Dr. Kim was only one of two dentist to respond to my request for an emergency procedure yesterday. I have had a toothache for over 2 weeks but my Dentist had knee surgery and was not able to see me. But you would think that he would make arrangements' for a back up dentist in case of emergencies since I've been going to him for over 25 years. I was on my own and considering flying to another island since things were looking bleak here in Hilo. But thankfully my old dentist was willing to see me yesterday and I'm having a root canal this morning. Needless to say I'm not going back to my old dentist for leaving all his patients on a lurch like that. I purposely waited a year in order to see if the dental work was sound, and that the quality of care I received during follow up visits and routine checkups were still up to par. I am happy to report that Dr. Kim's cosmetic dentistry looks amazing and is of the highest quality, given that I grind my teeth a lot during the day. Of equal importance is that my oral health continues to be well and well taken care of by Dr. Kim and his staff. Dr. Kim is an excellent dentist, I'm so grateful that I found him. He and his staff were kind and down to earth, they made me feel very comfortable. Dr. Kim was very knowledgeable and happy to answer all of my questions. Before going, I hadn't been to the dentist in an embarrassingly long time but he and his staff were not at all judgmental and genuinely seemed happy to help me. The exam and cleaning were very thorough, I felt like I was very well taken care of. I ended up needing a little bit of work on two teeth and it was painless and looks amazing. But Dr. Kim, and his amazing staff, have made this unlikely scenario my reality; I actually LOVE going to Dr. Kim's dental office! Let's start with the doctor. Dr. Kim is a truly gifted dental professional and I feel incredibly fortunate to have found him shortly after moving to Hawaii. He is smart, an engaged and active listener, and has very honed and precise technical skills. He really takes the time to get to know you as a person, not just a patient, and he uses this time to address whatever concerns or apprehensions you might have. In the past, I've had many problems with traditional dental preparations and chemicals. His methods and materials are so biocompatible that I don't even bother to ask about them anymore; I just know what he is using is going to be fine. A great doctor, however, is only as good as his support staff--thankfully Dr. Kim's staff is the best! From the moment you enter the door, the staff looks after you like you are a dear friend in their home. For a period of 4 years, I suffered from constant sensitivity on one side of my mouth. I saw a few dentists while I was in California who couldn't get a good grasp of the problem and dismissed my concerns as normal sensitive gums. Finally, I developed a periodontal abscess and broke the root of my tooth which required extraction. When that tooth was removed, I found out that the bone had receded far enough that I needed a bone graft in order to get an implant. I moved to Hawaii before the job was completed so I was referred to Dr. Tony Kim to complete the crown for my implant. The thing that impressed me most when I first met Dr. Kim was that he took his time to listen to my story and did a thorough exam. He explained to me what happened to that tooth and that the deep pockets and gum disease caused bone loss which lead to the tooth fracture. I realized that this could've been prevented if I was shown how to take better care of my tooth earlier on instead of being dismissed. When another tooth started to become sensitive, he was able to save me from getting a second implant. Thankfully, I'm no longer suffering from dental problems. Highly recommend Tony Kim and his outstanding staff. I had a tooth that was bothering me - but being a busy person - I put off fixing it until it demanded my attention. Dr. Kim was able to fit me in quickly for X-rays, cleaning and tooth repair. The cavity was severe. Other dentists I've seen probably would have jumped to a costly and painful repair (root canal) but not Dr. Kim. He said he'd do his best to repair it. He and his staff were very kind and attentive. I've had horrible experiences with other dentists in the past and I can honestly say that he has gained my trust and continued patronage. Days after the repair I'm happy to report that my tooth looks and feels great! The entire experience was efficient, gentle and professional. Although my dental insurance is not accepted by Dr. Kims office, I felt the care I would receive would be worth the out-of-pocket expenses since I have a complex case. I figured they would be more focused on the care they provided instead of the money they are making. I wanted to make sure I went to someone who genuinely cared about my health because I am 30 years old and have type 1 Diabetes and an also another auto immune disease. I was hoping to find the best care for my long-term health. When I went for a consultation to meet Dr. Kim, we I discussed my areas of concern and then he went over his. I was happy that I had a dentist who understood both my medical and dental concerns. Dr. Kim gave me a referral to an ortho to address one of the issues. I went to the ortho and referred me to a surgeon. I made an appointment with Dr. Kim's office to discuss my options after getting the opinions from both the ortho and the surgeon. Dr. Kim wanted me to have some teeth removed... explained the other work that needed to be completed before starting with the