EXCELLENT SERVICE! Smitty's removed a very large (+20ft) Juniper bush from the backyard of a new home we recently moved into. I sent this company an on-line request after seeing the great reviews on Yelp and Google. They promptly (same day) sent an email for further information and I was able to book a FREE estimate 2 days later. The woman who provided the estimate was perfectly on time, very professional and provided great detail on the service and what to expect. Plus the price was excellent! Smitty's booked the date for work 1 week later and I did not need to be home. The yard looks great, there was no debris left in my yard of side walk leading to the front gate. We had two 40 year old pine trees which died due to canker. We tried to save them for years, but they finally gave up the ghost. We previously used another tree service, but they had gone out of business, so we found Smitty's and hired them based on the nice ratings we found. They sent two guys with a large chipper and a monster high reach crane, and in less than two hours, the 100 foot tall pines were down and chipped. They did a nice clean up of the debris and were courteous and professional. Hopefully we won't need them again, but if we do, we won't hesitate. read more

We've had Smitty's out a few times over the past few years, and each time has been great. The first time, we needed a huge Silver Maple assessed. They came out for an estimate and then trimmed and elevated the canopy within a few days. The next time, they took down two pines and an over-zealous trash plant. One of the trees was above a utility line and they took great care while stump-grinding. The tree in our yard would have required a cherry-picker, but they advised me that I could save some $$ if I took down a section of fence so they could move in different equipment. I did that, they completed the job, and I ended up saving a good deal of money. I will continue using Smitty's until we are outside of their range of service. read more

Took over a month to have them come out and then the day comes only to see a no show. Then I asked about other trees they missed on the first survey and they said they need to schedule another estimator to come out before trimming the original ordered services. No level of Customer Service and no priority to get the order rescheduled. read more

Terrible service all around by Sandy and Bernadine. Prices are incredible high ($700 for 5 hostas and some rocks on 5ft square if that!) and they don't stand by their product. Tree removal ridiculously priced as well. Better off with John's Tree Service if you're in their service area. One of the hostas looked terrible when it was planted last year and Sandy told us to wait and if it didn't look better she'd replace it this year. Now it looks awful and guess what?? They won't replace it because it's past the "warranty." And we've used them for decades! I'm sure they'll respond to this review with some line about how they can't do it for everyone and the plant looked fine 3 months ago (it didn't) so not their problem now...where's the customer service in that? Bernadine told us "you gotta do what you gotta do," so save your time and money and take your business elsewhere. read more

Contacted Smitty's for a quote on tree removal and trimming back of another tree that adjoining neighbor was complaining about. Owner responded with an on-site visit and quote within hours. Was very pleasant, accommodating, and professional. Not surprised because this company was top-notch according to all the inquiries I made about them before I called. Estimator provided complete details on what work needed to be done to complete the job to my expectations. Price quoted was most fair and reasonable of all the other tree service/arborists I had out for estimates. Smitty's mailed to my home copies of current license and current insurance policy on their workers and Company for over one million dollars to protect me and my neighbor's property. Four man/two truck crew showed up to do the work. crew leader identified self and members and provided identification as Smitty's employees. Showed up exactly on day and time as promised by office staff person. Proceeded to perform work required expeditiously and safely/professionally. Checked with me periodically to verify that work was proceeding as I had requested and to my complete satisfaction. Removed all debris; raked everything up in the work area; clean as a whistle; no damage to anything. Left the work area clean and tidy. Based on my watching them work, I knew this would be the case. I contacted several tree services regarding the many mulberry trees that had taken over my yard. People didn't get back to me, or they wanted me to meet with them during work hours for an estimate. Smitty's said "no problem" and sent someone over to advise on my entire corner lot (at my request). Chaz called me and went over the property explaining what 'weed trees' were and how the look of the property could be improved and opened up. He sent over a detailed map and estimate that clearly explained the work to be done and where (and what) trees would be removed. I explained that i was in a bit a hurry as fall was approaching and I had other work that was dependent on the tree removal. No one else could give me a commitment, but Smitty's obliged and got me on their work schedule in short order. It snowed right after and made it difficult to locate the stumps that needed to be ground down. The crew missed some and I called Smittty's to let them know. They sent a project manager over - Sandy, and he brought a crew with the original work order map to locate all the stumps and grind them down. Really pleasant company to deal with! Do not use Smitty's to plant a new tree!!!! We paid Smitty's $725 to plant a new, young tree in our backyard. We showed the planting crew the sprinkler we would be using to water the tree. They approved the sprinkler and told us to run it every other day for half an hour on the tree. Since the tree was planted, we had a lot of rain, and we also used the sprinkler on the tree as instructed. Well, the tree died anyway. Smitty's came out and looked at the tree and said it was our fault, and we did not water the tree enough. They absolutely insisted we were not following their instructions, which was not true. They said the planting of a new tree would cost us $688. You can imagine, we are not going to fork over that amount of money to get another tree from them and possibly have it die on us. Wow! This company has fallen far and fast. I have used them in the past on liked them, but this last project was a disaster. The misquoted me, lied about, yelled at me for it, blamed me for it and tried to jack up the price to make up for it. The job took 12 weeks to complete - never found out the truth about why. Phone calls went unreturned. When finally competed in an unsatisfactory fashion, They asked for more more to finish the project. The next time I need a tree service. I'm looking elsewhere. read more

