It feels like they value profits over care which is extremely concerning when you are entrusting them with the care of your pets. I had a horrific experience that escalated from spinal pain to IVDD surgery. I felt very misinformed and neglected by the practice. The follow up was non existent and the little that did happen was more infuriating than helpful. My best friend just had an equally upsetting visit with her dog peeing blood. The city isn't lacking qualified vets. Go to one that isn't PE backed and actually cares about your animals. read more

DO NOT TRUST THIS VET. Our dog Vesper (a healthy, 1-YO border terrier) ended up in the E.R. 2 times following his neutering surgery due to the poor medical care he received at Small Door Gramercy. In fact, Dr. Joseph Tsang (Vesper's surgeon) & the support chat reps were so obviously negligent that SD offered to reimburse us in full for our out-of-pocket medical expenses related to Vesper's case...IF we would sign an NDA agreeing not to publicly share our story. In good conscience, we turned down their settlement offer. If we can prevent even one other dog from suffering unnecessarily the way that ours did, it's worth it to us. In the first few days post-surgery, Vesper was leaking fluid from his incisions, violently shaking, & unable to move on his own. We repeatedly sent messages, photos & videos of Vesper's condition to SD's support chat. They told us his symptoms were normal & no action needed to be taken. After 3 days, Vesper's abdominal wound completely split open. We notified SD that we were headed to the E.R. & brought our dog to VEG Chelsea. Vesper was admitted overnight for intravenous antibiotics & an emergency surgery to clean out his infected wound. The E.R. doc noted on Vesper's records that his other surgical incision showed signs of a potential infection, but Vesper had already gone through so much trauma that she didn't want to cut him open at an additional location. His E.R. records were sent to SD that day, but no one followed up. After the E.R., we scheduled a follow-up appt at SDG. His condition had not improved. He was shaking, unable to stand up, & had a dark red swollen bulge on his lower abdomen the size of a golf ball. Dr. Tsang took Vesper into a separate room to examine him & change his bandages, then brought him back in & told us he looked like he was healing fine. He was so clearly NOT fine, but Dr. Tsang was so self-assured that we let our concerns be silenced. Within 1 hour of returning home, we examined his incisions ourselves & were extremely concerned by the appearance. We messaged the chat with photos & videos & asked them to relay to Dr. Tsang. He replied that it was "just some post-op swelling" & suggested alternating hot & cold compresses. From this point on, we never heard from anyone at Small Door ever again. 18 hours later, we were rushing Vesper to the E.R. again. The swelling was worse & he was visibly suffering. We notified the chat, but never got a reply. When we got to VEG, the E.R. doctor said Vesper's case had become too serious for them to take on (it's a excellent E.R., but small), so they referred us to a specialized vet E.R. for more serious/complex cases (Schwarzman AMC - also excellent). Vesper was admitted there overnight for a 2nd emergency surgery. They told us that it was a good thing we had brought Vesper in when we did because his infection was spreading & he was becoming septic. Later that day, Vesper's medical records were sent from the E.R. to SD. No one ever followed up. Our dog was so sick that we ran 24-hour shifts of care for several weeks. For the next 3 months, we were dealing with the aftermath (an abdominal drain, infected stitches, etc.) & countless doctor's appointments as he gradually healed. Everyone is licensed to make mistakes, but it is how we respond to those mistakes that matters. Neither Dr. Tsang nor anyone at Small Door ever reached out to show any accountability for their repeated failures to provide reliable medical care for our dog. This speaks volumes. Small Door is a VC-backed veterinary sweatshop w a million-dollar marketing budget that enables them to masquerade as the sweet, caring vet-next-door. They may have a nice waiting room, but that has no relation to their quality of care. As a company, they lack adequate processes & training to provide quality veterinary care. I would like to give a shoutout to Dr. Hauser at VEG Chelsea & the incredible team at Schwarzman for saving our amazing little buddy's life & giving him the level of care that he should have had from the start. We now are very happily at Greenwich Village Animal Hospital. read more

The vet and nurse were so amazing. They did not try to gimmick me into paying for things that were not needed and they understood my worries and spoke very plainly to me. I don't recommend this place for the pricing alone. They will give you one price for a spay and then completely change the estimate and still force you to pay for the exam. I didn't need the exam given my puppy was examined 3 months ago, and they changed the spay estimate to ~$1800 after the visit. I was also told by the doctor it's because of COVID, and I wouldn't find a cheaper spay anywhere in New York. It's a nice office, and people are friendly, but don't trust their pricing. read more

I don't know where to start at! I'm literally in tears as I write this. My dog and I have been having issues finding a vet that will work with us. She has been admitted at emergency hospitals. So there is lots of trauma. Mila is very protective of me, therefore makes things very difficult. She's a big baby! SmallDoor took the time out to let mila warm up to them. Took a long time but they were very patient and understanding. We have joined the Small Door family! We like SD because: 1. Easy to make appointments - it was easy to make last minute appointment in a rather urgent situation 2. Price transparency - SD is slightly more expensive than our previous vet but their pricing were pretty transparent, i.e. the price breakdown was shared with us after consultation but before prescription is written/charged 3. Wonderful vet - our vet has been Dr. O'Callaghan. We have been very very impressed by her handling of our dog/people reactive GSD. Dr. O'Callaghan made our GSD as ease even during the very first visit. Dr. O'Callaghan is very knowledgable and she explained her plan of action thoroughly. She followed up on lab results and next day visit issues even on her day off. 4. Filed insurance claim for us - I am grateful that SD filed insurance claim for me. Although, during the process, there were some miscommunication and confusion, SD's staff worked with us to resolve them. So far, we haven't need SD's help on major procedures (knock on wood that we won't need them ever), but for the services we have received, we are happy with SD. read more