ortho. So I went back to the surgeon to have the teeth removed. I made a follow up with Dr. Kim after I had the teeth removed. I was having some pain. He asked me if I had time to get some work done that day. I needed a crown done on another tooth. I was not planning on coming in and having to pay for a crown that day especially since I had just had oral surgery the week before. I just wanted to make sure everything was ok because of my medical conditions. Right on Dr. Kim's website it says "Dr. Tony Kim is a highly trained general dentist who has focused his studies to tackle complex cases. He is focused on delivering superior dental care while not forgetting that patients want to be comfortable and feel relaxed. A primary focus is the holistic relationship between the health of the mouth and the entire body. This afternoon I went in to have the temporary crown replaced with the permanent one. That is when Dr. Kim told me he felt like I should find another dentist to work with. He went on to tell me there are too many people involved in my treatment and that I was being pulled too many ways. I do agree, there are 3 different doctors all telling me how they think we should go about the problem, but Dr. Kim was the one who sent me to the ortho... who then sent me to a surgeon. Dealing with my teeth issues is embarrassing enough as it is. Having him sit there and act like I was messing up my care when all I did was go where he referred me. I didn't even know what to say. I was just at a loss for words. I started to cry behind those big ugly sunglasses you have to wear in the exam chair. I feel now like he completely failed me as a professional. I sat there with tears going down my face the whole time he replaced my crown with the worst anxiety. When he was done he began the conversation again. I felt so uncomfortable after my procedure about the tone he was using to discuss moving forward with my treatment. He was telling me he has people he likes to work with moving forward...I had to get up and excuse myself because he was making my feel so anxious and uncomfortable. I went and saw the people who he had referred me to! He uses a different surgeon then the ortho but never seemed like an issue before. For someone who focused their studies on complex cases, this would be a great case showcase those skills. If you have chosen to go here, congratulate yourself. You have found the cream of the crop. The amazing Dr. Anthony Kim. We have had Dr. Kim as our dentist in So Cal for several years now. And his leaving to move to Honolulu to receive further training was absolutely traumatic. It is rare to find such a fine doctor and so difficult to replace. Thankfully, he is very loyal to his patients, so much he has returned to his old office each month for special appointments. I feel safe in his hands and am just as loyal right back at him. We found Dr. Kim after going to another excellent dentist for many years (an obscenely long drive for us, but necessary). After tiring of the drive and hair-raisingly scary LA freeways, we knew it was time to find someone just as good, but closer to home. Easy to say, but a very hard bill to fill. So here is how I officially met him. All I can say is, we liked sushi, him too. So friend him, then just stalk him. Dirty little secret. You will know...just look for frequent check ins. Aloha Cones, maybe? We accidentally met several times socially at our mutually appreciated sushi spot before realizing that some kind of divine intervention was going on here. This was meant to be our future dentist (you'll know too). Mr. B is well known in the best of dentistry circles for his fragile teeth, massive dental bills, and now gorgeous implants. His expenses could have been a nice retirement package for many of us (I am not really kidding). When a dental emergency arose for Mr. B, I had to see Dr Kim in action, so I came along for the ride. Turns out, he seriously impressed us both. I became his patient as well, and our adult kids and families have followed suit. After having experienced some really slip shod dentistry in the past, I must say, the technology he uses is impressive, his thoroughness, beyond anything I have ever experienced. And if he determined a need for other specialties, this already highly skilled dentist has no qualms about referrals. He is quite well connected. Definitely a plus. His extreme efforts to make us at ease, comfortable and pain-free is a wonderment. Even our littlest family member, 2 year old Drew, grandson extraordinaire, had a beautiful experience, no tears. His hollistic approach to dentistry and general health has been the crowning moment and the definite deal sealer. And please do check out the special products he sells in his office. As a diabetic, I appreciate his excellent, sugar free products, including SF lollipops for the kids, breath mints, toothpaste, mouthwash, and ayurvedic oral pulling rinses. Dr. Kim comes highly recommended - this is the dentist you need to see if you want to get rid of those toxic silver fillings (50% mercury), also known as amalgams. Dr. Kim is a HOLISTIC DENTIST, and he practices SAFE MERCURY REMOVAL at a reasonable cost... I did have to pay out of pocket for this procedure (insurance did not cover much), but it was well worth the cost. I had 5 of my mercury fillings removed and my son had 3 of them removed as well. They were replaced with white, composite fillings for my son, and white fillings/partial crowns for me. It can be difficult to find a holistic dentist that will actually practice safe mercury removal, while keeping high