    Pool all to ourselves
    Dana S.

Had a free night to use on Hotels.com I used it for a night to go to Hershey park which isn't too far from Harrisburg. Ended up only paying 60 bucks of my own money and I'm so happy we stayed at this hotel. There are mixed reviews on Yelp so I wasn't sure whether it would be a great stay or one from hell. So the lobby area is a bit intimidating because they have bullet proof glass where the employees are at check in and the lobby isn't anything spectacular/ but the service was good, there was a indoor pool, and when we got to the room- it' was super clean, had soft beds, pillows and it was just a very comfortable and clean room. Me and my daughter had a chance to swim in the pool and we had it to ourselves for a good hour since no one else was there. When it came to breakfast- wow just wow- so good! Juices, tea, coffee, cereals, breakfast sandwiches, make your own waffles, fruits, yogurt and hot cereals were on the menu. The staff were constantly refilling and replenishing the items so everyone had enough to eat. Oh and they also had my favorite muffins- Otis Spunkmeyer blueberry muffins--- yummmmy!! I rated the stay 5 stars due to the fact they need to upgrade the lobby. I would definitely return.

Room and stairwell had a bad smell, beds were comfy, breakfast was OK, staff was friendly, but the bathroom was gross.

Visited the area for the weekend and decided to stay here overnight. This hotel is located in a very convenient location off of major roads. We got here a bit earlier than the check in time and was very pleasantly accomodated with a room with no hassel! This was a huge plus for us since we drove for hours before getting here. Front desk person was Matthew who was absolutely wonderful. He was kind enough to help us out with detailed local information and taking the time to explain to us. Truley appreciated his efforts! In anycase, the room was clean, beds were comfortable and the hotel provides free breakfast buffet & complimentary wi-fi access. There are coffee maker, fridge microwave and safe in the guest room. On the 3rd floor, there's laundry facility as well. There's a pool & cafeteria area where you can grab complimentary breakfast or eat what yoy've ordered in. For breakfast, coffee was fresh and being able to make mini waffles was a plus! Choices of sliced breads, English muffins, mini muffins, yogurts, eggs, sausages, boiled eggs and Diy mini waffle station provided. For drinks, coffee, tea, juices, water was present. They allow outside food and also provide menus for local delivery places. Across from this hotel, there are several restaurants (Moe's, Chili's etc) and shops (target, jc penny, payless etc) in about 3 min drive. Literally it's on the other side of the highway If you are heading to Hersey park, this is a pretty good place to stay. Without traffic we were able to get to Hersey Park area in about 17 mins.

Very easy and friendly check in process. My room was not completely ready upon check in, but it was okay. Plus, the staff made it right while I grabbed a bite to eat and ran a couple of errands. The room was great - very spacious. Bed was comfortable.

    Disgusting toilet!!!!

We will never stay at this hotel again. Starting with the lobby area which needs new furniture, there was no one at the desk. Had to wait for the staff member to finish her cigarette outside for our check in. She had a mask on but it wasn't covering her nose. Signs are posted that you must wear a mask inside the hotel but not enforced at all. Our second visit to the front desk we were greeted by a man with no mask at all. They do have a plastic barrier but he was in the lobby area watching TV. Once we arrived in our room I was thankful I brought my own cleaning supplies and Lysol. We had our 2 grand kids and didn't want to switch hotels at night because they were tired so I cleaned the room. Please check out the photo of the disgusting toilet. We also brought our own sheets, pillows, and blankets or we would have left immediately. In this COVID era and at their prices this is totally unacceptable. Even without COVID the lack of cleaning was unacceptable.

Yes that is a dirty diaper.

Yesterday, when I went to court, there was no "partisan ferocity." I believe that is what made me so upset--my hearing had to be rescheduled, leaving me with extra time to hang around Central Pennsylvania. On the plus side, it gave me time to leave a few beautiful reviews. I walked right over to the Hilton because I didn't want to waste the parking I had already paid for. I went in to order an Old Fashioned. I visited this place before the New Year and had one then, but it seems nothing is ever quite like the first time. This was my third time having this drink here. The first time was amazing; it was made to absolute perfection, and I fell in love with it. As I have said in my previous reviews, I don't drink to get drunk--I drink for the taste. That is exactly what I was looking for this time, but the drink was watered down. I couldn't taste the citrus, the bitterness, or the sweetness I expected. I don't know if it was the atmosphere or the mood, but I attribute the quality to the bartender. He gave me no eye contact while I was inside the establishment. I tried to initiate small talk, and still, there was no eye contact, so I place the disappointment on him. The other staff members were very nice, which was great. I was there midday before the lunch hour, which made the environment more enjoyable. I turned a negative into a positive by sitting outside to enjoy the nice weather and a beautiful cigar. (If you want to find a good cigar spot, check out my other reviews to see where I normally get mine!) I tried to pair this drink with my cigar, but it disappointed me; it did not compliment the cigar at all. It didn't do what I needed it to do, which was provide a great taste. My Ratings: Atmosphere: 4.7/5 Bartender Experience: 2.7/5 Drink Quality/Consistency: 2.5/5 It is all about consistency. As a customer, I feel the experience should always be top-tier. I hope my review helps you make your decision on visiting this establishment.

