Service sucked. Waited a long time for our drinks and our food to be ordered not delivered. Glasses were dirty and the coffee was wayyyy to hot!! Food was strange. Deep fried french fries for home fries?? Plus seemed like it came from the bottom of the basket, all short crunchy nuggets. Over easy eggs one was broke and other over cooked. Ham deli slices as your side ham? For the price i expected much better food and service. On the plus side bathroom was ok. Very disappointed in this experience. read more

I like supporting Community businesses and I try to do my best and this was one of the businesses that I frequented quite often until I seen the chef smoking outside.. came in and did not wash his hands and I have not been back since.. ... This place is awesome! Great food, service, very clean and so friendly! Our meal was the same for us both. We had the steak and eggs and the size was huge, the over easy eggs the best I've seen or had, but the real must have was their potatoes with an incredible seasoning. You really must go and try this great restaurant. read more

Had breakfast with for the first time with my friends and we very displeased with the service. Food was ok. French fries with breakfast? What is that? Two of us had the eggs benedict and the other one omelette with toast. Server was lazy and was not trained by the owner. Asked for refills of coffee and she did not return. Brought the food with no cuterly and had to ask for it. Also when someone ask for something extra let them know how much it cost. Plus it was cold in having to sit by the front door and too small of a place. Wont't be back. read more

Kind of a greasy spoon. Food tossed onto plate. Home fries were huge and cold. Not impressed.

Tucked away off my usual beaten track, Nena's has been quietly serving old fashioned, blue collar breakfasts for the past few years to north end Dartmouth and those like myself willing to make a trip there. I'm a shameless fan of breakfast foods, and have an added respect for a place with an all day breakfast, so with Nena's specifically being an all day breakfast joint, they get some extra points. Stopping by after a night shift to kill time before an early appointment, the small restaurant was empty except for a couple locals having coffee, and the lone staffer on duty. It's nothing fancy - a narrow layout with a counter, semi-open kitchen and walls painted in their yellow motif. It was, however, noticeably cool, which was probably great for the cook, but not so great for everyone else, and I left my coat on the whole time I was there. The menu is pretty lean, well figuratively anyway, with about 15 breakfast options and half that for lunch items. There's combinations of your various big breakfast items and other typical ones like French toast and pancakes, and Maritimer-favourite fish cakes. Choosing one of the big breakfast-type of meals would have been the best way to see how well they did things here, but their breakfast "poutine" was too tempting. With house-made homefries, bacon, sausage and cheddar covered in hollandaise, and an egg on top, its siren song of gluttony and saturated fats was too much for me to resist. Wanting to try out their house baked beans, I tacked on a side order. The food came in quick order since I was the only one eating, and what a pile it was. My plate of food looked like eggs Benedict on steroids, with my poached egg and a veritable sea of hollandaise covering a mound of homefries and meat. I cannot over emphasize how much hollandaise there was. I tried to not thick about the sheer volume of it, lest my heart immediately seize up like Wile E Coyote falling after realizing that after several steps that he had run off the edge of a cliff. I don't have hollandaise nearly enough, so I can't speak to the quality of this one with much expertise. It wasn't gritty so it may no have been a from-mix one, and had a pleasant, lemony tang. It was definitely thinner than I like a hollandaise to be though, and a thick, velvety sauce would have clung to the food much better. Nena's homefries are on the small side of the Homefries Spectrum, though not as small as the likes of McCain's hashbrowns. The crisp bits of potato stood up nicely to the deluge of hollandaise, although the chopped up bits of bacon and sausage mostly got lost in it, and I felt like their presence was not particularly abundant. That said, everything combined for a fairly tasty hot mess. I would have ordered some toast to sop up the leftover hollandaise, but a side of toast is a shocking $2 here. That might fly at a downtown location that makes its own bread, but that doesn't jive with this location's overhead costs and the bread they likely use. No thanks. The bowl of beans, while small, was mighty. I was worried about them initially as their sauce seemed more translucent than the typical tomato- and/or molasses-based sauces, but the worries were forgotten after the first bite. Maple-y and tender, these were some solid beans. The OJ the have here are the sad bottles of Fairlee. Nena's is slinging affordable grub that might not be award winning, but sure can hit the spot. **Cash only** read more

