LOVE the people at VEG! From the receptionist to the doctors. Both of our cats have been treated there and they got the best care. They also have an open door policy. You can visit your pet any hour of the day or night. They even offered to set up a cot if we wanted to stay overnight.

AMAZING PLACE! I had to take my dog in the middle of the night. I was so worried & they were incredibly helpful & informative. They gave me different options for treatment. I couldn't ask for more in an emergency

I'm a human doctor, for what it's worth, and this was one of the best healthcare operations I've ever seen. Dr. Cha and Theresa were exceptional. I was in an exam room with my cat Bernard within 30 seconds of walking through the front door. There was complete transparency in thought process and potential costs. Considering this was around midnight on Memorial Day, having this level of talent available to your pet is a true luxury, and it wasn't appreciably more expensive than an average annual checkup with labs. Theresa showed great skill in phlebotomy and subcutaneous hydration--Bernard barely noticed the needles. My only regret is that I wish I could bring my cat to see Dr. Cha and Theresa for non-emergent visits. This urgent care gets my highest recommendation.

    The x-ray!

My cat swallowed a needle and thread. It was horrifying but VEG were absolutely amazing! They got us in quickly and immediately did an xray ( wild to see a sewing needle in a cat's throat on an xray!) they sedated my sweet cat and were able to remove the needle! I was so impressed with the entire staff. Kitty is as good as new thanks to the epic care at VEG in Chelsea. We felt completely taken care of!

This is, without a doubt, the best vet/hospital/emergency care Place & staff I have EVER dealt with. I came here the morning after my parents dog had jumped 5 stories (70 feet) from their building during a thunderstorm. They immediately got into action. While some of the doctors prepared for treatment, another one shared that this was quite a common situation & quickly gave tips on how to avoid it in the future. I found it smart of them, as well as comforting. Informative, nonjudgmental care. They were unbelievably KIND throughout it. They let me stand next to my dog and pet him etc etc the entire time, except for when they brought him into this X Ray (I think) room, at which point they offered for me to look through the window (lol). They also could not have been sweeter -- seriously -- with my dog. They all knew his name and were familiar w his condition, from the check in staff to every vet/nurse/etc. working in the hospital. Keeping in mind that budget was a factor, they were flexible and offered multiple routes of care -- from top of the line treatment at multiple hospitals via ambulatory care, to a multi day stay with them, to finally bringing him home and intensely monitoring his symptoms & doing his treatment. I had spent 18 hours at VEG already (they never made me feel like I was in their way or anything), so I decided to bring him to my apartment. The reason I undoubtedly think VEG is the best in the world is that, after I had brought Hemmy home, I called the hospital many times to ask for their advice/insight about his progress or treatment plan. Every single person on the phone remembered him!! And they were familiar with what had happened, what his injuries were, etc.!! This includes doctors who were not even there on the day he came in. This also was seriously up to 8 WEEKS after! They were SO helpful. It was unimaginable. I asked them things like how to lift him up while bringing him up & down the stairs, what level of heart rate necessitates him coming back in again, if it was okay that he was entirely out of his environment (he came back to mine, rather than my parents, which was a completely new home for him. It is now a year later and it's HIS apartment, lol). I can't remember everything. But it was absolutely astonishing and beyond impressive how helpful, accommodating, and caring they were after Hemmy was no longer in their care. They were so beyond amazing despite only meeting us for one day -- eons better than every vet I've ever been to. I cannot thank them enough, ever. If they ever open a non-urgent care clinic, I would switch over to them in a heartbeat. They saved my dogs life, and were pillars of support throughout his healing journey. I love VEG and appreciate them with all my heart!!!