standards for patient care, as the vapors released from the mercury can be extremely toxic if inhaled during the procedure. Why did I even allow mercury fillings to be placed in my mouth and in my son's mouth in the first place? Good question! I didn't know any better years ago!! Dr. Kim was very patient with my 8 year-old boy and knew how to put him at ease (a very difficult task indeed). Dr. Kim has a soft hand at placing local anesthesia... I couldn't believe how he got my son to sit still while placing two huge syringes in his mouth (one on each side). My son would NEVER EVER sit still for an injection before (he would always put up a fight, w/ me having to pin him down in the end), so this was like one of those A-HA moments for me. I also had 2 injections to numb my mouth in order to have my mercury fillings removed and replaced, and I did not feel a thing myself. I had 3 partial crowns placed after my fillings were removed... they form the actual crown while you wait, so you get to leave with your permanent crown already in place! Dr. Kim's practice is more on the cutting edge of dentistry, including laser surgery for gum treatment - gingivitis/periodontal disease. All in all, I had major work done here w/ the removal of my 5 silver fillings, 3 partial crowns (molars), deep cleaning (gums), and my son's mercury removal as well. I hasn't been to a dentist in two years before I visited Dr. Kim. But I was really looking forward to all the visits here like never before. read more

Dr. Kim is awesome. He is well trained, has wonderful bedside manner and he does amazing work! This is my first Yelp review but he is well deserving. I had many root canals and crowns in my late teens and 20s by a family dentist and a few different endodontists on the mainland while attending college. Over the years, I suffered from bleeding gums, jaw pain and gum sensitivity. I also had concerns regarding some discoloring on my front tooth which was embarrassing especially as a professional meeting new people everyday. When I first saw him a little over a year ago, I was having dull constant pain, could no longer chew on the right without discomfort and food was getting stuck in my left upper molars. I saw several dentists and no resolution. I basically was on a path of continuing to need more root canals due to my unhealthy gums despite brushing and flossing regularly. During my consultation, Dr. Kim immediately made me feel comfortable. His evaluation was more thorough than any I have had before and care plan was very clear. It was obvious he truly wanted me to get my mouth back to good health and he had confidence that I could be free from pain. He did an amazing job. While he worked on me (through several sessions due to the extensive work needed) he was always checking to make sure I was comfortable and he and his staff are always very professional and caring. Long story short, I no longer have any pain, my gums are healthy and my smile looks great again. He fixed it all and I couldn't be happier. I received may compliments on my new smile as well. My mouth was a mess. I had an injury 20 years ago that slowly led to disruption in my upper teeth. 3 front teeth were loose and I was going to lose them. My vanity was what pushed me to seek help. When you meet me, you might think this is a fairly normal person. But get me in a dental chair and I have a melt down. That calm demeanor is replaced with the ugly cry and quivering lower lip. What led me to that point is a series of unpleasant dental experiences with different providers over the years. I now needed dental work and needed to get over my fear. I needed someone that was skilled, who would listen, and who I could trust. I went in for a consult and was in for a pleasant surprise. They listened. It has taken a series of appointments and procedures to fix my smile. The problems were addressed and fixed. Fixing my smile not only addressed my vanity but a few other issues like less post nasal drip, better sleep, less URI. And yes, I now have a great smile. In summary, Dr Kim is a fantastic and extremely competent Dentist and human being. His staff is exceptional, kind, and warm. Dr. Kim and his team are fantastic! Before I found Dr. Kim, I was at a large dental office with multiple rotating dentists. I had some negative experiences and began researching local dentists to make a change. I've worked with functional medicine and naturopathic doctors to make some health changes, so I was intrigued by his holistic approach. In my initial appointment, Dr. Kim used a camera to take a photo of my airway and explained that it seemed obstructed (hopefully I am explaining this properly). As someone who experienced a lot of fatigue, I had never considered that this could be a problem contributing to poor sleep quality. He referred me to a physician (that I coincidentally was already a patient of) for a follow up. A sleep study confirmed that my sleep quality was poor and that my obstructed airway could be contributing to this problem. The physician I was referred to applied osteopathic manipulative treatments to my head, neck and shoulders and loosened my muscles enough to relax and open my airway. My sleep quality improved within a matter of weeks, all thanks to Dr. Kim's discovery. At a later appointment he took another photo of my airway and confirmed that he had a great visual of it. I never would have expected that a dentist could help me discover and fix this problem- thank you Dr. Kim! I also had multiple crowns handled by Dr. Kim and his team. I used to have pretty severe dentist