Best groomer ever! Our German Shepard had spent the last three weeks running with two other dogs through flagstaff AZ. She was so dirty and we could not wait to have her bathed before we went home. We stopped in Phoenix and they could fit her in. They did a great job on her fur and nails. I think it was the best job we have ever seen. Much better than that other "smart" place with an excellent price. She was beautiful and smelled great and not like perfume. Only complaint was no one reminded us to bring in a copy of her shot record. Other than that it was great with a knowledgeable staff read more

It was my first time going there the other day and I was worried it may not be the best experience because my dog was unfortunately very matted, but it ended up being just fine. Absolutely awful!!!!! If yelp on my phone would let me do zero stars that is what this place deserves. They totally butchered a grooming on my 7 month old goldendoodle. Her hair is incredibly splotchy and they even cut her and drew blood under her front armpits!!!!! My pup has been to 3 different groomers as we've been trying to find one that we liked the most and every other groomer has been so complementary on how well behaved she is. This place had the audacity to try and blame the horrific job they did on the dog! I will never recommend them to anyone and will never even bring my dog within a 100 yards of this place ever again. We used Smelly dog for daycare and a few small purchases. After moving to the Valley, I wanted to provide my young dog with daycare a few days a week. Smelly dog was one of the few options in downtown so we decided to try. My dog came for 11 or 12 days of daycare. There was never anything wrong with this place but I never quite felt right. My dog never wanted to go which should have been a clue. The staff never seemed to even recognize her, I got asked at least 3 times if we had been there before. They didn't provide me with a tour so I'm left to trust that the place is clean and appropriate for daycare. All you can see when you pickup/drop off, are dogs in a very small "waiting pen" of sorts. I surely hope they aren't there all day. They also ask you to write down what time you'll be back to pick them up. I've come to pick up my dog 45 min before the time I put down and she was already (or still?) in the waiting pen area. What was I paying for? Her to sit in this box all day with several other dogs? If not, she should have still been playing in the other "area" if I unexpectedly picked her up so early. The prices were okay, with the package. However we've found a "camp" that is cheaper, includes cameras, and my dogs can't wait to get into each time we go. I would suggest you look around a bit before committing to Smelly dog. We've been taking our two Wheaten Terriers to Smelly Dog for years. Between washing and grooming, I'd estimate we've spent at least $200/mo. for the last 6 years. Recently, there's been a groomer who is more than awful and I don't think we can go back. You'd think spending around $15k at that store over the years would at least facilitate non-confrontational encounters, but not with this woman. Three grooms ago, she gave them a cut that was not a traditional Wheaten cut but what I can only assume was Cocker Spaniel cut. I could barely recognize my dogs so I'm making an assumption on the breed she thought they were. Then, at the next groom, upon trying to illustrate the type of cut they should have, I was aggressively told "your dogs will *never* have a Wheaten cut" by her. Essentially, for whatever reason, she, in her professional opinion, felt like letting me know that if I keep bringing my dogs there, she'd likely give them whatever cut she felt was appropriate du jour. We kept working with her, over the next two grooming sessions to get the dogs to the cut we wanted. Upon picking the dogs up today (the final straw), I came to find out they were chained up in the back. They were brought out with wet legs, smelled a little like urine and was told they're now aggressive dogs and need to be separated. Really? NOW they're aggressive? So, after 6 years, we suddenly have dogs that need to be banished to where I assume it's ok to sit in their own urine until they're picked up. The only aggressive one so far has been the groomer. She did dry their legs, but that made the smell worse (especially in the car). I urge anyone to only go there when the owner is present for the full time, otherwise, you should expect a similar (mis)treatment. I really, really used to love this place. read more

What I LOVE about Smelly Dog is their hours. Most of the other places in town have shorter hours which won't work with my work schedule at all. Smelly Dog has perfect hours! I've only taken my dogs there a couple of times, but the times that one of my dogs was misbehaving or if there was another issue, they didn't call me about it. I found out when I picked them up. I would have liked to get a phone call about the issue rather than addressing it when I picked up my dogs. read more

My sister and I have been to many different specialty dog stores, we always find a dog bakery when on vacation to treat our pugs and while she was visiting me this past week it was no different. I love this place! Every single staff member is welcoming and friendly, and they are always excited to see my pup. The owner is very personable, and she genuinely cares about your needs. She has helped me many times choose the right things for my dog - from bones to toys to food! She is a small business owner that supports other small business, which I love! I take my dog here for daycare, and every time I pick her up she is happy and tired, just the way I like her. They also give me feedback if she had a exceptionally great day or if she had an off day, so I know they are diligently supervising the pups in the daycare! And they even do water play in the hot months, and that is always Letty's favorite. I have recommended this business to many friends with fur babies, and I'll be coming here as long as I live in Phoenix :) read more

