Food was perfect. Came piping hot and was made perfectly. Very tasty and large portions for the money. Staff are very friendly, very helpful, and will bend over backwards to accommodate allergies. The dining room could use a more modern update, as its seats are seriously dated. The staff are always on the floor doing something to keep busy, which in turn doesn't make for great ambiance. The managers, are seated in their office the entire time. This seems pretty unfair to me, and I can only hope the hardworking staff make a fair wage. The music is not suited to the type of dining experience the restaurant tries to create. Pop music is blasting over the speakers when it should be something nice and calm, like jazz. Smitty's is well known for it's 'all day breakfast'. If you're looking for a breakfast date or if you're looking to grab an egg benedict any time of the day, Smitty's is the place to go! If however, you are looking for a cheap place to eat....you may want to keep looking. It is incredibly expensive compared to most other places and well let's admit, eggs are eggs. Smitty's make your typical breakfast's. My favourite is the bacon and egg breakfast. It consists of 2 pieces of bacon (small pieces), eggs (any style), hash browns (mom's are better), and toast (that is usually cold). My boyfriend and I usually have a bill around $30 for the 2 of us to eat. It's not usually my first breakfast choice because of the cost. read more

Came here for a seminar in a room towards the back of the restaurant. It was surprisingly large and spacious with high ceilings, completely sealed off from the frequently noisy rest of the restaurant. You could probably hold quite a variety of functions in the space, and you have the convenience of the large menu of Smitty's for flexibility. This was my first visit to Smitty's, a Canadian family restaurant with all-day breakfast. I am not a fan of family restaurants. I find they have predictable menus, so-so food and often children making noise. With that said, all-day breakfast and predictably are often desirable traits for many people. This location is outside city centre and in a plaza with a big box store nearby, a Swiss Chalet and a Chinese restaurant two doors down. The layout is odd as one has to enter, make a right turn and a U-turn to be seated in the main aisle. Past that the table is adorned with a whole bunch of Jams and the menu is full of breakfast staples, burgers, sandwiches and what I ordered: fish and chips. I had one piece of fish, but the menu offers two or three pieces as well. The waitress asked whether I want it breaded or battered and the latter was the option for me. The fish was fine and the batter was light, which works for me. the fries were stringy which is fine and tasty, but quite difficult to pick up with a fork. The tartar sauce came in a packet and was fine. My water was refilled once, one quality check was done and everything was going well until it was time to leave and it became difficult to grab the waitress' attention. There was a hostess and a waitress serving the whole dining area and they must have been running ragged. That took a while. The prices are average to high for the food and the plaza is as charmless as any other, but quite honestly it is not a bad place for the type of menu. Why is it so difficult to keep a coffee cup full at this place. It's worse than Cora's for sure when it comes to getting a coffee. I walked in here, seated right away to a sticky table and sticky booth seat. I mean super syrup sticky. My server did a jazz hands jump from the side over to our table and said "HI!!!", it's TOO EARLY IN THE MORNING FOR JAZZ HANDS!!!!! Ordered a coffee and eggs benny along with one pancake. When I picked up my coffee the saucer stuck to the cup, I looked at my friend and said "Cheers!!!". We both tried for a picture but then the saucer fell to the table and made an unholy racket. The whole place stared at me. Ok, the food SUCKSSSSSSS! I mean super sucks. My hollandaise sauce was congealed and gross and too savoury, like thick vinegar. The "maple" sausage tasted like licking a green tree air freshener from the mirror of your car. Not maple more like chemically added pine flavour. The pancake was like something you'd get at McD's, and no amount of Syrup can fix that. They have I got two types of ketchup but I strongly suspect they are both from the same barrel out back. I'm still pissed about the coffee man... just come around once every 15 mins and even that would be good. This whole place needs a hosing down and new management. I often compare eating at Smitty's to eating in an elementary school cafeteria, or a camp dining hall. As you can probably imagine, this does not bode well for the dining experience. Smitty's specialty is breakfast food (my favorite) but sadly every time I've eaten here I've been very disappointed. It seems like all the food here has been mass produced, there isn't the feeling that your meal is special and made to order, and this is how I'm reminded of being fed like a child. The other thing that Smitty's has working against it is how busy it can get during brunch hours, especially on the weekend. The whole dining experience in my opinion was rushed, and leaves the pokey diner feeling like they're being rushed out the door. If you are looking for a quick bite, it can be alright if the dining room is slow. If you plan to go on the weekend during "rush hours" be prepared for frustration. Hot Hint: Smitty's is currently celebrating they're 50th anniversary and are offering a promotion on their website for a $5000 dollar prize. (You can buy a lot of undercooked pancakes with that!) read more