Tried this place recently at the recommendation of a friend that got some hangover food delivered and said it was good. Got Eggs Benedict and a breakfast sandwich. I felt bad for the server as they were the greeter, seater, server, handled the cash, took Uber Eats/Skip orders and handed them over. Definitely too much for one person. It was a bit slow, but not too bad. A second person helping would drastically help this. The eggs Benedict came hard but we ordered medium, not a huge deal. Hollandaise was decent. Fries were very oily tasting and a bit too salty. Breakfast sandwich was good, classic. I left and had to change my clothes and shower when I got home as I smelled strongly of deep fryer oil. Overall, it was okay. Would potentially order delivery but probably wouldn't sit in again due to the deep fryer smell. Server was very nice and apologetic for the wait times. read more

Slected this place from yelp and was not disappointed. The service was great from the small chat about the choices to how we were spending the day (2 days before Christmas) The breakfast was cooked as we ordered. I was so excited to hear an all day breakfast place was opening in Dartmouth - this is so my jam. I've been to Nena's a couple times now and have been delighted both times. A friend and I popped in for brunch last weekend. I crave eggs benny for supper all the time, so this was going to be my eggs benny test run. I was not disappointed. The eggs were perfectly poached, the hollandaise was tasty and the home fries were just right. My friend and I wanted to also try the pancakes, so we split a side of one chocolate chip pancake for $1.70. They forgot to put chocolate chips in the batter and put them on top instead. A happy accident as the chocolate chips melted into the butter we spread on top. So good. I dropped in after work one day this week to try pancakes and bacon for supper. Another hit! I went with plain pancakes this time and they were so good, as was the bacon. Breakfast is my favourite meal, and having it readily available at all times is both amazing and oh so dangerous. It's a small spot, but the space is maximized. Clean and modern, it's going to be a great addition to the neighborhood. Service was friendly, and they even threw in a free dessert to go as I was paying for my pancakes and bacon. Two issues are holding back the 5th star. It's cash only, which is a huge problem for me. There is an ATM next door which helps a bit. But I hear it won't be cash only forever. Also, on my first visit, the server was cleaning the other tables with a very strong-smelling cleaning product. The smell was very distracting and took away from the flavour of the food. It might be time to switch to unscented products. I'll be back. Often. read more

My friends and I walked into Nena's and were immediately greeted by the owner and the waitress. This l'il joint opened a week ago, and their menus and menu boards haven't arrived yet, so our options were written on the white boards at the front. There are a bunch of different meaty combos, some pancakes (with ice cream or seasonal fruit if you like), a couple breakfast sandwiches, and lots of eggs. So far, there're no vegan options, but apparently the waitress' mom's gonna provide some gluten-free baked goods, and soon they'll be serving green and herbal tea. Our food was served in a Goldilocksian amount of time- not suspiciously quick, and not too slow. Everyone's eggs were cooked to their specification, and most pleasing of all, the homefries were delicious. My brother's request for cheese on his eggs benny amused the chef to no end, but he came through deliciously, with a delightful touch of dill on his order. Our only complaint was that the beans were a little too mapley-sweet. The staff of this new 40-seater was super nice, taking the time to ask where we'd heard of the restaurant, where we were from, how we liked the food. I'm sure I'll enjoy it even more as they add some healthier options, and we'll definitely be back to check up on 'em. It's pretty dope to have a breakfast place in this part of Dartmouth, and they seem to be genuinely eager to meet the neighbourhood, and to meet the needs of their customers. read more

