The first year they did my return, they made a mistake and told…read moreme it was my responsibility to make sure the tax return is accurate when I got a notice from the IRS which has never happened to me in my adult life. Chandler did amend the return at no charge but advised me it was my responsibility to make sure the entire return is correct. I'm not a CPA which is why I paid them for their expertise. I chalked it up to a one time mistake, but the next year I went over the return page by page, line by line, and found multiple mistakes (since it's my responsibility according to them so I spent hour and hours reviewing every line item). Chandler had to modify the return at least 3 times and make many corrections before it could be submitted to the IRS. These were mistakes I found (not them). What is the point of hiring and paying a CPA to file my tax return if I need to learn all the tax laws to find their mistakes. I had to proofread all their work but their fee was never discounted for the countless hours I had to spent proofing the return and bringing errors to their attention. I even had to bring to their attention a typo transposing numbers, a mathematical error, as well as a major error whereas they reflected tax free funds as taxable funds. Needless to say I decided to find a new CPA going forward as I had no confidence in their ability to prepare my return accurately. Fortunately, I found a highly competent CPA that I am working with now and have been for several years. My new CPA even went back and found more mistakes (that I didn't know about as I'm not a CPA). I had to pay my new CPA to amend mistakes from their original work. I didn't even ask Chandler to amend the old return to fix their mistakes as did not want to have any further relationship with them as trust was gone and I moved on to another CPA who I paid to amend the return previously filed by Chandler. The people at Chandler are very nice people, but I just do not have confidence of the accuracy of my returns they prepared so I found a new CPA. I shouldn't have to have CPA knowledge to hire a CPA to complete my return. I provide my CPA with proper documentation and while I still review the return before it is submitted, I expect my CPA to prepare an accurate return. I do hope that things have changed for them as this was several years ago and hope they are doing a more thorough review of their work. I wish them the best of luck. I didn't even want to write this review as they were nice people but a friend of mine said it would be wrong not to write the review. In the end, I do hope these were just training issues that have since been resolved so this does not happen to anyone else.

At this point, there seems to be little chance of resolving all of the problems this mistake has caused. Our goal was to find an accounting firm in Dallas that understood our growth mindset and was entrepreneur-friendly. We wanted help with tax preparation and to make sure we were bookkeeping with best practices. It took months and countless unanswered emails to get anywhere with Kelly CPA accountants after the first in person meeting. Our intake form and answers provided were even lost by their office at one point. After calling and being blatantly ignored multiple times by the accountant their first assigned us, they finally assigned a new accountant a few weeks before the deadline to file. I asked multiple times over email and calls to meet in person to review our information since the firm lost our data. He ignored my requests for the in person meeting just like the previous accountant who was assigned. I have major issues with the way they bill. Part of it is my fault - make sure if you use them to get their fees agreed to in writing. They claim they discussed this in person at our first meeting, but we don't have this written down nor do we remember for sure if it was agreed to many months ago. They don't include pricing in the engagement letter, which makes no sense to me. A simple google search shows this business charges 2-3x the average market price for tax returns - definitely worth knowing before signing an engagement letter. Finally, after requesting a sit-down with their bookkeepers to review best practices and being ignored on that, it was clear they weren't a firm that truly cares about supporting small businesses.