Dr Casey is the most patient human on earth, I must've asked him 5000 questions and he never made me feel stupid or annoying like how I've been treated before. Everybody there is super warm from the receptionists to the ppl working in the hospital side. I watched as many other animals were treated with care and love (especially the ones who had been admitted and their owners weren't there, nearly cried watching a Dr petting a cat with an e collar). You could tell that everybody here really loves animals. They even have a really cute golden doggy assistant. We were seen right away, I was given an estimate before anything was done, and the exam, bloodwork, and two kinds of medication came to 500 bucks which really is not bad in the world of Emergency Vets. 3 years ago today I dropped 1500 at blue pearl and was treated like an idiot for insisting that my dogs seizures weren't epilepsy but brain tumors (yes it was tumors, RIP Fancy) When you call them you get to speak to a doctor or nurse who will evaluate if you actually need to go in. The nurse I spoke to was awesome and assured me that my dog was not on deaths door but my anxiety from losing my last dog this time three years ago made me go in anyway. I'm so glad I did. Also this place is clean and really beautiful. They have a water and coffee station, the seating is cozy, and they even gave my dog a blanket and a bed to hang out on I can't say enough about this place, thank you so much for taking care of Blanche (and my anxiety). My regular…read morevet did a sonogram and found fluid on her lungs, and suggested I take her to VERG for a echocardiogram. When I arrived at VERG they quickly triaged her, took her into the clinic immediately, and put her on oxygen. After a thorough exam, Dr. Karen Li sat down with me to go over the options. At that point my cat's breathing was very labored and she had an enlarged heart. Dr. Li didn't feel the echocardiogram was necessary because all Maggie's symptoms pointed in one direction. Dr. Li carefully explained her condition and the pros and cons of our limited options. The first option we discussed might have extended her life by a few weeks, but it would have required a lot of medication and potentially a painful procedure to drain fluid, and Maggie would not be comfortable. The other option was euthanasia to give her a comfortable and compassionate end. Dr. Li supported my decision to end her life to avoid any further suffering. Dr. Li was with me through the procedure and was amazingly kind and compassionate. I was able to hold Maggie the whole time so she could feel my love. Dr. Li gave me all the time I wanted with my cat both before and after; I never felt rushed to either make a decision or have the procedure. It was a very difficult day but Dr. Li and everyone else at VERG - from the admissions desk, to the triage nurse, to the grief counselor - were exceeding professional, kind and caring. I felt that both my cat and I got the best possible service in this scenario and felt very cared for. VERG didn't suggest any additional tests or procedures, although they could have. I appreciated that. It was a heartbreaking day but Dr. Li and the entire VERG staff made it as comfortable as possible. Based on my experience I recommend and would trust VERG in an emergency situation to do the right thing and take care of a beloved pet.

TLDR: Be wary about using VERG for oncology, especially if your animal's cancer is advanced and or…read moreyou are now doing palliative / hospice care. I took my dog into the Gowanus location on May 30th, to see oncology sooner than our previously scheduled appointment on June 6th. He was diagnosed with Lymphoma in February, and we had already attempted CHOP and MOPP with him, with not a lot of success. Upon advice of his current oncologist's office, finances, and his quality of life - we moved to palliative care with L-Spar shots to keep down swelling in lymph nodes around his chest, throat, and jaw, along with continued use of the steroid prednisone. His current oncologist and vet are out of state, but we live nearby and I wanted to see if it would be better to switch to a local oncologist given his current state. He started showing additional concerning symptoms over the past week - coughing / hacking, dark stools, trouble defecating, a bit more lethargy than previously seen. I told all of this to the person we did intake with before speaking with Dr.Cohen - the oncologist at VERG (I do not remember her name but she was very very nice and attentive.) However - my conversation with Dr.Cohen was extremely disappointing and I realize in hindsight how little information and support we received during this visit. In addition to wanting his symptoms to be examined, I picked VERG because their website said they support palliative care. Dr.Cohen acted very dismissively throughout the entire visit. I am more than aware that no one can tell me how much time my dog has left. I brought him in because in addition to needing the relief of an L-Spar shot for some of his lymphoma symptoms he also was experiencing GI concerns that needed more investigation and treatment. When I asked about the possibly bloody stool, she said that the lymphoma would possibly affect that and could lead to rectal collapse, and that was something to look for, and that they would do a rectal exam because they forgot to do that prior to coming and speaking with me. I have no idea if they looked at why there was blood in his stool and if there was anything we should do, such as antibiotics or medications he should take in addition to the steroids. I ended up scheduling an appointment with a different vet on Monday evening that did a through exam and prescribed probitiocs, an antacid and a GI protecterant. That vet stated there was a chance my dog may need to be hospitalized, and yet at VERG no one said or did anything about his GI issues. During the appointment I also told them that I had one week left of my prednisone prescription, and there was no conversation about if I needed medications or getting more prescribed that day. (Thankfully, I already have a prescription coming from a delivery service.) The attitude I picked up on throughout this visit was that while there was stuff we could do it didn't seem worth it given how advanced his cancer is - which is not the attitude I am assuming they want staff to show with a client. That may not be how she personally felt, or the message she wanted to send but that is how I felt. It felt like I was being treated as an overdramatic pet parent, rather than a very loving and scared pet parent simply trying to manage her dog's cancer the best she can to give him as many good days left as possible. I would like to point out that all the other staff I interacted with that day were very professional and kind and should be praised for their handling of my dog and case I was charged 292 for a consult in which the doctor did not answer a single question I had. When I asked about whether we should do an L-Spar shot that day, she simply said they could if that is what I wanted to do. I have no veterinary medicine training. I have tried to understand everything related to my dog's condition and health, but it is a lot, and I often feel like I don't know what I am doing. Treating cancer is extremely expensive and I understand the costs that go into administering the rescue shot. However, I do not feel as though I actually received any support or information during the consult, such as coming up with an adequate supportive care plan or explanation / treatment for his additional symptoms I brought him in for. All I was told is that we could do the shot that day and bring him in a week later for another check. I finally left three hours later not knowing whether I was actually considered an oncology client at this hospital or not. I have requested records, a refund for the consult fee, and a followup from the medical director. I have received nothing besides a response stating that my email with my concerns would be forwarded to admin.