This company along with Com Ed were involved in a tree removal and power line disconnect today a block away from my home. The grid we are on was without power for 10 hours. I got no Notice from the tree service or power company prior. How unprofessional as to both companies. What's my compensation for inconvenience. Oh I know nothing. Lol. read more

Smitty's was contracted to grind down a tree stump in my backyard. They arrived and completed the work, but when they arrived they did not ring the bell to let us know they were starting or when they were finished. We realized the next day that we had no power to our garage, and determined that they had severed the electrical line that provides power to the garage. Upon calling, they immediately stated that they are not responsible and didn't offer any resolution even though they were at fault. They tried to explain that since the City of Chicago did not mark the lines they assumed there was no issue. If there were no markings, why not follow up to be sure? How am I as a homeowner supposed to know where electrical lines run underground? If they are professionals they should make every effort to make sure that no damage is done. It should be made clear that customers may need someone to come out and have lines marked if the city will only mark lines that they are responsible for. So now we are stuck paying to repair an electrical line that was damaged by them. If you decide to go with this tree service, ask lots of questions, they will use the contract you sign to wiggle out of responsibility. They could have offered some form of compensation or a higher level of concern, but we got neither. Just a bill. read more

I had a couple big trees out behind my garage taking up a lot of valuable space, aside from being a general nuisance. I called Smitty's and they came out a couple days later. Martine checked out the trees and gave me an estimate in just a few minutes. For the job, the price was very fair and I agreed. Done in about 10 minutes. Martine and his crew came that week and had the area completely cleared out in about 3 - 4 hours. And when I say cleared out, I mean the area was clean down to the dirt. The guys worked very hard and I was impressed with their professionalism. I had my two young kids around and they were friendly with them. You could just tell that this was a group of good, family men. All in all, I appreciated the professional, diligent hard work of the crew that came to remove the trees from my back yard. We needed a couple 15-20 foot evergreens chipped and taken away along with the stumps. Estimate was timely, professional, and free. Sending two small trees through a chipper takes ten minutes. And another few minutes to grind a stump. The estimate was almost $700.00. I though the deal was too good to be true and I would have felt bad for not giving the company more money for 30 minutes of work. I would have thought all of the work and labor I requested would cost well over $1,000.00. My children felt like eating this month, so I decicided to cut up the trees and bundle them myself. read more

Called this business and customer service person asked me service I needed. She took my name and number. This was the week of August 5th. In a few days, received a call that someone would be out to assess limb trimming. The person came out after a few days and assessed the job and quoted me a price. On the 16 of August a two truck crew arrived and we walked through what was to be done. The crew completed the work in a timely manner. Did a quality professional job. Crew cleaned up back yard and parts of driveway where debris was. The Chief of the crew and his supporting staff were polite and professional. They were the first to respond when we were quoting the removal of some trees, unfortunately, their pricing was WAY off. They were more than double the average quote and just over 3 times more than the service we ended up using. If I could give this place 0 stars i would, the estimator called me yesterday gave me a price of 750, then i got home and the proposal was for double of what he said. I asked if he was sure and he claimed he was going to be the new owner. Called the number back today, no answer, then i get another call back from another estimator which happened to have a northbrook number as well, i feel they should have figured out proper numbers before calling with a verbal estimate! One tree taken out and other was suppose to be trimmed down so it would never hit the house. When then came to do the trees naturally she did not understand what trimmed back meant. Also when they grounded out the trunk they left all the wood chips in the place where the old tree was, they never cleaned it up. Also put huge divots all over the lawn and did not repair it. paid over 2200.00 I would NOT let them do any work ever again. Smitty's was contracted by the Village of Oak Lawn to trim parkway trees. They did a horrible job! They were supposedly trimming the trees to maintain the long term health and stability of the trees, but their nonsense cuts have probably actually caused damage to the trees. Many trees have the ends of branches randomly chopped off, for no reason, including one in front of my house. The many jagged, uneven cuts will open the trees to bugs and disease. Obviously, there are no arborists working for or supervising this project. Smitty's and the Village of Oak Lawn should be ashamed...if I could deduct the portion of my taxes that paid for this mess, I would do it in a heartbeat! read more

The work is fantastic. Great crews of hard working guys who respect your property. If you can get past the one female estimator (SS) who's seriously hardcore and not pleasant, the work is professional. We've used Smitty's a few times. This last time the estimator in question came out to do the estimate - first time we dealt with her. Nearly killed the transaction. The crew definitely defer to her ( via phone) so she's in an important position of some sort (my guess would be nepotism) but customer relations is a course she never took according to my husband. Her hardcore attitude cost the company a star. As a note to SS, you know, when a return customer calls you to discuss further business, you act nice. We have enough of dealing with large corporate entities like Comcast to wreak havoc with our stress levels. Your crew makes you and saves you honey! You could learn from them.
