I did learn about the Smokin' Birds last year, from TJ the co-owner, so this review may be biased. We are staying for the weekend near Bala, and since they have just restarted service, decided to try them out.
Smokin' Birds is roadside trailer, with some picnic tables and food is in takeout containers. There is a washroom with running water etc. so it is certainly a step above the traditional roadside stall.
The fare is the standard mix of traditional southern BBQ, and we got the brisket, 1/2 rack of pork ribs, small portion of potato salad and a side of fries.
The brisket was juicy, just the right amount of fat, soft but not falling apart. The rack of ribs was one of the best - perfectly cooked - soft that it came right off the bones; but somehow held its structure perfectly. The bbq sauce was next level - a blend of spice, sweet and tangy - went well with the meats and the fries.
The potato salad was next level - with cucumber and carrot, it was a blend of flavours that we have not had before, which worked so well. We got the right portion, but maybe we should get some more for the road on the way out.
If you are in the area, this is well worth the stop. read more
