**This place is pretty ideal. I just went by myself, and it was a quick little get-away (just slightly west from Orenco, it was easy for me to drive out there) The staff was very friendly and helpful. They helped me get set up, and showed me the map to get orientated with what berries were available to pick. I actually, got a late start when I went out there on a Sunday, and I worried there would be no berries left. I thought they would be heavily-picked over from the weekend, and I would have to work hard, and dig deep into the bushes, or reach really high, but luckily for me, that was not the case. There were many berries that were within reach and pick-able. I also liked that this farm is pesticide free. (There were some bugs around, to be honest, but overall it was well managed) . They have a cute little market, but my favorite part is that you can get a milkshake, and for 50 cents extra you can get fresh lavender added in. I get some of my coolest Christmas ornaments here. Also, some of the coolest 'smalls' for home/kitchen decor - whoever does their curating/ordering does a dang good job - so good that I always end up taking a little bag of something home with me (besides the produce - which is why I tell myself I am going). The folks that run the place are awesome - helpful, but not overly helpful if you know what I mean. Only help me out if I look like I want it. Other than that, acknowledge my existence and then let me shop. Oh, did I say they make a kick ass, I mean, kick ass, milk shake? They do. It is worth what they charge. I just finished a review bitching about a different establishment that charges similar prices for a shake, but this one I praise - cause it's worth it. It's excellent quality ice cream, generous berries (if that's your thang) and as flavorful and rich as a shake can get. Hmmm, what else? Oh, the produce and berries. Like another reviewer, I normally pick my own berries so I hadn't much reason to buy any. But this year, after a shitty deep freeze thaw - I had to break down and buy some. I stopped in here and bought a flat of the sweetest, well picked blackberries and took them home to freeze. Needless to say, only about 1/2 made it to freezer, the rest we devoured. Great location, good stuff and great berries. FYI - They carry some fresh produce - I try and buy only what is grown there - much better prices. Such a fun experience for the whole family! I've taken my family back twice now and each time have had a wonderful experience. I love everything about this place. We got to pick raspberries and blackberries. I love that you can try the berries right off the vine too. Not sure if that is encouraged or not, but hey, you have to make sure you like it first! Also, feeding the animals was just as fun as picking the berries for the whole family. And, we love the store at the end of our visit. So many neat things to look at and enjoy some espresso or ice cream! I highly recommend this for family's or even to take relatives from out of town! Berry fun! read more

Having gone here last year and loving all the berries we picked along with apples and pears, we wanted to go again. Sadly, it was raining. I still made the trek out and perused in the store praying the rain would settle. There are a ton of things to look at related to fruits in the store. Teas, jams, etc. the rain stopped for a bit and we ran out to go picking. They only had apples, pears and grapes available for picking. We decided on a couple apples. We tried the grapes and they had seeds in them so that was a no go. Also, we happened to actually find a few berries. It started raining heavily so we ended our adventure and went back to the store. I also picked up once again their pear butter which is heavenly on a bagel with cream cheese, and this time, the Marion berry jam (no seeds). I tried their sample and it is delish. Because it was raining and cold, we opted out of the berry shakes they make. I love this farm! I just wish they weren't so far out of Portland! read more

Omg... this is a place you should visit! It's absolutely adorable especially if you have little kids. You can pick apples/pears during the season then take a milkshake or a coffee with an ice cream in the shadow! We had an adorable day back in September entertaining our large family who came for a weekend! Thank you people who run this place! Just don't feed animals! This berry farm is the best! Last year we came for the marionberries, which they've cultivated so the vines and berries are SO easy to pick right in front of your face. But they also have currants and gooseberries that were neat to try. This year we've been for strawberries so far, and enjoyed feeding the goats & chickens while we visited. They have a neat store in the barn and the staff are really friendly. The only knock against them is that they didn't have any place to get some tap water for my 3 year old, unless I paid for it or if I drank out of the farm sink. But otherwise, it's a really fun place to visit and we'll be back. read more

This farm is my new favorite! It's close-in and the space is so put together. The kids loved feeding the animals, we could have stayed for hours just doing that. We got chocolate steamers at the cafe and sat outside in their garden. This place is seriously so relaxing and beautiful, I would totally meet my mommy friends here for a playdate. They also have fresh food to purchase for dinner that evening. I 100% recommend this place for families. What a sweet place to spend the day. read more

