7/29/24 I've been going to here since 1979 when I worked nearby, and my teacher assistant Frank introduced me to Slicks. Ever since, I try to stop by about three or four times a year to enjoy the food and ambiance. The owners Mike and Barb are retiring 7/31/24 after fifty years. May they enjoy their retirement. The new owners, a couple from Schenectady, will keep the name and the menu. Bravo! It is a lot of work and long hours, but it was evident that the owners enjoyed their business and their customers, many of whom became regulars. You noticed that the food they prepared was made with love and expertise. It was consistently good. The menu has been constant over the years because it pleased customers and made the place a success. The roast beef and turkey are cooked daily. Plus, the potato salad and macaroni salad are made in house every morning by Barb. I had to stop by today to honor my memories of eating here over the years. I had a huge roast beef and turkey mix on rye with thousand island dressing and macaroni salad. Delicious as always. I took half home for my husband to enjoy. He did! My friend enjoyed a huge roast beef sandwich and a potato salad side. Even the dill pickle spears taste incredible here! It must be the yummy sandwich. We sincerely hope the quality and ambiance continue with the new owners. If that is the case, I look forward to supporting them. It is so much better than a chain restaurant. read more

Slicks 1804 Tavern in Schenectady reopened on September 9, 2025 to the delight of many previous customers. We were not disappointed. New owners, Andy and Maureen Ottati have made several renovations while maintaining the same friendly atmosphere and delicious huge sandwiches. Our roast beef and turkey sandwiches were piled high with meat and accompanied with potato or pasta salad and chips. Each of us brought half of our sandwich home to enjoy later. Lunch comes by everyday requiring sustenance. On a whim, we decided to try Slick's. Parking was annoying since it is all street / pay parking. Ok, I bit the bullet and paid for parking and walked a couple of blocks to try out Slick's. That particular day we were the only patrons for a while. It's a small darkish bar with two people at the bar taking orders, filling beverage requests and making lunch for patrons. The menu is very small consisting of 5 sandwich choices (roast beef, ham, turkey, corned beef and tuna). Sandwiches are accompanied by a choice of potato, mac, cole slaw or a pickle along with a pile of potato chips. Both of us chose the roast beef for our luncheon repast. Meats are sliced to order for each sandwich. I had roast beef on rye bread with swiss cheese and russian dressing. This is where the surprise comes in. I ate half of one side of the sandwich just with my fork. I could not get my mouth around the delivered food. I am also glad that I chose the pickle since I obviously was not going to finish my sammy. That being said, we took home a half of both sandwiches and was able to get 2 more lunches from the meat. Love the sandwiches here since I was a kid. They are huge & great meats, plus the beer's are quite vast. A must try if in the area.

The sandwich is huuuuuuuge. It is also very simple and pretty tasty. I got the turkey. It is by no means roasted in house but it was light and fresh. They use Hellmans Mayo which was a plus. No tomatoes as a sandwich option but they did have shredded lettuce. They had three bread options and I went with the rye which was fresh and delicious. You can add cheese. I had to open my mouth extra wide to take a bite. They have other sandwich options too.... Roast Beef, Ham and Cheese, Corned Beef and Tuna. I will let you know which one I like best :) Each sandwich platter comes with an option of macaroni salad, potato salad or pickles. I went with the potato salad which was definitely homemade and really good. The other reason to visit Slick's is the history. It is another Schenectady institution that dates back to the 70's. Pictures of old Schenectady line the walls. They have the equivalent of a beer museum in the cooler and drum roll please........ they have Utica Club on tap! I bet there are maybe 10 bars in the USA that have this historic beer on tap. So, go back in time, order a Utica club and a no frills gargantuan sandwich (bring a friend to share it if you aren't a fresser like myself) and enjoy a historic Schenectady gem. read more