I really, really wanted to give this place another chance. Walked in two weekends ago when it was hot & humid both inside & outside. I have to point out, they have an a/c unit which was installed after they opened but does not appear to have functioned in years. There were two tables of patrons, and one guy sitting at the bar. Two people working the kitchen, one person serving. It appears there was a recent paint job on the walls, but the restaurant was still filthy. The server made eye contact once and then looked away. My husband used the washroom and came back and said it was dirty. I looked over at the cook, saw him wipe the sweat off his forehead and then reach down and cut someone's toast with his bare hands. The hands he just used to wipe his sweaty forehead. I had seen enough. We got up and left. Nena's - we really wanted you to work out, but I won't do it again. read more

Hubby & I finally got around to giving this place a try today now I want to go every day! Interior was clean, the two staff on were friendly and attentive without being intrusive, food came quick (though, we were the only two in there at this time), and it's dirt cheap! That being said, the food was delicious & the portions were not skimpy at all. For example, I ordered chocolate chip pancakes. You get three for $5.95 & they were massive, I finished about half of them before grudgingly sweeping them onto the hubby's plate because I was going to explode. For me it was the perfect amount of chocolate chip for the pancakes but I also don't use syrup for that type so if you do it may be too much. (Too much chocolate, pfft). The hubby got some sort of big breakfast thing, came with two eggs, two toast, 3 bacon slices (maybe two, can't remember), two sausages, home fries and maple beans. He also got a side order of a single pancake which he regretted after seeing the size of it, and realizing he's be eating at least one of mine, lol. I don't eat pork but those sausages looked delicious perfectly browned, and his eggs were perfectly done. It always surprises me how many times an over-easy egg is mucked up, but not here. I loved the home fries, but since I rarely eat a deep fried potato maybe that was just a rare treat because they pretty much looked like chopped up french fries The only downfall for me was that there is no debit, but that's pretty easily fixed by the bank machine next door. And that's really just a personal thing because I rarely carry cash. All in all, I cannot wait to go back & try more things off the menu. read more

Nena's Breakfast House - Chocolate chip pancakes, oh my yum - Breakfast & Brunch Near Me - Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

After all the other positive reviews I decided to take myself out here. I ordered pancakes and bacon. The interior is charming and well lit. My bacon was perfectly cooked. Crispy without being bark and not greasy at all. My pancakes were massive! I really didn't need the last one. Haha. The coffee was good - I drink my coffee black so a good cup of coffee is hard to come by. The cook and only waitress were in and out of the shop a lot. It didn't affect me but a couple ladies ended up waiting a couple minutes to pay. If I had got one of the specials it would have been cheaper. But $11 isn't too bad for a custom meal. I'll definitely be going back. read more

Went here on a Saturday morning and it was good. Be aware it's cash only and the suggestion is there's an ATM next door. Yup at $5 a withdrawal not a good idea. Service was a bit slow, non smiling waiter who didn't have much sense of humour. The tables are a bit close together. The first table we tried there was a huge man sitting behind me and I couldn't even pull my chair out so luckily we were able to move to another table. No A/C working so it was a little warm in the restaurant. The food was very good. I had the eggs benny and my wife had the omelette. Home fries were good. The hollandaise sauce was yummy and it made for a filling breakfast. Not a bad spot for a hearty breakfast. read more

Last reviewed here four years ago as a vegetarian in Clayton Park. Now I am a meat eater who lives a 5 minute walk away. I stopped in for breakfast on a cloudy Monday in September and there were only a couple of other regular customers there, with one of the men very friendly and offered to top off my coffee for me. LOL He didn't seem to work there, but was comfortable enough to do that, which I like. I tried the Scambioli wrap (w salsa, scrambled eggs, cheese, choice of meat (bacon), peppers, mushrooms, onions) with home fries and toast. It looked like a reasonable portion size (not too big) but I was stuffed from it anyway and barely about to finish. Nothing fancy here, but this wrap I was pleased with for probably $12-ish. See no prices online. One older gentlemen was working and took him maybe 5 minutes to make me my order. I wish they accepted debit, but I did have cash in my wallet that day, hence going there. read more