I have been going to Smith Berry Barn for five years, and have watched it develop into a full service farm stand, gift shop, garden center, and even a good place for snacks, coffee & milkshakes. This is the best place hands down in the area for U pick berries. They are great because they've planted so many varieties that you can visit all summer and they'll have something to pick. Many nights though I just stop by after work for 5 minutes and grab veggies for dinner and berries for snacking. I also buy gifts there and their gift selection is really good, they have a wide variety of things. Smith Berry Barn is a picturesque place and a landmark in the Scholls area. The owners are super friendly and they are business minded, very interested in pleasing their customers. I really like their 'festivals' at different times of the year they have special things going on, like apple or berry sampling plus even other types of food. It's a great place to take kids for pumpkins before Halloween too! read more

Delightful little shop and coffee/milkshake counter with you-pick berry picking, conveniently located to y'all in Beaverton and Tigard. A few highlights... The berries: Smith Berry Barn is no-spray, which means that the berries are great but more challenging to pick than berries at nearby traditional farms. Come early in the respective berry season before the insects beat you to it. The prices: Super reasonable, especially for no-spray. About 25% less than the farms on Sauvie. The shop: Country but not kitschy. Great spot to find gifts for aunts, mother in laws, etc. (and surprise yourself by finding a thing or two for yourself while you're at it). The milkshakes: Do not leave without getting a chocolate lavender milkshake. It's worth the drive out here *just* for the milkshakes. Wander across the street, grab a sandwich, come back to the Barn for your milkshake, and sit on the veranda on a warm afternoon. Finish the day with wine tasting down the road at Ponzi and you have yourself a perfect summer day. read more

Here's another place that I want so desperately to write an awesome review about....but after several visits I just can't. From the outside, the Smith Berry Barn looks wonderful! Quaint, country, homey! I love it! But the rating lies in the details. First, after apple picking at the farm I returned home to find that nearly half of the apples I picked had worms in them. Now, this was only 1 week after their apple festival. The apples should have been good to pick still and I was never warned of any infestation in the apples when I checked into grab my wagon for the picking. But, with this one flaw I wasn't about to walk away from this business. After all, the reason there were worms is due to them not using pesticides, which is why I picked there. I have been inside the shop in the barn several times. I have never, ever been impressed with anything, especially not the prices! They are charging WAY TOO MUCH for everything!!! It is insane! Okay, so still, I am willing to keep giving this place a chance. I continue to return. I buy fresh produce, fruits, and veggies, thinking I must be getting a little deal since most of what I am buying I am getting directly from the grower. Right??? Wrong! I bought 20 lbs of apples and spent a little over $25 for that. A few hours later I stop by Winco (which if you didn't know has a fabulous produce section!)...out of curiosity I stop by the fruit section. And to my shock and dismay, there were apples and pears for .98 a pound. Holy stick a fork in me crap! I just got ripped. It made me mad! Here I was trying to support a local business and they are price gouging people! I didn't feel any better when I saw the prices of the other produce either. All the way around I spent about $10 more for produce from the Smith Berry Barn than I would have if I just went to the local market! And that is with half of my purchased spoiled with worms. Can you say DISAPPOINTED? If I was told up front I would be paying more for their produce at Smith Berry Barn then I would have shopped differently. However, I even asked the young lady working there if I was wrong to assume that their produce prices would be cheaper than the local grocery market, and she told me that they are "just about or near equal to grocery store prices" unless you buy in bulk, in which case you will save money. Seriously, please don't blow smoke out your rear end. If you don't know the answer to a question, ask someone who does, but please do not make stuff up. Lastly, if you are going to post on your website that you open at 10am, and then again post it on a sign in front of your business that you are open at 10AM, then you better be dang sure you ARE OPEN AT 10!! Not 10:15!! Some of us actually plan our days around these things and have other places to go!! Not to mention your parking lot is chained up so you can't even pull into the lot to turn around and go back home, thus requiring people to have to drive around to find a place to pull into to either turn around or sit their car while waiting for someone to drop the chains. As far as berry picking goes, I much rather prefer Rowell Brothers just down the road. Better selection and better prices with no gimmicks to get you in the "door". I'm giving this place two stars only because of the latte I ordered. It tasted like bad coffee. If you want a really good latte, go across the street to South Shore Cafe and order a hemp latte - it's so much better! They are not really in the business of making good coffee/lattes but are more geared toward growing and selling berries - I love how they are a no-spray berry farm! While waiting in line to pay for the latte, a man in front of me had a couple boxes of newly picked berries and they looked fabulous. This was the first time I picked berries since moving to Oregon from California, so I have no other local farms to use as a comparison. Really, what is a bad picking experience? I hope to never find out. The place was easy to spot, the parking lot was surprisingly full for a Tuesday morning, the gal who weighed our containers had a great smile. Most of the berries are labeled. We picked Blueberries and two types of Raspberries. The Blueberry bushes seemed fairly young, and are located beyond the mature Raspberry bushes, far left corner if you are standing in the parking lot. They also have Strawberries, Marion-berries, and many others. Call them the morning of your visit and they will tell you what is ripe. read more

