Used to be a wonderful, safe and friendly spot! I want to make it clear that I am not reviewing…read morethis way in reflection of the bar itself, or other bartenders. It's a great hangout where "everyone knows your name," however, some people just should not be in a position of "power" if they are going to let their personal life, jealously and insecurities get in the way of their work... I was a regular here for a long time, as well as my husband was, but management has become increasingly unprofessional and, to be frank, unstable. The manager treats this establishment like her personal living room rather than a professional business. She regularly uses her position to settle personal scores, including banning people and '86ing' loyal, high-spending customers based on personal whims and private grudges rather than actual conduct. It is incredibly disappointing to see a local spot run this way. It creates an uncomfortable, toxic atmosphere where the 'vibe' depends entirely on the manager's personal mood or who she is currently upset with outside of work hours. It is lousy business practice and even worse customer service to regularly bait patrons and then use professional standing to retaliate against them. Even after letting an overcharge of around $100 slip until I noticed it and brought it up... The attitude remained. If you aren't in the 'inner circle,' or if she decides she has a personal grievance with you, expect to be treated with hostility. It's a shame because the bar itself is amazing and staffed with fun, great bartenders, but the current leadership is a liability to the business. Has been so and will likely get worse... There are plenty of other establishments in the area where you can spend your money without the high-school-level drama and unprofessionalism. Save yourself the headache and go somewhere that actually values its patrons.

A bit kitschy in the decor but pleasant, spacious and very nice. The service was extraordinarily friendly, attentive and helpful. We felt like family were waiting on us. As we got menus right away there's a good variety of choices. Since the essence of the restaurant is Maltese I was particularly intrigued as I know nothing of that cuisine. We started with a cup of the soup of the day, a Tuscan bean soup, that was delightful. It was full of beans and fresh vegetables in a hearty soup base. Although a few choices in the salads and sandwiches sounded appealing I instead chose the Lamb Maltese pasta. On a bed of farfalle (bowtie) pasta it comes with lamb pieces and a slightly spicy red sauce. All very delicious and I found it to be a very tasty dish. The only downside was the lamb chunks were not the usual, long and oddly sized, plus very chewy. Overall it didn't really diminish the dish. While we all were quite content and full our server brought out an incredible array of amazing looking desserts that would wow anyone. Unfortunately there just wasn't an appetite left for it. However, I will remember that for next time. I will definitely go back to try other things. This is a wonderful place for a pleasant meal.

I was with a family group celebrating a university graduation and we had checked out of our lodging spot, so I was on the hunt for a quiet place to have the call. After checking on a couple of other options, I walked into the National Bar. Success! Not only was it lightly populated at 1:00 on a Monday afternoon, but the atmosphere was oozing historic charm. It was just a pleasant place to be, let alone for what I was trying to accomplish. The bartender served me a tall glass of pineapple juice, which was delicious. I sat at a table in the larger part of the bar area and was getting connected to my call. At the last minute the client postponed so my careful planning to find the right spot was for naught. However, I enjoyed sipping my juice and soaking up the ambiance of the space. Dear Hubby ended up wandering in and finding me and we both sat for a spell I was able to check my email and catch up on anything immediate, which thankfully was minimal. It was a great place to take a break from wandering Broad Street, while still absorbing the charm of Nevada City. I'd certainly plan to stop in here again when visiting this special town.

The owner cares deeply about both the pub and her customers, and the wait staff is always attentive and friendly. Super nice all around. The FOOD is way better than we expected for a pub. Everything we've tried is delicious--but I particularly have to recommend the bread putting. It's PHENOMENAL. This is definitely a low key, fun, local spot. Unassuming, no pretentiousness, great spot to grab a bit to eat and a few drinks.

After our table mates were served we sat for almost 45 minutes before we were notified they lost our order AND the special we order had sold out. Yet, even after they told us they were out of chicken they continued to serve the special to the table next to us. After we selected something else from the menu another 20 minutes passed before we were served. The CA Cobb salad was about as big as a side plate and hardly any chicken and the hamburger was overcooked and WAY over seasoned. 2 hours from walking in the door to getting served. They tried to make amends by comping our meal..I understand restaurants can run out of food but when you "run out" you serve the people who put their order in 30 minutes before the latecomers are served. The event was good but there is EXTREMELY limited parking. The interior was hot as it didn't seem like the AC was working at first. Bottom line- it's nice to support small businesses but this one needs some serious schooling in restaurant management.
