When reached out to J Chester & Associates I explained to the firm manager, David Perez, exactly what I was looking for in an accountant. He was happy to take my money, have me fill out a form, then pass me along to others within the firm. I repeatedly requested a phone call with an accountant and was ignored completely. Next thing I know my taxes were filed, without ever speaking to me directly about any deductions I may be entitled to, my small business or any other personal information that may be pertinent. The first year they did my return, they made a mistake and told…read moreme it was my responsibility to make sure the tax return is accurate when I got a notice from the IRS which has never happened to me in my adult life. Chandler did amend the return at no charge but advised me it was my responsibility to make sure the entire return is correct. I'm not a CPA which is why I paid them for their expertise. I chalked it up to a one time mistake, but the next year I went over the return page by page, line by line, and found multiple mistakes (since it's my responsibility according to them so I spent hour and hours reviewing every line item). Chandler had to modify the return at least 3 times and make many corrections before it could be submitted to the IRS. These were mistakes I found (not them). What is the point of hiring and paying a CPA to file my tax return if I need to learn all the tax laws to find their mistakes. I had to proofread all their work but their fee was never discounted for the countless hours I had to spent proofing the return and bringing errors to their attention. I even had to bring to their attention a typo transposing numbers, a mathematical error, as well as a major error whereas they reflected tax free funds as taxable funds. Needless to say I decided to find a new CPA going forward as I had no confidence in their ability to prepare my return accurately. Fortunately, I found a highly competent CPA that I am working with now and have been for several years. My new CPA even went back and found more mistakes (that I didn't know about as I'm not a CPA). I had to pay my new CPA to amend mistakes from their original work. I didn't even ask Chandler to amend the old return to fix their mistakes as did not want to have any further relationship with them as trust was gone and I moved on to another CPA who I paid to amend the return previously filed by Chandler. The people at Chandler are very nice people, but I just do not have confidence of the accuracy of my returns they prepared so I found a new CPA. I shouldn't have to have CPA knowledge to hire a CPA to complete my return. I provide my CPA with proper documentation and while I still review the return before it is submitted, I expect my CPA to prepare an accurate return. I do hope that things have changed for them as this was several years ago and hope they are doing a more thorough review of their work. I wish them the best of luck. I didn't even want to write this review as they were nice people but a friend of mine said it would be wrong not to write the review. In the end, I do hope these were just training issues that have since been resolved so this does not happen to anyone else.

Sean Duncan did nothing to help me. He did not review the audit paperwork for me or go to bat with the IRS. In fact, he quoted me over $1000 to complete the audit documentation the IRS required! I consulted with 2 other CPA's and 1 financial adviser and all of them said the same thing... SMD reported the mileage in the wrong way and should have known better. SMD should have completed the audit documentation without charging me anything. They made a dumb mistake that cost me dearly then left me to fend for myself. SMD makes Turbo Tax look good!

He was not very knowledgeable about a lot of the current laws and tax write off as he should have been. The office was extremely hard to get any questions answered when I called updates.
