Day of my haircut, I arrived at Phoenix Salons in Roseville. I walked through the front doors and stood by the empty check in desk a few minutes before just deciding to find her suite myself. She was located more towards the back and her suite is clearly labeled "GoldenGlamBam". I was early for my appointment so I sat on a bench outside and then she showed up fairly soon after. She gets set up and welcomes me in. She's so friendly! I tell her what I was looking for and she reconfirmed the length of my cut. She shampoos and blow dries my hair, all the while we're just chitchatting. Did I mention how friendly she is?! I tell her about the couples photos I was going to take with my boyfriend the next day and ask about hair curling tips since my hair cannot hold curls. She mentions a few products and then continues on with my cut. After she was finished, she actually curled my hair for me and then instructs me on the technique and product she uses. After she was done, my hair held curls. Such healthy beautiful possible curls! So I'm writing this review a day after my haircut and my curls are still intact. Pakou made the impossible possible.

Parking is super easy and free, tons of spots since it's in a strip mall lot. Making appointments is incredibly simple and easy, you just go to their GlossGenius scheduling site and pick what services you'd like, then pick a day! You'll get a text confirmation after, and then you have to confirm your appointment before you come. That's helpful just in case you are apt to forget appointments, but I've never needed a reminder because I'm always so excited to come see her. She travels back and forth between home (MN), California, and New York just to do hair. It's safe to say she's got loyal clients all over the country! She's a master colorist and if you look at her portfolio the proof is in the pudding. Mmm....pudding. I figured after 4 years it was worth updating my review after making the big leap from natural to red (again)! I still love Samantha as much as I did the first day I came in as a new client. She always makes you feel right at home and is quick to give you advice on the look you're going for. 98% of the time I walk out of there feeling amazing and the very few times I haven't been so sure she was quick to make it right, with a smile on her face. For instance, this time, the first two blow dries after my color the red was looking a lot darker than planned (my hair REALLY pulls red, this is no fault to her skill). Despite being one of her last clients of the day (and the fact that she had a date to go on that evening) she didn't hesitate to make sure I absolutely loved what I was walking out of there with, date be damned, and we got it lightened up to the perfect shade. My only criticism, if any, is that she often overbooks herself and can be working on as many as 3 clients at the same time. Despite this, her time management is great and she gets it all done. But, Sam, girl, you gotta give yourself a breather so you can take care of yourself! Order the Jimmy Johns, woman! Don't hesitate booking with Sam but just know she's a busy lady and your experience may be a hair different (no pun intended!) from being in someone else's chair. Just go with the flow, be clear with what you want, let her know if something isn't quite as you wish (if applicable), and sit back and relax! Well.. you may not relax too much because Sam has always got some sort of amazing or gut busting story in her pocket.

I'm naturally very light but wanted to go dark for fall, instead she made my roots black that blended into a brassy blonde and overly toned blonde tips. I could tell it looked way too dark but she took me outside and took amazing photos so I thought it was just the lighting. When I got into my car I saw my botched hair job and cried the whole way home. Samantha offered to fix my hair but honestly I don't want her touching my hair again. I have to spend $400 to fix this black band she did on my roots. I'm not posting this to bash Samantha at all, I just wanted to share my experience. Note: As I said Samantha offered to fix my hair but for obvious reasons I didn't want her touching my hair again. I had to sit in a salon for over 4 hours removing the horrible color she put on my roots that were pretty damn close to black. I only asked for a refund two days after I got my hair done because the stylist fixing my hair said it was one of the worst color corrections she's had to do and told me I should get my money back! I had orange stripes all through out my head. The girl who fixed it, did AMAZING. If you're looking for balayage I definitely recommend the Beauty Room in Minneapolis! They know what they're doing!

After that initial trim I booked an appointment for August for a cut and color after talking to the person who was cutting my hair and she talked about her experiences with cut and color. I should have asked to see her portfolio. I used this reference photo for color and asked for a shag haircut in addition to this. I clearly didn't get that color. Instead of this it was incredibly chunky early 2000s highlights. Maybe for someone but not for me and not what I asked for. I went into another salon in the greater twin cities area the next day and they blended it as much as they could. I don't have photos of this but they were surprised my hair had been profesionally done as they found "numerous" spots throughout my hair where the lightener had fallen out of foils and created round bleach spots within my hair. I also had them check the cut and they said that the cut wasn't a true shag and that the layers had been to bluntly cut and were cut to cave inward instead of blend and go out. No clear photos of that either unfortunately. Im giving two stars because everyone was professional and kind and they used nice products and there was another women there when I got my service done that genuinely seemed to love how her color and cut from another stylist turned out, however before you book I would STRONGLY recommend asking to see examples of someone's portfolio first. I wish I would have done that as it would have saved me over $200 to get my hair redone if I had went elsewhere to begin with.

After being greeted with a rough-looking, gum-smacking receptionist, I realized she was Claire, the stylist I booked an appointment with. Reluctantly, I sat down for my consultation. We discussed that I wanted a healthy trim of about an inch. She asked if I liked my longer layers and I said yes. As the appointment went on, I realized she was cutting a lot of hair. (Upon entering the salon, my hair was midway down my back and my first layer started at my shoulders.) She mentioned that my layers were cut strangely and so I figured she was cleaning it up. She kept cutting and cutting and I thought to myself "this is the most thorough cut I have ever had" but as it went on, it appeared that she kept trying to even up what she had just cut on one side of my head with the other side. It wasn't until I saw her take a LARGE amount of length of that I got really concerned. I proceeded to get a fair-at-best blow dry (the hairdryer was super hot on my scalp and I had to ask her to turn it down) and tried to remain calm when she showed me the final product. "Maybe once I style it myself it will look better" I thought. I live not too far away and I jetted home. I took another pass at it with my own tools and product and stood there in complete shock. My once flowing locks are now more like Jennifer Aniston circa 1995. I am beyond devastated that after I have been trying to grow my hair for years, it's now in the salon's garbage bin. I called the salon and spoke to Darrin, the owner. He was more than apologetic and offered me a full refund. He also did everything he could to assure me that that was not the type of experience he wanted for any of his clients. He listened and really seemed to care about my satisfaction. Unfortunately, it's too late and beyond repair. So, I don't think the salon itself is bad news, in fact, Darrin's customer service was incredible, but I would advise anyone to avoid Claire at all costs. I will be returning to my overpriced salon. At least before I left with all my hair.
