Like many of you reading, I'm a busy mom just trying to make my daughter's birthday party happen. While multitasking, I quickly googled "Smallcakes" to place an order at my local bakery for the next day's party and tapped the phone icon, then placed my order. I went to pick it up next day on my way to the event and they did not have my order. My stomach dropped when I realized there is more than one Smallcakes and that I had actually ordered in Wichita and I live in the Chicago suburbs 10 hours away!! My local Smallcakes saved me... they quickly made up an order for me and had me out of there in 10 minutes. I was stressed to pay $50+ again after already pre-paying $50+ over the phone the day before but they reassured me it should not be a problem, that when this has happened to them, they simply sell the cakes the next day (it was a weekend day.) When I called Smallcakes Wichita and explained the problem, they just kept repeating that my order is ready for pick up (even when I reiterated I live 10 hours away.) I asked if they would consider a refund and sell the mini cupcakes they had made for me (I just chose a package of their most popular flavors so I'm certain they were re-sellable.) Long story short, both my husband and I called multiple times without return phone calls and when I finally connected with someone live, she refused to make any compromise with me or offer any type of refund. I made an honest mistake, and I really think they could have sold those cupcakes or at least provided a partial refund and just charged me their cost (since they had the product available to them to consume, sell or donate.) When you walk in the store there are four cozy seats that you could sit in and enjoy a cupcake and drink, maybe read a book. I arrived about 40 minutes before closing time, so there wasn't a wide variety of cupcakes left. I must say that I expected more out of the cupcakes than I received. The base for the Snickers, Chocolate Sundae, and Chocolate Coconut was a simple chocolate cupcake. There was nothing surprising in the mix to make them stand out. The only difference was the actual icing and toppings. They were very rich so one cupcake could actually be split in half with someone. The only thing I wish I could change was making the cupcakes less expensive lol but there pretty decent size and but a smaken loadddd of frosting on top which I love I legit eat the cupcake and save just a lil to eat with all the frosting... ik weird but your guaranteed i believe a super moist and good cupcake. Their not terrible dense but I also dont find too light either. Some have filling which makes it even 10x better I recommend the chocolate peanut butter, lemon, or their original vanilla with pink frosting. It was 2009, and the country was in the throes of a cupcake revolution. Jeff Martin opened the first Smallcakes in Overland Park and soon became TV famous from stints on the Food Network show Cupcake Wars. Four years later, Smallcakes is franchised across the country, and say what you want about Wichita, but we are definitely a part of the country, so we got one, too. It seems like the franchising is pretty loosely controlled, so each Smallcakes looks different and offers some seasonal flavors that go beyond the dozen "signature flavors" that Smallcakes posts on their site. I tried a Kit Kat Cupcake, mostly because it was fun to say. The concept was more fun than the execution - a chocolate cake topped with chocolate buttercream, a chocolate syrup drizzle, and some pieces of Kit Kat to remind you what they were going for. The cupcakes are made fresh each morning, but the cake portion was almost too light - it stuck to the wrapper, and it didn't stand up very well to the heavy frosting. It was also hard to stretch my mouth to the size necessary to take a bite of the thing - they may be called "Smallcakes," but they are certainly larger than your average cupcake. Technical challenges aside, the freshness and the creativity are the selling points for Wichita's first - and probably only - cupcakery. Small cakes is more like the perfect size of desert for one. The best flavor is lemon. Their cupcakes are filled with lots of frosting so every bite is perfect with some frosting at the top. The store is on 21st and rock! And behind the store is their cupcake truck, you can always fine the truck out and about when they do truck at the Fountain downtown about once a month when the weather is nicer out. Defiantly visit their store over the food truck because there is always a larger selection there. The staff is nice and courteous so you can always expect to receive the best service there.
