The hubs and I had a great time enjoying a night cap and great live music at Crow & Quill! Full disclosure, I hate cover charges as I'm a (post-grad adult) local business lover who wouldn't dream of not patronizing the business I'm visiting, but I do fully support live music so when reached the door to be greeted with the "hi, there's a $10 cover per person for the band" I wasn't deterred, but only mildly annoyed as my visit wasn't based on a band (that I may or may not enjoy) but simply for the hopes of enjoying great craft cocktails and a speakeasy vibe as a tourist visiting a nice establishment. In my opinion: I should patronize the business and tip the band if I like them, and the business that hired them should pay them. No? With that, I'd bookmarked Crow & Quill on my Asheville to-do list and walked over from our hotel, so we paid and proceeded to the bar. One of the few cocktail bars open on a Monday night in Asheville. The entrance was pretty cool from the outside since you couldn't see in. Once we walked in, it felt like we went back in time and it was very whimsical. Our bartender Nick was amazing and so personable. They had an extensive wall of all kinds of liquor and I loved how it was all spread out and not neat and tidy. You could tell Nick was very knowledgeable and had passion for the mixology of cocktails. He made a killer smoked old fashioned and kept us company. This is the place to go for bourbon and whiskey lovers. Their selection is virtually unparalleled in the southern US and at very fair prices. When I think of places to go in Asheville, if you love good bourbon, then this is on my very short list. The service was very efficient and professional...I have no complaints there. I found everything to be clean and comfortable, so that added to the experience. Depending on when you visit, it can get busy, so a measure of patience is always advised. Prices...ah yes...we always have to discuss prices. But how do you do that in a place that caters to giving everyone something to enjoy regardless of budget. I know which bourbons I like, and so I'm happy to spend extra for what I enjoy. For the bourbon novice, you can find decent bourbons here for $12-15...a more refined taste you can expect to pay $18-25...but if you enjoy deeper pockets...the sky is the limit. This is one of the coolest and well done speakeasy concepts that I've been to in a while. It maintains a low key "respect the energy" vibe, the interior is a bit spooky and very much Edgar Allen Poe inspired, the mixologists were super friendly and true artists, and best of all the cocktails were amazing. I always try to order a bees knees at a cocktail restaurant as a measure and they hit a home run. Their Jackie Treehorn was delicious and drank so easily it was dangerous. This speakeasy type lounge is located on Lexington Ave. It's a bit hard to find (on purpose) but look for the lanterns and there is a "106"over the door. There is no sign. The night we went was cold and windy so the fact that they have hot cocktails was wonderful. I had hot buttered rum which hit the spot and they didn't skimp on the alcohol! It's definitely a lounge with almost a Victorian theme. Lots of antique furniture, plenty of seats and coffee table to sit around. It wasn't super loud so we were able to talk without having to yell. Always a bit of rarity. They're known for being a whiskey bar with good craft cocktails. I stuck with my buttered rum since it was hard to find at other places in Asheville for some reason. Staff was friendly as were the other customers. Nice to get into a discussion with a group of strangers that almost ended up being like friends by the time the night was over. I'm told that in the past they would have live music from time to time, not sure if that got tamped down due to the pandemic. Check this place out if you get a chance. When you go in, all furniture is antique style, dim lights, dried flowers and retro lamps adorn the space, and some other eclectic pieces. Plus the curio cabinets filled with Scotch and Whiskeys, are a very nice touch that adds character. When you go in, matching their style, is an antique writing desk, where they check you in, give you a membership card (if you don't have one already), check ID and vaccination card. Once this process is complete, you are free to sit anywhere you like and enjoy the atmosphere and drinks. You can't go wrong with either their specialty drinks or a dealers choice. Toward the end of a bar hopping day my friends took me to a favorite of theirs - The Crow & Quill. It was like stepping into a gothic story, a film noir, or perhaps where Poe would be inspired. Visually it was captivating - dried flowers, dim lighting, dark wood tones, antique furniture - it comes from a different time. Then there was upbeat tiki bar style music playing in the background and my mind twisted on