Five years later, I came here again at the recommendation of another professional. Here is my experience: Initial consultation with Dr. Kawahara was cold and aloof. She listened to my concerns about receiving poor cleanings in the past from other Maui providers and there was absolutely no emotion, facial expression or any empathy from her while I was talking with her. Post two weeks after my cleaning my teeth felt like they had scum on them and I bought a dental tool kit to scrape my teeth myself. When Stacy, her front desk agent called to explain some insurance issues with me, I told her that I wasn't satisfied with the previous cleaning and they should re-do it. Stacy called me back after checking with Dr. Kawahara and was very stern saying the Dentist agreed to re-do the cleaning and that they would cancel all upcoming cleanings. When asked why? Stacy said that "you are not satisfied with our services." When I objected because I felt like I wanted to give them another try, she kept speaking over me repeating the technical procedure type of cleaning that they previously did vs what I was requesting for the next cleaning. When I tried to interrupt, she kept speaking over me. All I wanted was the dentist to return the phone call like other professionals in her industry do to appease their patients and explain herself. Stacy hung the phone up accusing me of yelling at her, when I was only trying to stop her and have her listen to my requests. Wow, we are a family of four who used to be clients at Smile Suite, we had a change in insurance and moved across island so had to change our primary dentist to someone else. After several years we are now back on this side of the island so I phoned Dr Girard to get my family scheduled back at Smile Suite and was informed by the receptionist that she spoke with the doctor about us returning and that he said "the don't allow for previous clients to return once leaving their practice". What?! Are you serious??? We have been previous, established, paying customers and you won't allow people to return?! What a way to treat past customers of yours, on a small island. No customer service and no aloha. Knowing what I know now I wouldn't return even if you asked us. And don't think he just did this to my family, this is their "policy". I asked if they were "full" and was told "no we aren't full, we are accepting new patients" just not patients who paid them money previously. I'm weird and love going to the dentist for my semi-annual cleanings and check ups. Smile Suite is a step up from my previous dentists and dental office visits. I've been going to them for a year and a half and the service has been consistent, professional and friendly. First off, you enter and have to do a double take to make sure you're entering a dental office and not a spa. It's clean, modern and they've done an excellent job of creating a spa like ambiance. The section dedicated to cleanings is dimly lit, seats are comfortable and they give you a pair of sunglasses to wear while they clean and work on your teeth. They use the latest equipment for cleanings and to x-ray your teeth. This last cleaning was so gentle I almost dozed off. I have not had any surgery or fillings done, so this review is for the regular dental exam, x-rays and routine cleanings. So far, so good and everyone I've recommended to them love Smile Suite as well. Tip- They are busy and their client/patient base has grown significantly, so I hear there's a wait list for new patients. If your schedule is flexible, accept the appointment that's in a few months and express that you would be open to coming in sooner if they have cancellations. I'm so happy I was referred to this dental practice to establish my primary dentist. It was my first time here to get full X-rays, a full dental exam and a teeth cleaning. I had an amazing experience with every one of those steps at Smile Suite and never felt taken advantage of. I feel I can truly trust what Dr. Girard suggests when caring for and maintaining my teeth as he was so thorough with his examinations, going over in detail my X-rays and the un-rushed, very easy to understand communication about everything. He makes me feel very comfortable to ask questions and took his time in explaining everything in detail. I can't explain how much I appreciate that because as a patient I want to feel that I understand everything going on with my mouth and dental health and to know the possible outcomes, preventative measures, etc. Dr. Girard is so kind and knowledgeable when communicating. He is very delicate with the dental tools when examining my teeth and does not rush. I never felt nervous about pain while he was inspecting my teeth. Having your teeth examined is never fun or pleasant but he made this a very pleasant experience for me. I highly suggest coming to this office and making Dr. Girard your primary dentist! He's seriously an amazing dentist who sincerely cares. His staff is just as impressive! She is so respectful and talented with her use of her dental cleaning tools and suction devices. She just feels like the real deal when it comes to a dental hygienist. She does everything right, in the right order, taking her time to get a nice thorough full cleaning done. I feel that no corners were cut with her cleaning because my teeth felt so clean and well polished afterwards. She removed all my stains from drinking coffee and tea. My teeth have never looked so white and felt so clean all around until she worked her magic on me! The office is very new, clean and modern and conveniently located with plenty of parking spots. Very poor customer service. They lost TWO customers because of this. ALL I was asking for was an exam, and a cleaning. I was told they had no appointments until Jan 2020. I explained I didn't want to wait that long and I was told, "Well, if you don't like it, you can go somewhere else". Verbatim! I asked for a doctor to call me back. Spoke to Dr. Gerard. Thought the problem was solved, when literally 10 minutes later, I received a call from the receptionist saying the were cancelling my appointment for an xray and exam on 9-30-19 and given the names of other dental offices! Mind you, I also told them that I had a tooth that was hurting me. Never in my life have I been treated like this at a dental office....Thankfully, I think I may have found an amazing dentist....such poor, poor, poor customer service!! read more

