With no sign of the "drumming" abating, I went to the SoR to see about real drum lessons for Felix. We had an honest and friendly conversation about how most five-year olds are not mature enough to learn much from drum instruction yet... they come in, bang on the drums, have a fantastic time, and maybe they will remember the names of the drums and cymbals. He said that with that info, if we want to enroll Felix, he's sure the drum instructor would be glad to have him and would do his best to help Felix have fun AND learn something... but don't have high expectations. He suggested an awesome alternative that they offer just for preschoolers... their eight-week Little Wing program (awesome name, btw). Skilled preschool teachers walk the kids through an intro to music, an intro to guitars, an intro to the bass, making their own guitar, intro to the drum kit, making their own drum kit, intro to the keyboard, making their own keyboard, intro to voice, recording their voices, sound detectives (headphones), and band rehearsal. They have small class sizes and at $160 for 8 one-hour sessions, it's a real bargain. I was so glad that they suggested this more age-appropriate program... he could have sold me a month of lessons for more $, and we would be less happy in the long run. Once Felix is old enough for proper drum lessons (age 7 - 8), if he's still interested, we'll be back at the School of Rock.

After completing what at the time was a 5-day intro course (now known as MT 1), I returned to the clinic empowered and excited. I have used the principles and science that I learned in the course ever since. I have explored many other avenues with regards to manual therapy including Maitland, McKenzie, Upledger, and Mulligan. Of course I have learned something from each of these schools of thought, but nothing has compared to the systematic and science based approach that is the heart of each Grimsby course I have completed. I am now on my second go around with some courses and will be finishing the COMT soon. My only regret is that I did not enroll in the residency program at the beginning of my career. I strongly encourage any PT who loves manual therapy and craves practicing at the top of their profession, to seriously consider completing a residency with the Ola Grimsby Institute. If this is not feasible, I also strongly recommend any of their courses, particularly MT 1 and all of the STEP courses. The only negative I have to say about the institute is that some of their instructors have a habit of being somewhat critical or negative about other continuing ed programs. This is unnecessary as the Grimsby program is so strong that it does not need to denigrate other programs to build itself up. This is the reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5.

With that said I would like to give my honest assessment of Skillspire a coding bootcamp in Bellevue, WA. Skillspire was founded by Yasmin Ali, who created Skillspire to help those who cannot afford to attend college, but also, and I believe more importantly, to help people of marginally discriminated populations find technical work that they can build a life around. For this, I absolutely applaud her and Skillspire! The instructors at Skillspire are absolutely top notch. They know their respective skillset inside and out, and they do not hesitate to share; with passion, humility and humor their knowledge and wisdom. In the 16 week course that I took we were challenged by countless interruptions (covid) throughout the course. The course started in January and ended in May, at first we had in person instruction, but of course we were forced to move online due to social distancing measures. My instructor Farhad, took it all in stride, held us all accountable and made sure to work with us individually during this difficult time. He was encouraging and helpful for each of us in class and personally, I will forever be grateful for his graciousness. The Java course that I took was based on multiple projects building up to a final project that we were encouraged to team up for at the end. We also focused on using git, specifically GitHub for storing source code but also as a great tool for showcasing your skills in terms of coding and writing. We also focused on cloud computing for building full scale cloud based java applications. I went in to this course not knowing Java at all and came out absolutely confident in my ability to pass a coding interview in Java. Currently I am looking for work as a software engineer and I have the upmost confidence that I will be able to get started on a new career adventure with ease thanks to Skillspire offering career building services. Terri Pauly is a godsend as a resume/interview coach. She knows her stuff and exudes passion when she is helping you find your dream job. Skillspire offers top-notch coding instruction from industry professionals, excellent career building services and has a mission that is admirable and needs to succeed. I get the supply and demand business model but it just goes to show this place is more about making money than it is about fostering young minds. They don't communicate anywhere on their website when prices will go up or when the sale ends. If more people sign up for that class (which as customer you do not have optics to), then they will all of a sudden increase the price. Other camp providers clearly state on their website when prices will go up. Other camps offer early bird registration so as customers if we missed that is too bad but at least customers had the chance to plan accordingly and is not a sudden shock. My daughter (13 years old) went to summer camp at this place for a couple of summer when she was a younger and it was one of her least favorite camp. I thought I give them another chance with my 5 year son but when I try to register for the week I want this summer, they suddenly changed the price. When I inquire why, they simply said because more spot filled up. I won't be going back her for any future classes/camps. I do not agree with their business practices. And honestly there are so many other and better camp providers around the area, I see no reason to even consider this one going forward and I would warn other parents about this business. Responding to business comments: Of course the business doesn't like my review or perspective. Unfortunately if what they say in their response to my review was true at the time of my email inquiry they should had mentioned the fine prints on their website at that time. Again, suddenly raising prices when certain level of class attendance reach and not showing the numbers of spots taken on the website is not transparent business practice. Also, "sale" is not the same as early bird prices. Their email about early special came out to family on March 5th and by Tuesday when I try to register, the price already went up. Based on their response of not admitting to being more transparent really does not build trust in customer. I truly hope they make efforts to improve customer service and business practices. They definitely lost my family as a customer and potential loss of other customers.

I sighed up my 8 and 10 yo boys for summer camp in July this year. I was really surprised to learn that my boys disassembled to the last screw and then assembled a PC, turned it on and the PC worked! it was fun seeing pride on their faces :) They learnt the names and the purpose of all the components of a PC, laptop, and XBox. They also learnt how to use a camera and take good pictures, the basics of photography and got high quality portrait prints at the end of the camp. I would definitely recommend this school to my friends. I am thinking of signing my kids up for afterschool classes as well.

The curriculum is advanced and individualized to a degree you won't get in public school. The staff takes time to ensure all children are taught how to learn, learn, and (most importantly) to enjoy learning and staying curious. I won't say more about the academics, you can look up how great they are online. But I will say they don't break kids like other aggressive academic private schools, they make them love learning. The nutrition is top notch. They feed them "home cooked" healthy organic meals 4-6 times a day. Allergies accounted for. No cakes or sweets allowed and each child gets a classroom bday celebration. Arts are built into the curriculum: culinary arts, painting, music and dance with performances, gymnastics and you even get a speech therapist. Kids are with two teachers: English speaking and Russian speaking. This was a major deal for me in terms of importance. The school is high in security and cleanliness. I know my kids are safe and I get photo updates of their time here. The school doesn't teach religion, politics, or gender stuff. That stays with the parents. I love this. It's one of the main reasons I'm here. But they are still teaching kindness, diversity and are strict on anti bullying. The school has hundreds of options for after school programs and care inclusive of science, robotics, musical instruments etc. But most importantly... I love the people. Everyone knows my kids from the daycare to the administration to the cooks to the director of the school. It feels like a warm and safe home. My kids feel comfortable and safe. They are welcomed with kindness. And I feel like they really care. The director of the school called me on the phone to tell me about my son's Iowa test and how she was concerned that someone as smart as him wasn't trying harder to take it. That level of care is so impressive to me. Hands down one of the best decisions I've made for my kids coming here. It is expensive! But very comparable to other private schools in the area. Only thing I can say is I wish the big school events (like graduation and festivals) were a bit more seamlessly organized.
