Location and Parking Small cakes is located at the intersection of Briarcliff and North Druid Hills. It's in a shopping center with Newk's and a T-Mobile store. Parking is free. Venue and Atmosphere The interior is friendly with pink walls and a list of "permanent" flavors on your left. On the right side wall is the daily menu, which has rotating flavors. Luckily today they had decadent vanilla which is one of my favorites. Food and Beverages I typically get red velvet, decadent vanilla, cookies and creme, and birthday cake. The cupcakes are always perfectly moist, and the icing isn't too heavy. I actually don't like icing (from any brand) so I scrape most of it off anyway. If you like coffee then FYI: they advertise that they have coffee but it really just comes from a Keurig machine. Sometimes with parking you have to wait until someone comes out and circle a few times because there's Newks, Willy's, and a few other really good food options. Appearance: It's the cutest store. Got these one day. Had different flavors. The chocolate and vanilla is delicious. The Sundea one isn't my favorite. The rest of them are pretty good including the snickers one. I didn't like in the next day after putting them in the refrigerator but the day I got them the cake was moist and icing isn't too overbearing which I really enjoy about cupcakes. The prices are decent. I haven't tried everything here and I'm gonna try more cupcakes but I'm actually a fan. I think if you eat them the same day you get them they're probably a lot better than saving them. If you do want to save them for the next day keep them outside for 24 hours I think it'll be fine because I think putting them in the refrigerator and makes them drier. Smallcakes Cupcakery has absolutely incredible cupcakes, and you should go grab one this instant if you've never tried these cupcakes. Seriously, head on over! The cakes themselves are spongy, and I love the various flavors of icing. We are frequent visitors to Smallcakes. And by frequent, I mean the friendly staff have asked US to talk about our favorites to other new customers because we have been deemed cupcake experts. You can get a punch card with a punch per visit, and after your 6th visit, you get a free cupcake. My absolute favorite is Wedding Cake, which is only available on Wednesdays. It has an almond extract flavor, and it is divine! My plea is that they make that flavor every day. Pleeeeaaaase! I also like the Birthday Cake and the Pink Vanilla because I'm a big "white on white" cake fan. My sweetie is the chocolate lover. He loves the Caramel Crunch (which you can order with white or chocolate cake...he goes for chocolate), and it has a caramel icing with sea salt and a pretzel on top. He also likes Chocolate Cream, which has a fudge icing and cream filling. I'm not even a fan of chocolate cake, and I truly love the Chocolate Cream. Smallcakes does special flavors each month, and you can get on their email list to see what the flavors will be for the month. Recent favorites have been Strawberry and a maple pecan one that was someone else's special order that I got to enjoy. I'm not a huge fan of the carrot cake (seasonal flavor) or the red velvet (daily flavor), but I can't fault them because so many of their flavors rock. They also make great chocolate chip cookies (cookies are little too crumbly but great buttery flavor) with icing in the middle. You can also pick up mini-cupcake assortments, and they do a great job of having festive elements for all the holidays. Just recently they started carrying ice cream, which I have yet to try, but this can please multiple dessert lovers at once. We lucked up on parking spot at the end of the row next to Newks which means we had to walk past ALL the things to get to Willy's. I had never been to one, but Smallcakes caught my eye, we go in. The cupcakes are beautiful. I got a dozen of various cupcakes. I tried the snickers cupcake, which is a chocolate cupcake topped with caramel buttercream and some snickers crumbs. The cupcake itself was moist but the frosting was very sweet. They are packaged nicely. However, they are relatively simple cupcakes and nothing about them really stand out. They are priced about $3.50 each with a discount if you buy them by the dozen. They also have medium (by special order) and mini cupcakes (prepackaged by the dozen). I was told that about 3 mini cupcakes approximates one of their regular cupcakes. You get a 10% discount with a CHOA, CDC, or Emory ID. I called and the woman I talked to on the phone was really nice and helpful. The woman that helped me when I came in, however, was curt and really unfriendly. She seemed impatient and I felt like I was bothering her even though I was the only person in the whole store. If I based this review on customer service in the store alone, I would not go back. Luckily, my initial impression was formed from the conversation I had the day before. Overall, these are pretty cupcakes that are nicely packaged so they are great for parties or get togethers. This is a cute little bakery with lots of gourmet cupcake options. I came in for a dozen assorted cupcakes for a friend's birthday and the presentation was attractive. I was also able to purchase a candle while I was there which saved me another trip to the store. I'm not a huge fan of sweets and I only sampled 2-3 of them, but I was impressed with the moistness of the cake itself. I found the frosting to be a bit too sweet for my liking but if you are a "normal" cupcake eater, you should be fine. The person who worked at the store was very kind and helpful. My friends and I saw this place on our way to Sublime Doughnuts. After seeing all of the accolades this place has received from Food Network and the likes, we decided to pop in and get a few cupcakes to go. We got the Lotus Cookie, Birthday Cake, and Chocolate Cream. Out of all of them, the Chocolate Cream was the best (even though it didn't have as much cream filling as we were expecting). The Birthday Cake was essentially a vanilla cupcake with frosting and a lot of sprinkles and the only thing that made the Lotus Cookie cupcake special was the half piece of Lotus Cookie that was stuck in the frosting. Other than that, it tasted like a regular cupcake. Overall, it was an average cupcake place and I'm confused by how it has received praise from so many big names. Picked up a cupcake for my teen on the way to a belated extended family birthday celebration. Stopped by Smallcakes to get a red velvet cupcake, but they all looked so good that I decided to get an assorted dozen. The young lady who helped me was really nice and patient. There were more chocolate cake based cupcakes than vanilla, so she helped me create a balance in the dozen, as well an interesting and inviting mix. My teen loved the red velvet cuocake and the chocolate filled cupcake with chocolate icing (you can tell he likes chocolate and icing). The family liked the cupcakes for the most part. The most common feedback I got was, "pretty and the cake was alright, but too much icing or too sweet." To me, this is a preference issue. I don't like a lot of icing either and felt the same way when I tried the sundae-like cupcake. However, if icing piled high is your thing, you'll be super happy. Also, the fam has incredible bakers in our network, so you gotta come correct. Probably the thing I would try from Smallcakes are the cake in a jar (especially if its lemon or key lime) and their mini-cupcakes, which are super cute and just the right size for the calorie conscious. It's beyond convenient and we always great and patient service. My first time there I had no ideas the flavors or what I wanted but the lady walked me through each flavor, recommended her favorites, and it was a lovely experience and I left with a ton of great cakes to try at home.