This office is beautiful, very good job in design and upkeep. Went during covid and it was a bit like entering the Matrix. Everyone was fully covered in PPE, including the receptionists. Once you touch something, someone comes behind you to wipe everything down. Pretty impressive especially in the current surge of COVID. Dr. Girard is very nice, quick and thorough. The only thing is, it is SO hard to get any appointments here! You're supposed to get bi-annual cleanings, but the next cleaning appointment I got is nearly nine months away! And the appointment system is something I've never experienced at a dentist before, you can't book a cleaning and check up, it's two different appointments and you've hit the lottery if you can get them on the same day, megabucks if they're close in times! And if you haven't had a check up in a bit, they won't even let you schedule a cleaning appointment! Weirdest thing ever, I've never been to the dentist where I don't get my teeth cleaned before having a check up.... But otherwise, the staff and doctors are great, all very friendly. First off, let me begin by saying I very few write yelp reviews -- but after my experience with Dr. Todd Girard, I felt it was the only right thing to do. My wife and I relocated to Maui in May of 2015 after living in California. As you can imagine, there were many adjustments to be made however, the one that was of special concern to us was finding new medical and dental care. Smile Suite was recommended to me and it has been the most seamless transition of our move. From my first visit, I have felt at ease and very well cared for and your staff could not have been more accommodating. I was seen quickly and the quality of the care and treatment I received was outstanding. Dr. Todd Girard is one of the BEST dentist's in Maui -- not just for people who are VERY fearful of getting dental work done like myself, but also because he is a grade A professional at his craft. I Went into his office and was greeted by a very friendly staff and felt comfortable through the entire process. He knew I had a bad fear so he talked me through the whole thing and made me very comfortable. I had such an excellent experience with him I plan to go back and I look forward to my next appointment! Smile Suite combines professionalism with genuine concern for the patient and all the staff are wonderful. If I could give 0 stars it was better , the worst costumer service ever !! Feel So upset and disrespectful

The first time I met Dr. Girard, I asked him to refill a prescription that my previous dentist on the mainland had prescribed for me. He didn't seem to know the medication, but that day he filled it for me and has been filling it for me for the last 9 months. My husband and I have great insurance that allows us to come and get our teeth cleaned three times a year. When I was in the office on 11/2/18 I asked to refill my prescription. The hygienist went ahead and when I went to pick up the prescription it was only one dose. I called back the office to see if they could please make it so I get multiple doses as once so I don't have to go back as much (like it had been written in the past). This is when I was told they were no longer going to be filling my prescription. I was given no reason except he has exceeded the limit he was going to fill. I am not sure why a dentist would refuse to fill a prescription I take due to canker sores I have gotten my entire life but since he is refusing, my husband and I will find a doctor who cares about taking care of our needs. If you are looking for a dentist I suggest going elsewhere. I have been seeing dentists since I was a child twice a year or more for cleanings and I have never been treated this way. So if you want someone to take care of you do NOT go to Smile Suite! read more

Let me start by saying that I have been to several dentists in the past and have had dentists on the spectrum from bad to good. I had a terrible experience on island at another well known dental office where you feel like a warehouse patient. Meaning mass production, no personalized care, and they just seem to want your money. You won't feel this way at Smile Suite!! I don't even write reviews unless I feel really compelled to... Ok, so when you walk into the Smile Suite it looks like you've walked into a spa. The colors are relaxing tones and they have nice comfortable chairs. The front desk staff is very nice and professional. The bathrooms are nice and clean too. I see Dr. Kawahara and she is the BEST dentist that I have ever gone to. I've been there for the exam, cleaning, and mouth guard fitting. She is extremely knowledgeable and professional. She took her time and asked me if I had any questions before we finished!! And she listens!! I really needed a new night guard for teeth grinding and TMJ but the cost has been a deterrent because it's $400 no matter what dentist I've been to. Dr. Kawahara understands that most people may not prioritize a $400 guard and came up with a different type of custom night guard for $50!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She understands that people from different financial backgrounds can still get the care they need. A lot of dentists seem very greedy and dismiss wanting to hear about your TMJ issues when you don't want to buy the $400 guard, but this doesn't seem to be the case with her. I still ended up getting the $400 guard because thats the one I really wanted, but was really happy to see this $50 option. Don't get the night guards from the pharmacy..those are $40 and don't fit. She was also very professional when I came back for the fitting and provided a lot of education to me as well as her assistant. The dental hygienist I had was the BEST as well. Unfortunately, I can't remember her name. I think it was Ali? But she took her time and I didn't experience ANY pain. She also did not complain about having to clean my wisdom teeth. So many hygienists that I've had in the past complain about cleaning my wisdom teeth because they're hard to reach and don't clean them well because they either don't care or don't know what they're doing. I walked out of the chair with my wisdom teeth squeaky clean here! I just couldn't believe it. I also like the music that they play here because it's upbeat and distracting when you are getting your teeth worked on. I've never gone to Dr. Girard, but he greets you when walking by and seems very nice as well. My husband has been going to his dentist from childhood on the mainland when he visits his family once per year because of the poor dental service he experienced elsewhere on the island. People should know how great this place is! I have had varying experiences with dentists both on and off island in the past-from the greedy, over scheduling, pain causing, fear tactics using to the mediocre/what I thought was good. As such, I've been through my share of dentists and developed a bit of a phobia. This has been changing for me since I've started going to the Smile Suite. The cleanings I've gotten are thorough and gentle. I really feel like the hygienist takes her time and cares about what she does. I finally had my first filling replaced today with Dr. Girard (He'd already kind of won me over by not threatening me with a crown at just about every visit like my last dentist). At my last check up I told him about how this filling-done by a different dentist-was still bothering me. He told me he could make it better. I pulled up today, optimistic but doubtful. I'd heard that promise before. From the moment I sat in the chair, truly, this was a much different experience! Dr. Girard really took the time to administer the numbing medicine in a way that wasn't painful...like at all. That's never happened to me before. He also gave simple updates-"almost done"-and really checked in to make sure I was ok. I really can't thank him enough for a painless and stress free dentist experience! Probably the best dental experience I've had. They have created a really relaxed and spa-like environment! I get dental anxiety and I feel like I chose the right dentist. My dental hygienist was gentle, kind hearted and I experienced no discomfort other than the initial short lived pinch-like pain from the Novocain shots. Dr Girard was friendly, laid back and understanding of my dental anxiety. He gave me great advice to use headphones during dental procedures since a lot of my anxiety stems from the sounds the machines make. All in all, very satisfied with my experience and I will continue to be a patient at this beautiful place. read more