I've gone to Smitty's before - not just this location but other locations as well. I've told myself once and I guess I'm a glutton for punshiment: breakfast is the only thing decent here. I went and ordered the taco salad - mostly because the last time I had it the bowl that it was served in was made out of tortilla - not any more apparently. I should've asked before ordering. =( Got my salad, and it was so-so - nothing great but not absolutely horrible - all for the low low price of $14. They served the salad as an ordinary salad (lettuce, tomatoes) and ground beef on top, with tortillas on the side. Apparently on the menu it was listed as being spicy - not sure who made that mistake, but this salad was far from spicy (or flavourful for that matter). read more

All day breakfast? Hello! Smitty's is one of those classic go-to's for breaky. Their breakfasts are great! On a weekend you can expect to wait for a table for a few minutes, but the staff are very prompt at finding you a place. An the Eggs Benny? Very, very scrumptious! I have eaten of of their.. what I all "Everything but Breakfast menu" as well.. And well, I haven't really ever enjoyed it. So my advice, stick to breakfast. I don't have a problem with prices. What I like about the Smitty's brand is the "home style comfort" food. This location mostly delivers on that promise though I will agree with others that it's not quite as good as the Martello Road location. To be fair, I've only been here for breakfast/brunch and most of the times I've been here were very busy days. Though when isn't brunch busy? I will say that I've found the service to be fairly quick. Servers are usually kind and helpful. Though the fact that I usually eat here with my (very adorable) niece may help with that. One area where this location excels over Martello Road is that it just seems quieter. Even on busy days, it doesn't feel as full or loud. That's a selling point. Don't get me wrong; it can still be noisy but it's not as bad as Martello. Parking is, of course, also much easier (but transit is not so great). Their menu can actually be fairly diverse with options for gluten-free, "lighter/senior fare," and a kid's menu. Their kitchen can mix it up quite a bit and substitutions are usually okay. read more

I'll keep this review as short as my visit to this restaurant. I've been to Smitty's before (the one in Dartmouth though) and their food is always good. I can't imagine this location would be much different, though we never got to eat... ...since we were never served. Please note that it was not that busy. It took about five minutes to be seated after we walked in. Then we received our menus, weren't asked if we wanted a drink, and nobody came back to see us for nearly 15 minutes. At 11am, in a restaurant where it wasn't busy, I just thought that was too long. Two other people came in after we were seated and were immediately brought to a table and asked if they wanted anything. When somebody finally came it wasn't to take our order, it was to tell us they would do so in a moment. Another 5 minutes later, we were out of time and had to simply leave. read more

Smitty's is always a favourite of my not-father-in-law when we head out for breakfast-for-dinner. Their combinations of eggs and other breakfast items are generally consistent and well-presented. Other menu items can be iffy; again, my not-FIL has had their fish cakes and loved them, and my boyfriend says good things about their hamburger steak. I, on the other hand, have been disappointed with their hamburgers and their club sandwich. Bottom line: go for the eggs, head elsewhere for lunch or dinner. read more

Have eaten at this location dozens of times over the years (and other locations just as often). I don't consider myself a huge fan of 'family restaurants' in general, because I find the atmosphere generally boring and there may be loud children nearby. But when one wants predictability, come here. This location can have line-ups on the weekend (definitely on days like Mother's Day), but often I have gotten a table immediately during regular times of the year. It has a section to your right and a section to your left upon entering, and each has at least a dozen tables. Overall it must hold over 100 people. I have only ever eaten off their breakfast menu, at times when hungover, at times when with my parents who are fussier eaters and I hesitate to bring them to places that have a more diverse menu. Service is always consistently straight-forward here, generally quite friendly. I don't ever recall a long wait for food, coffee is always in the servers' hands to pour for you the second you sit down. Their omelets, skillets, waffles and versions of eggs benedict have always been delicious and very filling. I often get the Western Skillet (onions, peppers, hollandaise sauce and replace the sausage with cheese). The Texas toast is always fresh and thick and I love it. Their hash browns I think are frozen, but still tasty. Their milkshakes are too filling but great. My partner is not a big fan of the place. He tried some kind of chicken club wrap on our last visit and said it was very bland. I keep saying I want to try other lunch or dinner items on the menu because there are a lot that I'm sure I would like, but I always come back to the breakfast menu every time. And this is close to 20 yrs eating at Smitty's overall. July 2017: still eat breakfast here on occasion because I am always satisfied with it, although you pay a bit more here than at other restaurants for the same quantity of food I find. Tried their potato skins on a recent afternoon visit with my parents and found them ok. They had a lot of bacon and taco beef, but not a lot of cheese and were well done (I prefer food further away from the burnt side), but they weren't terrible. read more

