Kind of funny, but I started this review 5 years ago and forgot about it. The Mrs. and I drove through SLO this past weekend and was reminded of Smith. Long story, short, back in 2020 I got it in my mind to look at a car for my daughter, then scratched that idea and found one for myself 165 miles away at Smith Volvo in SLO. At the time it was an 18 year old (now 23) Porsche traded in by someone the dealership knew. At least that was the story I was told. It's taking me a long time to write this review. However, during the summer my air-conditioning went out on my XC 90. My local dealer here in Fresno always seems to cater to Range Rover and Jaguar owners. Volvo customers are not treated with the same respect. I reached out to Smith Volvo and worked with David. He was very sympathetic from the start. I was able to have my car towed to San Luis Obispo, and his team found a leak. What's phenomenal about this place is David did not want me to drive the 2 hours without ensuring that the issue was 100% resolved - especially having a toddler. He asked to keep the car for further observation. Not only did they find the initial leak, they discovered freon was coming out of the car which was a MAJOR fix. I did not have to drive there, he made everything convenient for me. I plan to come here for any service as San Luis Obispo is beautiful anyway. But David is awesome! He has absolutely wonderful customer service skills... and truly cares about the Volvo customer. This is my expectation for owning a luxury vehicle as opposed to the nightmare I experienced with my local dealer. I can't wait to meet him in person! read more

My wife's new XC40 started giving us problems just sitting in the driveway at our second home in Cambria, CA. We purchased the vehicle in Pasadena, CA. We had it towed to Smith Volvo for warranty repairs. Mike in the service department contacted my wife and let her know that he was addressing the issue. The vehicle was eventually repaired and tested by the service department but the best part of the experience was the continued communication from Mike who assured my wife that they were taking care of the problem. The detail shop, managed and run by Graham Sigman, saved me over $5000 in body work.. Other body shops had told me the work that I needed done could not be done and that many of the parts that I needed should be replaced. Graham told me otherwise.. The team at Smith Volvo were great, particularly the salesman Brendan and Rob in finance. They gave me an awesome deal on their demo C40 Recharge Ultimate, I didn't feel any pressure, and they were very professional and nice throughout the entire deal. I moved from NY and had trouble getting insurance due to the 14 day waiting period in CA and had to delay delivery. Rob was happy to mail me paperwork and hold the car for me. I ended up sorting out insurance a few days later and picked up the car yesterday. The salesman Brandon is an insensitive brute who abuses/misuses the rare car you're interested in as you watch in horror. Cold start and drive off 1 second later, ...doing a 10 point turn lock to lock on the steering, to turn the car around after pulling in a tight space to wash the car but I did not want it washed, and after the service manager advised him to back it out...searching the car like a thief, moving the seat all the way back and tilting it way back on a 20 year old car, not letting me drive it again when I went to pick it up and much more "turn off" behavior) I went to Smith Volvo to buy a used car I saw online and things went very poorly, in fact I can't recall a car purchasing experience that was more unsettling. The sales manager was extremely rude as well and referenced "Mental illness", presumably on my part. I can't recommend this store. I did not buy the car despite having a cashier's check for the full amount in hand. I don't see how this shop sells any cars. read more

Stopped at service department. Person shows up (do not want to mention the name; it is a company's culture matter even every person should be customer oriented). Mike in Volvo SLO is absolutely superb, and I really appreciated the attentive service provided on my Volvo V60 yesterday. For context I purchased the car some three years ago from Culver Volvo and I live in Santa Barbara, and quickly realized that there was not a local Volvo dealer, not the smartest of decisions, so had been taking the car to the Calabassas dealer until at a moments notice they closed its Volvo franchise. As a result, the closet dealer is Smith Volvo SLO, and hour and half away. I have been their twice now, and the service is simply brilliant. I'm old school, and the issue with the comparative larger dealer groups with their multiple franchise, well you just seem to be a number. By stark contrast, Smith Volvo SLO is a much smaller operation, but one where they value you, and your business. I dropped my car off on Sunday, by 8.05 on Monday morning Mike called me as a courtesy to acknowledge had the car and was proceeding with the service. some three hours later, it was all done, and I collected the same day. Morale of the story, long live these smaller independent dealers. Mike is excellent, knowledgeable and responsive. I really enjoy the Volvo, having Mike and Smith Volvo SLO as the service dealer agent, just makes things that more compelling and reassuring. Each touchpoint (pre-sales, sales, delivery, finance, management) comprised of a tangible high-quality, above board standard that made me feel good about driving 6+ hours round trip to pick up my new XC90. So I decided to drive North to visit Smith Volvo SLO and the difference between the two locations is like night and day. SLO had my car issue fixed within 1.5 hours of arrival. I spoke to David to make my appointment and he was very pleasant on the phone and put me in the schedule. I saw Mike upon arrival and he was very kind and informative. Both David and Mike were exceptional and made sure my car was fixed prior to my departure from their location. This rating is specific to the service department, NOT their sales department who we enjoyed. Service department is terrible. They charge insane fees for "diagnosing" an issue and if there are multiple issues then they charge separately. Last two times we've gone in for service on our 5 year old car somehow we've ended up with new issues within a week after they "fixed" initial issue, but claim the new issues have nothing to do with what they did. Also, how does your evaporator crack on a car that is 5 years old and never been abused or driven hard? Lemon? read more