But those are about the only redeeming qualities. The first room I checked into, the HVAC unit sounded like a jet plane getting ready to takeoff. The second room had an odor about it - - a mixture of old smoke and the ozone treatment they used to try to purify the air. Within 30 minutes I felt like someone was standing on my chest because the air quality was that horrible. Moreover, both of those rooms were so small that you could not open the hotel room door if the bathroom door was open. Room three put me up on the 10th floor that was more spacious, but the HVAC unit had to run constantly. It was either on or off and when you turned it on for heat, the dust smell was overpowering. I had to leave it off overnight, so my allergies wouldn't trigger an asthma attack and I woke up to a 62° room. If I tried to sit in the chair by the HVAC unit, the musty smell was overpowering. Let's talk about housekeeping now. They did come to my room every day and pick and chose what they did. They never made the bed, would take some towels, but not others. But they did empty the trash. The fitness room appears pretty solid. However, pick your equipment wisely as some of the treadmills are on the same runway as that HVAC unit noise canceling headphones were definitely in order. The staff I encountered were friendly enough, but they were obviously annoyed with me for complaining. Checking out was definitely the most pleasurable part of my stay.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing Marriott stays we've had. We arrived around 3:00 p.m. When we first pulled into the parking lot, the building looked older and somewhat run down. We went inside to see if our room was ready, and the front desk associate said it was. After checking us in, I mentioned that our friends would be arriving later and asked if they could be placed near us. She gladly said she would put a note in the computer, which I appreciated. As we walked to the elevator, the hallways felt very warm and had a muggy, musty smell. When the elevator doors opened on the third floor, there were multiple trash bags sitting throughout the hallway. We opened the door to our room and immediately noticed the same musty odor. The room was freezing because the air conditioner had been set to 64 degrees. After putting our bags down, I opened the refrigerator to put away a few items and was shocked by how dirty it was. The shelves looked like they had been wiped with the same dirty rag used in room after room without being rinsed. The couch had several burn holes and looked like food and drinks had been spilled on it many times. The carpet also appeared to have been vacuumed very poorly, almost as if someone simply made a quick pass over it. Another frustration was that the room only had one telephone, located on the work desk, and it didn't even work. We tried calling the front desk for assistance but couldn't get through, so we ended up having to walk downstairs to get what we needed. That shouldn't happen at any hotel, especially a Marriott property. Then our friends arrived. Their room was supposed to be ready by 4:00 p.m., but at 4:40 they were told they would have to be sent to another hotel because no rooms were available. About 10 minutes later, they were suddenly given a room, although it was on a different floor. Unfortunately, their room had the same musty smell and lack of cleanliness as ours. Breakfast was another disappointment. The egg omelet was rubbery, and the chicken sausage patties were so dried out they were like beef jerky, as if they had been repeatedly microwaved. Just after 9:00 a.m., I watched the breakfast attendant carry a plate overflowing with sausage patties down the hallway while only a handful remained in the serving pan. It would have made much more sense to keep the food available for guests instead of removing it. Throughout our stay, I also overheard several guests asking for towels, bedding, and toilet paper because their rooms didn't have enough supplies. When we left each morning, I also noticed there were no housekeeping carts or staff on any of the floors, something we normally see at Marriott properties. We've stayed at many Marriott hotels over the years, and this property simply did not meet the standards we've come to expect from the brand. Sadly, we won't be returning.

The purpose was simply to have a place to sleep overnight because we were attending Hershey Park for holiday festivities. We didn't need a glamorous hotel room, which we understood going in. We just wanted beds, hot water, a little cleanliness, and maybe some coffee. Unfortunately, none of those basic expectations were met at this establishment. We checked in around 8:00 PM after dark. The beds didn't have any blankets, the mattress was uncomfortable, and the room was unclean--we even found a wad of hair just lying around. The next morning, we checked out the breakfast to see if there was anything worthwhile. There were some options, but everything was cold. We decided to skip it and just get coffee. The coffee had grounds floating in it and was very gritty, so I ended up going to a nearby gas station instead. On my way there, I noticed the trash cans in the parking lot were still overflowing, just like they had been the night before. It seems like whoever is running this place does not care at all. There are no standards. Even when I tried to give the hotel one last chance and take a shower to rinse off and restart my day, the shower was ice cold--there was no hot water in the entire establishment.

We were given a tour of the newly renovated rooms and were told the history of the Penn Harris Hotel . They have a display case of Penn Harris artifacts and a large mural honoring its history is in the lobby. If you look close you can see a picture of the original hotel in one of its sections. I was really impressed with the beautifully updated bar, (also playing along) staffed with the best, straight out of the 1920's! There was a live pianist as entertainment, a gentleman with a long history of playing there!. And lastly, a five course dinner each perfectly paired with wine! First course: Sparkling Rosé paired with a focaccia bread and whipped butter with a side of garlic spread or tomato jelly. Second Course: A dry Red wine and the best salad I've ever tasted. It had squash, Brussels sprouts, chickpeas, and craisins, on arugula. Maybe some light oil and a sprinkle of salt... it was so light, fresh, and flavorful! Third course: Semi Dry wine. Shredded Brussels sprouts with bacon jam and a balsamic vinaigrette. Fourth: the same wine with the main course of Roasted duck, mashed potatoes and carrots Fifth: White wine paired with a deconstructed tiramisu! I don't even like tiramisu and I ate mine and half of someone else's. I don't think there was one thing put in front of me that I didn't like. The Penn Harris Hotel chef and staff really outdid themselves with this event. I cannot wait to see what the Historic Penn Harris has in store for us in the future!

The last two nights we realized that if someone is in the hallway it sounds like they're in the room with you, and you can hear the people above you and beside you moving around in their rooms. So it doesn't appear a lot of effort to soundproof was made. Another thing to note is that while they have laundry machines available for use in the hotel, they only take quarters. From the noise aspect alone we would probably choose to stay somewhere else, although with ear plugs it was manageable.
