While enjoying a store next door, I kept thinking about trying the Smallcakes. It seemed yummy. When I entered Smallcakes, I was immediately greeted by a sweet staff member. They were eager to answer my questions and help me out. I ordered a cupcake variety pack with lemon, chocolate and more. Then, I had to get some delightful treat for my fur babies. I tried the chocolate cupcake. Oh. My. Goodness! It was so moist and fluffy. The icing was perfect taste and texture. Well, my dogs inhaled those pup cakes so fast. Great place for delicious, huge cupcakes! I didn't realize this was a chain until after leaving, I would've never known because they were so good! The place is decorated so cute! I tried the cookies and cream cupcake and the peanut butter cupcake. Both were amazing, but the peanut butter one was definitely my favorite. It had the cream cheese and peanut butter icing, so good! Both were very fresh and moist. You can choose between a large cupcake ($3.50) or a mini ($1.50). I came about 40 minutes until closing, and there were only two cupcake flavors on display. However, the worker said that they had more in the back. Because this was my first time coming, I would have liked to seen what all the cupcakes looked like before choosing. Good cupcakes. This is a nice little shop that offers large cupcakes for about $3.50 each. I tried the Peanut Butter cupcake and the Cookies and Cream cupcake. They were both really good. Each of them was fairly moist and the icing/flavoring were delicious. My personal favorite was the Peanut Butter cupcake, but you couldn't go wrong with either one (especially if you have a craving). Overall, the cupcakes were good and I would suggest trying them out. They aren't the best cupcakes I've ever had, but they definitely cure any craving you may have. read more

A little while back I had won a small cakes gift card of $30. When I went to use the gift card they said it wouldn't go through because of the taper residue left behind. The cashier helped us wash it and clean it but it still wouldn't go through. After washing it throughly we returned we went back to try again but they told us they didn't accept that specific card and only accepted it in Georgia. I asked if they could just give me the money from the gift card and they said it was a transaction problem and couldn't. So I left with a red velvet cupcake and it was very very sweet. Adorable cupcake shop! I love trying cupcakes wherever I travel and enjoyed my friend bringing me to this shop while we were visiting Tallahassee last month. These cupcakes are HUGE! The quality of ingredients is evident with each bite. I was particularly impressed with the chocolate cake. I am an amateur baker and struggle with chocolate cake consistency, and this shop had perfectly fluffy chocolate cupcakes. We purchased a box with a half dozen cupcakes, and between four adults (and bites given to two young children), we had wiped out the box within a couple hours. read more

Mine was vanilla with some pink buttercream frosting (I'm boring; there were lots of more exotic cupcakes). It was without a doubt the very best cupcake I have ever had. I was so disgusted with myself because I sat there and just licked the wonderful frosting off of it - it was THAT good. It was late in the day and the cupcake was very fresh and the selection was good. But... besides that - the inside of the place (see my photos). It is delightful. There's no other word. Delightful. I've seen this place driving by and it was recently my birthday so I said hey why not stop in. When I first opened the door sweet smells instantly hit my nose! I purchased 4 cupcakes: Oreo, Keylime, Chocolate with vanilla icing, and a Bearclaw. I thought 3.50 per cupcake was a little high to not be familiar with this place (3-3.25 would have been ideal) but I would be interested to know the weight of the cupcakes and if they are cooked fresh daily or and how many days they allow them to sit and refridgrate if any. Needless to say I ate every last bite over like 3 days. I really liked the taste. Honestly I thought the cupcakes were even better a day later after I had them in the fridge, it was like the taste was stronger. Being from the DC area I've tried all the over hyped cupcake places. My wife and I went in earlier today to buy some cupcakes. We were excited because we had heard good things about the shop. We ended up buying 6 cupcakes. When we were checking out I asked for a couple empty individual boxes since we wanted to give a couple to our neighbors. Unfortunately, the cashier told us that we could only get a box if we bought a cupcake. I didn't want to argue so I let it go, but my wife and I thought that her response was quite petty and curt. We just spent $18 at your shop and you couldn't spare a couple individual boxes? Maybe the cashier was new, but the encounter rubbed us the wrong way and will make us think twice about going back. My wife had a strong craving for some cake so we decided to give this place a try. The place smells amazing as soon as you walk in, it's very neatly decorated and looks very clean as well. There was maybe about 12-14 flavors to choose from and they all looked pretty amazing. Cupcakes are all huge with a ton of frosting, but they do have mini cupcakes as well. We tried 3 different cupcakes and they were all super fluffy and flavorful, the frosting was great on all of them as well. Not the best cupcakes I've ever had, but still definitely worth the visit. While I'm regularly a fan of local establishments, Small Cakes really beats out the other places in town. Lucy and Leo's gets a lot of press, but the consistency and flavors leave something to be desired. Only Tasty Pastry is on par in town. The cake is always moist, the frosting is not overly heavy, and the flavors are always great. Tequila sunrise and lemon are two of my favorites, but red velvet is their most popular flavor. Tried them for the first time tonight. We bought 3 cupcakes and each tried a third of each cupcake. I have to say I expected them to be much more flavorful, and taste like their names suggested they would. The peanut butter cup one was probably the worst, you could only taste the cream cheese but no peanut butter. The others were a chocolate base and their icing were flavorful- yet really expected them to match the name of the cake. I'm an aspiring baker so I tend to be critical of others. Especially commercial or chain places like this one. I was brought some as a surprise and was excited to indulge. To my disappoint i was let down. The cake itself wasn't too bad, no real complaints there, and the size would please any ones eyes. My true letdown was the icing. Granted it was piled on and looked fantabulous it wasn't. it ruined it all for me. It frosting was way too sweet and grainy. I'm still confused how the frosting was grainy. This place happened to catch my eye while driving through Tallahassee on my way to grab some Chipotle. Its small and hidden if your not from this area but I'm glad I ended up going in. The shop itself was adorable I love the atmosphere and environment! The cupcakes were huge, fluffy, and so moist a it does have a lot of frosting but surprisingly it wasn't overwhelming like some other cupcakes! It was rich but smooth not like that artificial sugar frosting. My top 2 favorite was the butter pecan and birthday vanilla cupcake :) I was glad to find out that they were a chain and had some locations in Texas so I'll definitely be visiting those when I get back home hope they are just as good this location. read more

