I love the uniqueness of the decor - so many various, random pieces that many would recognize from the past - games, toys, Nintendo on old TVs that you can actually sit down and play if you want. Sly Grog is a *great*, venue for live music and hanging-out. A bit hard to describe: somewhat of a warehouse - very eclectic, with places more on the outside to sit & chill, a large dance area, and a smaller bar off to the side. Filled with funky / quirky decor. It can get pretty noisy when the performers are on stage, but that's why you're here. If someone recommended it to you, give it a try - there's a reason they did. read more

Although I am a comehere to Asheville, I'm a comeherealot and have checked out most of the hotspots. Sly Grog was new to me. I am puzzled by North Carolina's seemingly random club membership thing, but hey, I'm can now add my membership to Sly Grog to my Bywater membership. I went here specifically to see Vaden Landers but was charmed by the fair drink prices, funky decor, and the bartender's dog. There were not a lot of people there, but there should have been because the music was great; it's dog friendly, and it's a fun spot with a pool table and other arcade games to entertain the whole family. read more

Updated review**** I love Sly Grog. I have since the first time i visited. Some nights Kyle and I are the only patrons there which is nice because that gives us the whole space to lay on a couch or play games or do a puzzle. Sometimes like last night it is totally packed with live music. Also fun, eclectic groups of people tend to chill here. The bartender is really cool. Chats when you want to but leaves you be when you're just trying to chill. I love how mismatched and random everything is here. I love the toys, the games, the vintage decor. I want to love this place but it falls flat to me in many ways. The thing I dislike the most is every drink I have ordered has been flat. They don't have a soda gun and use soda out of already open bottles leading to drinks that are lack luster. The service has been slow for the times I have gone and the bartenders skills are not where they need to be to serve their specialty cocktails. I would hope if you make a specialty cocktail menu that all their staff would be able to make what was in it well. I was surprised at the low amount of alcohol in the jack and coke but even more the old fashioned I was served. These drinks were a huge disappointment. The one thing that keeps this place from being one star is that space is awesome and I like all the things that are spread out to do, for example ping pong, air hokey, video games and lots of little wind up toys at the bar. Stop in if your interested but get a drink somewhere else. read more

I like this place, so very Asheville! Tons of games ,figurines ,crochet blankets just cooky, weird , fun. Sly Grog has great events , I m going there once a month at least for the Monster Maker and it's lots of fun. The people that work there are super nice and it's a really chill atmosphere, there is usually easy parking or you can find something around it. So you might wonder why only 3 stars? Well the thing is that the drinks are cheap but they are also bad. I usually drink Old Fashion and tried it here twice, first you have to find somebody that's confident making it and then it got served once just with a cherry and ice the other time with soda water and also a cherry. Even for 9$ that's just not good. I still will be back now I just drink bourbon on ice , can't really do anything wrong there the beer looks ok so do the pretzel rolls. read more

It's pretty hard to standout in Asheville! Weird is our middle name! But Sly Grog manages to be SUPER weird in all the right ways. From the video games to the sofas, to the random memorabilia scattered around this place was fun! I'll go back for sure. read more

One of my favorite bars in Asheville. I mostly like how low key it is. They maintain a weird Asheville vibe without being overly hipster or elitist. The service is great! The decorum is a little wacky but it overall has a fun eclectic atmosphere with lots of nostalgic toys thrown into the mix. There is lots of outdoor seating and my dog was welcome to join me which is always a plus when trying to find a descent bar. Their drinks are reasonably priced and not overly complicated. It is definitely one of my go to hang out spots downtown. read more

This place is a total dump and quite possibly the worst place to go downtown. I should probably go get a tetanus shot today after last night. I love dive bars but this place should be condemned. I would have had a more open mind had they not charged my brother and I a $20 cover. They even taxed me on the cover so it was 21.40 for a terrible dj playing what I would describe as goth trance maybe? I wish I could give less than one star, don't be caught dead in this repugnant excuse for a 'private club' that will take your credit card , phone number and personal information for the privilege of charging a $10 taxed cover read more

My all-time favorite venue in town! This place has it all and has such an Asheville vibe to it. From the outside it looks like it would be a big car mechanics garage or warehouse, but as you look closer, you will see random babydolls and old-school games, even arcade games! There are couches everywhere that invite you to hang out outside and enjoy the games from your childhood. There is also a pool table and ping pong table outside. Once you walk inside, though, they have the total bar/music venue vibe. There are toys all over the bar for you to fidget with while you wait for your drinks. The bartenders, owner, sound technician, and literally just every staff member of this place is so nice and sweet. You get a total family vibe every time you go to the Sly Grog. This venue really knows how to book their entertainment, too! They are super supportive of the local underground rock musicians and even host shows that highlight people who generally only busk on the streets in downtown Asheville. During the warmer months, they host markets and festivals for local artists, jewelers, and antiquers. The Sly Grog is super welcoming and inclusive. A great locals hang out spot! read more
