Nightmares on Randolph. The experience with this dentist was deeply disappointing. The building is shiny and new, but that's where the dazzle ends. Their service, care and billing are atrocious. Chanbo also recommends unnecessary treatments; which provides cash flow for the new building, but superfluous, and depleting for you and your family. Unfortunately, the substandard treatment doesn't stop there -- Employees have had to bring lawsuits to be paid for their contracts. I brought my kids here for cleanings, which was my first mistake. The hygienist even attempted to bully me into fluoride treatments which I don't want for my family. My second mistake was allowing Chanbo Sim to provide orthodontic care for my 9 year old. He doesn't personally perform any orthodontic care or personally inspect any orthodontic work -- he has hygienists performing orthodontics. It was a huge red flag for me that he never showed up in the office during ortho appointments. Shortly after the initial treatment, both expanders fell out of my son's mouth. Our new orthodontist said this should never happen and he could have choked. He also added that he didn't need the expanders and doesn't need phase 1 ortho treatment. I should have ran then, but I didn't. I'm currently upset with myself for allowing this to go on, because after they replaced the expanders, they stopped working; when turning the appliance, the pin would just go round and round. I told this to the office and they said indeed, it is still widening his mouth. Anyone with a basic level of understanding would know that if there is no tension on the turn, then it is not expanding his palate. It was at this point that I stopped the care and went to a real orthodontist who revealed that they have heard of issues with this office. Please see the 1 star reviews on Google for this location along with his other location in Merrillville, "Family Dental Care." The reviews show a consistent poor level of care and service. Billing department can't figure out if they have charged you or not and their bill pay system that they had would allow you to pay for your bill and was told that they had issues with the payment system that they had. Come to find out that they sent me to collections and still took the whole amount instead of what I owed! Now again, I got a bill for the same amount that they took out of my check! Such a scam! Even talked to the "billing" department and they confirmed that the amount I owed was less than half before them getting it from my check. read more

Booked my appointment a month in advance, then got a text just 36 hours before saying Smiles couldn't see me. I'd already taken the day off work. If this is how they treat new patients, I'm out. Extremely disappointed. read more

Absolutely incredible facility, staff, and care. My experience was seamless and state of the art. From the medical professionals to the front desk employees- everyone had a smile on their face and genuinely cared about me. Watch your bills too many times they have tried to charge me and people I know for things we didn't do. They will fine you if you don't cancel over 48 hours in advance even though they're not open on Sundays and they just love to make you appointments you never asked for! And they love to text call and email you even though you said no just so they can get you to leave the best reviews for them. I've been trying to escape this place for a year and if I don't show up to the appointments they make on my behalf without my say then they fine me $50 . Their service is trash too. I have to say be wary of businesses that don't tell you that procedures may not be covered by insurance. I went to this establishment in January as my insurance had my dentist out of network and given I wanted the maximum coverage (per MetLife) I chose to go to one of their in network providers. Pricing to me is high comparative to my dentist, by nearly 30-40%, the latest treatment plan I had done at my dentist's office was $1100 less than this office. Get a second opinion if needing more work than your dental insurance covers as going to an in network provider may not be in your best interest. Regardless, the concern for why 3 stars out of 5 left had to do with a dental procedure I had in the office that was not covered by insurance. I went in for a root canal redo due to a severe abscess and the tooth ended up being cracked so they had to do an extraction. The care provided earlier in that week was great and have no issues with the actual care provided that day as far as the procedure went. However during the extraction the DDS placed a bone graft and I was told it was necessary as part of the procedure. Never in my entire dental experience did I have to undergo bone grafting but I was told by multiple staff members of concern for bone loss, which interestingly enough my current dentist has yet to mention. I left the office and on follow up paid a deposit for future care then got the new estimate for care which increased by $2K. I decided at that point given most of the care was going to be out of pocket to go back to my prior dentist. I got my EOB from my dental insurance which showed the extraction done on that care date and that a check was issued. Given all payments from my insurance provider to the DDS had been completed I called to seek reimbursement of the deposit that I had placed given I would no longer be going to this office for care. Imagine my surprise when told my refund was approx $600 less than expected. When I inquired further I was told that the bone graft wasn't covered, that they rarely are, and that it would be paid out of pocket. When inquiring why I wasn't told that this was an elective procedure and would be out of pocket. I was told that it was reviewed and that the treatment plan I signed authorized them to take this out of my deposit. I asked why it wasn't submitted to the insurance and was again told insurance doesn't cover it. I followed up with my insurance company who stated that bone grafts are only covered when deemed dentally necessary and as part of an implant procedure and must be done under prior authorization. I sent two follow up letters to this office asking for the signed treatment plan that stated A: I was aware this was elective and out of pocket and B: Authorizing them to perform such care as the only document that could be provided was a statement that also included a $23.00 charge for Prevident which I had already filled at my local pharmacy and did not receive and if used in conjunction with this procedure unclear why such an exorbitant charge. I finally received an email from their business office indicating that A: They did not have a signed treatment plan and B: They as a courtesy could file the bone graft and seek what insurance would pay even though I educated them on what insurance reported to me. Ultimately I'm out near $600+ for a procedure done as part of an extraction that was deemed not medically/dentally necessary by my insurance provider as it's considered elective when not done as part of an implant with prior authorization. All I could do on my end was file a grievance against this office with my insurance company as the fault was not on the part of my insurance provider. read more

