reviews for this place it was not like we were expecting and were very disappointed with it, I would look into other places before coming here especially for $140, save your money and go somewhere else where at least you know what your getting into.
