They guided me every step of the way, kept me updated, and were always responsive via text, which made everything feel so easy and stress-free. Very flexible for when I can come in too.I drove 90 minutes for fittings on two separate Saturdays, and it was absolutely worth it. By the third fitting, everything was perfect, I took it home and couldn't have been happier with the final result. Once I realized I needed alterations on my wedding dress, I knew to come here. Full disclosure, my mom used to work here decades ago before the current owner took over. However, I knew that the quality of work at the shop stayed the same. You can tell when the store is a local, high-quality institution if it's been around for so long! I brought my wedding dress in to get hemmed since it was a few inches too long in the front. Jenny saw right away what needed to be done and also helped me add in a bra insert to help my girls POP. She also saw that some of the lace needed to be tucked in to reduce the fabric from sticking out awkwardly by my arms. After the first fitting, Jenny saw there were still some more adjustments needed. I am appreciative of her expertise and her good eye for catching the small details that made a huge difference! This woman and her skills are amazing. I reached out again because I know that she saved the day from the last time I needed her help with my wedding dress. I went in for a fitting on a Monday and my dress was ready the following week, my dress fit perfectly; she is phenomenal. A little history, the company that I bought the dress from only had a 2XL. Although I have put on a little bit of weight since my wedding, I am still a size medium/large more so on the medium, I was swimming in the dress. But she always makes it work. After 35 years of business and numerous referrals I've given friends and family, I am done doing business with Jenny. I am not the customer that went for light alterations....I have given her thousands and thousands of dollars. The seamstresses have made from scratch countless gowns, dresses, jackets & bridal for me. My last experience, I was quoted $220 from Miss Annie, who has made dresses from me since 1990, long before Jenny took over business. When I went to pick up, she told me the price was $280. She inflated $40. I showed her a pic of sketch, and price and $100 cash I gave Annie when I dropped off, she insisted I pay her $280 which was more than initial handwritten quote. I refused to pay her jacked up new price. That was the end of our business relationship. Through the years, I put up with her inconsistent, price gauging prices because they get dresses done quick and well. This was the straw that broke the camels back. She even charged my DIL twice to make her veil because they didn't follow instructions and we were in a time crunch. Jenny, you are the loser. I have another HONEST seamstress now. Bye Felicia. I would not recommend for a wedding dress. My dress needed to be taken in...but instead of taking it in from the side or the back, she cut it down the front and center of the corset... so I picked up my brand new white dress with a new seam right in the center of my chest on the dress?! There is some draping and though the new seam was small, it was the wrong alteration for an expensive wedding dress. The sides of the draping also weren't stitched down symmetrical and were uneven - despite me being meticulous and sending photos of what it should look like. Owner also had attitude when I pointed these out or wanted adjustments. I don't know if she has a new seamstress who did the poor job but I was pretty heartbroken with the end result. I'm having to pay another seamstress to "fix it" with the extra material we removed from the bottom. She did give us a partial refund, but for the money I paid, I don't think the exchange was fair - especially now that I'm paying someone else to fix it. She may be good for small little adjustments but I felt the need to warn other brides about my experience. Bustle on the dress and over skirt looked good - so I'll give a star for that. read more

I want to give this place 5 stars, I really do. They work very hard on wedding dresses and listens to every concern. Usually there's multiple fittings to ensure the dress is perfect. I was hoping after coming into the store the third time the dress would be perfect, but it wasn't. There was a strange fold on my shoulder area which bothered me a lot. For the high amount of money I paid, I was hoping the tailor would be attentive and fix that before I came in. She suggested a third fitting to fix it which I declined as I was moving out of state and had no time to go back. The woman working here is super nice and sweet but I was just a little disappointed the dress wasn't perfect by the time I needed it by. On the bright side, she did very well making the dress fit like a glove. She added her own cups to my dress which was a game changer. So expensive. I dropped my dress off and paid $89 for the hem to be raised half an inch and the back straps to be removed. They didn't notify me when to collect it like they said and when I arrived to collect they couldn't find my dress. I had to go looking around their store to find it and when I did they said they needed to charge me more money for the straps to be removed, they hadn't charged me enough. The dress was so creased- I asked if they would steam it and they said it would be even more money. So disappointing. read more