EXACTLY what I was expecting and it didn't disappoint!! See my pic of our giant corned beef and a giant turkey sandwiches... over 2" thick! If eaten in house, the sandwiches come with mac or potato salad and chips. The one cost saving corner I noticed was the lack of tomatoes as a possible addition to your sandwich. Had a great pint and great service that came with some good conversation. There is a lot of history at Slicks. The walls are covered with pics of old Schenectady. Place was nice and clean, like a bar keep still dusts and wipes everything down waiting for the next customer... The two sandwiches, with a pint of craft beer and a can of coke (served with a glass of ice) concluded with a $25 bill. I'll definitely be back, but I'll split a sandwich next time! If you think sandwiches are all about the meat - and you're the kind of person who likes cold-cut platters, this place is for you. The meat to bread ratio is unfathomably high. Sure, you THINK you've seen meaty sandwiches, but that was probably 1-1.5" of meat on a grinder or kaiser roll. Here they come with 2"-3" of meet on regular sliced bread. There was a bar I went to when I was 19 called Annabel's. [Update: SHAZAM, it's still there! http://www.yelp.com/biz/annabells-akron?osq=annabel%27s]. That year I worked three jobs (and when the drinking age was still 18, in another galaxy far, far away), one of which ended at 1 AM. The chief virtues of Annabel's, a dark narrow hole in the wall bar, were (1) very cheap beer, (2) you could get a sandwich late, which consisted of white bread and your choice of three meats, with a bag of chips on the side, and (3) after "last call" the regulars could repair to the back room which had been designated a "private club", so you could still get a beer after the place "closed". It was like a real-life, dirty and cheap "Cheers". Once they knew your name, you were in the "private club". Slick's may be the Schenectady Annabel's: the clientele and decor haven't changed a bit, other than aging 30 years. Given my advancing age, finding a joint where everybody is older than me is either comforting or a harbinger of things to come, I'm not sure what. In any event, I was the only person not greeted by name upon walking in the door. The very definition of an old-school neighborhood bar. Yes yes, you get your choice of five sandwiches, which consists of approximately nine pounds of meat between two pieces of bread, plus pickles or coleslaw or potato salad, plus chips, all of which are out of some industrial container. Totally exactly what I need, sometimes. Sandwiches between $8.25 and $9.75. There's also one soup of the day, which I also suspect comes out of a giant restaurant service can. And your choice of cheap but decidedly non-crafty beers. I like it but it's sort of an all or nothing place: great for a regular stop but not for a special trip. Still, go once, and experience Old Schenectady. No pun intended. OK, pun intended. Also, somebody has deliberately jiggered the parking meters out front so they never expire, which really takes me back to the old days. read more

Slicks is a little hole in the wall I discovered years ago who's claim to fame is, "More than you possibly can eat" sandwiches. I would have loved to have gone today. Roast Beef with Russian and Swiss...do not under any circumstances forget to add horse radish and sliced onions. 30 years ago they had Matt's on tap and now they have graduated to Utica club...staying close to their upstate roots. I graduated from Union College in 1987. That was the last time I was to Slick's, until last month. All the old great, amazing, fantastic memories I had of Slick's all still exist (and then some). The service used to be not so good. The service now was fantastic. But, really, Slick's is all about the sandwiches, drinks and prices. The sandwiches were still outstanding. There were 5 of us and everyone really enjoyed their sandwiches. The prices can't be beat. The drinks, still a lot to choose from at great prices. We are new in the Community. We've enjoy eating out at all of the wonderful restaurants and meeting new people. We tried Slick's today. The sandwiches look so wonderful. We were greeted by an older gentleman that became very busy, as a 3 top and 2 top walked in behind us. We were asked if were going to eat and we said yes. Asked about the "soup of the day" and he walked away. We ordered beverages and we just sat. We noticed he was making sandwiches for the people that sat down in the Tavern after us. Maybe because we are new and not considered as locals yet. We finished our beverages and asked to tab out. We were so hungry that we didn't want to wait any longer. Went to SLICKS today and got the ham & cheese on rye with onions and spicy mustard. The sandwich was piled high and just to tastie for words. It is the BEST place for fresh made sandwiches. recently moved right down the street from this sandwich shop and i love sandwiches so i was really looking forward to trying it but unfortunately i was very disappointed. yea the sandwich has a lot of meat but other than that there was nothing redeeming. there is no mention of tuna in the macaroni salad and we paid something like $3 for the tiniest little cup of it which got thrown out anyway. if you're putting tuna in the macaroni salad you really need to put that on the menu and call it tuna macaroni salad. they also wouldn't take a credit card number over the phone which is extremely inconvenient in 2022. read more

New to the community. Slick's was close by so brought my mom and sister for a drink. The bartender, I believe her name was Barbara, kept shushing my sister whenever my sister would raise her voice. Slicks is famous for its one lb sandwiches, but when I finally went and ordered a corn beef on rye, I realized just how much I didn't care for that much meat on my sandwich. It's served with a freaking fork. I couldn't taste the mustard or horseradish. And the best part is that Mike the owner is a complete snotty asshole. I dropped more money in his bar on a Sunday than he probably made all weekend and all he was worth was one smart ass comment after another. Went for lunch for the first time on Friday. Had a giant and tasty Roast beef sandwich 2 inches thick on rye with Swiss and mayo. Basic presentation with chips and a side of Mac and tuna salad. It was delicious!!! Enjoyed every bite. A bit small but cozy. Would spend an afternoon drinking Utica Club on tap with a nice selection of scotch. Nice place to chill and enjoy friends company. Others I was with had the turkey and roast beef, all of them were comparable. The old tavern environment and simple no-frills service were good and should be expected.
