No plastic flowers adorn this cemetery, all bouquets must be real. There is a group of individuals that call themselves "Friends of Grove Hill". They plan work parties and hold training sessions on the restoration of some of the oldest monuments. There is a beautiful little Chapel in the midst of the oldest graves. Grove Hill Cemetery has a user friendly web site, www.grovehillcemetery.net Five stars can easily be awarded such a fine cemetery. Wait! This is a YELP review. You know a real review, by a real consumer, about a real experience! My husband and I came to Grove Hill back in 1997 in search of a location to bury our 13 year old son. It was an unexpected death caused by drowning in a flash flood. The nice representative welcomed us in his office and proceeded to describe locations available for a cluster of family graves. We knew immediately the site for us when we heard the description. "The graves will always be in the front row, slightly away from the road way because there is a partial row in front of the section but to the side of our plots. It's on the very front of the cemetery and overlooks the main roadway and train tracks." (Great for my husband and son who were/are train buffs.) NOW, HERE'S THE PROBLEM. The sales pitch we were told turned out to be totally wrong! The grave is in the same location, the internal road is still in the same location but our son's grave and our future graves are hidden behind a newer set of headstones. Grove Hill for this deceptive sales pitch you get one star. Unfortunately, to average the positive of a nice cemetery with a cemetery location that we now feel stuck with the overall rating cannot exceed two stars.

It's the largest by area and number of burials. Before the era of large municipal parks, it was common for cities to promote a garden cemetery as a green oasis and recreation destination, and Louisville was no exception. Located in the northwest corner is Cave Hill National Cemetery, containing military graves. It was also on the National Register, added in 1998, where we discovered the grave of my partner's great-great-great-grandfather, Joshua Leonard. He was a Union soldier from New York who fought in the Civil War. Notable interred here were Colonel Harland Sanders (founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken) and Muhammad Ali (American professional boxer, activist, and Louisville's native son), to name a few. Upon arrival, we went straight to the main office located in the middle of the cemetery. Friendly staff managed to look up the information of the family member. However, the maps given were confusing and didn't correspond with those at the national cemetery. Stopped a staff member in their vehicle who recommended us to go to the main gate for assistance. With the help of the guard, we managed to locate his grave. Nice hidden gem for those visiting Louisville off the beaten path, which we can recommend.

Not sure how long…read morethey have been doing this but in the month of December there is a memorial tree placed at the entrance to the cemetery for folks to place an ornament on in memory of a deceased love one. We took our own ornaments and placed them on the tree. Since my paternal grandparents are buried there and I had not visited the gravesite since my grandfather died 23 years ago we decided to into the office to get directions to the location of their plot. Ginny was at the information desk and was so very helpful, looking up names of my grandparents as well as other family members who I thought might be buried there. She then showed me on a map where I was headed and gave me specific, detailed printed directions in how to find their plot. She was super nice and helpful and so polite. While in the administration building getting these directions I saw the table of beautiful ornaments the cemetery was providing for folks to place on the memorial tree and they were lovely and supplied at no cost. They did ask that you only take two ornaments. Once we had placed our ornaments on the tree and found my grandparents gravesite we walked around the grounds reminiscing about our deceased love ones. It was a great way to honor them knowing they still live on in our hearts, actions and memories. A good afternoon

We had initially learned about this group after seeing the documentary Facing East (2019), which details the very sad state of affairs at this cemetery. We were touched by the amount of committed volunteers who show up here and stories of what brought them to this place. We were also inspired due to the large amount of neglected veterans graves and felt this would be a way to honor those who served. From the spring season through autumn, volunteers typically descend on the property on most Sundays 10 AM to 1 PM to mow, weed eat, pick up brush and debris, trim trees, and clean headstones. The grounds for Eastern Cemetery was purchased by two Methodist Episcopal churches and used for burials as early as 1844. The facility hosted Louisville's first crematoriums. Unfortunately, in 1989, a whistleblower called attention to the fact that some graves purchased by families had been reused. As such, the cemetery has fallen into repair. Maintenance of the facility is currently provided by veterans and volunteer groups. Even with that, the cemetery is worth a visit. Emplo told me I had to have the funeral at their chapel and I had to buy the headstone from them. Fortunately, my sister in law told me to call another place. I called Newcomer and they told me only thing Memorial Garden has to do is the actual burial. We went with Newcomer. They were half the price and we had a wonderful service. Do not let this establishment play on your emotions. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I have been coming tot he zoo for over 30 years and been a membership owner a majority of these years and until this last trip o had no idea this old gravesite existed at all. If you go to where the addax and bongo park exhibit is you go around the curve and and walk towards the open grass area where there is a pond and some seating. Just a few feet beyond that is this tiny grave yard that someone upkeeps (maybe the zoo since they bought all the land around it). Overall a very cool and interesting find that has me pondering all kinds of questions. Like if this is your family and you want to pay respects do you have to pay admission prices? That would be weird. However it is also kinda cool to be able to say that your grave site is hidden inside one of North America largest and most popular zoos.