This review has been a long time coming. Jenny helped alter my dress for my elopement in Santa Barbara back in March. I had just celebrated my wedding reception party this past weekend with friends and family. I was able to wear my dress twice! I bought this dress on reformation and absolutely loved it, I didn't realize how difficult of a dress it would be to alter because of how delicate the fabric was, but Jenny took her time and altered the dress multiple times to fit my liking and needs. I wanted to share some photos of what the dress looked like online, on my actual wedding day, and at my party. she was able to add a bustle and beautiful little buttons on the back of my dress so that the train wouldn't drag so much on the ground. I absolutely loved the look! Just to recap all the alterations Jenny was able to magically complete for me: Added bra cups, added buttons for my bustle, shortened the straps and brought in the seams on the side. I've always known their prices were on the higher side but I continued to go back because they are quick with the alterations. But this last time they messed up on my skirt. I asked them to hem it straight across neatly. When I got my skirt back it was in some sort of frills/curly design. (See photo). I expressed my frustration to the owner. But her resolution was a small discount when I shouldn't have been charged at all. I've spent so much money at this place and paid full price for everything. I had a very specific vision for my engagement photoshoot dress. I wanted something with a long train, form fitting and in burgundy. I couldn't find a dress that I could just buy and so I came in to smart dressmaking to see if they could make this dress happen. Boy, did they deliver! THEY MADE MY DRESS DREAMS COME TRUE! Thank you, Jenny and her amazing team at Smart Dressmaking for your incredible work! Jenny was very communicative right from the get go and throughout the entire process. We communicated over text to start. I showed her the dress that I wanted and she quoted me a price to think over. She was very kind and never made me feel pressured. A word of caution, however: a custom gown is not cheap. Think anywhere from $700-1000 depending on the style. It took around 6-8 weeks to make. I also had to buy my own material. Jenny will tell you how much fabric you need. I went to LA fashion district. At the intersection of Maple and 9th street, there are many stores with reasonable priced fabric ($4-16/ per yard depending on the type of fabric you want). I went to smart dressmaking with my fabric and ironed out the design with Jenny. We scheduled around 4-5 fittings to make sure that everything was exactly how I wanted. They were so patient with me and getting the vision that I wanted for the dress. I ended up wanting to make my train even longer. The price of course increased but Jenny told me that before I made my decision and bought additional fabric. Bottom line: Be clear about what you want and Jenny will be clear about the cost and whether it's worth it. Overall, I had a wonderful experience with Smart Dressmaking, Jenny and her team! My wedding dress arrived one month before my wedding day (10/14/23). I was turned down by two alteration shops due to the amount of work that needed to be done within a short time frame. A bride's worst nightmare. I was seriously in tears that day. However, when I entered this third shop, Jenny listened, comforted me, and accepted my dress with open arms knowing it was going to be a challenge. Third time's a charm..it's so true!! Jenny and her team were able to alter my dress within two weeks and scheduled fittings along the way. I loved it that I was able to see the progress. The seamstress added a bustle, hemmed the front (removed and added the lacing details back), sewed in the sides and sleeves, and sewed closed the lower back part of the corset since it was super low and looked weird. All that was done nicely and professionally and still kept the beauty of my original dress. Everyone loved it. I received lots of compliments. Til this day, I'm still in "aww" with my beautiful wedding dress and can't stop thinking about it. This review is on the horrible job that was done on my wedding dress from my first fitting on 8/7 to today's date 8/13. I'd really appreciate if Jenny, the owner, would respond to this message by emailing me back at vanvisa.musi@gmail.com. I'd like to be able to resolve this between the business and myself, and a full refund is the least the business could offer. I have called to respectfully and reasonably tell her how unhappy I was. She never took accountability for the mistake she did. I went in on 8/13 to show her the horrible job and ask for a full refund for the horrible tailoring that was done, but I was denied. While she did offer 50% refund, the work that I had to undo and go to another seamstress was too much because her seamstress ruined my dress. It took so much time, effort, and emotional distress