As I've said here before, the basic meal in America seems to be a cheeseburger and fries. After having traveled all day and had nothing to eat, I decided I want to have a cheeseburger and fries. To my chagrin, the hotel I was staying at couldn't figure out how to take an order for a cheeseburger and fries so I had to result the DoorDash. I ordered the double Smashburger and regular fries which were delivered in under 20 minutes to my hotel. Smash burger is a downtown Lousiville Kentucky burger chain that sits on the cities very popular and crowded 4th street live. Being a local I usually do not dine on 4th street often. Over the years I've hit up most of the establishments but there weee a few I haven't gotten to yet. So when my daughter had a local cheer comp at the convention center across the road we decided to make the trip. The place was insanely packed with all the local and traveling cheerleaders. The line was legit hanging out the door. I noticed a online order sign and area eBay was empty so I made the smart move of placing my order online and basically skipping the long line. While walking up to the online order waiting area it told the tale of two workers. The guy working the online orders was busting his behind and working super hard. The lady at the Counter was atrocious. She was absolutely the reason the line www insane. At one point instead of taking orders she made change and I kid you not she unrolled a quarter pack one quarter at a time and slowly places the quarters in the till one by one slowly as the line waited out the door. At another point she straight up left the register and took out a trash can that wasn't even full. Meanwhile the online order guy was hustling all around. After we got our order I heard him yell out "people if you want place you order online and you will get it faster". Moving on from the Jekyll and Hyde service the place of it wasn't crawling with people waiting to order was pretty spacious. We had a large party of 9 and found a table. Between our party we sampled the burgers and menu well. I personally got the smash burger or plain cheeseburger and was pleasantly surprised. I'm not much on chain burgers but this has good flavor. The rest of our party had everything from fried to grilled chicken, chicken tenders and tots. Everyone was very satisfied with their meals and said it was tasty. My only complaint is a minor one. The normal tater tot's are much better than the smash tots which had way too much garlic on them. Overall it was an experience and a memorable one just because of the contrasting styles of employees and crazy lines. However I would not be opposed to trying smash burger again. Just hopefully in a less hectic environment next time . read more

I found myself in downtown Louisville on a Sunday for my teen's mock trial competition. For lunch his crew wanted to eat at Smashburger located on 4th Street. This place is conflicting. I enjoy their burgers and fries, and was thankful for it to be open. I also know this location is slow and cleanliness is mediocre. This trip was no different; however, once our group had their order in we got our food quickly. You can't go wrong with a build your own single Smashburger with shoe string fries. I appreciate that you can order items separately for those that don't want a side and/or soda. If you're in the mood for a good burger, this is a solid choice ... but, bring your patience for the service and atmosphere. Note on parking: you'll need to find nearby street parking or garage, this section of 4th Street doesn't offer parking. It's a great option for someone staying at the Hyatt or another hotel. read more

Probably because they were by themselves. I cannot understand how a restaurant can expect the entire dining area to be run by one person. The same person also taking orders and making the milkshakes. When I finally got to the front of the line I had to wait another 30 minutes for the employee to bring food out to all of the customers and make about 6 milkshakes before she came back to the register to take another order. Two employees walked to the front counter several times, refusing to make eye contact with customers. There was no one to take orders for several minutes at a time. There was also no ice in the soda machine. Waited almost a full hour and a half to actually receive our food. Today I placed my order at 6:51pm, an order for one person. I received a text that the order should be ready by 7:07pm. I show up at 7:10 and not ready. No update from anyone. At 7:22 I receive a text that it is ready. I ask the workers and they tell me that the order is not ready. I continue to wait until 7:34 when the order is finally ready. No apologies or updates until I ask. Most of the food was cold. Close to a 45 minute wait for cold food is unacceptable. Go anywhere but here. read more

I tried Smashburger on Fourth a few weeks ago and was turned away because they couldn't cover the orders already taken. They should have done the same today. When I entered there was no line to order and it was 12:45 so I figured there would be quick service. They took my order and, after I had paid, told me it would be a 15 minute wait. Ok. But my order was taken at 12:47 and filled at 1:30. No apologies. I did hear the manager tell someone they had only 2 cooks in the kitchen. But rather than pull the front staffer to help in the kitchen, she allowed her to walk about wiping down the counter, take more orders and reply dismissively to the complaints about the wait without apology, while sporting a don't-approach-me glare and a covid mask as a chin strap. I give management a negative star, for the general rudeness of the front staffer and because she kept taking orders even after the crowd waiting for their food grew to about 20 people. In fact, as I left at least 8 people were still waiting and the lunch crowd was gone with only two occupied tables. I am well aware of the staffing shortage in the food industry but Smashburger owes us the courtesy of a proper heads up before we order. I spoke with another customer who had ordered at 12:30 and got his food just before me, an hour wait. I give 4 stars (minus the negative star) because the double cheeseburger was delicious and so were the rosemary fries. They even left off the sauce and ketchup as I requested. My cost was $10.68 for the meal, with a free water. I won't come back again for awhile and will ask about the wait before I order. I just can't give up that much time away from work for a fast food carry out. Even a delicious one. read more

This Smashburger is constantly busy, which is to be expected because of its central location downtown. The staff is pretty friendly but I'll be honest- the food was mediocre at best. The milkshake I ordered had a strange, plastic-y aftertaste. The burger was nothing special, unfortunately. I got the spicy Baja Burger with Guacamole and it was just messy and boring. The whole meal also violently upset my stomach. The only good thing about it was the fries- they would have been decent had they not been cold. I may visit smashburger in the future and give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was the location I went to- not sure! I'd be willing to give the Hurstbourne location a try. read more
