Needed to use the bathroom here while doing some shopping and everyone here are just so damn rude. Trying to get a bathroom code is like trying to get a secret pass code to the president's office. I'm a paying customer who is properly dressed, not some hobo down the street. Everyone that works here seem to hate their job. Terrible place to shop and horrible customer service. One Asian employee (possibly Filipino) who stocks processed meat near the bathroom area is especially rude. I asked him for the bathroom code and he completely ignored me. Three times I asked him and he pretended like he didn't hear me. No, he wasn't wearing any AirPods. I never step foot in here - even when I food shop on Clement. However I went in in sheer desperation yesterday. The kids' school is having a food drive and each grade had to bring a certain type of food (mashed potatoes, fruit cocktail, peaches etc.). I tried Costco and they no longer carry industrial sized fruits of all kinds. They only had mandarin oranges or pineapple. Safeway and Target wanted $1+ for a small can. So when I was in Clement, I dropped in here to try my luck. They had the industrial sized can of peaches here! For the bargain basement price of $5 too! Store is a bit dark but organized. Shopping here for volunteer work since 2010. Few times/week for my kids' school's hot lunch program run by parents. Do my personal shopping here now too. INVENTORY: Meats, dairy, breads and pastries, fruits and veggies are fresh & other perishables and goods plentiful. Both regular and bulk sizes, with pretty good variety to boot. Frequent replenishing, judging by the constant unloading of ubiquitous delivery trucks. PRICES: Competitive with Costco. This inner Richmond district location is more convenient for my school & home than Costco in SoMa, so I save on time, gas--and ultimately $$. SERVICE: Management is meticulously attentive to the cleanliness and presentation of all areas of the store. e.g. frequently disinfecting the register counters if they get wet/dirty, keeping floor free of debris, maintaining restrooms, cleaning even the inconspicuous areas of the refrigerated sections, etc. Always found the staff efficient, professional and friendly--at check-out, in the aisles, or when specifically requesting assistance. SHORT(ER) WAIT TIMES: I usually hit the store between 8 ~ 9 am, when the lines, if any, go quickly. Usually avoid the late mornings and afternoons when it can get crowdy. However, the cashiers usually call in for more registers to open when the lines grow, and try to take shoppers in the order they were already in. SPECIALS: Definitely check out their weekly flyer for specials & deals. Always found it amusing, in a Animal Planet kind of way, when they used to have their 99cents/dozen egg sales. When (mostly elderly) folks from the entire Bay Area would descend en masse to make multiple purchases. Multiples times. Oy. DO-GOODERS: Lastly, I can attest to the generosity of this S&F to the community. Numerous times, the manager--without solicitation from me--offered to donate food and other items, which have greatly benefited my kids' hot lunch program, the homeless family shelter our school sponsors, and the Boy Scouts of America. Seniors are allowed to shop only a half hour before the store opens for the general public. After two recent unpleasant chaotic shopping experiences at Safeway & Trader Joe's, this Monday I decided to check-out Smart & Final and arrived at the store maybe 15 minutes early. A few seniors were already waiting in a line near the entrance. There was ample space between each person standing in line and we were all carded: DMV ID or Sr. Clipper card. I was impressed with how well that senior line was handled by store personnel. Another worker was posted close to the "exit" door. (No one could sneak in that way.) With my shopping list, I found most everything I needed and in 17 minutes had completed shopping - was back at my car. The workers were helpful, courteous, and efficient as usual. read more

Sure he didn't know that when he made that joke since my mother is African American. But his tone also changed with my mother once he found out she would be paying with EBT. He was has a nasty argumentative attitude. And so did Angelica. They are rude and working in customer service you would think their attitude would be positive and uplifting. Dan is a racist against Asians and economically discriminated against my mother for paying with EBT. It's no reason why you should talk down to customers. Or make offensive jokes. You are not better then anyone because she paying with EBT. Just like I'm not better then Dan and I'm 23 and positive I make way more money then he does. I totally enjoyed visit this location. Clean and well stocked and in order the way I would describe. It wasn't anything they don't have. They have higher selection of desserts and treats and more. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The store offers good prices including a variety of fruits, eggs, vegetables, seafood and meats. They are taking special care sanitizing the carts and baskets. Great prices and product and customers / staff are nice and helpful. They acted quickly and effectively once the city was shut-down. I dock three stars because one checker--most likely just trying to be friendly or relatable--began pushing a popular conspiracy theory, how he thinks the Coronavirus was a biological weapon; which is preposterous. The scientific community is in broad consensus that the virus was made in the wild[1][2][3]. This is a great place for groceries and supplies. Though, my day really started off on the wrong foot hearing an earful of conspiracy theory. We need less misinformation in our diet and we shouldn't have to worry about getting sick with it at the local Smart & Final. Perhaps management can make a policy which restricts employees from pushing politics/conspiracy theories on customers as they check out. I wanted to post a Yelp review about the Smart & Final on 350 7th Avenue. Specifically about the store manager Hernaldi. Remember the PG&E scheduled power outage that happened recently? Well I am person dealing with a disability and a whole lot of chronic pain. With the threats of the eminent power outage looming, the loss of power would've put me in a bad way since I require ice packs to keep my body temperature down. Power outage = lots of pain for me. A friend called around to local stores on the day of the power cut off and found that ice bags were disappearing fast. She found some at the Smart & Final on 7th Ave and went down to purchase them for me to use. My friend spoke with the store manager Hernaldi and asked if he would be so kind as to set the ice aside for me so that I could arrange for someone to go pick up the ice bags later on that day, or even the next day. Hernaldi agreed. Who does that? An outstanding Store Manager, that's who. I just simply had to post a Yelp review to declare my sincere thank you to the store manager. You don't see that kindness often these days. And especially not during a time of black out energy crisis. A time when things can just get plain weird on the city streets. Many people were in the dark in areas surrounding San Francisco, yet Hernaldi from the Smart & Final protected these bags of ice for me in a shopping cart in the store freezer until my neighbor was able to get down there and pick up some bags since I have mobility issues. I'm not sure if he was even allowed to do that. I really hope I don't get you in trouble Hernaldi. But I feel compelled to just say thank you! We made it through the scheduled power outage. Wouldn't you know, our power did go out the very next day though. We still had ice bags to get us through. Whew! This is a bit of odd grocery store as it is somewhere between a Costco and a run of mill chain grocery store. Sometimes they have decent prices on bulk products but the store size limits their product range. Staff is helpful and will help you locate stuff. They have a decent sized parking in the front as big plus IMO as it can get pretty hard to find a spot sometimes in this area. Other than that I am not sure what market they are trying to cater too. read more

I have been here a few times - it's walking distance to my place. Even with that I'm not sure why I'd shop here. There is a selection of certain types of processed foods that I don't see elsewhere, so if you are missing some of those brands from the 90's or so I guess this is where you can find them. When I look at per-ounce prices, there is generally less value than Safeway when buying water/sparkling water. The produce doesn't seem as fresh or as cheap as other local options. Household items are noticeably more expensive than on Amazon. I guess the main reason to come here more generally is if you need something today, live around here so don't want to trek out to a Costco for better quality/value & can't wait for lower prices on Amazon household goods and have decided to avoid the local Safeway, want better prices than Walgreens, are scared of the local Asian markets and know that going to Trader Joe's at the wrong time is traffic hell. Since the now social spacing, I've grown proud of how this store is handling it. Tensions are high but the staff have been managing beautifully. Of course another challenge is maintaining enough stock due to customers buying in a more exuberant quantity due to the panic. It's now everywhere. The wait is not excessively long to get in but hey this is the new normal. Must adapt to survive otherwise u may lose ur mind. Four stars for the store, but a big fifth for the employees. S&F is a niche market. It's not middle-of-the-road like Safeway, not a luxury market like Whole Foods, not ghetto like Foods Co, and not quantity-over-quality like Costco. It's not everything to everyone, but they *are* likely to have things that you can't find elsewhere, or that you can find elsewhere, but for a lot less. I go in every few weeks to get the things they stock that I can't find anywhere else, like flats (24 cans) of certain beverages, boxes of certain snack bars, and so on, that other stores only sell individually or in smaller quantities. So, for that, they're the only game in town. But what really sets them aside is the staff. How many stores (beyond the premium ones like WF) have staff who, once you actually manage to find one, will barely help you? That's certainly been my experience at Safeway and other mid-to-low-end markets. Not at this S&F! Everyone I've dealt with has been helpful to a fault. For example, I just called to ask for a stock check on my favorite caffeinated sports drink (Rockstar Recovery). The person on the other end of the phone cheerfully offered to go check, and without my asking, brought a flat back with them and offered to put it behind one of the registers, for my convenience. So I recently wrote a bad review about Lucky (formerly Albertsons) and how pissed off I was at them for raising the price of canned pumpkin by 30%. And here is where the beauty of Yelp comes in - one very helpful Yelper wrote to tell me that Smart and Final has HUGE cans of pumpkin and it's cheap. Thanks Lainie - you rock! So I ventured over to this place in the Richmond and had a look. I'm a convert - when