itself because visually and audibly didn't match up! Not that I minded the fun, lively music but can't imagine Poe being inspired entirely with joyful sounds. I loved the experience! The bartenders were amazing. They made incredible drinks and made strong recommendations. It was fun sitting at the rail and talking to the bartenders, sharing in their knowledge, and seeing cool drinks being made. The service here was run by people who didn't have much bar experience. There was only one hostess/bartender and one pretty inexperienced bartender. Maybe it was because they were young but they couldn't handle the volume of people that were in the place. And we all know- speakeasies are attended by a certain kind of crowd. Usually people asking for bourbon that was in casks before they were even born. This is the 24th "speakeasy" I've been to and probably the one with least experienced bartenders/staff- and kind of the main attraction of speakeasies besides the ambiance and vibe. read more

We've been to speakeasies across the country and they've all used the large single cube. You're slacking hard. I get in Asheville the dress code is always hiking-casual but for a speakeasy bartender to be wearing a cutoff tshirt? Gross. You ask for proof of vaccinations not proof of a shower? Okay, so no dress code. Maybe others don't care. The final straw knocking off another star was the crappy live hick music. Someone had mentioned to one of my friends as we spent the weekend up in Asheville about this speakeasy in the north part of downtown that had all the feels of something you could expect back in the 1920s. With its unmarked, gray exterior and intimate, antiqued interior, The Crow & Quill offers a bonafide throwback to the speakeasies of a past time, with an elaborate array of whiskeys and spirits and steady roster of local jazz and swing bands to have a proper evening. Located on Lexington Avenue, The Crow & Quill only holds a couple of scores of people to where on most weekend evenings, there's a line to enter. The lines make the only distinction of the speakeasy's location due to no sign and the exterior front having no markings outside of the name subtlely edged over the door. Once you do enter, a cozy room of fabric drapes, antique rugs, and sofas envelop you with the bar encompassing the entire left wall of the speakeasy. They have an abundance of great whiskeys that I usually don't see elsewhere, such as the Old Forester Birthday Bourbon and other barrel-aged delights. If you're unsure of what to do order from the endless shelves of spiriting goodness, they have an extensive menu breaking down everything they have in stock. On the particular Saturday evening, we went, the eclectic energy and vibes of the music and the dancing surrounded us, helped by the band that played a gypsy-Russian type of jazzy jam that radiated throughout the room. At no point should any of your whiskey cocktails-especially what amounts to a smoked old fashioned-have a glass full of ice. I don't want to be a whiskey snob but cmon. Again, you are a whiskey bar. A single large cube should be standard or at the very least, offered. To serve me a smoked whiskey drink in a glass of small cubes is criminal. Second complaint and star gone. It's a Friday night. You're essentially a speakeasy. And your live music is a loud country band? Any country band? I know in the old west it was country music and whiskey so maybe it makes sense, but if you think you're giving off a "come and listen to some country and bluegrass" vibe, then you and I are not in the same establishment. You cant call, but their website said they would be open so we chanced it. we walked into We arrived early and it was still light out. Walking up must be tough when its darker, as it's just a simple door next to 2 similar doors. It would be difficult to find the entrance. Once inside we had to show proof of vaccination and create a membership. After all that we grabbed some seats and soaked in the atmosphere. It was a place full of eclectic things. But it was clean and organized so it was easy to scope it all out. there were any bottles, and when he brought the menus and the book of whiskey I could see they really had a strong assortment. I wasn't planning on having scotch but the menu book made it mighty appealing. So I had a few different scotch's. We really liked the place. Although we were the only ones there when we came in, which made sense on Christmas eve, the word was out as a dozen more people came in before we left. My first time in Asheville and this was one of the highlights of my trip. This place it's pretty hidden and you wouldn't know it was there unless specifically looking for it. They require proof of vaccination to enter which I loved. The whiskey/bourbon collection here is phenomenal! I even was able to get a pour of Pappy which I was surprised to see.
