Whenever I'm in the mood for cupcakes, I always end up at Smallcakes. Their cupcakes are consistently delicious, the frosting is AMAZING, and the staff is always so kind and attentive. In fact, the last time I was there, the sweet young lady behind the counter complimented my style, which honestly made this 40-something feel pretty good about herself. Such a small gesture, but it genuinely made my day. I tried to snap a picture of all the cupcakes we got, but the kids devoured theirs before I had the chance. I'm not sure what the chocolate cupcake with the pretzel on top is called, but it is hands-down my absolute favorite. My husband loves the Wedding Cake and Lemon Drop cupcakes. But if you ask Marley and Mary Jane for their opinion... it's definitely two paws up. These two go absolutely crazy anytime they see a Smallcakes box come into the house because they know I brought them a little pup treat too. A pretty solid cupcake place. Wanted to try a different place for my birthday so I gave it a go. I picked up from the Elmhurst location which is the closest to me. It's a small shop located in a plaza. It's pretty bare on the inside. I was immediately greeted upon entry and the lady who checked me out was really nice. She showed me my order before I accepted it. Presentation looked great! They had most of their flavors on display as well as other miscellaneous products like dog cupcakes, decor, etc. The quality of the cupcakes were fresh and hefty. Small cakes in elmhurst I ordered 1 dozen cup cakes from the elmhurst location which is 39 dollars plus tax. The cup cakes were smaller than I remember and were the same size as your standard cup cake you'd find at any grocery store. The cupcakes were not what I expected for a place that specializes in cup cakes. They looked great, and the flavor was ok. I was a little disappointed in the lack selection as it was pretty standard affair. Most of them are built on chocolate or vanilla cake and any additional flavor is coming from the frosting. I will say tho I feel they were a little expensive without much in the way to make them stand out from other options. The location looked clean, and the staff were friendly. The store itself is very sparse and for a bakery I would expect more items if even display only to be present. The location is a little difficult to get to, but that's no fault of theirs. That's just a heads up incase you intend to check it out. The order online has a very low character limit for specifying quantities and types of cup cake you want. I would recommend skipping the website and just place your order by phone. Stopped at the Lake Forest oasis after a long day of traveling. Small Cakes had a little pop up going on so we grabbed a few cupcakes. The peppermint was incredible! Strap in kids for a tale filled with cupcake delight and customer service horror. A true story of a man's journey to have a sweet treat. It all started as I walked in to Smallcakes after spending a stupid amount of money at the chicken place. This took place on a Friday evening. As we entered, there were 2 other patrons in the establishment. I later suspected they were friends of the cashier based off of the conversation I had over heard and the fact that they didn't buy anything. It was at this very moment our cashier in this story could have provided a 5 star experience, but instead created a 2 star review. As I stood there with my group, looking for recognition in the form of a greeting (of some sort) I was disappointed to only receive an emotionless gaze from her. I chose to break the uncomfortable moment by asking if I could order with her. She responded in the affirmative and I proceeded to overindulge and ordered a dozen cupcakes. This moment was less than ordinary and lacked any traditional communication. It was only after I paid, things went from "meh whatever" to "bleh.. this place sucks" I submit an illustration for this tale of 12 Cupcakes. Or is it 13 Cupcakes? You be the judge. The sign stated $38 - Dozen+1. I'll admit I'm terrible at math, but I got this one. My basic algebra skills kicked in and I determined the following, a dozen is 12. If I add 1 that's 13. The sign states for $38 bucks I can get 13 cupcakes.. BUT our cashier in this story had only given me 12 sugary cakes! Alas, what shall our hero do? I returned to the cashier to claim my 13th cupcake! And so I did. I approached the cashier and explained my concern. I was told, "I'm not giving you a free cupcake." In the same drab and expressionless way that our conversation had started earlier. I explained I'm not asking for a free cupcake, I would like what I paid for. She stated a dozen is already discounted and she again told me she isn't giving me a free cupcake. I was bothered by her word selection because I'm not trying to hustle a cupcake, I just want what I perceived to have paid for. Nonetheless, I replied "ok fine, but can you explain to me how else a customer is supposed to interpret that sign?" Note for the review readers, I'm a pretty rationale person and if $38 for a dozen plus 1 means anything other than $38 for 13 I'm open minded enough to accept that. I just wanted her to clarify what it meant. She said "we'll I don't know what that means". I'll end the review here. My opinion is that customer service is a dying art and this is a prime example. Even when faced with seemingly irrefutable evidence that the customer was correct, she couldn't see the customer's perspective and made a bad situation worse. Mic drop I'm done. Not goin back. I don't like leaving a crappy review when it comes to cupcakes. I mean, cupcakes should always be soothing, make up for anything wrong in our days, and make us feel all warm & fuzzy inside. Those extra calories need to count for something. The thing is, I've been a Smallcakes fan for awhile, but after trying them here at least 4x's now (precovid too), I'm just not a fan of this location or