MMM, a cup of dough and a side of Joe. I just discovered the Slavic Rolls food truck at my local farmers' market (Royal City Farmers' Market, yo), which deals in hot Turkish coffee and the namesake dessert, Slavic rolls. For $5 you get a cylinder of dough that has been basted with sugar and cinnamon and rotisseried to a golden colour, which is partly the result of the sugar caramelizing away on the surface. Then they'll fill your roll with two fillings of your choice - on this day, the flavours included Bavarian cream, apple pie, lemon, blueberry and Nutella. The owner, an incredibly friendly and charming gentleman, sold me on the Bavarian cream for one of the toppings with a quick sampling, and I paired that with apple, because it's fall! They served the wonderful warm and gooey concoction in a small plastic bag. It was the perfect treat for walking and eating, as I was bound to make a bit of a mess of myself, but at least being upright keeps the crumby sweater thing I always end up with at a minimum. The dessert feels very decadent, but supposedly the baked, not fried, dough makes it somewhat healthy. I am not sure about that claim; I have a few Eastern European friends, and neither the food nor the culture I've gleaned from them has ever suggested "healthy" or "restraint" as guiding principles. But you have to love their joy of indulgence (and partying), which I sense in the spirit of the roaming Slavic Rolls truck, too. Well, I've seen this at Richmond Night market, but didn't get a chance to try. Stumbling upon a food truck gathering by Playland, I was able to try out Slavic Rolls. I went with the 3 flavors of Nutella, Vanilla and Strawberry. $7 for a roll wasn't that bad and the flavor was amazing to me. The roll is also done with cinnamon as well. The guy making the rolls was super nice and customer service IMO goes a long way. Definitely worth it IMO. read more

Saw this at the Vancouver Food Truck Festival so I had to try it out. Slavic Rolls, where have you been all my life? These giant tubular pastries with tasty fillings of your choice. I had Bavarian Cream and Strawberry in mine and it was awesome. The cinnamon sugar on the outside was caramelized and the pastry was crispy. Didn't feel too heavy or greasy. $6 was more than fair for this. You guys need to move to the Burnaby/Coquitlam area so I can get fat eating your tasty treats. read more

Solid 3.5 stars, esp. for service. Was here last month at the night market, smelled great and all, ordered the Nutella. Pretty much what you expected, though it was a bit cold and not as pumping hot as it looked. But the husband heard me complain, so he just walked over and gave me an entire new one, yay. The fruit preserve filling of the Slavic Rolls seems very artificial. The rolls themselves are also made with hydrogenated margarine.

I saw these guys at the Food Cart festival today. The rolls are cinnamon and sugar dusted rolls that are the size of a mug. They will the roll with filling. I am a Nutella whore, therefore, no second guesses as to what I had in my roll. Guy was super nice and the prices for the rolls were decent. read more

Like a donut, but better! These rolls are a unique must-try desert. The people who operate the truck are so friendly. I personally love the Turkish coffee that they make on this cart. Be warned though, it is STRONG and not for those who are sensitive to caffeine. My favorite roll fillings are the custard and lemon jelly. read more
