I've received two rent increases in a little over a year now. My rent unit started around $130, and now they want to charge me about $320 for the same downstairs unit. I'm renting a storage unit here with my sister. It has been a few months so I don't understand the negative reviews. We came in and discussed what type of storage unit we would need. Upon entering, I noticed the surveillance camera screens on the tv behind the gentlemen at the service desk. They explained that they review the footage daily. There is also extra supplies and boxes for purchase if needed. The place is nice and secure. You are required a code for entry to the main gate and to get into the building. I like that tenants only have access to the floor they are assigned. For example, if I'm my unit is on the 2nd floor, my code will only let me go to the 2nd floor. The place has always been clean when we came by. In order to rent a cart, you'll have to reserve early during business hours. So far, I am happy with this storage company. read more

Do NOT rent a storage unit here. I just received a second price increase letter (last one a few months ago) and the price is now double from what it was when I started renting it a year ago! They constantly raise their prices and love to make it seem like it's no big deal. 10/10 DON'T RECOMMEND. Only rent if you need a unit for a couple of months. read more

I'm not really sure where to begin....I'm confused why this place got such high ratings on google. I rented for a 1 month, and got a pretty good deal. I got a first month free but I did have to pay the admin fee, the prorated days since moved in before the 1st, and the disc lock....no biggie. They do a military discount that would be applied to the monthly rent each month, but the active duty member would have to sign the lease......which makes no sense. On the rental agreement it asks, "Are you or your spouse active duty member?" She automatically checked the box yes for me....under SCRA laws military spouses are covered. Anyways, no biggie again. Now the entrance gate is the only gate you can use to enter and exit. The exit according to associate is getting repaired. The parking area within the gates is limited. It's like a cluster fuck....not going to lie. The elevators are not well maintained, for this to be a fairly new site, it's not taken care of. There are no directories for finding your unit. The 2nd time I came around I got lost for about 30mins trying to find my unit. It's not numbered in order. It will literally go from 300 to 330 then all of a sudden 650 appears out of nowhere. Trash litters the hall ways, and the parking area. I just can't with this place. read more

I had nothing but trouble from day one. I told them I had to bring my stuff from Escondido to Chula Vista site. I arranged and asked if I could do it the following Sunday. He said fine. I get there and and he tells me my storage will go up every 6 months $75.00??? What? Then tells me I have to have the cart back to them by 2pm because they have to lock up the carts. You can stay after hours but can't use the carts. I had rented a U-Haul truck that had to be returned early the next morning. It took my sister and I forever to unload. They blocked my phone and email so I have to there to pay and ask questions. I asked when the next date of increased fees would occur and he said between 5- 7 months??? What? He told me April 20. March 20 I had my payment taken for the new amount. No notice whatsoever. This entire experience has been a nightmare. Now I am trying to find a new place and I KNOW ALL THE RIGHT QUESTIONS TO ASK! I have nothing good to say about the rude, non-helpful people working there. Unless you enjoy getting screwed over, JUST AVOID THIS PLACE. I now will have to go through the expense and hard labor to do this again. read more

On 12/1/19 upon entrance of our unit, we found rodent droppings on our items inside the unit. We were in a rush so we did not have time to check out all of our belongings, but finding rodent droppings and a chewed up box was distressing. I don't know if other items were damaged as that we did not have time to thoroughly check everything. I immediately went down to notify customer service and he stated that this was a known issue, and did not offer an apology or resolution. His response was for me to email the manager which I did on 12/1/19 and as of today, I have not received a response. I also followed up with another email on 12/5/19 and as of today, no response. I do not recommend SmartStop Self Storage to anyone. read more

The only reason why I got this storage was because they offered a first 3 month 50% off discount. Which saved me a lot of money. On October 21st, i got my storage which was the 10x10 at $139 regular price, which they prorated. That was fine. Now on my last month of my 50% off, they charged me $103. I said to them "No. That amount is wrong. I should be charged about $70 for the first 3 months. This is my last month." Then they told me the 50% off deal last up to January 21st. We are only charging you until then. With a $11 insurance. You have a credit of $46.50 for this month. I said ok. That's fine but I'm still not receiving my 50% off for the month of January. Basically I'm being charged a daily rate up to January 21st without my 50% off discount for my last month. I will not recommend anyone to this storage unit. They will mislead you read more

