Take a Walgreen's, your local grocery store, and one of those Everything $0.99 stores, smoosh them together, and then enlarge the inventory so that a giant could buy enough of what s/he needs to make dinner. If you need a place to buy cheap food, this is it. I just moved here and was taken aback by the price of groceries here. A big shop at Safeway would cost me between $200-$300. At Smart and Final things are cheaper. They are either slightly cheaper or WAY cheaper. The place is basically like a bulk grocery store but you can also get single items. They don't have everything there and the produce section is not that huge but I feel you could the majority of your weekly grocery shopping here. I'm a huge salsa fan and was tired of spending 5 dollars for a small jar that would last me one day. Well at Smart and Final you can get a huge container of it for 3 bucks!!!! So if you wanna save some cash and get more buck for your money go here. read more

This is the second most ghetto grocery store next to Stater Bros., but chances are you're never going to go to Stater Bros., so for all intents and purposes, this place is pretty ghetto. This place has a lot of incompetent employees (probably stemming from poor management) and there never seems to be any rhyme nor reason behind the lines in the front of the store, usually only two or the registers are opened no matter how busy the place is! As inconceivable as it is, it can get rather busy! it always enrages me when I see people skip the line here and get away with it, usually just shrugging their shoulders and blaming it on the lack of order/logic. Sometimes I find good deals in the flier which gets distributed in my area but most of the good but the quality of most of the products here are lacking and only good if you own a small business and want to restock it with substandard merchandise. One time I was in line when one of the cashiers told me to put the Line Closed sign in the back. Yes, he demanded it! Rude service, charged for bags, substandard merchandise, and run like a zoo complete with the monkeys in the lines. Would have a more pleasant shopping experience amongst the bonobos at the San Francisco Zoo. read more

Great service, once in a while they even give me my bags for free. These bags will last a nuclear holocaust so I like em. Good selection and not too big. Smart and Final is best used for bulk cleaning supplies, industrial danishes and large cans of pineapple chunks - should you need to stock up for said nuclear holocaust. read more

Really rude manager. Most grocery stores will have employees casually yelling things to other co-workers, which is somewhat understandable if they're unable to leave from one check stand to another or need to get a message through to someone. It's a different story though when the manager is clearly upset about something and expresses every bit of their frustration in front of customers. I came to this place twice yesterday and both times the same manager was yelling at employees as he was assisting customers with their groceries. Not impressive. I come here to shop not feel like I'm in the middle of a war zone. read more

What a weird place.... I can't articulate what makes it so odd.. but the best I can do is to describe it as a weird blend of Costco/a modern supermarket in a rural village in China/and a third world flea market....no selection of produce.. no fresh orange juice...lots of weird processed..uh..everything.....yet tons of mass packaged paper and plastic goods....no grocery bags at checkout, but overly large boxes that don't fit in your trunk are on "first come, first serve basis"...like I said....a weird place.. maybe the awful lighting starts your experience off in a bad direction..... read more

There are bargains to be had but usually not worth the time and effort. Couple of ads in yesterday's Examiner, problem is they don't have the merchandise in stock and don't believe in rain checks. Very difficult to get anyone to assist. Place could be cleaner. Checking out is always fun, one checker with a long line and employees just standing around. Gave me a register receipt with info where I can respond to a survey. Filled the thing out and couldn't submit because the site is not up to receive. Tried a site shown on the receipt which doesn't exist at all. Called Corporate Customer Service, you can leave a message and hold your breath. read more

I shop here often usually without incident but I'm leaving here today feeling really put off by the complete lack of compassion and sensitivity at this store by the cashier who acted like he may have been the manager and the other staff who acted on his behalf to loudly remove a homeless and mentally ill woman who lives in this neighborhood (my neighborhood, I see her often). The woman was stealing food (a pie) to eat and the cashier just started yelling loudly "throw her out, throw her out, just throw her out" over and over and then as she was pushed out the door still holding and trying to eat the pie he told the staff to knock the pie out of her hands. After she was out the door leaving her shoes behind the staff threw her shoes out with excitement stating "she isn't going to wear them anyway". SHAME on you smart and final staff! You could have handled this with some humanity!! And certainly without all the yelling and disposing of a persons shoes who will most likely be without shelter tonight in the cold of SF. This place rocks! When I was in search for a tasty mayo, I found it here. I didn't want the regular ones that don't really taste good. I recommend getting the Chef's Review one with egg yolk. So damn good on sandwiches. I warn you that there is not small sizes so that sucked. Its like a mini Costco that may cost a little more. read more

Glad that this store is near my work. I get my coffee grounds, bread, yogurt, fruit juice, tea, chocolates and etc etc. I even ran into a colleague ion the parking lot who has never shopped here before until I brought her in the store. She lives in Russian Hill side of the city and comes here to go grocery shopping. Unfortunately, there is no nearby Smart & Final nearby where I live. read more

