Cleanest place in all of Ashe County, look the health inspector gives it a 97! You won't find a place cleaner! This is the real deal. Let's be clear about my perspective for Japanese restaurants: I'm from the Pacific Coast where Japanese food is cooked, served, and owned by an Asian family (not necessarily Japanese). Oshu likely is not that. No sushi, no tempura, no sticky white rice. But based on the reviews here, it fills a gap. When we went there it was busy. We sat down and ordered hot sake and a Pepsi. A few beer and wines selections. The atmosphere is generically Asian. They've done some cool things with the lights so it's nice. We ordered for lunch steak and shrimp. Came with soup which was tasty. The meal came out quickly and was not what you would expect from a Japanese restaurant. Cubbed steak, tiny shrimp (not deveined) carrots (overcooked), brown rice and a big bowl of a some dip (pink mayo sauce). The steak was cut into cubes and tasted fine. Oshu has a fan base. Inexpensive, decent serving size, good service. Local favorite. read more

I'm a firm believer that your experience of a restaurant is tightly linked to your expectations of that restaurant. So let's set the expectation upfront: Oshu is not a place I would take a first date; it's not a place I would celebrate an anniversary. Oshu is flannel. Oshu is casual, friendly and consistent. I've been going here for many years and I've never been disappointed. It's where I pickup takeout with my parents or I take my toddler to dine in where I know I'll be welcome even if I'm a bit sweaty after a day on the parkway. Where else can you get a large and filling meal for $10.50? The food is not gourmet, no, but it is always delicious and comforting. The vegetables are crisp and flavorful; the carrots may not have crunch, but they are sweet and delicious. The upgraded dining room is friendly, the service is always great. They have high chairs, and are patient with rambunctious kids. They have craft beers for $5 and under every day of the week. I just really like this place. read more

Restarting was clean and quiet with plenty of open seating. We were helped immediately and the food came out shockingly fast. The carrots were amazing. Hibachi was exactly what you'd expect. Everything seemed very fresh if a touch bland. read more

We started with Spring Rolls and Crab Rangoon but we ate the spring rolls too quickly. The food was honestly very good as was the service. I didn't really see this as a typical Japanese restaurant as many Japanese favorites were missing. However, the food was really quite delicious so keep doing what you're doing. Hubby and I struggled with this rating. We would like to give it 3.5. We ordered take-out, so we can't comment much on the service or the dining experience. We were, though, happy with our experience with placing a phone order and picking up exactly what we ordered, on time, and piping hot. The food...well we classified it as "tasty". If you are looking for gourmet fare, this isn't it, but it was pretty good , just not over the top delicious. Good points: It was a good value. Prices were reasonable. Portion sizes were about right. Shrimp cooked perfectly. Everything was hot. Suggested improvements: use fresh carrots. These were either frozen or canned and were mushy. Add more fresh veggies and less rice. Kick up the soup a notch or two. It tasted fine, but was honestly just broth with teeny tiny bits floating on top. The picture I took of the miso soup looks better than it was in person. Those tofu pieces were teeny tiny! My soup had only one thin mushroom slice. Overall, we definitely were not disappointed, but we were not "wowed" by the food either. Reasonably tasty at a good price pretty much sums up our experience. We wouldn't crave it, and it wouldn't be our first choice, but we would be okay with getting food here again. read more

If you're not going to be open on Tuesday any longer how about updating your website and the hours posted on your window??Drove up from Wilkesboro only to find out from some guy sitting outside your open back door that you're CLOSED on Tuesdays!!! I know everyone needs time off. I completely understand. Plus, we drove through town looking for somewhere else to eat other than fast food. OMG there was nothing open. Missed opportunities for you since you have really good food. With the cost of gas, VERY frustrating to drive there and turn around with no dinner!!! read more

Consistency is important for any business. Compared to almost ALL of the other restaurants in the area, this place is consistenly excellent.

This restaurant seems to be a local favorite. It's basic, tasty hibachi fare. No surprises. Service was quick and restaurant was clean.

Always fresh, and delicious. This has become one of our staple restaurants while in town. We love all of the menu options but always fall to the classic Teriyaki chicken or steak dishes. The location recently went through a major renovation and is always very clean. To go orders are prompt and always hot. Great to have this food option in our small town! read more