So disappointed in the barn. I have gone back over the years. I specifically checked their policies on masks. I had planned on getting milkshakes as a treat. After a morning of picking berries A lady was standing right in front of the cashier with her mask pulled down. Less than a foot from her. There are no plexiglass screens and the cashier said nothing. Then another woman pulled hers down and nothing was said. I would have just left but we had already ordered. I had three kids with me. They were being as good as they can and all wearing their masks. If you have ever been there you know the inside is small and distancing is tough. The staff seemed not to care at all and the lady without the mask was calling the cashier by her name. read more

I really wanted to take my kids to pick berries so we could make some jam. And also to show the kids how it's "really" done! Not just go to the store and buy em... We came early on a Sat morning, and were glad we did, it was 90 out by 11 that day! Luckily the little store had bottled water and even cold ice cream! They provided the containers, or you can bring your own. The staff is super friendly. Many berries to pick from too. We ended up with 4lbs of Blackberries and 4lbs of Raspberries for under 20 bucks! That's one heck of a deal...and even though the kids pooped put half way thru, we all had lots of fun! I will definitely come back next summer when the berry craving kicks in! read more

When I moved to Scholls in 2001, this establishment was owned by the Smith family. It held a small produce shop inside, the neighborhood kids worked picking fruit in the summer months and had a consignment shop. When they retired, they sold the place to the current owners who took the place to an extravagant level. It's been expanded beyond the farmer and garden market. They have even included garden workshops for the not so green thumb. Their gift shop has some pricey items but if you need a gift quick and you live in Scholls you know that the last minute gift giving won't take you 10 miles into to Tigard or Beaverton. Their coffee bar is also a little pricey but uses quality ingredients. They make terrific espresso shakes for $5. If you're looking for a family outing, this is a wonderful place to visit for all enjoyment. read more

Absolutely wonderful place to visit if you are in the Portland/Hillsboro area, especially if you want to get out in the country a bit. This country store is first and foremost a berry farm, where you can pick-your-own berries. They also have fruits and vegetables for sale, some grown on the property, and the rest from around Oregon. They also have numerous plants for sale, adorable figurines for the yard, and heirloom seeds. Inside, there are all sorts of home goods, jams and jellies, and honey. They also have cute Rifle Paper Co. cards and other gifts, plenty to keep you busy browsing for a while. If you're feeling peckish, you can get a scoop of ice cream or a milkshake. We shared a marionberry shake. It was a little bit tart and tangy, and very satisfying. There's also a patio where you can sit and enjoy your treat, and a restroom on the premises. read more

Plate and Pitchfork experience here was superb! I was lucky enough to be a +1 at this one of a kind venue. Exceeded my expectations! Chef Aaron Barnett from St Jack & Chef Scott Snyder from Levant, along with Tom Monroe from Division Winemaking presented us an amazing meal featuring chicken liver, mussels, bay shrimp, salmon, duck confit, leg of lamb, semolina yogurt cake and wines that cheered them all on. The sun was setting by the time we had our last course, in the middle of a pear orchard. I've never had a better meal...ever. Belly is full, head's a little foggy...memories to hold. We were treated to a tour of this amazing farm as well, by the gracious owner/ operators of Smith Berry Farm. I highly recommend the farm (goats and chickens and all) and the Plate to Pitchfork experience here. Stop by and get some fresh produce. It's well worth the drive from Portland. Delicious berries, beautiful flowers and garden items, and a small store that reminds you of your childhood.