I highly recommend Smiles on Randolph. Their staff is friendly and they are always super helpful. The facilities are extremely clean and stylish which makes for a comfortable experience. I have been coming to Dr. Sim for years. My children love coming to their dental appointments as well and it says alot if a kid is not fearful of the dentist. Listen to your gut. I came to Smiles on Randolph with a plethora of dental woes that seemed to have cropped up very suddenly. Cavities and an infection in a wisdom tooth, as well as wanting to replace a front crown for a better aesthetic. The first dentist that I came in contact with was Dr Weiss. WOW. If you could hear someone's eyes roll, then you might have gone deaf. This was the most unpleasant, downright rude man to be around. Heavy sighs and tongue clicks that indicated his disgust with me was palpable. At a later date when my husband visited, he received the exact same treatment, so I do believe he is that that awful to every patient. My husband stopped in the middle, though (a more bold man than I), to let him know that "No grown man wants to stick his hands inside the mouth of another grown man except for the money. I would be much more inclined to give my money to someone that has a better attitude." He then went elsewhere. My cavities were filled, and I visited an oral surgeon to remove the wisdom tooth. Now on to the front crown. This was purely cosmetic in nature, I wanted it to match its neighbors and be less bulky. This was Dr Chanbo Sim. He checks in at what I consider an extra loud volume. Fine. Perhaps that is his way of conveying "self confidence". He removes the existing crown and places a temporary one. When I came back for the permanent tooths installation, he (loudly) insists that it is a perfect match. While I am laid back in the chair, mouth wide, he then begins the interesting bit. It doesn't fit because of my one slightly crooked bottom tooth. Let me be clear that one of the initial things I had asked was if I should get orthodontics to address some slight shifting. He said he didn't think it was significant enough to do that, though. Now with my mouth open, under lights, he tells me the only thing to do is to file down my crooked tooth. I'm not happy about this. Why can't you alter the fake tooth instead of my real one? He continues (practically pouting) until I relent and agree to the one tooth. Now I get home and what do you know?! The crown is not a perfect match, it is still bulky, and now that one slightly off tooth is absolutely gleaming like it has five arrows pointing at it! And for one more kick, he lied and filed the neighboring tooth as well. Now I have a new found insecurity. Thanks. I came back to address my grievances (having a lovely hygienist agree that my expectations have not been met) and schedule a redo on the crown. By this point I have gotten a second opinion and other professionals agree these are bad practices. But the crown cost $1,000 so I have to go the dentist who did it, that it is insured by. The day comes and I bring my husband to drive so that they can administer gas this time, as I am a mess usually and they think it will help my nerves. Dr Sim goes through the whole gas procedure and numbing, I then open my mouth and he begins yelling. You read that right. Why the heck was I back here, as his work was perfect and he's not touching his Michelangelo level tooth. I then had to (gassed, Novocained, and in a vulnerable position) calmly explain how I wasn't pleased with the result, it was still bulky, that I still thought I needed orthodontics, and how now my bottom teeth being altered was bothering me even more now. He continued to shout at me that it was perfect and basically gaslight me that my lying eyes couldn't possibly see flaw in his work. I remained very calm and did not shout back. I then informed him that I had seen a different dentist and that they agreed with me. He then yelled that I should just go back to then, then, because obviously he wouldn't be able to satisfy me. He pressed that he would just refund me the cost and I agreed. I'm glad I didn't get sucked into his weird power play. I could go on and on but this is running long so I will leave with this: Come to this place only if you are comfortable being treated like you are scum, do not value the actual dental work that is being done, oh and like nerve damage to your tongue (my sense of taste has noticeably diminished immediately after the fillings). In closing, now that I have sought help elsewhere, they have informed me that I am not the first person to come to them from Smiles on Randolph with a story like this. Absolutely would never return here, the wait was incredibly long. I scheduled my appointment during the work day and went on my lunch break, the staff took so long to pull me back I actually had to use some PTO time. The insane wait happened because the staff overbooked my clinician with patients and was rushing her with too many clients in a single day. The staff and owner overbooked my her repeatedly and never paid her the commission due to her. It seems like the staff doesn't care about their patients/clients and definitely didn't care about the staff member I am referring to. Smiles on Randolph management and owner doesn't respect the clients time or the clinicians! They would rather overbook their staff and keep collecting cash than make an acceptable scheduling arrangements. Long story short, stealing wages owed and over working your staff will come back to haunt your business and reputation. Never would I return to SOR or recommend anyone going to their facility. The management and owner value money and themselves more than their own clients and staff members! read more