After several mediocre experiences over the past year finding someone who could handle my rescue lab, a friend suggested smelly dog. I always take him with trepidation because he had a very rough life for his first four years. He's skittish, but incredibly loving. They listened to me, they gave him lots of time to get comfortable, and returned him to me clean, brushed, and with the short nails that have been a problem for others. I'm all in for smelly dog. After a couple of grooming visits to Wag 'n' Wash, I tired of waiting 3 weeks to get an appointment to have our Labradoodle groomed. At the recommendation of a neighbor, we tried Smelly Dog and have been extremely satisfied with their grooming services. I've been able to get appointments within a few days. I like that he doesn't have to spend the entire day there, just the amount of time it takes to complete the grooming. The price is very reasonable and most important, he looks great when he comes home. We call our dog a "special needs" pup because he has numerous medical problems. A few months back, we made an appointment for him to be groomed and explained that he would probably have trouble standing for long periods of time because of a blood clot in his hind leg. They had no problem at all accommodating his medical problem and took a little longer than usual to groom him so he could have breaks and lie down to rest from time to time. Yes, the staff is mostly pretty young (and we aren't) but we've always had good interactions with them, on the phone and in person. We'll definitely keep going back to Smelly Dog. read more

We scheduled an appointment for our Yorkshire Terrier Tony on September 6th because our normal groomer was unavailable and Smelly Dog was just down the street. When we walked in the girl at the counter ask how we wanted our dog groomed, length, etc. I begin to explain and she stated I should explain exactly what we want to the actual groomer who would be taking care of our dog. Our dogs coat was about two inches in length all over. We explained to the groomer we wanted our dog to be trimmed about half the length all over paying attention to his ears, hair in his eyes and tail. When we picked our dog up he looked like a hairless Chihuahua half miniature poodle. The groomer shaved him completely, didn't touch his tail or his face. I asked to speak with manager of whom stated there was a mix up in communication when we explained what we wanted. I explained she looked me right in the face and said she understood what we wanted. The manager offered us a free shampoo on our next visit. There Will Not Be A Next Visit!!! Heck what will they wash our dog is hairless until at least November. Dee W. read more

I have been taking my goldendoodle to smelly dog for 2 years for daycare and grooming. I really like this place, the owners are very friendly and informative, and want to make sure you are happy with all services. My dog is exhausted when I pick her up at the end of the day, so I know she has been playing hard. After one of our grooming sessions I wanted certain areas trimmed a little shorter and they fixed it without any problems. I recommend smelly dog to anyone I meet with a dog. They are amazing! They are expense but definitely worth the price! I have brought my golden doodle here for about 4 times and they never fail me. From the minute you step in the shop, you are greeted with a smile. They sure do make you feel like your pet is in good hands. I always forget to ask for the same groomer she got last time & by the time I remember, it's too late. This was my second visit and I continue to be impressed!! I have 5...yes 5 poodles and they took them all at once and had them groomed in less than 3 hours. They smelled great and haircuts were EXACTLY what was requested. Even my rescue dog that is very nervous about everything in life loved it there! They obviously love animals and it shows. I only took my dog to smelly dog no dog parks etc.. 2 days later he starts coughing which then gave my other 2 dogs kennel cough. They say they screen the dogs but something that day must have slipped through the cracks with 31 dogs checked in that day. Let's just sat 400 bucks later all 3 dogs are cured. read more

Just had my cattle dog mix groomed here. Am used to going to Doggie in the Window, closer to my house and Brandon is great, so much so that he's working 3-4 wks. out. I just didn't call him soon enough, and wanted a trim for the hotter weather for my dog, since we exercise outside. I told the groomer I didn't want him shaved and she said she could taper to his tail, so to keep it longer. Right now it looks like a little shelf where his back and tail meet, not a taper as far as I can see. I know the back hair will grow out in time and all of it look better, but not at this moment. Also, don't remember exactly what was quoted on the phone as an estimate, I think around $50 for a 30 lb. dog, but I was surprised at a $65 bill, including $10 extra for nail trimming, which they asked about and I was on the fence because we run on asphalt and my dog's nails were fairly short already. The extra price wasn't quoted for the nails when I said "Yes" to the groomer's question, and as there is so much competition (I called Alta Vista and thought they were high!) just there on 7 Av., adding Wag N' Wash and then close by, maybe I'm in the minority. I took my dog here and after we got home I noticed his eyes were blood shot and he was acting strange. I took him to the vet that same day and they said that he had been strangled and asked if he was with me all day. I told them he was at the groomer right before i noticed his eyes. I went back to groomer and of course they said he was being aggressive and needed to be restrained. Of course they denied strangling him. I also asked why they didn't tell me he was aggressive when i picked him up in the first place but they had no good explanation. I would not recommend this place! read more