As a pet owner, hearing that when there was still hope and treatment available is absolutely heartbreaking and unacceptable. Thankfully, my friend trusted her instincts and chose to move forward with the surgery anyway. Today, Rusty is alive, healthy, happy, and running around like nothing ever happened. I cannot understand why euthanasia would be pushed so quickly when the issue was treatable and the owner was willing to proceed with care. Pet owners deserve honesty, compassion, and every reasonable option explained to them before being told to say goodbye to a beloved family member.

This place, and the caring people in it, made a very difficult day more bearable…read more I came in knowing that I was going to have to put my almost sixteen year old cat down, and as we pet parents know, Sidney was more than a cat to me - he was family. He got me through some REALLY tough times over the past ten years, and honestly I'm not sure how I would have gotten through the pandemic without him. So knowing his time with me was coming to a close, I left it in his hands to tell me when it was time to go. And, unfortunately, that was the day he woke up and his eyes said simply, "Enough." The staff was attentive and kind from the jump. An examination revealed the options, but it was obvious that whatever was happening was quite serious - and I was given a breakdown of potential next steps. Of course with Sid's age, putting him down was also an option, and I already knew this is what we were going with. I did not receive any pressure to run any preliminary tests, procedures, or additional costs. I was simply told what the options were, and provided with an honest opinion of what the outcomes could be. And all options sucked. BUT it was obvious that the people helping me genuinely cared, and it made the heartbreak just a tiny bit easier. I had never had to do this before and I came in with Sid alone, so the vet guided me through what we were doing, what was next, and gave me ample time in between to say goodbye. Again, no real way to make these things less painful, but there was something in the attention and care I was receiving that made me feel like I wasn't going through it alone. The staff was going through it with me. I also received a beautiful card in the mail from them afterwards, hand-signed with a personal message from each - and this small gesture brought such warmth to my heart that I felt I had to share it. Highly recommend this place.

I was met with kindness and respect from literally every person working last night including the security guard at the front door. I wish I had gotten everyone's name. I was able to check in online during my Uber ride to hospital and was immediately taken back to the ER. I was brought tissues and a cup of water as Benji's vitals were taken and was quickly assured his vitals were normal. Dr. Cale Toews examined Benji thoroughly and gave me several options for treatment plans and the differing costs of each plan. I did not feel rushed or persuaded towards one plan over another and he made it clear I could ask as many questions as I needed to feel comfortable. Thank you so much Dr. Toews, you were so kind and reassuring. Other thank yous: thank you so much to the woman who greeted Benji, brought me water, and settled me in the ER; thank you so much to the vet tech that administered Benji's fluids and antibiotics; thank you to the tech that took his vitals immediately and reassured me he was stable. PS: I'm surprised at the one star reviews here but recognize that being in an emergency situation with your pet is extremely difficult. While I was there last night a true emergency came in with a cat that didn't make it. The owner was rightfully distressed and defensive and the VEG team took great care in de-escalating while focusing on how to make the cat as comfortable as possible. I was very impressed.