anxiety as a result of previous negative experiences with different dentists; however, after multiple procedures with Dr. Kim I feel much less dentist anxiety. He has a very calm and reassuring demeanor. While I certainly hope I don't need to have any complicated dental procedures any time soon, I am relieved to know I am a patient of Dr. Kim's if anything comes up. It seems like the negative reviews are focused around his office staff. It did take me several attempts and follow up calls to get an initial appointment at the end of 2019 or early 2020, but I am very glad I was persistent. I went to Dr. Kim for a second, biological opinion to address a cracked, infected tooth that needed immediate attention. I take a holistic approach to all aspects of my health and was curious about biological dentistry. I noticed immediately the inefficiency of his staff. It took several attempts without returned calls to get the consultation. Dr. Kim was very kind and informative, and I was interested in exploring my levels of comfort in changing over to him as my primary dentist. However, there was a sense of coldness and disconnect with his staff, a total lack of aloha. In fact, on a referral slip for an endodontist, the woman felt the need to add a note stating I am not their patient! The referral to neighboring Dr Noz Yamauchi went extremely well: he and his staff were so kind and caring in exploring options for me. After several visits, he asked me to walk back to Dr. Kim's office to make an appointment for an opinion. He walked over himself to pave the way. When I got there, a woman wouldn't let me inside the door, saying someone would contact me. No one did. I phoned several times, to no avail. Then I got a text msg stating that Dr Kim was too busy to look at the report. With Dr Noz' kind advice, I proceeded with an extraction with an oral surgeon. Finally I was able to speak to someone at Dr Kim's office to make an appointment for a cleaning that was due (again, I wanted to shift from my current dental services). Yay! Finally I had an appointment! But then his staff texted me that she cancelled the cleaning because I needed an exam first. I had to wait a month for that to happen, but I made the appointment. So I scheduled my cleaning at my prior dentist's office & at that time discovered 2 more cracked teeth! I called Dr. Kim's office to see if I could be seen sooner. By now there was a receptionist answering who did her best to help find a way. She suggested that I see Dr. Kim's partner sooner to address the cracked teeth while keeping the later appointment with Dr. Kim for an overall exam. I thought it was a wonderful idea, but was told it would have to be approved by Soledad, the patient coordinator. Soledad emailed with several suggestions of other dentists I could try??? Why do I continue to get feelings of coldness & rejection from this woman? In desperation, I explained the receptionist's idea of the 2 appointments. She agreed & I thought we were good to go, with 3 weeks to wait to have the cracked teeth seen (I've been spoiled at my prior office with getting immediate appointments for cracked teeth or other urgent issues). I was trusting that the wait would be worth it to have a biological approach. Then, on the long-awaited day of the first appointment with the partnering dentist, I get a confirmation email for the second appointment only. Apparently Soledad mistakenly canceled the first appointment!! Without an explanation or apology, she offered by text to set up an appointment at the end of the day. I was really upset, having waited three weeks with an urgent issue and going around & around in circles with getting appointments with this staff. I agreed to change to the appointment at the end of the day, but also let her know that she made a mistake & owed me an apology. She texted that I was banned from the office & she cancelled the appointments I'd waited three weeks for!! She said the doctors were "uncomfortable" with me! I'm sure Dr Kim is wonderful, but Soledad functions as a firewall to prevent anyone she takes a dislike to from having access to Dr Kim. I've never felt so unwelcomed, especially here in Hawai'i. As a visitor to the Islands needing help for my tooth pain, I needed to find trusted dental help, and fast. I knew I may need at least one, possibly 2 root canals and I was told I had up to 8 - count them - 8 cavities that I may need to have addressed at a recent appointment in my home state of Alaska. This did not seem to make sense to me when I had passed my prior appointment 1 year before with a clean bill of health. I started looking around Oahu and was told I needed to coordinate with a local dentist as well as with an endodontist, which was discouraging since I was not from the area and had received no outside recommendations. After calling around, I fortunately came to Dr. Tony Kim's office at Dental Day Spa of Hawaii and was greeted by Dr. Kim himself. I had submitted my X-rays via the My Medical Vault service and he was able to review them and give me an estimate. The best part? He told me that we would take a look and could coordinate any necessary care and that, if necessary, additional work would be able to be handled ON-SITE! Dr. Kim is an outstanding dentist, and he and his office staff provide concierge-level attention to any and all, including very personalized attention before, during, and after care. After returning home to Alaska, I found that Tony Kim's bill was HALF of what it would have been back home, and he confirmed my care needs as being far less extensive than what