I didn't see a location available for the Thomasville, Georgia location on Yelp so I am writing it on the Tallahassee page. When I first encountered Smallcakes in nearby Thomasville, Georgia, I was amazed and enjoyed the cupcakes. However, the last time I was at the Thomasville location two weeks ago, there were flies on the cupcakes. Very disgusting. Run from this business as the quality appears to be going down hill fast. The location in Tallahasee is always clean and fresh. The atmosphere is great with the manager and employees always greeting with a smile. I wish the Thomasville location mirrored that of the Tallahassee one. Kudos to the manager. Unfortunately, because of the decline in cleanliness of the Thomasville location, I cannot recommend any of the Smallcakes locations in the area and will purchase cupcakes from another local business. read more

I'll admit that the little pink boxes are adorable, but each time that I've gone in (three times now), the cupcakes and the service have been just "okay." The best cupcake that I have tried is the Red Velvet, but the chocolate and strawberry were dry, and the icing was not good. The icing tasted hard and far too sweet. Plus, at $3.50 per cupcake, they're relatively small in size; you're better off going to Whole Foods and getting a bigger cupcake at a lower price (I believe they are $2.99). The service here is also variable; sometimes there are several people working at the counter, and sometimes I stand there for a few minutes before someone approaches from the back and greets me/stares at me until I order. Tallahassee is short on cupcake bakeries, and the location of this store is prime. I think that the recipes and service can be improved and this cupcakery will easily continue to be successful. read more

This small cupcake place is a chain cupcake store located in the strip mall next the pet supermarket (around best buy and chipotle). When you walk up the place they have their specials on a small chalkboard outside. Once you get inside you get to see the extremely cute interior decor (see pics). Its very girly and pink. Its perfect place to take your daughter and her friends. I absolutely love whoever did the interior design. When I heard from a friend who lives has one of these stores nearby where she lives and said that it was good I had to try it. Okay and the fact that it was on Cupcake Wars and that USA today listed it as one of the top ten cupcake places to try in the country. Maybe because I had high expectations I was slightly let down when I tried the vanilla birthday cake cupcake. It was really nothing special. Yes, it was a moist cupcake with a sweet buttercream frosting but I can do that at home. If a place can't do something better than what I can do at home, I don't get impressed. It was just a correctly cooked vanilla cupcake with classic buttercream frosting and sprinkles. Thats not hard to achieve in my opinion and experience. Then I wondered if it was because the cupcake I picked to try was not chocolate (usually chocolate desserts of anything tastes better right?). Since my hubby was eating the chocolate cupcake I asked him how it was. His response was "nothing special, especially for a $3 something cupcake". I took a bite and agreed. Okay if this was just a Tallahassee cupcake place I probably would review easier because well...Tallahassee isn't exactly a foodie city with high expectations of their food (lets be real here). But because this place is a chain and from a cupcake war winner and the fame and good reviews its had.....it just dosent live up to the hype in my opinion. The most awesome bakery. Bigger and better tasting cupcakes than Lucy & Leo in addition to better hours and definitely better customer service and variety than the Cake Shop. Amazingly flavored variety. Some are everyday and some daily specials. The Canoli & Key Lime are my favorite and many of the others I had were great to though I'm no fan of the red velvet and chocolate ones, but I'm not really big on those anyway. They are so soft and moist and maintain their freshness. Nice establishment with friendly staff that will give you all the ingredients of the cupcakes on display.