Honestly I really like this place. But I just had the most awkward rude experience. The customer service there the past two visits have been horrible. Today I spoke with a lady on the phone told me they had no spots available for a full groom, she suggested we bring them in for a wash, facial trim and nails clipped. So we showed up at 3pm, a young boy named dee greeted us and asked what he could help with, I told him what I was there for. He looked very puzzled and asked his co worker (which is the lady I spoke with on the phone) , her response was: " I am not going to deal with them you can go in the back and ask them." The boy looked back and said: "the groomers are actually leaving for the day." The boy never went to ask the groomer. I replied with aren't you open until 5pm, he said yes but they won't do it. There has been numerous times I have taken my dogs here at 3pm and still got a full service groom. The boy was so awkward acting and the lady was very rude. We called back to ask who was in charge and the boy didn't know what to say almost seemed like he was lying and it was like pulling teeth to find out who the owner is and when the owner "Jackie" would be. I decided to treat my pup to a little spa day with a bath and nail trim. This was my first time taking her to a place other than her usual vet appointments. I went in there and the staff was super friendly and accommodating. They took my info down and said I could pick her up in an hour and a half. I was a little nervous to leave her but she seemed to be more than happy to go. An hour and a half later I got a call saying that my pup was ready to be picked up. I pick her up and received such amazing compliments on how sweet my pup was, etc. We get home and she smelled amazing! I did, however, notice that her nail trim was horribly done. Some were still long, others were way too short to the point where blood was drawn. She's had her nails trimmed before at the vet office with no problems so I can only assume that whoever did the job here was inexperienced. I'd go back for the bath services but I'll stick to the vet office for her nail trim. read more

Well Smelly dog used to be great but now it appears there are new owners that are not friendly and tell you that they cannot see you for at least 2 weeks with no flexibility. There was no sign of any kind of friendliness, The girl had no personality and acted like she did not want to be there. I took my dog to the groomer on Bethany and 16th st and she was friendly and took me right away and did an excellent job. I would recommend them rather than the new owners of Smelly Dog. read more

This place was all around superb! I travel a lot with my dog and have been to a ton of these self serve dog washes. Everyone there was friendly and helpful. Even though they were extremely busy everyone was eager to help if I needed it. The shampoo and conditioner smelled great and there was plenty of it. (I have a long hair dog and she needs a lot of shampoo) The wash included nail clipping, towels, soap, tear free for the face, brushes, and ear cleaner. They clipped some of her dreads for me and even gave her a belly shave after I bathed and dried her. This was extra but very affordable and I was surprised they were willing to do it seeing how busy they were. If I lived here I would most definitely return and will when I come back to Phoenix. If only I could take smelly dog with me everywhere! Oh yeah, and check out there doggie duvet covers, very cool and super green! read more

I like Smelly Dog a lot. I've used both the self wash and grooming service. The self wash is super easy and a there is always a full stock of supplies on hand and helpful wash-area staff. I've always been satisfied with the grooming of my shih tzu as well - the last groom was outstanding! There is a good selection of dog food, snacks and toys and the staff generally has a good understanding of the quality and ingredients in the brands of food they carry. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is because the sales are always pretty slow and there seems to be some confusion on customer service priorities - example, on one occasion when I was just trying to buy a bag of dog food (and I was the only one in the store) I waited for about four minutes for the counter sales staff to acknowledge me as I stood right in front of her as she talked on the phone about the comings and goings of the groomer, appointments, and other general, clearly non-emergency issues. When the clerk finally got off the phone she did apologize and then told me she was talking to the owner who wanted an update on the happenings of the store - I think the priority in this case should have been the customer standing in front of her. It would have been wiser to put the owner on hold and ring up a quick sale. It was only four minutes, I know, but it was kind of annoying and made me, a customer, feel like my business was not that important. Overall though, a good local place to get everything pup-related taken care of! read more