to have a conversation. I saw her on 7/16 and my wedding is 8/30. My dress is a stretchy fabric with no zipper, it's flowy and bohemian style that would drape beautifully on my body - I thought I only needed little bits to take in so it fits a little nicer. She even said it fitted me very well the first time I went in, so I trusted in her expertise to deliver because she's supposed to be the expert here. Not only did she not take accountability, but she was gonna charge me extra $60 to put in zipper for the mistake she did by not realizing there was no zipper to my dress. I complained and said no, I asked for discount and she said no - I had to keep pressing for about how unhappy I was for her to say "ok no charge for zipper, happy?". She said her seamstress did the job, therefore her seamstress was careless and did a horrendous job. The list is long, so I am naming a few notable ones: - There's multiple lines of stitching inside that has a different color thread to the fabric. - She didn't realize my dress had no zipper, so it became too tight when I went back for my first fitting and they ended up putting in a zipper that was a different color to my dress and it was NOT invisible. The stitching was very poorly done. - My dress was very minimally dirty (I have pictures to prove that), and I picked it up with obvious stain from being stepped on while it was at her shop. - The bustle loops are white, not ivory, and they're all loosely done. - She left blue ink/pen mark spots on my dress. - She also overcharged me $595 instead of $590, and when I asked for refund she said "really it's only $5" . - She charge me for steaming but she never did that, and she knew I wanted to pick up the dress early because I was unhappy but never once did she offer to refund me for the service she didn't do. - She took out the tag of my dress and stitched it back in the worst way possible, it was stitched vertically and she stitched it back horizontally and it was clear they didn't try at all. While others may have had better experience with her, and I am happy for you, but I unfortunately did not and felt very taken advantage of. She did not explain in details what she was planning to do, she never gave me alternation ticket and I had to ask for it when I went in to complain. I only get married once, and this has been the worst experience to have your dress tailored in this manner. On top of wedding planning, this was the last thing I needed - she kept saying she needed time but she never asked me for time or walked me through what was done until I pressed her for refund and fully complained. I hope we can resolve this, and if not, I hope this review will help others be more mindful and careful of your decision. Be very thorough, and ask a lot of questions. read more

I live less than 5 minutes away from smart dressmaking so I decided to give it a try based off the glowing reviews. I purchased my wedding dress in Baton Rouge (my parents live there) and brought my dress here for alterations. Unfortunately I was incorrectly sized and my dress was huuuge (probably at least 3 sizes too big). I was super worried about alterations but everything turned out perfect!!! She was super meticulous and basically had to redo my entire dress D: She was able to make adjustments and finish everything in 3 different fittings and in less than a 2-month span. I was recommended here by a friend due to lower prices. However, I found something better! I really enjoy the relationship and care that Jenny offers. For my wedding, she was able to alter a size 10 wedding dress to a size 0 within a short amount of time. The alterations were flawless. The design of the dress and its look stayed. She kept the important pieces important, such as the sleeves of the dress and the front. My parents and some bridesmaids also altered their clothes here. My family has been altering our clothes here since. I really trust Jenny, and her communication is clear. She will tell you her professional input and honest opinions. If I could give more stars, I would! Jenny and her team are hands down miracle workers. I picked up my wedding dress in February for my April wedding and it was about 2-3 sizes too big (even tho the store measured me...). Jenny fixed the sizing, hemmed it perfectly with the intricate lace, added a bustle, added spaghetti straps, created and added removable off the shoulder straps, and added cups. She was so nice about all the changes I needed/wanted and communicated when I should come in for each fitting and what she was doing with the dress. She was even able to bring in the waist less than a week before the wedding and steamed my dress and veil. She also made me a mask since we didn't know what the restrictions would be like. My now husband picked up his suit Monday from the store before our Friday wedding and it was WAY too big. He was so defeated so I messaged Jenny late at night and she said to come in and we'll figure it out. She not only fixed the previous tailors mistakes but made my husband feel so confident and basically created a custom suit for him in less than 2 days! I can't thank her and her team enough for everything and for making our wedding outfits a dream come true.