Nightmare experience! I went to the facility, previewed the unit and made a reservation. Then julie rented out the unit to another person after my move was scheduled. She then tried to offer me another unit that would cost me additional money because of the distance to the unit for the movers. No offer to fix it or provide a discount to rectify problem. Where to begin? Renting a unit while we are moving on a deadline. My husband set up an account online and then came to recieve paperwork and sign in person to avoid contact. He was given a unit number, lock, and code and told it would work within the next 15 minutes. Came home, loaded the truck, came back to unload. You need a code to use the elevator - the code we were told would work in 15 minutes. We pull up, there about 9 mid life crisis guys skateboarding all over the front of the business, glaring at everyone entering. The gate was open, so we drive through and park. Type in the code repeatedly, told "Access Denied". Called the front office, no answer. Knocked on the glass doors. No answer. Kept typing in the code, nothing. Call the company, get a manager who in turn calls the on site office. Caught them during their lunch. The lady comes out, types in the code and it suddenly works. She apologizes, we start storing our stuff. Tonight, we go to drop off the last our things. We get there at 9:15 and begin unloading. Im useless with heavy lifting, so our friend helps my husband unload. 9:58, we finish and start to leave. My husband and his friend are ahead and go down. I go to another elevator to go down. Cool. It hits 10 pm, no more using the elevator system, because now the storage facility is closed. We go to leave, the gates refuse our access code. Call the company, the manager number... all closed and no one to answer. Had to park and call an uber. Not really a fan of childish business games. When we received our paperwork, we were told the storage units close at 10, not "we shut down the entire system and give zero options to exit" We have a unit across the street at Public Storage. No skateboarders blocking the entryway. No gates, they have codes to keep our stuff safe, and at 9 pm, the doors lock and we are able to get in our car and drive home. Locking the gates was like Walmart closing at 10 and locking us in and shrugging from the outside and telling us we should have left earlier. There's no exit option, and it's a HUGE flaw in the system. They get a second star only because my stuff hasn't caught on fire or been pooped on by the rats mentioned in previous reviews. UPDATE: Called Coorperate and when I pointed out how backwards the gate system was, with several flaws and hypothetical issues, he told me he would be changing the code for the rental unit and that we would have to speak to the office manager to get back in. This was after 3 calls at 6am to the same number and being told that it wasn't their problem and redirecting me to storefront who then stated it was Cooperates problem. Good luck dealing with them. If you know anyone who needs shelter at night, let them know to go inside the gates before 10pm and they'll be locked inside and safe: ) read more

Son was at storage yesterday and tried to pay but they didn't accept Apple Pay so okay, they said they were "open tomorrow" so could obviously pay then. Just went and they said they are closed for remodeling but the lady was outside and could help. She said I would have to call to pay! When I first rented a unit about 2 years ago. I was paying a reasonable rate for the unit. As time went on the prices went up without any notice so by the time I left it had gone up 50 percent. That was bad enough but soon after moving in they changed their hours ,I went there because they would be open until 10pm but that changed to 6 pm. So I fell behind on payments after my wallet had been stolen so they cut out my lock and put thiers on. I got everything paid up and was moving my stuff out but there were two missing items from the unit. One is not that important to me but the other was an old violin that was my Dad's ,it means the world to me and it was gone. I go to the office and the girl starts looking back over the video and you see my property in the pix they invintoried your belongings after your lock is cut off. So in July they were there in August they are gone. Only ones that had access are the employees. Now they tell me I didn't have insurance on my unit that I supposedly told them I had my own. That is not true how would I get storage insurance unless it's from a storage facility. None of this makes any sense to me so I now have to get a police report and all that just so they can review the video footage of my unit. The employee didn't seem to be bothered by the fact that whoever stole my things are her coworkers. read more

Love this storage, its the BEST storage i have tried and believe me, I have tried many. Very clean, it gas AC, its very secure and it feels like the office is always open. Awesome experience, just got our new home so wont need them anymore, but thanks Smart Stop for taking care of my precious family things.
