My favorite nursery in the area. The prices can be a bit high, however selection is unique and I have always gotten *the best* quality plants from here-- unlike other nurseries in the area, I have never had an issue with plants from here bringing in diseases or unwanted pests. I was reflecting today on some of my favorite plants in my garden, and realized that all of them have come from Sloat. Service isn't aggressive, however when you ask questions the knowledge pours out of the employees. I haven't taken advantage yet of the rewards program, but there is one available. read more

Went there today, May 5th. What a dump! Their vegetable plants were welted and tiny and way over priced. Their herbs had tiny little sprouts that had no root systems. Again way over priced, three times the cost of Home Depot. Inside was no better, poor selections and very expensive. That's the last time I'm wasting my time going there!! read more

With my newfound love for planting indoors and encouragement from my landscaper architect friend, came across this jewel. We have visited three of their locations so far and loved this one! They have the most adorable pots and saucers available specially if you are looking for those miniature ones. He assisted with a special order of large pots for our garden, where he tracked down the exact product we desired. Its early Monday morning with barely any customers in the store. I walked past several employees in the outdoor garden area speaking to my family about looking for roses. Nobody acknowledged our presence nor even made eye contact with us. My husband went inside the store and spoke to a lady named Jane. He said she just looked at him up and down, let out a big sigh before answering his question. I noticed 100% of the employees and customers were Caucasian, my family isn't so it gave me a feeling of being unwanted at the store. We left immediately after 10 minutes. read more

Extremely friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and just all around great place to be for your garden needs. They take the time to figure out what the best solution is for you and your needs. Great recommendations and they're always conscious on price and not just trying to upsell you. Their rose selection was disappointing but after speaking with one of the associates she explained why. They didn't have what I was looking for but quickly found it at another location. Most impressive was I had an question about a disease one of my flowers had. The associate didn't have the answer so she put it out over the radio and received an immediate response. With Everyone flooding nurseries and home garden centers this has not been my experience. Usually the request fell on deaf ears and it's very hard to find an associate to help you. This location is well staffed and well educated. It's just like Navlets was with a different name. Beautiful products, friendly staff, I got no complaints. Join their rewards and kids programs if you shop there frequently. Parking is easy. Went back for a second time today because they had the lemon cucumber seedlings we needed. Again, very nice service and fantastic products. They are pricey, so this isn't your cheap Home Depot three for a dollar tomato plants. The Beebalm and grass thing that I picked up last week are doing beautifully and growing. The only downside is the bathrooms absolutely reek. I don't know who died in there, or what matter of atrocity was committed, but my daughter and I could barely stand to be in the building. Extremely rude and snippy customer service over the phone. Called to clarify whether or not in-person shopping was allowable due to the pandemic because their phone message differs from their physical storefront message. Not only do they give you the run-around with the answering machine, but once I was able to reach a person, I was immediately INTERRUPTED and responded to with a condescending "Ma'am, did you listen to our message???" This customer service person was not interested in fully hearing my 5 second question and helping me. I do not recommend this service. Update: visited the center in the hopes of having a pleasant experience. Needed help so asked Gina--bad idea. Pretty sure I know who answered the phone now, as I was interrupted prior to even finishing my question, then condescended, once more, as if the answer to my question was obvious once I fully voiced it. My friend Diane picked up a Shooting Star hydrangea on a recent trip to Newport Beach. When she sent me a photo of it I completely fell in love w/ it, but when I started calling around, Berkeley Hort had none, though I wait-listed for one. East Bay Nursery was closed on Sunday and Monday. I didn't call Flowerland or Westbrae Nursery, so my research wasn't exhaustive. When we made arrangements to celebrate Father's Day at Esin I called the Sloat Garden Center that was in the same shopping center, I thought. After clearing it w/ his boss, a very helpful man told me he would put it in the tent where they hold things for people, despite there being a big sale Father's Day w/e. After lunch Alan and I drove over here and walked into the welcome coolness of the building. I hadn't been in here since it was Navlet's. We were greeted by two staff and when I told Ricardo what I was there for he went back to look for the hydrangea. After looking, he returned empty handed. He wondered if I had called the other location. I had no idea there was more than one location in Danville, but he explained that there was another location on Diablo Road and El Cerro. It had previously been Diablo Nursery but Sloat Garden Center had acquired it about 5 years ago. He offered to call and confirmed w/ Brett that they had the hydrangea for me and it was in a gallon container. Ricardo was so helpful and we were very appreciative. I do not normally leave reviews but I am extremely disappointed with this interaction. The Pleasant Hill location told me that this location might have what I was looking for but recommended I contact the store directly before driving down. I called several times but the phone was never answered (businesses can get busy, I understand this) and so I drove down. Upon arrival I explained to a team member what I was looking for and the situation. The woman told me that I must have contacted the wrong store because they had been answering their phones and that she couldn't help me because they didn't have what I was looking for. She never even bothered to check the stock. When I explained that I had been told they had the item in stock and that I had indeed called this location she asked to see my phone (which was in my car but offensive that she asked, I called the number associated with the location I arrived at through my map app), told me she knew they did not have the item, and went back to her task. The team member was rude and dismissive, I am extremely disappointed, and will not be returning to this location for any reason. read more