their cupcakes. Naperville is better. When the store first opened, the cupcakes fell apart on me. It was a crumbly mess. Gave them time to figure out kinks, came back and while one cupcake tasted ok, the other was meh. Some time ago I picked up a Fat Elvis and Boston Cream and a few more as a gift. After tasting them, I was embarrassed I ever gifted them. The flavor of the Fat Elvis was so artificial I couldn't get over it. And the peanut butter type frosting was equally as artificial and didn't help. The Boston cream was always a safe choice in the past and my favorite, but this time the batter tasted off. Kindof dry and completely fell apart ...again. Recently, they didn't hit the spot. At all. And sat in my fridge for days.. Didn't have a good experience with the Cashier either. Not welcoming and when I asked for a bag was told they don't give bags unless you order a huge box. I really needed a bag so after mentioning more than once she finally handed me one the size of a pillow case..well, at least I had a bag.... It hurts my heart that the experience I had yesterday at small cakes in Elmhurst was horrible!!! The cupcakes I bought for my wife were not fresh! I was shocked! We've never had a problem with Small Cakes in other cities. My surprise for my wife was ruined by dry old cupcakes. My wife called to speak to a manager today. She was told to send an email. I'll be honest, I didn't think they were the greatest. Didn't give me a taste that I would come back for. The 4 star rating is for their presentation. The place itself is very cute and decorated nicely. Cupcakes are presented very nicely as well. I just got spoiled with Molly's Cupcakes, which are the best tasting cupcakes around, in my opinion. I have also become a cupcake snob since I use my favorite cupcake shop in Chicago as a the standard, I have yet to find cupcakes that even come close to that establishment! I will say that Smallcakes was good and I would totally go back! The spot is super cute and the owner is very friendly and was patient with us as we drooled looking at the cupcakes and were being indecisive in regards to what to get. My husband and I got the seasonal pumpkin, Boston Creme, Chocoholic, and the peanut butter cup. All the cupcakes were very good...they were moist and tasty. The cream is a bit sweet, but that is just my opinion. My favorite cupcake by far, and one that I crave, is the peanut butter cup. SOOOOO yummy!!!! I have been a long time customer of Smallcakes. This was, however, my first visit to this location and I will never, ever return. The cupcakes were stale and the frosting was hard. They obviously were not freshly baked today as I picked them up today around 11am which is just about an hour after they opened. I purchased half a dozen, all of different flavors for a small birthday dinner tonight and everyone complained that they were horrible. The young lady was very friendly as was her husband so when she told me there's a storefront in Elmhurst, I thought, I need to try them out. I've had a few of their cupcakes and I even had them make a batch of mini-cupcakes for my moms birthday instead of cake this past January. Everyone enjoyed them especially since everyone is watching their carb intake in our homes. They also have a frequent buyer punch card. I think I'm due for my free cupcake soon. My friend brought in their cupcakes to work. They were decorated beautifully and they have so many different flavors. The cupcakes are gigantic. The cake was so soft and airy that it did not feel heavy or overwhelming. I never really love the cake portion of most cupcakes but small cakes has it dead on perfect! The frosting wasn't too heavy or light and there was a nice portion on the cupcake. I liked the flavor but It has a particular sweetness to it that it isn't my favorite cupcake frosting. I chose the Birthday Cake cupcake on vanilla cake. I loved the nonpareil sprinkles on the frosting. I really wasn't expecting much. I was thinking 'Yea, I could make myself a vanilla cupcake easily.' They were all great, but if I were to get them again, this is the order I would choose: Lemon - (awesome lemon flavor) Key Lime - (very good) Red Velvet - (it's hard to get a moist red velvet cake but this was excellent) Boston Cream Pie - (frosting was too thick and not enough custard) The store is in a crappy location, but the store itself was clean and a had a nice seating area. I've never been to a smallcakes bakery before. I've heard a lot about them and finally had the opportunity to try them out! Upon entering I was greeted by a nice woman. Explained I've never tried their cupcakes and she filled me in on the bakery. Honestly, this place is clean and super modern looking, the woman was kind. They offered a pretty standard selection of flavors. She explained they do different flavors so not all flavors will always be available. So since nothing seemed new and exciting, I tried a 4 pack of some typical flavors. Nothing adventurous. Sprinkles, chocolate frosting vanilla cake, vanilla frosting chocolate cake, and a super chocolatey one. They also had lemon, peanut butter, Carmel pretzel, red velvet. I must stress the location was fine, the store itself was nice, the employee was nice. So why 3 stars? The cupcakes didn't live up to the hype I guess. I was expecting some neat creative flavors but they honestly had just the classic ones you could find at pretty much any bakery. They were larger, but my children didn't like that the frosting kept falling over while they tried eating it. The cake was okay. The frosting didn't appeal to anyone. My husband said it honestly just tastes like a typical cupcake. Similar to the "artisan" ones I could pick up at the local Jewel. My kids didn't want to finish their cupcakes. And I kind of feel like I wasted my money. I have a horrible sweet tooth and didn't particularly feel the need to finish my cupcake either. Kind of a let down.
