My husband got the vanilla latte and that was great as well, as I saw they use monin syrups. Our second time I tried a caramel pumpkin and he got the lavender cloud (specialty) with an apple cinnamon muffin warmed up. The apple chunks and goo were amazing. we stopped by for an iced coffee, an iced latte, and a ham and cheese croissant. the croissant didn't make it into my photo, but my boyfriend really enjoyed it and said it was delicious. the drinks, on the other hand, were just okay. nothing was necessarily wrong with them, but they didn't stand out enough to make me want to come back specifically for the coffee. what i did love was the atmosphere. despite having a steady stream of customers, the cafe stayed calm and relaxed. it's located in a quiet neighborhood, has outdoor seating, and just has an overall pleasant vibe. the woman who took our order was also genuinely friendly, which made the visit even nicer. i really liked the area and the feel of the cafe. i just don't think i'd return for the drinks alone. read more

I've visited several times since they opened to give the opportunity for improvement, but truthfully I never enjoy coming here. It's unfortunate because it is the closest coffee shop to me by far. The staff is pretty much always rude. They're not pleasant to speak to and are often unhelpful. I've seen one male barista in the last several years that I thought was pleasant but that was more that he didn't just stare at me/not respond when I spoke like the other employees I've encountered. Also basic customer service pleasantries are often not done. For example, I got an iced latte today and a sandwich that I wanted to enjoy on the patio. Even though I was dining in, I still had to wait at the pick up counter for my order... there were upwards of 5 employees and they don't offer to bring your food or drink to you for a dine in experience. Not the end of the world, but just an odd decision when it's such an easy service to offer. Even before that, the woman who took my order effectively did not speak to me at all other than to tell me the cost. On top of that, the latte was given to me unmixed, so my first sip through the straw was legitimately straight syrup. As for the good, the coffee/drink quality has GREATLY improved over the years. The food is also really good. The space isn't half bad and on a quieter day is actually really nice to do some studying or work. Overall, I wish this business prioritized the way they treat their customers much more. The unfortunate thing is the owner (I think) is often there and she seems to have really great rapport with the staff and they seem kind to each other, but I almost never see that kindness given back to the customer. When I arrived, I was told that only service dogs were allowed. Sat outside on the patio (which was fine) and the manager came to apologize for the confusion (with treats). I go here for the tea. They use loose tea, so no plastic or nylon tea bags that dump microplastics into your tea to worry about. The food and baked items are all excellent. The staff is friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is cozy (Gezellige in Dutch). I highly recommend this establishment. read more

I had a great experience at Smooth Joe this morning. I ordered coffee and set up to work from the common space for a few hours this morning and loved it. The coffee was delicious and beautiful and the ambiance was bustling and smelled of delicious pastries. The only struggle I had was a lack of outlets throughout where the seating areas are, but I made friends with the table next to me and made it work. I will certainly be back soon. read more

I randomly googled a coffee shop near me and literally just drove to the first one I saw. I was sooooo pleasantly surprised by this coffee shop. The aesthetic was so cute, the service was top notch. Everyone was so nice and very helpful. I truly felt like they were happy to serve me. I went to do some work on my laptop. It was quiet enough for me to be able to work which wad great. The coffee was really good and the presentation was so cute! I had a vanilla latte with oat milk. So yummy! I do wish they had more breakfast options. I would've loved a bagel or anything other than a biscuit. They also had lots of gluten free and dairy free options which is something I feel many coffee shops lack. After patiently waiting for this place to open, I finally made it in! The atmosphere was busy, which reminded me of a small coffee shop you would find in NYC. There was a line, but I'd rather stand in line for high demand, verses not. Once I made it up to the counter, I could see that they had a case of gluten free baked goods which was a HUGE sigh of relief. Being GF is hard enough and they had chocolate chip cookies, raspberry bars, cinnamon rolls, and more. They also have a lunch menu and the salads look FRESH! The woman at the counter was extremely kind. Once we ordered we found a small table in the back. It was a rainy day and nothing its the spot like a HOT vanilla latte. It was served to me in a cute mug. My husband got a drip coffee and it was served in a brown mug similar to what you would find in a NYC diner. It felt oddly like home. The coffee was fresh, full of body and delicious. The owners were extremely kind, and stopped to meet us and make conversation. Definitely will be visiting again since it's walking distance from my home, and maybe work out of there with my laptop or bring a good book to read. This place is a little gem. I'm 17 and a freshman in college at Wake Tech. Because of this, I don't have much spare money to spend on coffee. I was having a horrible day and I decided to go to Smooth Joe because I saw they sold 3$ coffees and I wanted to cheer myself up. I always keep spare change in my backpack and I had just enough. I walked in the pouring rain and upon entering counted my coins to double check. I spoke to the kindest older woman at the counter who did not mind I was paying in coins and we cracked a few jokes about what it's like being a broke college student. At the end of the conversation, she told me she upgraded my order for free and I have never felt so much love from an establishment before. It was such a small thing to do, but it seriously made my week. This was my first time going here and you can tell they treat all customers as apart of their family. GLUTEN FREE options! I had a GF cinnamon biscuit and hazelnut oat milk latte. Both were fantastic. You can tell the owners are passionate about coffee because the quality is there and it is good. It's a cute, cheery shop but a little quiet. Personally, I always feel a little more comfortable when there is a hum of music and conversation so you don't feel like everyone is listening to your conversation or you are talking to loud, but that is just me. The ambience of Smooth Joe is really calming, and I've enjoyed coming here between classes as Wake Tech Northern Campus (just a block away) to get a coffee and do some work. They're always super friendly and the house blend roast is really good. Definitely recommend if you want a small place to get away and have a nice drink. read more