I went to Nena's a couple of years ago and really liked it, so recently went for brunch with two friends. The prices are still good and there are lots of diner food options, particularly breakfast, which is served all day. It's a smaller, traditional diner with a couple of tables along the window and the rest along the wall. There's one cook just on the other side of the counter and there was one server during a regular brunch time. Unfortunately, this visit was really disappointing. The cook sounded like he was in a terrible mood from comments we overheard and I think it was reflected in my meal. The homefries & bacon were good (tiny chunks of potatoes with spices - hope you like salt!), but the cheese pancakes I got were just undercooked enough that some bites were okay and some were gross. Everyone else seemed to have a good meal (grilled cheese, big breakfast). FYI: Cheese pancakes are not served with syrup or butter. In a pinch, raspberry jam makes a good topping. ;) (I'm sure if I had asked they would have brought some.) As far as customer service, our server was really friendly and came back to offer to refill our coffees and water twice - always appreciated as someone who drinks a lot! Nena's is CASH ONLY, so be prepared! Overall, I love diners and most of our party enjoyed their meals, so I'm planning to give Nena's another try, though probably not the cheese pancakes. read more

The best breakfast place. The best breakfast place. The best breakfast place. The best breakfast place. It's also one of Dartmouth's nicer secrets. Me and my gf have been going there for years. We love the omelette and usually load our table with all sorts of wonderful sides. The staff are wonderful, friendly and diligent. And in my experience, some places require a mixture of pleading, prayer and ritualistic sacrifices to Baphomet; Mystery of Mysteries; the goat headed Lord God of Silver, Opposites and breakfast beverages, to get my coffee refilled. While the staff @ Nena's has a sixth sense on when I need a top off. The only flaw is that they're cash only. It can be a little bit of a put off, I know but trust me, it's well worth the trouble. Anyway, delicious food and great staff, what's not to love? read more

Food was good until there was hair in the eggs of my breakfast poutine, ordered extra sausage on the side, when they took my plate back they took that too (didn't have to) and didn't bring my whole order back. Why, yes, Yelp rating system, I am indeed a fan of Nena's. And it's mostly for their cheese pancakes. But I'll get to that. Sometimes I feel like expectations need to be managed. This is one of those times. While I'm a fan of this place, I don't want people thinking that a 4-star review equals a high end or fancy place. This diner is very grounded and realistic. The vibe is very "small town diner" and that works just fine for me. The staff are friendly, welcoming, and helpful. The interior is simple (almost spartan but in a good way). The food: Well, I've only had a few things but the real draw here for me is the cheese pancakes. The story (as I've been told) is that they were a typo in the very first menu order but people kept asking for them so they added them to their lineup. And they are so good. And so simple! I've made them at home but there's something extra nice about theirs. I've gone with others including friends and my parents and everyone's enjoyed it. I appreciate the simplicity of the menu - great for older people who don't want a fancy breakfast. And the food may be "simple" but it's delicious and that's what matters most. read more

I had any early morning so, with the extra time, I thought I'd treat myself to breakfast. One of my favourite things is a long, leisurely breakfast over the morning paper. It's something I don't get to do often, but I love it. With that in mind I decided to try somewhere new, and close to my office. I did a quick Yelp search and saw Nena's had some good reviews so I headed over. I was the only one there! It was lovely! The place is clean, modern, and had a lovely granite counter that I quickly took over with my paper, after ordering the special (two eggs, any style with 3 bacon and toast). I got a nice glass of cold milk and my breakfast was out in minutes. It was delicious. My scrambled eggs were perfect. Bacon was crisp but not over-done. It was also not greasy, yay! The toast was great and the milk super cold. It was excellent! About half way through my breakfast, an older couple came in and sat at a table behind me. The lovely lady who was serving me, I assume she may be The Nena...maybe?, knew what they wanted an brought over their coffee to start. I love a place with regulars! All told, my bill was only $8. Breakfast was excellent, service was fast and friendly and I've now found a new, delicious breakfast place! read more

