There were a few combos rib + meat combos that came with sides included but all drinks were ordered separately so the cost definitely added up quickly. The service was polite, friendly, and quick with an interesting walk-up to order system, with them bringing your food to you once you're sat. The ambiance was a bit eclectic and wasn't quite what we were expecting, but it did the job and didn't take away from our experience. Tables are small and only fit about 4 but there's plenty of open space in the restaurant that I'm sure you could push a table together if needed. Bathrooms were clean!

I mean it isn't like the slow cooker is anywhere nearby or that they've got room for even a green egg up in the truck. We caught Smoke Et Al outside Yazoo Taproom on a recent Friday night (they're Friday night regulars outside Yazoo or Jackalope - which are barely a block from each other). The main menu consists of 1/3 rack of dry rubbed smoked ribs, smoked pork "ham" burger sandwich, brisket tacos (and for the gluten-free among us they have corn tortillas in addition to the normal flour stuff), and a smoked dry rubbed chicken. As the name suggests everything is smoked.... that includes the veggies that go on each of the mains and includes the side dishes. The beans and the "potato salad" both are the two sides I can recall from memory and both were smoked. So, what'd we have? Well, my taste buds were tantalized by the brisket tacos. Each flavorful smoky bite bathed my mouth in awesome. The brisket was moist and tender as it should be, and the tomatoes (which I would usual just "say no" too) were delightful because of their smoked nature. You could taste a hint of the soft goat cheese and cilantro used as toppings for the tacos. Chin dripping in delicious, I turned to the side of beans that I had chosen as my side with my two tacos. Holy magic beans, Jack, were they ever smoky, onion-y, and fulfilling. Greatly enjoyed by my tummy. My companion also had the aforementioned brisket tacos and also on corn tacos. Her chosen side was the potato salad - which is not what you would expect. Instead it is fresh cut potatoes, smoked until soft like little wedges, and accompanied by applewood smoked bacon bits and onions. Since, I tried 'em, I'll comment for my wife. YES! That's all you need to know. I highly recommend trying out this food truck. I hear they'll be between 3rd and 4th on Broadway during New Year's Eve this year. Give them a whirl.

What really makes this sandwich shine is the sum of all the parts - the bun, red cabbage, giant pile of pulled pork, and the sprinkled seasoning not only looks beautiful but tastes triumphant. It really is a thing of beauty and I almost wanted to stare at it longingly for a great length of time before ruining its appearance. As for the sides. the potato salad was alright but not remarkable. The real star though is the fried okra and 'bama white sauce. The first time I saw it on the chalkboard menu I thought it said 'bomb white sauce. In reality bomb white sauce might be a more apt name because it was really, really, really good. The okra itself left just as much of an impression - long, whole okra (not sliced) with a nice breading and huge salt granules. It was quite delectable. It's a counter service joint; you walk up, order, and then someone runs the food to your table. First off, they asked for a point of service tip; that bugs me when I'm ordering my own food at the counter and fetching my own drinks. The menu is fairly standard for a southern BBA joint; brisket, pulled pork, ribs, turkey, chicken. I am generally suspicious of any place that offers chopped brisket. Brisket is meant to be sliced and enjoyed as a slab of meat, not as a pile of hash. So, the chopped brisket sandwich was out for me. I asked if the brisket platter would be served as slices, and they assured me it was, so I ordered brisket with two sides. They recommended the beans and the Mac 'n cheese, so that's what I went with. They also asked me if I wanted the meat lean, marbled, or half and half; I took that as a good sign, and asked for marbled. They food came out in about 5 mins; just enough time for me to head to the soda fountain and fill my own cup. Maybe they should tip me? On the plus side, the portions were pretty large. I'm guessing that the served at least 6-8 ounces of brisket, and the individual sides were pretty large as well. On the other hand, whoever sliced the brisket simply didn't know what they were doing. They sliced it WITH the grain, producing slices full of stringy meat. Stringy meat that was hard to cut with the plastic cutlery provided. I find it hard to believe that anyone who regularly serves BBQ brisket doesn't know to cut the meat against the grain. The meat appeared to feature a nice bark; however, on further exploration, a) the bark was so tough that it couldn't be cut as all with the plastic cutlery, and b) when I tore into it with my fingers and ate a piece, it had no taste. Not even a basic Texas salt and pepper rub could be detected. A large portion of tasteless, poorly cut meat does no one any favors. The beans were a little underdone; IMHO, that's far better than mushy, overcooked beans. However, they, too, had no flavor. No spice, nada. The mac and cheese was shells in a white cheese sauce. Strike 3; zero flavor for the sauce. I don't know how you can make cheese sauce without flavor, but they managed to do so. I have never, ever thrown as much food away at a a BBQ joint than I did today. What a shame. Not recommended, not even a little bit. Try Martin's or Edley's; if you prefer a chain, Mission BBQ will do you much better than Hogwood.