Our first post-covid outing. We love the fact that Smith Berry makes you reserve online for berry picking so they can crowd control. The staff requests that you have masks on, even though you're outside most of the time. Thank you, I really appreciate that. It's easy to head into the farm store to make a quick purchase and forget to don a mask otherwise. They've got a station for washing your hands when you enter, and there is another handwash station when you exit. The staff was also helpful and cheery and we had a great time here. There are iced lattes and ice cream available inside should you like some and there are markers on the floors for you to line up and socially distance. We really found the berry picking area to be kid friendly, the shrubs were quite young and spaced quite far apart so that each "aisle" had ample space. I guess this matters more for the thornier berries. I also just felt safe not feeling cramped for space by other patrons (again, thank you online crowd control system). The place is just gorgeous with all the flowers and the nursery they have. If you'd head into the farm store, you'll see that it's more french boutique than barnyard americana, it's got interesting chocolates, bakeware, and chutneys and jams. We also love that they have a nursery selection of hydrangeas and herbs...I had no idea for instance, that there are half a dozen varieties of thyme and oregano. Why might you not want to come? If you do come, come for the baby goats and chicken (and turkey!), for the chance to get out and get some fresh air, and berries to take home. Do not come for berry pricing. If your goal is value, then check out other berry farms for better pricing. We went to New Seasons to pick up a few items right after and saw that the cost of blueberries were only $3.99 per pint whereas...the teeny handfuls we spent an hour picking cost us $3.50 per pint. I'm sure there are cheaper u-pick farms around but I really think that you come for service, ambiance, and safety infrastructure they have in place. The picnic tables they have out on the lawn surrounded by a garden of flowers and plants I cannot name makes me want to bring a baguette and brie next time to pair with the chutneys they have inside. read more

Fair Yelp readers, you are going to be treated to a softer side of me this morning. I'm not always about late-night binges of hot dogs, Pat Benatar, and Dos Equis. Sometimes, on a mild and cloudless weekend, I like the occasional trip out of town to dirty up my pants legs and pick some berries. Not a euphemism. There's something so methodical about the process. You comb through the leaves and gently tug at the berries that look ripe. If they're ready to go, they fall right into your fingers and you can drop them into your bucket with a satisfying tonk. If they're not ready, they stay on the branch and someone else gets to pick it later. Maybe there's a metaphor for life in there somewhere, but I'm hungover and working on my first cup of coffee. But back to the softer side. Smith Berry Barn is located in the farmlands that are not quite Hillsboro and not quite Beaverton. The crop size can best be described as a sprawl, without all the ugly visions of Southern California cities that usually come to mind when you think of that word. The U-Pick section consists of row after row of whatever is in season. Right now, the Cascade Delight raspberries and a certain breed of blackberry are looking like shiny, bright baubles that appease the magpie in me. A walk out to the not-in-season crop showed the Tayberry, named after the river in Scotland where it was originally bred, and the Marionberry, which always puts me in mind of Marion Barry, that former DC mayor who was arrested for drugs. Small, laminated cards with factoids accompany each berry variety, which appeases the nerd in me. The berry barn also has a chicken pen and a goat pen, and I won't even go into how hard it was not to pick up the baby and take him home to meet The Cat. I also made friends with a preschool-aged girl with an orange bucket and a very confused chicken. They must respond well to the soft side. Beyond the U-Pick activities, you should check out the country store, which puts those Compleat Kitchen stores to shame with its offerings of kitchenware, aprons, teas, and other items slanted towards the hearth master or mistress in every home. Smith Berry Barn also sells plants, flowers, and some mighty good-looking produce, as well as milkshakes and coffee for a post-pick chillout session. We came here over the weekend for berries and had such a blast! The store is so adorable and makes milkshakes with their berries. I highly recommend combining a flavor with lavender! we had a raspberry lavender milkshake and it was phenomenal! The Marionberries are also on point here and was probably my favorite part of the entire thing! Also, the prices are very very reasonable! I can't wait to go back later in the season and pick more berries! This is a perfect spot to bring small fruit-loving children! The farm is just the right size for toddlers (and you don't have to pick the fruit yourself should you not feel like it.) Cannot rave enough about this family owned farm! We were visiting Portland and came on a weekday in late August with our 2 toddlers - everyone had a blast! We had late season raspberries (incredible!), blackberries (never liked them till I had these!), Asian pears, apples, and pears. Everything was delicious. The farm was well maintained, not overcrowded, plenty of fruit to pick from. Staff were friendly and the berry milkshakes were the best we've had. Saw them on Garden Time and heard they had Golden or Yellow Raspberries so thought we would take the time to go and U-Pick - WONT be back! Very disapponting - MOLDY Berries on the cane Went all the way out there to pick Anne Raspberries and the majority of the ones we could get to were moldy! They were irrigating the field so they were a muddy mess and sink holes abound, don't know how many times I sunk and gave up when almost broke something. Spoke to the employees asked if this was when they regularly irrigated and basically got a shrug of the shoulder. Let them know about the sink holes and the danger they could create and got the same response. We wont be back read more

Cute place with a great little shop! There are lots of things to looks at, and it is the nicest/most well put together farm shop I've been to. I got a delicious blackberry lavender milkshake; however I had to strain it when I got home because the seeds were huge, unchewable, and were like tiny little rocks cutting up my mouth with every sip.