I cannot say enough about how wonderful small door gramercy has been. My cat has seen both Dr. Venezia and Dr. O'Callaghan, both of whom are empathetic, kind, and SMART clinicians. I appreciate the thorough explanation of the rationale for testing/procedures to make you feel comfortable from both a care and financial standpoint. The techs and receptionists also go above and beyond. My cat is not cooperative at the vet, but they are beyond understanding and prepared for anything. read more

I have to say, I was skeptical about paying the membership (to this day I think it it's pretty weird) but I ended up doing it since I live close by. I have to say, it has been one of the best vet experiences. When I got there they immediately asked how I was and if I needed any refreshments. It turned me off that they kept pointing out how early I was (I'm sorry for being responsible lol). At exactly my appointment time the vet came out and introduced himself. They brought me to the exam room and after they are done they recommened what your pet needs but I LOVED i was never pressured into anything. I have had that experience before and it is very uncomfortable. They took very good care of my cat. You are paying for great service which you get and you don't get pressured by an owner on doing a million things for your pet. I really enjoyed it and glad I gave them a chance. read more

I've tried several area vets over the past 3 years, and this is the first time I feel really happy with my choice. Each other vet had some good things and some bad, but SD has been all around wonderful so far. We have seen Dr. Carr for an all around wellness visit, anxiety issues, and once when my pup got quite sick. She was thorough with each visit, listened to all my concerns, asked lots of questions, and inspired confidence that I hadn't found with others in the area. Didn't feel like she tried to upsell me anything, and didn't feel like she ever rushed us. Yes, the membership fee is a bit odd, but with the first visit included, it really isn't any more expensive than some of the others around. So thankful I made the switch, as I feel my dog is getting his best care so far. read more

i was walking by with my dog on a hot august day and decided to pop in to ask about nexgard. they told me they couldnt sell it to me without an appointment first which i understand. but when i asked if i could have some water for my dog the receptionist told me that they were out. i was a little confused at this reply and asked if they had a sink. eventually she went and got a bowl of water while asking if i wanted to schedule an appointment- which gave me the impression that they were unwilling to give my thirsty dog water unless there to be some kind of compensation for them. the experience was extremely off putting- which i told the receptionist before leaving. If i need to walk you through how to get a thirsty dog water on a hot day, what makes you think i would trust you to handle any care for my pet beyond that? read more

I could not recommend Small Door enough! We had a pretty scary medical emergency, and the team at Small Door helped us throughout with expertise, warmth, and reassurance. A few highlights: - We could only get a 2pm appointment, but, given the urgency, we came early, and they cut their lunch hour short to see us immediately - Our dog was feeling quite skittish, and they invested the time to try and warm him up to them (getting on the floor with him, slowly giving him pets, etc.) - Gave us lots of information about what could be going, diagnostic options, treatment options - The front desk was so welcoming, offered drinks while we waited, and even gave our dog a towel for a pillow to let him feel more comfortable - Finally, not that this is the most important thing, but the facilities were beautiful, and that at least helped me as the human be in a better state of mind! Had an amazing visit here! Good pricing and nice range of appointment times aside, all the staff were so friendly to both me and my cat. The vet Joey and his assistant Luca were so professional and gentle with my cat, even when he started to put up a fight. They took my concerns as a new owner seriously, were honest about what they'd recommend, and didn't immediately try to upsell me to something more expensive. The atmosphere is also very welcoming and cat friendly. No harsh-smelling cleaners or cold metal tables. They took things to the ground where my cat was comfortable and gave him some time to settle in a bit. I think my boy is in really good hands here! read more

I can't say enough good things about Small Door! We brought our new puppy to Small Door and from the second we walked in the door, the team was warm and knowledgeable. I learned SO much during my first consultation as a new puppy parent. Also, if you have a puppy, the weekly socialization groups are a great way to give your pup play time before they have all of their shots. Another great aspect is the 24 hour texting support from the medical team. Whenever I have a question about our puppy, I message the team and they always get back to me quickly. One star rating for this particular office. Took my cat for yearly exam, blood, urine, etc. Horrible blood work procedure. The tech was unable to take her blood for more than 20 mins. I finally asked that she be taken off the table. They did, however, the vet in charge never even came over to ease my concern. He simply ignored. Bad business! I can't say enough great things about this veterinary office. I'm a first time puppy owner and the office staff has been accommodating and helpful. I love that I can text them and ask them questions and they take all my questions and concerns seriously. My puppy adores the staff and whenever we walk past the office, he wants to go in to visit. They have so many perks, like puppy play dates and the ability to buy prescription foods (my dog gets GI issues regularly because he will eat anything off the floor). They send discharge instructions and review everything that happened at any specific visit. They also check in to make sure that any issue my dog had resolved (like when i was concerned about lethargy and vomiting after he got the rabies and Lyme's vaccine.) The prices are reasonable, the staff and care eases my mind completely and the location is prime. I'm so glad my dog is in their care! read more

We love small door and the gramercy location is great. They are able to take you in within a day or two so your pet gets the attention they need when they need, not a week later. They also don't overcharge like a lot of other veterinary clinics across NYC. Great place to bring your pet. With so many options it was overwhelming for us to pick a vet as new puppy parents. We walked around and went to a few places in our neighborhood and this place beat everyone out bar none! They took such great care of our little Walter and we're so friendly!