had been falsely quoted to me by a local Alaskan dentist (or, should I say, "dental mill"). A dental colleague who looked at my teeth here in Alaska following Tony Kim's work had a hard time identifying which tooth had actually been repaired! That surely must be a reflection on his years of experience in the competitive Southern California market, which can only be a game-changer in the Hawaii market. After years of rarely going to a dentist who was fine, but not too special, I recently chose to visit and meet Dr Kim. I heard about his practice from friends that work as staff in the dental field. Im staying with Dr Kim because of his excellent communication and personal skills, and kind dental care. This is safe and non-toxic dentistry, in a clean and beautiful office, from a personal and relatable person. Its actually nice to visit this place. Good neighborhood, nice building, and pleasant staff. It doesn't matter that he is not in my insurance network, some things are worth paying extra for me - like excellent healthcare. I think Dr K is from California, and he seems to carry a level of detail and perfection that Ive never seen until now. This is exactly what we need here in Hawaii, and im happy i found this place and opened my eyes to a new level of dental office. 5 stars. If youre happy at your current dentist, then great. I was searching for a holistic dentist. I'm SO lucky I found Dr Kim and highly recommend him to anyone who's looking for a safe and effective approach to dentistry. I broke my front tooth in a work related accident. It was such a scary moment to be in pain and have a broken front tooth. Dr Kim was able to fix it and get me out of pain. The tooth looks so great people can't even tell which one I broke. Dr Kim is very professional, kind, quick, courteous and pain free. I'm actually looking for a good/better dentist than the one I live close to (had a bad memory on that place) anyway I have a cracked tooth and it's also where my cavity is. I use to go and put the fillings in but that was back in high school when I was in 9th grade and that was the last time I went cause I hated that dentist. How I was treated and talked down to??? Well I have a cracked tooth and I didn't think anything of it until the toothaches started. I thought it was nothing cause the toothaches hurt only so little and for about a few minutes. Now,it's getting to the point where the pain is a lot worse and it's on going for hours and here I am literally crying and screaming for my life for the pain to subside I already went to the ER last weekend cause I was just into much pain that Saturday night. I got the antibiotics but i finished them already and I'm supposed to be scheduling for a dentist appointment. I'm just having a problem to which one should I go to. I moved to Honolulu 4 years ago and had a great dentist in Berkeley, CA for many many years. Based on a recommendation from our chiropractor, I started seeing Dr. Kim recently. I was having some tooth pain and Dr. Kim determined I had a little decay forming beneath a very old crown. He was able to save the tooth and installed a new crown. He is exceptionally good at explaining what he is doing (and why). He is very meticulous and made absolutely certain that the temporary crown was comfortable and that the permanent crown matched my other teeth and fit perfectly. Soledad (office lead) is very efficient and super nice. Highly recommended. Even though we've moved to Maui, we plan to continue seeing Dr. Kim. read more

Awesome job on my dental implant and sinus lift. I can eat anything I want on the implant and it looks just like a real tooth. I was scared at first because it sounded scary but it didn't hurt and was way easier than I thought. The beautiful and CLEAN office really helped too put me at ease. Being a Dr. Kim's patient for about 10 years until his move to Honolulu, I started missing him already. Dr. Kim is a highly devoted and tireless professional, always looking for better ways to serve his patients. He has passion in his profession: he seems to attend all cosmetic dentistry and dental implant related regional and national conferences, and he is quick to take advantage of the state-of-the-art dental machines and equipments, for example he has used digital x-rays, digital cameras, 3D crown making machines, and maybe more. Recently, Dr. Kim performed a ceramic crown on one of my lower front teeth and a 3-D crown on one of the molars. He was so meticulous about matching the color of the crowns with the neighboring teeth, so I didn't have to worry about it. The cosmetic result, of course, was great. The 3-D crown procedure took only about an hour and I never had to go back to him for any rework on it. He is also very much interested in patients' general health as it is related to dental problems. He is integrating holistic approach into his dental practice. I was involved in vitamin and health food retail business for twelve years, and so I can tell you that Dr. Kim could help you on some dental or related health problems from the holistic point of view. He was the first doctor who led me and my wife to the awareness of our mild suffering from sleep apnea. We followed his instructions and used the sleep apnea device he provided to us and our sleep is much more peaceful and quiet these days. About half a year before he left for Hawaii, Dr. Kim observed in my mouth x-rays something suspected of root canal. I think he could have treated it; however, he sent me to an endodontic specialist, saying that I could be served better by an endodontic specialist.