Wow, I m shocked at the good reviews. I am a medical professional and YES I find the customer service ATROCIOUS AND CALLOUSLY HEARTLESS. They don't care. I was called 30 minutes before the appointment I made several weeks prior. They text you death about giving them 24 hour notice hassling if YOU cancel but don't give a damn if THEY cancel on you, or move your appointment. The snotty, fake front desk clerks act like robots and are not, in the least, personable. Dr Girard is out to make a buck. We know Hawaii is expensive but please treat people with respect. It's a crying shame. He'll tell ya that you're teeth are in need of repair to make a dirty dime off ya. Get a second opinion because there's much falsehood here with no rationale professional basis. Their love for their family, team, and patients are easily seen and noticed. It's inspiring to see a husband and wife team doing what they love to serve others. I always have Shanell who does my bi-annual cleaning and she and the rest of the team are sweet and polite. She's constantly making sure I am comfortable wich I really appreciate. One of the things I detest about getting an exray at the dentist is the hard butterfly piece that place inside your mouth against your cheeks... At smile suite they use something else that is way more comfortable and ergonomical. Goodie bag on the way out everytime, with floss, toothpaste, toothbrush, and tounge brush too! Dr G and his staff are amazing.I went in on 9/07/2017 with terrible pain coming from a crown. They took me in with just a few hours notice. I knew The crown was going to have to come off and a root canal done as a major expense. To my amazement he said the only problem was my "bite" needed adjusting. So after a few minutes with a drill (no anesthesia thank goodness) I was out of there and everything is perfect. The cost was only 95 dollars after I was expecting thousands! At my first appointment after xrays Dr Kawahara showed me that I had 2 cavities. I couldn't see any cavities, but I trusted her. When I went back to get fillings, she was 15 minutes late getting back from lunch. Obviously her time was more important than my time. I asked her to show me again where the cavities were in the X-ray. One of them was in the same place she originally showed me, the other one was one tooth away from where she originally showed me, and I couldn't see a cavity, so I told her that wasn't what she showed me before and that I didn't want to spend the money on a filling that I might not need, so she only filled one. When I tried flossing that night, I couldn't get the gloss down to my gum line, so I made an appointment to get it fixed. I arrived on time for my appointment and she was 10 minutes late getting back from lunch this time. I once again felt like her time was more important than mine. Very unprofessional. She then looked at the filling and said "something must have happened after I put in the filling". I told her no, it was like that from the beginning, when I first tried to floss. I felt like she did not want to take responsibility. She had to remove the filling and do it over. I will not go back. read more

From the check in process to the procedure, everything went smooth for me. Dr. Girard is very knowledgeable and thorough. Throughout my tooth extraction, Dr. Girard made sure I was comfortable and also explained step by step what he was doing. Overall, everyone was kind and exemplified the Aloha spirit. After going to another Maui dentist for several years I decided to change dentists--the other place had just one too many things go wrong. I had seen Smile Suite advertised, plus one of the dentist (Dr. K) used to work at the place I used to go to so I knew her and liked her. I was able to get an appointment right away for a problem I was having. I saw Dr. Girard, and he later saw me to put in 2 crowns. He is really gentle and slow putting in the novocain, and it didn't hurt at all. Both he and his assistant kept asking me if I was ok. I had to pay for my first office visit because it was over the number of times my dental insurance allowed. Smile Suite charged me $49 for an office visit, whereas the other place I was going to charged $72! Plus, the estimate for my two crowns at Smile Suite was $1200 less than the other place! The office itself is conveniently located in the Maui Lani shopping center. It is new, clean, and nicely decorated. The front desk staff are friendly and efficient.