I love our neighborhood Sloat's - large lot with plenty of choices, very clean, and organized. If they don't have something you need in stock, they'll order it for you. Not only that, you can even call other Sloat location and they'll deliver it to whichever one is convenient. You know how folks that live and work near the beach are so chillaxed and happy? Of course, how can you be strangry (stressed & angry) by the beach? Well, I found it's the same with people in nurseries...particularly Sloat's. That's what I love most about them. People that work around plants are happy. Happy workers = happy customers! Every time I call with questions about their inventory or particular plant related problems, Juan and his team are ultra accommodating and super nice. They're even nicer and more accommodating in person. It's not pretentious either. They're knowledgeable and take their time explaining everything. For example, I had a slew of questions on winterizing plants and Juan went into depth explaining different winterizing solutions as well as breaking down variations in hardness zones and how that'd affect my tropicals survival. So awesome! Another thing that's cool are the in-store cash coupons you earn from spending a certain amount. They have expiration dates, but they'll take them regardless. For all these reasons, this Sloat's will be my go-to for all things landscaping related vs. Lowes or Home Depot for sure! read more

Sometimes, Home Depot really does not cut it. Thankfully, I was able to visit Sloat before Corona. This store has a myriad of plants, tools, and other things you never thought would look good in a garden. The staff is plenty helpful and will give you space but be available if you need assistance or need to mull over options. Very clean and organized in a thoughtful way. I needed plants for my office, and though the fig trees were out of my budget, I ended up getting an army of succulents. They're still alive and thriving months later, so I count it as a win. I have heard good things from a friend about the soil and dirt from here as well. read more

I have found my go too for soil and garden needs. Prior, I picked up a bag of soil from Home Depot, and found that after watering I would get fungus gnats. I would remove that soil and add more, because I thought I had done something wrong. Purchased soil from Costco with no problems or issues. Need more soil and it was not the season for Costco, i went back to Home Depot, thinking maybe it was just a fluke with the gnats. Same thing happened. Went in line and found Sloat Gardens, made a phone call and went to the location. Very nice location. Clean and well organized with plenty of garden needs. Anyway, I had spoke with one of the staff members of the experience I had and what brought me to them. Picked up a bag of excellent soil, and guess what? No fungus gnats at all. Neither before or after watering. They have too quality soil. I was at a point where I was afraid to water and had emptied my pot so many times until, I replaced it and dumped that bag of "organic" soil from Home Depot in the trash. So happy, I found this place. I told a friend about it and we are going to go together to get out items in the spring. read more

I'm an 81 year old and as you might imagine, I have underlying issues as well. Therefore I've been very reluctant to do any shopping anywhere during this virus. Finally, on Sunday, feeling very brave, and desperate for new plantings, i donned my homemade mask and went to Sloat's Nursery.