it comes to canned pumpkin. A giant can for $7 - AWESOME! And they have the giant boxes of oatmeal that Costco has, but they don't have the little old Asian ladies stopped at the end of the aisle chatting each other up and blocking the aisles that Costco has. And before you call me racist, go to the Costco on 10th Street on a Saturday afternoon and tell me who you see blocking the aisles with their carts and conversation. BUT a bunch of stuff here is expired and/or stale. I bought pickles here - they were nasty and got me sick. And I bought a small pack of peanut M&Ms last week when I was in the check out line. STALE. So shop here. But be careful what you buy. I wonder if you can get away with illegally using this parking lot when nothing else is available on Clement - anyone know? P.S. Smart & Final (aka "Dumb & Pending") is one of those crazy places that are so wild you have to go back one more time to make sure you weren't imagining it. If you are planning to entertain at all, you owe it to yourself to stop in. Get this: Parking, right outside the door! In the Inner Richmond. That alone makes me want to sing loud praise. But then step inside. It has odd lighting. It is a bizarre mix of industrial cleaning supplies, large packages of candy, chips, coffeemate, etc. And an enormous frozen food section with everything you need to throw a party. This is where to go for all those mixers, the olives, the little onions, the cherries, the limes, the cups, the napkins, the plates. They sell catering supplies of all sorts. Plus everyday grocery type things like tortillas, soup, etc. Prices are competitive with Trader Joes or Costco, and often there are sales, which give you true bargains. I bought a big box of Planter's Peanut Bars. They are next to impossible to find at regular candy counters, but I love to store them in my desk for snacks, or in the glove box of my car for when I'm starving but don't want to stop for anything. (They don't melt). I also bought a big box of Grapenuts cereal for about $3, about half what I usually pay at Safeway. I scored a box of cocoa mix packets too, perfect for these chilly days. What else? Cheese. Eggs. Beer. Dawn dish detergent. Tide. Paper towels. Potholders. Tongs. Serving spoons. They have it all! I was so tempted to buy a pinata, just because it was funny, but held off. They had everything I needed to make my hangover brainchild, the nacho bar, as well as cups, napkins, plates, mixers and all of the other things I needed to have a great party. They were also less crowded, quicker and closer. Minus one star for the following reasons; next to no shopping carts....I had to stalk someone in the parking lot to get one, no samples and hard to maneuver aisles (which, in fairness, may have been attributed to my hangover) . It's a sad reality that there is not a very large or prevalent Armenian community in the Bay Area. So when I try to explain to people the great mass of stored food I'm accustomed to they don't quite get it. Growing up we had a basement stockpiled with loads of food, including a full sized freezer for meats, pastries, cakes, frozen sauces and then some. There were 8 shelves 6 feet long each stacked with soups, chicken broth, rice, cereals, sauces, chips, sodas, seltzer water, alcohol, and any non perishable you can think of. This was the norm growing up. Ask any child of an Armenian household. It's what we do. So I like things in bulk. It's my heritage and my right. Hot Dogs in packs of 28? Awesome. Wonka Nerds in a 40 pack? Bring it. Frozen Waffles in packs of 20? Pasta by the pound? Atkins can bite me. A box of drumsticks as big as my head? Gloria in excelses deo. This place fits my needs. It makes me feel at home. It's nice having a place nearby that allows me to cater to my ancestral leanings with out needing some membership card and a penchant for warehouses. Definitely not "Smart" or "Final", as you WILL have to go back and argue with a manager about how they didn't charge you the correct amount. EVERY TIME. Bought over $100 of groceries and was on my way out when I was thinking, "Huh, I was expecting it to be closer to $80." Take a closer look at my receipt, and blamo! NONE of the on sale items were correctly marked, and I thought, hey, maybe they had a computer error. The employee and subsequent manager I talked to gave so much grief and attitude, I just became fed up and left. Spent almost 30 minutes AFTER buying my things literally going through the store and pointing, "See? That dog food says $19.99 on sale but you charge me $25.99, the before sale price" And guess what the manager and employee told me? We just don't care. You could have gotten these a week ago. Um, hello? The receipt has the date and time on it? Yes, so what, we don't care. NEVER shop here. EVER. Once again, since Cala Foods is no more in my neighborhood, this spot is a place I've recently begun to shop at for certain items. It sucks that I have to now spread my self out to approximately 5 friggin' stores to acquire everything I used to be able to get in one place (and 24 hours a day at that), but that's not the fault of this establishment. The good news is that I do find some serious bargains here. Where else can I get a really decent bottle of Shiraz for a mere $2.29? I picked up a box of 100 teabags for about 2.99, a big pack of fresh chicken thighs for around 4.50, and a big ol' bottle of my fave Crystal hotsauce for 2.19. For a guy on a tight budget like moi, being able to dig up these precious items for so cheap is a godsend. I also can get a pack of Trident chewing gum for .99 cents, when it's a buck 29 virtually everywhere else. Gotta