Have since tried several of their beef cuts (haven't done chicken or pork) and have found the quality not very good (but I don't like Safeway's beef either), a little too tough. I buy paper products here--paper plates and bowls and cups for outdoor gathers and (extended) family feeds. I once found a big sealed bag of shredded brussels sprouts and wish they'd carry that more often. I do get other shredded salads, green onions en masse too because the quality is just better then Safeways or Andronicos. S&F has it's place, but it's not for everyday grocery shopping unless you have to always feed a fraternity or something like that. read more

Good, convenient place to get some staples (cereal, milk, etc) for cheaper than you would pay at a store like Safeway. Not much of a selection of anything, so really only for basics, unless you're just not picky about much. If you must buy produce here be very careful, often not much seems fresh. Very small store, but there is a parking lot so you can at least avoid having to search for street parking. The cashiers always make it obvious that they hate their job. The people that stock the shelves are pretty friendly though. Bring your own bags or you'll have to pay a bag fee. But if you buy anything here, buy one of their large canvas bags, I take it to every grocery store and it's amazing, fits everything and is very sturdy. read more

I've seen rats in this store, which is absolutely disgusting and shouldn't be acceptable whatsoever. I have also seen an employee colluding with a customer and falsifying food stamps by entering it in the machine manually. I saw the customer calling for his friend/partner in crime who happens to be working there and the friend rings him up while somehow manually overriding the cash register and falsely entering the transaction as an EBT transaction, to both the other cashiers and my dismay...as I waited for at least five minutes looking at this. How do the supervisors allow this??? the guy clearly didn't have food stamps yet his friend falsely entered it in. read more

Smart and finals is great for most name brand items, and then some. Products from beer, soda, bottlled water, paper plates,napkins, condiments, I recommend purchasing from Smart and Final. My recommenedation is purchasing only name brand items. Smart and final, has generic frozen foods, ice creams. Stay away. Your trading quality for quanity. I guarantee, that ice cream tub will end up in the trash. Last, be very selective with meat, and produce items. I purchased meat items, produce fruit and vegetables. Ive gotten wilted lettuce, mooshy watermelons, and rotten potatoes. Again, dirt cheap vegetables and fruit are a sign of a bad quality products. read more

It is really nice having a smart and final near my apartment, but this isn't the best-stocked one I have ever been too, especially in produce and baked goods. Their selection of everything else is good, however. Make sure you bring your own bag, or else be charged 10 cents. read more

Good prices. I've not experienced really big problems with long lines. An OK place, but be advised, if you call them up and ask them if they carry canning and pickling salt, and they say "Yes!", you would be well-advised to not believe them. read more

Finally a place where the customer is not always right. Signs of prices are not always accurate placed and it is easy to grab the wrong item. I am always careful, but still mistakes happen. Today, after I paid, I noticed that I was charged incorrectly for one item. I was still standing next to the cashier, so I told him it was supposed to be a lower price. He looked at my receipt and said, "Nope. That's the price." "But that isn't the price that is labeled in front of the product. I don't want it.", I told him. Of course, today is the one time there are two long lines. "If you want a refund, get back in line." I was speechless. Obviously, the cashiers here don't get customer service training. This isn't the first time the cashiers here were rude to me. The last time, I asked the cashier to take something off before I paid. She claimed she did, but when I later showed her the receipt that she didn't, she didn't even apologize. Instead, she made me fill out a refund slip as if it was my fault I needed a refund. They carry a few items other stores don't have, and they have some good prices on some items. However, they do not value customers here. Be careful not to burden the workers here and no not disrupt their work. Pay attention when you are being rung up and don't pay until you are satisfied that everything is correct. I liked a few items here, but not enough to come back. I don't expect them to be as nice as Safeway, but I do expect a little common courtesy. read more

The store is great for buying things in bulk, but I dread going in every time I need something. I have never seen more than two check stands open at a time, the cashiers are pretty slow, and there is always a really long line down the aisle. I don't understand why more check stands aren't open when the store is busy. read more

This location has had a major remodel a few years back and I now shop here pretty regularly for some of the items i need. Clearly many other clients are doing the same and now the long lines are pretty much a sure thing every time i go there. While i am really glad they are so busy i am disappointed about the company inability to address the problem. They do have all of their cash registers open pretty much at all times (Thank you!) but the lines seems to move very very slowly compared to other grocery stores lines. One thing I notice is the cashiers also bag/box the client's groceries while in other stores there is a bagger every 3 or 4 cashiers. I do not know rules and regulations and budget the manager has to follow but I wonder if they could even try for a while to use 3 cashiers and use the 4th cashier as a bagger to see if they can do faster transactions that way. I also think pretty much all of the cashiers are meeting to the very minimum some of the basics in matter of customer service but often they seems more preoccupied in talking and joking amongst themselves than connecting with the clients. I will certainly keep going there for the convenience of the parking and the good prices, I just wish the lines would move faster. read more

Best thing to happen to the Richmond District. I love the 6 pound cans of tomatoes, fruit, beans, artichokes, etc. When i open them, after using what I immediately need, I simply transfer the contents to plastic containers, and into the fridge. Staff is friendly and cooperative. People who complain about the service in this store may have their own problems . . read more