I recently purchased a 2008 Volvo S80 3.2L for my son and with all used cars, you will need to replace quite a few parts to get it fully road-ready for a new driver. I recently purchased a vehicle from Smith Volvo in San Luis Obispo, while I would say that my experience over all is it two out of five, I will give honorable mention to Sam and Brendon in the used car dealership sales, who were very helpful and patient. Brendan went out of his way to try to make the deal. Unfortunately, the promises made in the purchasing phase were not carried out by coworkers involved in the Smith Volvo dealership. When I test drove the vehicle overall I was very excited to extend an offer for purchase, but a lingering offensive odor kept my family from making a deal on the spot. Brendan went out of his way to do a quick detail of the car and apply the ozone air purifier to remove the smoke and body odor, which did have a marked improvement in the odor. On date of purchase I still asked for a second more though detail be performed to help remove the lingering offensive odor and did hair - I was assured that I would be taken care of and that this would occur at my convenience after the purchase. Shortly after the purchase, 2 days, I made arrangements with the detailing department to shampoo the seats, floor mats and rug in order to get the smells and hair out of my car. I left my car there for the day and upon my return the car had not been shampooed (seats/mats/floor dry)or even wiped down(dirt and grime on seats doors...)or vacuumed (dog hair). Also, even though I expressed that I was not OK with perfumes, I found three "wonder wafers" under my car seat in order to disguise the smell. In this phase, I'm extremely disappointed and hence the overall two out of five stars rating for this dealership. If it weren't for Brandon and Sam this reviewer would give one star. The car purchase made was not a big money-making deal and I'm not sure whether that had anything to do with the end result. I find that a dealership that does not follow through on promises and can lie about the things they perform gives an overall impression of mistrust and makes me wonder what other lies I was told. read more

After ordering parts from a couple of other places and finding out later they either didn't have the part in stock or sent me the wrong one I called smiths Volvo. Why didn't I call them first? After the friendly service I was assured that I would have my part the next day fed ex and it still didn't cost me anymore than the other guys were charging for parts that were going to arrive a month later if ever.... I learned if you want parts call the parts depot and if you want good service call the good service dept. But at smiths they merged the two departments.... how's that for efficiency... If I drove a Chevy I'd still call Smiths Volvo just for good customer service. I think the person I spoke to was Tim, I was so elated I forgot his name but I didn't forget his service. While we drove from LA (3.5 hours), we were able to call ahead and place a hold on two cars we were interested in. A few days before we tried the same thing with another dealership (non-volvo, it was a trade in) and when we arrived they told us the car had "sold". Long story short, the vehicle ended up having a very expensive repair just 6 months after purchasing the car. I had no warranty on the vehicle and went to talk to Brendan about the issue which I was obviously not happy with. Brendan was very understanding and quick to help solve the issue (He called his boss right away to figure out a solution). Great experience trading in our Subaru for a minivan. They stood by what they said via email (as far as pricing and such) and didn't attempt to jerk us around at all. Rob was upfront and casual and it was a no pressure environment. We were able to test drive by ourselves, which made it more comfortable to get a feel for the car. They were very cautious about social distancing and had disinfectant wipes, gloves, and hand sanitizer all over to share and use. Rob sat in his office during the paperwork and we sat in the main lobby where we could still easily talk about what we were signing etc. They were very cautious and safe, yet made the experience personalized as well. Battery was showing low battery. Diagnosis revealed a voltage draw in thermostat. $145 part $700 labor. Service took 2 1/2 hours. So shop fee is $300 per hour. That seems more than excessive. I will be looking for service alternatives for my Volvo in the future read more
