1/4 Dark Baked Fried Lunch-chicken, mac & cheese, collards

recently had knee surgery and just hot my appetite back , but with no one to fix me a home cooked meal. Smith's took care of that need! Everything was delicious-chicken flavorful and juicy, mac nice and creamy, collards with a little kick; maybe a dash of hot sauce? my only regret is that I didn't add a dessert!

10/10 recommend! Must go! Located in Gastonia and it's a non profit organization and Ms. Cheryl is nothing but through what she is doing for these kids are amazing ! But please go try it out! You will not be disappointed!

Looking for a savvy, savory, and satisfying meal then check in at Smith's Soul Food Bistro. Gastonia has a gem right in the heart of their town with not only a great set up but, a team that aims to please. The menu has classic options that are portioned with a now and later serving size. You definitely have enough to take home. The meatloaf has such a rich flavor kind of like royalty. The greens are flavorful in every bite and the Mac ..... yummy!! The chicken quesadillas are melt in your mouth good. While leaving a great meal, we had the pleasure of chatting with the owner and that was a special treat!! She has a heart of gold and passion for passing the "Legacy" on to those who come into her path. Looking forward to seeing this vision unfold for her.

Service is HORRIBLE , I came and ordered 2 plates to-go and the server initially told me 35 min wait time, I wait 40 min outside and when I go back in they tell me that it's going to be an ADDITIONAL 45 Min!!!! And when I FINALLY Get my food half of it is missing!! wouldn't recommend this place to anybody with a sense of taste

My husband and I went here for the 1st time today and it was absolutely delicious!! A little bit of a wait for the food, but that just shows how fresh it's made. Worth the wait and will be coming back to try the macaroni and cheese! (They didn't have any today)

I was looking for some good ol' Southern food and was recommended to check this place out. Turns out, this place was redone in December 2021 by Chef Robert Irvine and will be airing on an episode of Restaurant: Impossible next month! They have a New Orleans vibe with the jazz music playing overhead paired with the gold and black decor. The staff is nice, and the food is great. I had the Fish Sandwich with fries ($10). It came with 2 pieces of fish over bread. While the bread was delicious and the fish well fried, I felt that it needed just a little bit of sauce. I asked for tartar sauce, and once I had that, my meal was complete. I did have a couple bones in my fish, but otherwise, I enjoyed it. In particular, I loved that the fish was lightly breaded (instead of having a thick crusting) and that it was not soaking in oil. It was just right. My fries were good too, well-seasoned. I also had the opportunity to try some fried okra, yams, mac and cheese, breaded wings, and fried ribs (daily special). Out of all the sides, the yams were the best! The wings ($16) were perfectly seasoned and didn't need any sauce. The fried ribs were absolutely delicious ($16). We were also given some cornbread, which was so moist! Cornbread has been hit or miss for me; oftentimes it is too dry and flaky, but not these! My only 2 issues were the speed of service (it wasn't a busy hour but it was a bit slow, though it was nice of the owner to come out and help a couple times), and for some reason, without being made aware, we were charged for Covid. It was not a large amount, but there was no explanation for this. Still, this place is worth a try, and we can't wait to see them on TV!

    Grits after shrimp were gone

My visit to this establishment was very disappointing. I had to wait 15 minutes for someone to take my order after I was told the kitchen was closed even thought they were not supposed to close for another hour and 15 minutes. I ordered the shrimp and grits which is pictured here. It has 6 shrimp and just grits. A little sausage or more shrimp would have mad the dish. The owner is lovely but the service and food need work.

Top Taste Grill: A Masterclass in Jamaican fused southern cuisine…read more If you're looking for a spot that lives up to its name, look no further than Top Taste Grill. This isn't just a quick bite; it's a soul-satisfying experience that brings "Southern Quality" to every container they pack. From the moment you see the vibrant Jamaican-inspired storefront, you know you're in for something special. The Main Events The proteins here are the foundation of a legendary meal, and the variety is staggering: The Oxtails: These are a triumph of slow-cooked perfection. Rich, dark, and swimming in a savory gravy, the meat is incredibly tender and literally pulls away from the bone. The Fried Whiting: This is a gold standard for fried fish. It features a beautiful, crisp batter with a seasoning profile that suggests a deep respect for the craft. It's light, flaky, and served in generous portions. The Brown Stew Chicken: Impeccably juicy and smothered in a deep, complex sauce, this dish offers a perfect balance of savory and semi-sweet notes. The Stew Fish: For those seeking bold flavors, the stew fish is topped with a vibrant medley of sautéed peppers, onions, and carrots, adding a fresh crunch to the succulent, sauce-drenched fish. The Supporting Cast A great soul food spot is often judged by its sides, and Top Taste Grill doesn't miss: Macaroni and Cheese: This is the ultimate comfort side. It features a thick, bubbly layer of baked cheese over perfectly cooked pasta. It's rich and decadent without being overwhelming. Collard Greens: These are a standout. They maintain a firm, meaningful bite--never mushy--and are seasoned with a depth that only comes from a kitchen that knows exactly what it's doing. Yams: Bright, sweet, and tender, these add a perfect touch of sweetness to balance the savory mains. Rice and Peas: A classic Caribbean staple that acts as the perfect vessel for soaking up those incredible gravies from the chicken and oxtails. The Verdict Whether you're grabbing a box of oxtails for a hearty dinner or a crisp whiting plate for a satisfying lunch, the consistency across the menu is remarkable. The portions are substantial, the flavors are bold, and the quality is undeniably "Top-Tier." Must-Order: If it's your first time, you have to get the Collard Greens. It's the ultimate representation of what this grill does best. Its fresh and embodies the care that they use in every dish!

The lightly battered whiting fish was crisp and seasoned just right, paired with tender cabbage and more yams to round it out. Delicious! We were in town and wanted to try something new. Taste of Soul is located in a takeout…read morefood hall. I love that there is seating inside the hall in case you want to hang around and eat. There are also different restaurants in the food hall as well so there is something for everyone ranging from Indian, Thai, and Costa Rican cuisine. Each shop allows you to order from the kiosk and will bring your food out when it is ready. If you place a pick up order it will be in one of the lox boxes waiting on you to pick up. Now to the food! I looked at the menu previously and knew i wanted to try the ribs. I also ordered the mac and cheese and black eyed peas as sides. The meal comes with rice and their vegetable of the day which happened to be collard greens that day. To finish the meal I ordered the housemade hibiscus tea. It took about 10-15 minutes or so for everything to be ready and it was brought out by one of the lovely owners (forgot to grab her name). She was so sweet and came back out to check on me mid meal. Everything was so good. I haven't had ribs in over a decade so that was such a nostalgic taste to me. It had the chargrill taste and everything and that sauce was so good! The "rib" meat had a great taste as well and I enjoyed the meaty texture. The fixins were all really good. The macaroni was nice and seasoned so were black eyed peas, collard greens, and rice. Truly tasted like a plate from an auntie's house. I'm already plotting my next trip to Charlotte so I can make my way back over here. We spotted a handful of vegan spots in the Charlotte area but I am so glad we went with this one.
