Nope. Staff is incapable of correctly dealing with insurance. Doctors change regularly. They never, ever managed to notify us when our order were in; we always had to call and inquire. We have moved on. read more

Just picked up my old frames with new progressive/photogrey lenses and paid $360.00 for the exact same lenses that Smart Eye Care wanted $600.00. You're crazy to do business with a firm that treats its clients that way! They don't even deserve a one star rating. read more

Went to get a copy of my prescription and they said they couldn't give it to me cause it expired (literally just a few weeks ago) but they said I could still use my expired prescription if I ordered my glasses through their company. I told them I couldn't afford it and then asked what the difference would be if I ordered them through their company or if I ordered them online through another company I could afford. They didn't have anything to say. They wouldn't even give me my prescription so I could order them somewhere else but they would give it to me if I ordered more expensive glasses through them. Make that make sense. Greedy. Absolutely greedy. Will not he going back. read more

I've been a patient at Smart Eye Care since I moved to the area in 2005, and though I miss Dr. Savage since he retired, Dr. Neron is great too. Everyone here has always been very kind and knowledgable here, from the receptionist, the doctors, and the techinicians that help you pick out glasses. When I wanted to try contacts, Dr. Savage was very patient with me, we tried four different lenses before I gave up (they just don't do well in my eyes), and I was never charged for a single pair. I've always purchased my glasses here as well since they take my insurance and it's one stop shopping, but they are more expensive than other places in the area. They're even open later on Tuesday nights to accomodate appointments for those of us that work Monday - Friday 8:00 - 5:00. I'm a happy patient here! read more

Went here for years and after Dr Savage retired got assigned to Dr Gladstone. Last appointment she scared me and told me I had to go to a retina specialist and she thought I had macular degeneration! We discuss the different doctors to go to and she completely gave me the wrong information and that I had to go to the one she recommended. Long story short I went to a new eye doctor and they have a special machines that take pictures of the back of your eyes and PS no macular degeneration! Definitely will not be going back here again. read more

I've gotten new glasses here twice in the past 8 years. The first visit I just got new glasses because I'd already had an eye exam elsewhere, and the quality of the glasses and prescription was fine. Not so for the second visit, in which I had their on-site optometrist do an exam before ordering 2 new pair of glasses - both of which I would call only 'adequate', if that. The optometrist kept insisting that I have my eyes dilated before the exam and I refused, since this place charges $60 just for a couple eye drops... and because I learned years ago from 2 optometrist associates of mine that eye dilation is mostly just to make the exam easier for the eye doctor and does not guarantee any better prescription fit than exams without it. Also, the couple of times I did have my eyes dilated in years past, the prescriptions I was given were not a good fit and I had to have them redone (elsewhere). I've worn glasses for 58 years and every exam I've had without eye dilation provided a perfect fit every time. I wear gradient tinted lenses because I am light sensitive, and the everyday pair I got in my second visit here was completely tinted because someone in the process assumed they were prescription sunglasses, so the lenses had to be completely redone. I paid a lot of money for the everyday pair and the reading pair on this second visit, and the cost, the arguing with the optometrist over eye dilation, and the problem with the new glasses were enough for me to decide against going back to this place a third time. read more

My family has been going to Smart Eyecare Center for the past three years. We really like Dr. Neron. She is kind and patient with our children and is very knowledgeable and takes the time to provide explanations. The staff has never pressured me into any optional screenings and have even helped me to decide when choosing lenses which upgrades are worth paying for in my situation. The staff also happily adjusts my glasses any time I've needed to pop by. I definitely recommend! read more

Bad customer service. Unhappy with the quality of my lenses and they were unable to come to a resolution. Will not go back.

I'm a graduate student who doesn't make a lot of money and doesn't have the best health insurance. I also have lupus and take the drug plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) to treat it. People taking this drug have to have yearly eye exams since it can cause vision problems. When going to get my latest eye exam, my wife and I both decided to give Smart Eyecare Center in Bangor a try. The whole time you are being seen they try to scare you into getting optional tests that cost a lot of money, this first happens when they do the glaucoma screening, they have another machine in there that they highly recommend because it scans your retina and saves the image so the doctor can monitor it over time. When I told the doctor that I take plaquenil she told me that I was going to have to have my eye's dilated and a visual field test preformed, she didn't suggest this, she came off as it being an absolute necessity. I asked how much it would cost and was told not to worry about it because they would bill my insurance since I have to have the exam because of my medical diagnosis. My insurance refused to pay for the test and it turns out that they charge over $100 for the visual field test, also I had to go back for the visual field and the dilation because the day I got my first exam I was going to be driving out of town that evening, so I was charged $55 for a "problem focused exam". All in all I ended up with a $270 bill from them when in the past my eye exams have cost me about $60. I will never go back to this place and I recommend that other people stay away as well unless you have a lot of disposable income to give them. read more