I can only say one thing - PRICES. Diners are great, their food is okay. But I'd advise only going to this place if you want to feel like you're being robbed. Everything on their damn menu is $4-5 over priced. I went in with my boyfriend Sunday, Feb 8th at 1:30pm for breakfast and we each had a breakfast skillet and a side order of hashbrowns - no drinks. Our bill was FORTY BUCKS. Insane. Each skillet was $14. (My shredded cheese wasn't melted at all and our toast was RAW slices of bread. The hashbrowns were tasty though.) Yes, they give a decent portion, however thats how every breakfast place is and should be. I can go to many other places for the same portion size and not pay more than $25 for two people, including the tip. All these chains are the same - they rob you blind and the food isn't anything special. Never going back. Sorry but the food wasn't THAT amazing lol I'll head over to the Ardmore Tea Room on Quinpool for an $8 hungry mans breakfast and get even more food on my plate than Smitty's skillet. We waited one early afternoon to get in. I wasn't very hungry but wanted something - I looked at salad and then ended up getting perogies, which were still $8 for a few on a bed of lettuce. They have your standard "salt and pepper" items (meaning basic food, some lacking in flavor) but at a decent price with fast and efficient service. I try to avoid writing bad reviews. However this time something must be shared. My husband and I went to Smitty's in Clayton Park. A rather borish looking breakfast joint. The menu had a nice few interesting options but nothing really original. I found the prices for what they were offering overpriced. I ordered the Ukrainian Breakfast skillet. The menu described the meal as 8 Cheddar and potato perogies, Farm sausage, 3 scrambled eggs with onion and a dollop of sour cream and grated cheese. What I received was 7 deep fried, hard, greasy perogies, really salty, glutinous sausage, barely any egg and it tasted like it came from a container not a chicken. Way too much green onion and the sour cream came in a sealed container on the side.The cheese was sweaty and not melted, It had no flavor and the texture was unappealing. The skillet was not in a skillet but a soup bowl. 2 coffees and a Ukrainian skillet came to $27.00 with tax. You have to be kidding me right? Nope. They served this disgusting mix of food and charged me as if I received something spectacular! It was insulting to have thsi brought to my table then charge outrageously for what I received. I have never had deep fried Perogies before, and I hope I never have to endure that again. I would have turn the food back, I was just so hungry. I regret eating it now as my stomach revolts. There are so many great Breakfast places in the city. This is not one of them. I will not be going back. read more

The staff are general great, with the exception of when it's busy. Seems like the staff are either too busy or uninterested to be there... but it shows. Do you know what? I like Smitty's,I only ever been there for breakfast, and every time the food, taste like the last, and its always what I want. I love Pancakes and theirs are how pancakes should be! I love the strawberry syrup, it's made with real strawberries, which I can't find any O.T.C. so I can't have it at home and their atmosphere is what I expect from a kid friendly, elderly appealing restaurant, noise and the smell of coffee! I spent the morning at the hospital waiting for a friend and grabbed a coffee on the way out. My friend had medical tests done and had not been able to eat for hours so we stopped at Smitty's for a late breakfast. While being seated at our table I was told I would have to chug my coffee, drink it outside, or throw it out. If my friend had not have been so hungry I would have left immediately. I can understand if I was not a paying customer but I spent $20 on their overpriced and underwhelming food. Smitty's, you have lost a repeat customer over a $2 coffee. read more

Before leaving my wife for a week on a trip to Sydney NS, she and I had brunch.I had the Western skillet and she had the Texas skillet. After the meal, I departed for Sydney, NS. When she called me around 4 in the morning, I discovered that like me she was also suffering the awful symptoms of food poisoning (vomiting, runs, , abdominal discomfort) . In hindsight,I should have cast a more critical eye at my our skillet meals when they arrived at our table. The meals had characteristics of food that had been prepared earlier and had been microwaved before serving ( ie hollandaise sauce had a slight skin,items were bound together, dry crust on meat). I will never eat at a Smitty's again and strongly recommend you stay well clear of this restaurant. read more

I have been to Smitty's in Clayton Park a few times and the experience was horrific almost every time. As quite a few have mentioned their prices are ludicrous; extremely expensive for what turns out to be run of the mill food in small portions. Unless you're eating breakfast the vegetarian options are so paltry you'd be better off going to McDonalds or Burger King as they would probably have more options. A lot of franchise restaurants are making their menus vegetarian friendly because there is so much demand for it but Smitty's has their menu stuck in the dark ages. I'm not sure if she is the manager or a supervisor but there is a woman who works there who is constantly screaming at the servers. It's unnerving how out in the open she does this. Incredibly nice with the customers only to turn around and treat the staff like vermin. It makes the whole dining experience feel incredibly dirty. The one silver lining is the servers are always incredibly friendly, will go out of your way to help you out and get you what you need. I'd say go further down the road and choose some place different. read more

I used to love this place until me and 25 other adults wanted to have breakfast there until the food goes we asked for some toast to eat with the jam and pb they provide they wanted to charge us 1$ for each toast so the 2$ toast bag they want us to pay 20 times for it. It is hard to believe that you can ruin a Western sandwich but Smitty's managed to do it, not once but twice. The first one I ordered had just a few threads of ham and was so thin, it was almost like paper. I sent it back asking for some ham the next time. It was no better, in fact probably worse. The soup served with it was over salted. I will never eat at another Smitty's. Perhaps if your thing is something less than mediocrity you may enjoy it but if you are looking for decent food there are any number of better choices. read more
