We waited 20 minutes in the drive thru (the only option to order food) just to have the food be wrong and the food substandard to what this place used to be. I ordered pulled chicken barbecue and got chunks of chicken breast with the bag it was in FULL of barbecue sauce. The BBQ is pretty good, BUT it is drive through only. Unless you want to eat on the unheated porch. For the prices they charge you should be able to sit at a table inside. Don't get me wrong the food is good but there is no inside sit down service. The amount of onion rings that they sell is not worth the money. The barbecue I remember from growing up in NC! We are their food 3 times in the week we were in Ashe County. It was delicious everytime. Their pork BBQ is perfectly traditional. Hush puppies and fried okra are delicious too. We didn't have anything we didn't like. They are drive through only but they have their system down because it didn't take us long at all to get our food - and it was hot and fresh! The employees were hard working and friendly. We were going to stop in for lunch two days ago, but the signs were confusing and we weren't sure if they were open or not. We went there tonight, and they are definitely open. They are very short staffed, so they are not providing table service inside the restaurant. You drive-through and order your food, pick it up, and then either take it home to eat, or eat it in your car in the parking lot, or you can bring it inside and sit at a table and eat it. The staff are really nice folks, just very short on staff right now and trying hard to make it all work. My wife and I each had the pulled pork barbecue sandwich plate. The food was delicious, and they have a variety of sauces you can get. We went with the basic western North Carolina tomato based barbecue sauce. All our side items were amazing: macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, onion, rings, and baked beans. We even got pie for dessert. Excellent! This worked out really good because we were staying at a rental home up in the mountains, and storms were inbound. So we got a great meal, and it worked out better for us to actually get it and go, so we could be back home before the rain hit. read more

We used to get their fried chicken, but we think the recipe changed and now it's more skin than meat. The vegetables are good, especially the cabbage when they have it, which is rarely. If your restaurant name has the word barbecue in it and you're located in North Carolina, you better have good barbecue. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed by Smoky Mountain's pulled pork BBQ. It was incredibly dry (even after I slathered it with vinegar sauce), and the taste was just ok. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The ribs, on the other hand, were fall-off-the-bone, saucy, and delicious. I would definitely the ribs, and would be open to trying other meats here, but just not the pulled pork again. I also tried the hush puppies, mac n cheese, sweet potato fries, and fried okra. All were pretty standard, except the sweet potato fries were soggy. Nothing worth elaborating on. Given that the options in West Jefferson aren't extravagant, Smoky Mountain Barbecue isn't a bad place to eat. Your order cafeteria-style at a counter, and get served your food on a tray. Stopped into Smoky Mountain Barbecue on a Saturday for lunch with a big group (15 of us). I was worried about all of us finding space to eat but was overjoyed to see 2 long tables to the right of the door that sat 15. It was fate! We got in line at the counter and looked over the menu. I ended up going with the large BBQ plate with mac and cheese and sweet potato fries. By the time I got to the end of the service line most of my food was waiting for me (the sweet potato fries were brought out to me a bit later). The soda machine had RC cola on tap. . . ON TAP!!! BBQ was tender and moist. Of the two sauces available, I preferred the thicker one and even slathered it on top of my hush puppies and dipped my fries in it. . . yea. . . it was real good. There are two sauces for your sampling; a sweet vinegar sauce and a red tomato based sauce. The vinegar was flavorful though I would have appreciated a bit more heat... A more than adequate representative of eastern NC. The red sauce was sweet and smoky with several layers of subtle flavors my palette is not sophisticated enough to identify. Fried chicken was off the chain and sides were good. Though the Brunswick stew needed a little less sweet. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone asking.