Fantastic! I am beyond excited that there is a place to get eggs Benedict at any time of day in Dartmouth. I didn't expect Nena's to be so lovely inside. The sketchy strip it's located in is far, far from the bright, clean, inviting interior. The staff was friendly and attentive, and everything was served quickly and perfectly. There aren't many vegetarian options, but they offered extra hash browns on the plate without meat, which was a nice touch. The main problem is that now that I've been here once, I'll want to go every weekend. And in the morning for their big $5 breakfast. And to get takeout on my way home from work. Oh, and to try their cheesecake. read more

After hearing lots about Nena's on twitter I was excited to check it out, and it did not disappoint. The location is a little odd in a but the kinda grubby outside does not match the bright clean inside. I love an late afternoon breakfast and Neena's did not disappoint, the bacon was crispy but not over cooked and the eggs were perfect (yayy for no runny yokes), The server was friendly and even the cook came out to check on us. My favourite part of breakfast was not a topical breakfast option no bake cheese-cake which was creamy and delicious and tasted like more. read more

Their all day breakfast wasn't extraordinarily good or terrifyingly bad either. It was ok food, in an ok atmosphere in a not-so-great part of town. I'd eat there again if I was in the neighbourhood, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to get there. read more

Went to Nena's Breakfast House this morning and am thrilled that the North End of Dartmouth has such a wonderful little "greasy spoon". The food reminds me of my mom's Sunday Breakfast, bacon, sausage, potatoes and eggs. It's a quaint little place with a ton of great energy. Nena's was staffed with laid back, down to earth people and the atmosphere was relaxing. Nena's is a hop, skip & a jump from my place so I will definitely be back. Those of you unfamiliar with the neighbourhood may think it's a "bad part of town", it's not, Northend Dartmouth has it's good & bad, but we can't all live in gated communities and I will take this diverse neighbourhood over houses that look exactly the same...anyday. Pleasant St Diner is a great choice after waiting here for 30mins for someone to take your order and realizing is just not gonna happen.

This place is open early! Just what I needed after flying the red-eye into Halifax. We pulled up to an unassuming storefront, and were greeted by a brusque woman who waved us to a seat. We nearly had the place to ourselves, and it is a touch on the small side, so that was good. The woman came to take our order pretty quickly. In my sleep deprived state, I numbly ordered the Early Bird Special for $5. Despite the NO SUBSTITUTIONS printed clearly under the special, I asked if I could add a sausage to that. She said sure, why not? How about for an extra $1? Well, who can argue with that price? THe woman went back behind the counter to the sunny grill area, and promptly began to cook our food! This must be a one-woman show, I surmised. Maybe not too busy here, then. Well, my assumptions were soon to be proven wrong. Our food came out very quickly, and another woman had appeared, clearly the usual waitress. And not a moment too soon, and people began trickling in, filling the small seating area. Some were greeted by name, clearly regulars. My meal was good for the money, with nice just-crispy-but-not-too-crispy bacon, eggs just as I had asked, and a decent amount of sides. Not too much food, not too little. The sausages were a touch on the greasy side, and I really could've skipped them, maybe in favour of more bacon! We left happy and not too much out of pocket, just as the day, and the seating area, were beginning to heat up. read more

Finally tried this place out today - kicking myself for not having done so when I still lived in NS. Eggs: perfect; Bacon: mine was soft and Don's was crispy, as we'd ordered it (and it's real bacon); Home fries: best I've ever had; Sausage: perfectly cooked; Toast: mmm...bread! Speedy, friendly service and great prices (cash only). Atmosphere is cozy. Conclusion: way better than Cora's. Fantastic value! read more

Great food. Amazing breakfast menu. Hello early bird special!! The prices are fantastic as well. I liked how the cook (not sure if he's still there) would always have a piece of bacon for my dog.