I took my dog Tom here a few times before but this last time has proven that they have abused my dog. The first few times I brought him there the hair around his neck would start to fall off. They were from scabs that looked like they came from a collar. I changed the collar I was using and got him a harness. THEN come last week, I brought Tom home after getting groomed to a family christmas party. Everyone noticed that there was a big bump on his neck. I looked closer and he had a dry scab about the size of a half dollar. Progressively the scab opened up, got worse, and became infected. I called and their manager answered, she told me to bring him in so she could take a look at it. I went in friday morning, she wasn't there, I was told by the lady at the front desk that she (their manager) would be in as soon as they opened tomorrow. Came in the next day, to be told that their manager was coming in later because they changed the schedule... Must be nice to change your hours whenever you want and not notify people who are given the expectation you will be available... I finally just called and sent her the pictures of my dogs open wound. I had to bring him to the vet where they shaved his hair and they could see where something had scrapped multiple times on his neck. Because of the condition where the cut occurred (likely dirty bath water) he now needs antibiotics and is also required to wear a cone for two weeks. When I called the manager, she refunded me my for the bath and I asked her to talk to the owner about paying my vet bill. After she never called me back the next day like we discussed, I gave her a call. Understanding that she can only do so much until the owner gets back to her I wasn't that upset with her until she says "We have a sign on the door that says we are not responsible for any harm to your animal". Yes you are! If my dog was too difficult to groom they should have stopped and called to tell me that they couldn't groom him instead of putting him through hell! Even notifying me the day I picked him up that he pulled too hard and had been cut from the restraint they used would have been acceptable to me, Tom has been to plenty of other grooming salons in the past and I never was notified he was too difficult to groom or pulled too much. I understand now why Tom did not want to go with the groomer when he was dropped off when I thought it was just separation anxiety. At this point I feel as if Smelly Dog is not on my side and has no concern for the well being of my dog. They have taken a stance that this was not their fault and if something happened at their salon it was my issue. The staff has not made any effort to check up on Tom, show concern for his well being or call me back when I requested they did so to discuss this matter. read more

Are they under new ownership? Been taking my dogs there for over 3 years. Took both dogs in today and didn't recognize a single staff member. Everyone seemed to be struggling and confused. Took 15 minutes to get 1,dog checked in with no other customers there! They first said they had no record of my dog but found it later. Brought my second dog in an hour later. just terrible customer service. Never got a call that my first dog was in. Tried to charge me for filing of the nails. Not only did I not request that....after checking the dogs....it wasn't done! Tried to charge me a handling fee for 2nd dog. She's been going there for 3+ years and although she is a nervous dog, no one has EVER mentioned to me that she was a challenge! Asked for that dog to not be put in pen with other dogs, yet there she was while my "social" dog was kept with the groomer. Absolute chaos! Bye bye Smelly Dog. read more

You want to know a good way to lose a customer? Horrible customer service. The groomer did a great job on my dog and for that reason I give a 3 star but if you're looking for a friendly place you may want to look elsewhere. I have been here quite a few times and never experienced such bad customer service as I did today. No one was friendly, no one was smiling, it's was like I walked into a funeral. They told me that they would call me once my dog was finished, 2 1/2 hours later, I decided to call them to see how much longer it was going to be. A very unenthusiastic lady answered (like she hated her job) and told me that my dog had been finished and that she called/left a message but I definitely did not receive a call or voicemail. I asked the lady if she could verify my number because it was concerning that my dog had been waiting for quite some time. She confirmed and it was the right number so that leads me to think that she either lied or dialed the wrong number. She didn't even apologize for the situation. When arriving to pick my dog up, a younger lady who I assume was the same one to answer my call looked at me without a smile. There was nicer middle aged lady who helped to check me out and If it wasn't for her I would have left 2 stars. Like I said the groomer did a great job but damn there customer service sucks! You are surrounded by adorable dogs, you think you'd act a little happier. read more

Wow, wow, wow! ...or maybe that should be BOW, WOW, WOW! My dog and I did the self-serve wash today and we are dedicated fans after only one visit! Leah at the front desk made us feel welcome and Tim in the wash bays was capable and personable. For fifteen dollars my large lab is no longer a smelly dog. The wash bays lower (great for older dogs with hurting hips...and super for their human parents who don't have to lift them) and raise to a comfortable height. They provide shampoo, warm water, cotton balls, ear solution, face wash, towels and a blow dryer! I'm home and done...no worrying about doing a load of laundry to wash the dog wash towels...no cleaning the tub, shower, or porch of copious amounts of dog fur...and no worrying that a wet dog will roll in the dirt and then jump on the couch! I love it! We'll definitely be back. Thanks so much. You all are wonderful! read more
