Additionally, my order was cancelled, and I was given no reason. Just drive up and order, you get to stay in your car, it's easy. I have no idea why, but most BBQ in Alaska is average...at best. Ok, so BBQ is not my 1st choice to eat. I'll go to a place that has fries, and that's why we went to Smokehouse BBQ (Dimond location) last night. Also i always trust when Andrew H gives somewhere a good review, as he has high standards, so another reason to try Smokehouse. I really hope to be able to improve my somewhat lukewarm 3 star review. And it's for a couple of reason that it's only 3 stars. We ordered from the drive-thru, and service was good and quick - 5 stars for that. I ordered brisket sandwich with a side of fries, he ordered just brisket, with 2 sides. So i was kind of daunted when i opened my food, to see this humongous sandwich. Normally I'm happy to see a lot of food, and will usually save half for later, for Netflix and Chilling purposes. However, it was a super wet sandwich, very saucy, and the bread was really soggy. It was too big to really get hold of, but i did manage to get it halved. There was no knives and forks or napkins, so it just got WAY messy in the car. And i found the meat too fatty for my taste - i have a really big horror of soft squishy fat. If you crisp it up, i can get it down, but if there is the slightest hint of jiggle to the fat - i feel very nauseated. Maybe i made a bad choice with brisket. I will choose something different for my next visit and there will definitely be one, because the flavour was good. I enjoyed husbands beans. Husband enjoyed his, and he was fortunate because i carry around a portable cutlery set, otherwise he was eating a pile of brisket and beans with his fingers. Also spreading butter on his cornbread is a problem without cutlery. This is why I'm deducting stars - no napkins, no forks, or knives, and my sandwich being soggy and fatty. I also can't really give high stars to the fries, they were very salty. I'm known for my love of salty food. There was too much even for me. I've ate here a few times and each time the food was fantastic! The pork is juicy and the brisket is Smokey and tender! Their originally bbq sauce looks like it's made with the drippings and is rich, with a little kick. The spicy bbq is very spicy. Could really taste the Tabasco or the hot sauce they used to make it. Potato salad is seasoned Perfectly and has great texture between the creamy potatoes and crispy onions/celery. I moved back to anchorage in May. Kept thinking I would get around to trying this place. It's amazing!! I had a pulled bbq sandwich with original sauce. Have had the food here several times, all of them have been thru farmers markets not at their location on Debarr. Most recently was Sunday July 19th at the Spenard market. They had their standard menu with everything from pulled pork sandwich(which I got) turkey legs, cowboy fries, etc. In addition to a pulled pork sandwich with cheese sauce we got the brisket sandwich and mini cowboy fries. I wish the meat had been warmer on my sandwich but overall it was pretty good. The sauce was kinda sweet and a little watery. The cowboy fries were good and fresh (a guy was chopping potatoes in front of us) the lady at the register was a little rude. They take Apple Pay (she said no then another lady said yes) they had a sign saying to pay exact change or use a card. The last two times we've ordered here we went with the "Last Frontier Pack" (it's definitely the most economical for a family, with adding some veg tonight and buns to make sandwiches with the pork tomorrow, we have enough for dinner leftovers tomorrow) The chicken is fall off the bone, moist and delicious and is my fave. We really enjoy their tangy sauce and ask for extra. We were nervous at first to order because of some of the reviews but I think ordering the family style type option vs individual plates with things flowing over container avoids the sauces and oils mixing and over powering things. The guy that dealt with our order today was even careful to fulfill my request for the leanest rack of ribs he had because of my two kids with autism and their sensory stuff. They hate fatty meat leaving me to pick things apart to avoid meltdowns. The ribs we got though are super meaty with a great level of smoke, tender, not fatty. I decided to get dinner here earlier since I was burned out on leftovers and Hot Pockets for the last couple of days. Smokehouse BBQ is a small drive-thru stand located on the corner of Boniface and Debarr right next to the Shell gas station. There is a small seating area with tables by the road for the nice weather but customers usually drive up and place their order at the window. The owner is a friendly guy who has a couple of large grills for barbecuing meats visible behind the stand. I ordered the Combination Plate with Pulled Pork and Beef Brisket along with a side of Potato Salad and Sweet