keep my fangs fresh, and to do it inexpensively is a big plus. There's other bargains too, but the downside of this spot is that it sometime veers into Costco turf with stuff packaged in bulk containers, which doesn't work for me. And, they have one of those membership card thingys, which I hate having to fill out in order to get a few more cents shaved off of certain items. Inevitably, those things lead to junk mail and crap I simply don't want/need in my life. So, a star is deducted for that. I wish stores would drop that stuff. GEEZ. I was expecting it to only be around $5 or 6. Oh well. I got what I needed. Smart & Final reminds me of a wanna-be costco, but way smaller and the selection is a lot less slim. The usual things I purchase at a supermarket consists of: fruits, veggies, meat -- pretty much dinner supplies and whatever else that catches my eye with a SALE price tag. The fruits were definitely, if not the same, cheaper than that of Safeway. Everything else is pretty much the same, meat, poultry, etc. Overall, for certain limited products, it's better than Safeway, but if you can go out of your way, Food Co. or Costco is a cheaper choice. read more

The store usually offers good deals and the option of buying bulk, but customer service is so poor that I doubt I'll ever return. A while back, I had purchased something and then went across the street to buy something else, leaving my car in the lot. An elderly man (I am 90% sure he worked at Smart&Final) demanded that I prove I bought something, so I showed him my receipt. He muttered something and seemed disappointed. Sells brand name groceries in bulk, like Costco, but maybe only marginally pricier than Costco (if at all). I think this place is better because no membership card is needed. Only 1/3 to 1/2 of the things are sold in bulk. Everything thing else is reasonably priced or SUPER CHEAP. My recent purchases: --- 5 pounds of (super fresh) strawberries for $5.99!! --- A dozen eggs for 99 cents! --- 5 lbs of rice for $3! Other perks: --- There's none of the usual rude or shady characters that you see in other bargain-priced grocery stores. --- Clean, neatly organized aisles. --- Free parking lot Negatives (only marginally negative): --- Bring your own grocery bags. This place charges 6 cents per grocery bag, and they only have plastic bags. I love this Smart and Final. I've been coming for years. They have great prices, great produce, TONS OF PARKING, and I have never once found the place to be unbearably full of people. Their staff also seem to be genuinely helpful, decent people -- today's experience is why I am finally leaving a review after all these years. I showed up pretty much at opening time (6am) to stock up on the sale chicken breasts for a BBQ this weekend. I headed straight to the meat section and...oh no...the area where you usually find the "sale" chicken was completely empty. Shit. There happened to be a guy stocking the other side (ribs, etc) so I asked him where the chicken was. He explained to me that they were all out at the moment but they were expecting more to show up when the delivery truck arrives. He was even kind enough to go and find out when that might be (around 11am today). I expressed what a bummer it was as I had come primarily for the chicken, and he was kind enough to just come out and offer me a couple packages of the "regular" (not on sale) chicken breasts at the sale price. I thought this was really sort of above and beyond when it comes to the type of customer service you get pretty much anywhere these days. In retrospect, I think he may have been one of the managers. Back in marketing class, I learned KMart got whooped by Target and Wal-Mart because K-Mart didn't really have an identity. Wal-Mart plaid the super low cost shop, while Target played the higher class, more quality type of shop. I kind of feel the same way about Smart & Final. Smart and Final is some kind of weird wholesale quantity but non-wholesale/expensive prices hybrid. So even though some of the things you bought were in wholesale quantities, they weren't really wholesale prices. Also, they carry some never heard off brands, and the quality of the produce and "fresh foods" were off. I only made trips here because it was across the street from where I lived. Abort abort! About a year and half ago I strolled into Smart & Final and noticed these ridiculous signs printed in size 60 Arial at the cash registers that read something like "If you ask for a double-bag we're going to charge you 0.25 cents per bag." To me this seems like a total slap in the face to their customers and downright unnecessary. Even if they're getting taxed per bag, it's unlikely that their empire will crumble because of it and it tells me that they're more interested in money than providing a good shopping experience and customer service for their customers. I meant to write a Yelp review then, but never got around to it. I was recently in this store again and noticed that they're now charging 0.10 cents per bag. I watched in amazement as women and men refused to pay the fee and carried their groceries in their hands, as if cradling a baby. This exudes a lack of concern for their shoppers and I don't actually believe that a store that does this to their customers deserves customers. But they do provide significant savings on bulk items, they're conveniently located in the Richmond District and they have a large parking lot. So, my temporary solution is this: Refuse the bag, take the cart and leave the cart in the parking lot wherever you are, *unless* they pay you a 0.10 fee to put it back in the proper place. read more
