I have known one of the workers at the store for ~20 years (she was not in the store yesterday) and enjoy chatting with her when I come to shop. However, yesterday was very different. I was racially profiled by one of the employees I had not seen before. When I entered the store I specially asked for help finding a goodbye card for a friend. The employee took me to the section where I did find a lovely card. Unbeknownst to me, she was standing nearby. I went to the register to pay, gave my phone number for rewards. Thanked her and then remembered I forgot to purchase wrapping paper. I asked the employee where the wrapping paper section was located, because things are always rearranged in the store. She pointed me in the direction at the back of the store. I walked to the back to browse the gift wrap. As I made my selection of paper and matching bows, I turned to walk to register and saw the employee standing behind me pretending to be arranging merchandise on a table, while a gentleman was waiting at the register to pay for his items looking around for help. She followed me through the store because I was African American. After she rang up the gentleman, I asked her if she thought I was trying to steal something? She smirked and said "haha it's really hard" what?! I began to educate her on the racial profiling she just did and that I was a longtime customer as she could see from my rewards account (name, phone number, etc.) I told her I did not deserve to be treated this way just because I am a person of color! I told her she has got to DO BETTER! She replied that she would. Amy's Hallmark needs to retrain its bigoted workers. There is no place for this in Gurnee.