Baked Beans. The pulled pork was delicious, but being from North Carolina, I would've preferred some red pepper vinegar dipping sauce for added flavor instead of regular BBQ sauce. The brisket was outstanding probably the best I've had since moving here from North Carolina for school back in 2014. The owner served a couple of large slices that had the end pieces with the fat remaining on it. This may not appeal to everyone, but as a huge fan of NC BBQ, this is where the juicy flavor comes from and how beef brisket is meant to be enjoyed. The accompanying sides were a mixed bag. The potato salad was lacking in flavor and needed more salt. The baked beans on the other hand were outstanding with that sweet tanginess and a great complement for the pork and brisket. Other side items worth mentioning include the Pineapple Coleslaw and the Smokey Brisket Chili (delicious...this is where a lot of the brisket end pieces go if they don't serve this on their platters). Another item I ordered from a previous visit was their Cowboy Fries (pulled pork, cheese, and either mild or spicy BBQ sauce.....a guilty pleasure for me especially during football season). Some of the other items worth trying out as well include the Reindeer Dog, Half or Full Rack of Baby Back Ribs (the mild or spicy BBQ sauce definitely stands out for this item), the Smoked Tom Turkey Leg (a ginormous Fred Flintstone-size and exactly how you would get it at the AK State Fair), and their Smoked Chicken. They also specialize in catering for parties, picnics, or wedding receptions. A much-needed food stand in the east end of Anchorage that specializes in BBQ where most places in that part of town that have BBQ are usually in sports bars or casual dining franchises like Applebee's. read more

Okay, for Alaska, bbq up North, this is the better of the bbq joints. This review is a combination of mine and my hubby's experience since I'm not a meat eater. Their original bbq is a bit sweet but also has a tiny spicy kick, their spicy is, well spicier and tasty as well. My husband prefers this bbq place over any other in town so far and I must agree. Albeit we just arrived from the south (Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee) and the south knows their BBQ, it's all greasy no matter where you go! That's southern food for you. Coleslaw- it's good, fresh and not soggy. Baked beans- on the sweet side Beef Brisket- holy portions! They give you more than enough! Pretty solid BBQ in Alaska. The Smokehouse is a tiny little shack located on the east side of Anchorage. The most popular dish is the pulled brisket plate (brisket, mashed potatoes, etc.). The brisket really is delicious. I ordered the large order and was bursting at the seams afterwards. I also tried my friend's pulled pork and it too was very good. There are some benches to sit on and eat, but all in all, you're probably better off taking the food to go home, unless you want to stare at a traffic intersection. The prices are....Alaskan....expensive. I always struggle with the fact that food is so expensive here in Alaska -- even for a tiny little shack with virtually no overhead. They must make pretty solid profit here. All in all, if you have the utmost craving for bbq at 61 degrees north of the equator, this is a great option. I probably won't be coming back all that often, because when I go out to eat I want to go out to eat (sit down, server, etc.). I went to the drive thru on Debarr and ordered one brisket plate. The meat was extremely fatty and I had to discard at least half of it. There was no smoke flavor and no seasoning whatsoever and the texture of the meat was like overcooked pot roast. The bbq sauce served separately was OK. The coleslaw was horrible--dry, brown cabbage with no dressing so I threw that away as well. The 1/3 cup of beans were prepared simply but they were passable. The cornbread was very good. My order was taken right away and prepared right away. I was charged $18.75 for a brisket plate with two sides. My choice of sides were potato salad and brisket chili. I drove back to the hotel almost drooling .. This food smelled sooo good. In to my room I go and open up the to-go plate to find food literally floating in GREASE. Not just the meat but the potato salad too. Reference the picture I posted for proof. The potato salad was hot and surrounded by a moat of grease. It had a very tangy sour taste to it. One bite was all I could stomach. The brisket chili was equally as bad. It was a paste of nastiness. Tasted and looked old. The beans were mush and there was no meat that I could find. The brisket was cubed and not sliced which some places do. It was soft and mushy but dry as could be. I couldn't tell the difference between sauce and the grease. The good news is that they included a tiny wedge of cornbread that was sweet and delicious. And to think that I let them keep the change as a tip... If only I knew then what I know now.
