This place is a perfect quiet location . The staff is friendly fast and attentive. Plenty of outside and inside seating and options for coffee . The bakery items are big however they gave them to me cold reason for the negative one star that would have made my experience great to go that one extra step .

I had a great experience at Smooth Joe this morning. I ordered coffee and set up to work from the common space for a few hours this morning and loved it. The coffee was delicious and beautiful and the ambiance was bustling and smelled of delicious pastries. The only struggle I had was a lack of outlets throughout where the seating areas are, but I made friends with the table next to me and made it work. I will certainly be back soon.

Their coffee was okay. Nothing too special. It's still a relatively new business so I'm sure they're working out the kinks. Their sausage egg and cheese biscuit was nice, but the sharp cheddar can be a bit overpowering

I randomly googled a coffee shop near me and literally just drove to the first one I saw. I was sooooo pleasantly surprised by this coffee shop. The aesthetic was so cute, the service was top notch. Everyone was so nice and very helpful. I truly felt like they were happy to serve me. I went to do some work on my laptop. It was quiet enough for me to be able to work which wad great. The coffee was really good and the presentation was so cute! I had a vanilla latte with oat milk. So yummy! I do wish they had more breakfast options. I would've loved a bagel or anything other than a biscuit. They also had lots of gluten free and dairy free options which is something I feel many coffee shops lack. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely come back!

Found this shop while in town for a soccer tournament. Cute decor, reasonably priced. The staff could be somewhat friendlier. Coffee was good, we had a caramel latte and iced sf caramel coffee. Coffee cake had a unique oatmeal crumb topping but it was good and cake was moist.

After patiently waiting for this place to open, I finally made it in! The atmosphere was busy, which reminded me of a small coffee shop you would find in NYC. There was a line, but I'd rather stand in line for high demand, verses not. Once I made it up to the counter, I could see that they had a case of gluten free baked goods which was a HUGE sigh of relief. Being GF is hard enough and they had chocolate chip cookies, raspberry bars, cinnamon rolls, and more. They also have a lunch menu and the salads look FRESH! The woman at the counter was extremely kind. Once we ordered we found a small table in the back. It was a rainy day and nothing its the spot like a HOT vanilla latte. It was served to me in a cute mug. My husband got a drip coffee and it was served in a brown mug similar to what you would find in a NYC diner. It felt oddly like home. The coffee was fresh, full of body and delicious. The owners were extremely kind, and stopped to meet us and make conversation. Definitely will be visiting again since it's walking distance from my home, and maybe work out of there with my laptop or bring a good book to read. This place is a little gem. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Kindest people and the best coffee!

I'm 17 and a freshman in college at Wake Tech. Because of this, I don't have much spare money to spend on coffee. I was having a horrible day and I decided to go to Smooth Joe because I saw they sold 3$ coffees and I wanted to cheer myself up. I always keep spare change in my backpack and I had just enough. I walked in the pouring rain and upon entering counted my coins to double check. I spoke to the kindest older woman at the counter who did not mind I was paying in coins and we cracked a few jokes about what it's like being a broke college student. At the end of the conversation, she told me she upgraded my order for free and I have never felt so much love from an establishment before. It was such a small thing to do, but it seriously made my week. This was my first time going here and you can tell they treat all customers as apart of their family. Not only this, but it was some of the best coffee I've ever had. Thank you so much to the staff of Smooth Joe!!

Very friendly barista and owner. The baked goods looked delicious, so we tried a blueberry muffin. Perfect!

It's a shame that a cafe of this caliber with quality equipment doesn't have house made syrups for their drinks. Coffee was amazing.

Clean and plenty of great seating. Nice decor and friendly staff who were willing to explain all the "moon" language to me. There you have it. Notice I didn't mention coffee. The bad news. If you're a newbie, the menu is very confusing and you have to ask a lot of questions about the names of the drinks. " half moon, quarter moon" etc. I spent 7 minutes asking questions and letting everyone go ahead of me because I didn't understand the drinks. The server was very patient and tried to explain it all to me. The moon is a play on milk, but it is confusing as to what you are getting. Maybe a description under the name would help. Next they had the highest calorie drinks I've ever seen in a coffee shop. I mean everything was about 500+ calories. Of course you can adjust. For taste but calorie counts were super high imo. Next the coffee was just not good. I ordered a toasted s'mores latte. (Sounds delicious right? Well it tasted like chocolate milk. That's it. No notes of coffee or marshmallow. And the ice melted before I got home (25 minutes). My niece enjoyed her drink (strawberry latte, I believe) but she said she didn't taste much strawberry and again the coffee was weak. For $7 and $8 coffee houses have to do better. I expect to taste coffee in a coffee drink. I'll give it one more try if I'm in the area because baristas matter. But if a second time is a no go, then I won't return.

On a nicer day you can sit outside if you prefer. My daughter ordered the waffle with Nutella, and since she wanted syrup, we added the cinnamon glaze. She really enjoyed it. I do wish they had whipped cream as an option because I feel like waffles and whipped cream just go together, but that's honestly a small thing. I ordered the avocado toast with the fried egg on top and also the house-made granola. I did not realize the granola serving was going to be so big, so I definitely over-ordered, but no regrets because everything was so good. The avocado toast was delicious. The bread was soft, fresh, and filling, and the whole thing was just really satisfying. I ended up taking the granola to go, and later that day when I ate it, I was like wow... it was still amazing. Honestly one of the best granola and yogurt bowls I've had. So good. I also got an almond latte. Nothing overly fancy, just a solid latte done well. Staff were friendly and patient, especially with my daughter wanting to order. That always means a lot. Another plus: plenty of parking, and they have two single-stall bathrooms, which is helpful. I also really like the Lafayette Village area in general. After you eat, you can walk around, hang out, and enjoy the area a bit. So it can be a quick coffee stop, or you can make a little outing out of it. Definitely worth checking out.

They are located in a VERY BUSY shopping center. Lots of folks sticking around to hang outdoors in the area. Thankfully I found parking in the lot downstairs in a parking garage with a short walk over. The line was long but moved fast. It was cold and sorta dark inside and crowded compared to it being nice outside, so I chose to sit outside. The courtyard side was packed, so I sat on the parking lot side. Not the best view, but got the job done. They were still serving biscuits, but were no longer serving the oatmeal which was a disappointment. I got the yogurt instead and didn't care for the toppings. My coffee and food came out fast and the biscuit tasted amazing. The biscuit was large, the egg and bacon were perfectly cooked and the iced coffee was delicious. The food is the shining star here. I just wish the ambiance was better. I will be back on a weekday when it's less people to contend with.

Nice viewing area & brewing room potential to rent sq footage for an event. Dynamite smiling face behind the bar. Happy, pleasant, engaging, knowledgeable. A kitchen that's being rented to a mixed variety food menu. We had Gyros. Great quality & great size. Ordering was seamless. They had a little something for everyone. Think food truck without the wheels! Love that they offer 2 on tap ciders (guest taps) and 2 NA options. Things to improve- All breweries do trivia, bingo & karaoke. What's something that is identifying to CRB? Just seems a bit stale to be polite. Loved their live music and guest monthly schedule. Several of the beer (specifically the coffee porter & honey wheat) were high IBU in turn being very bitter. We wanted to love the wheat and the coffee porter but both left us longing for better. So if we are a brewery... be great at that. Why are we a full service liquor bar too? A few options to appease everyone but we were surprised at the bourbon choices. Not only does it look cluttered, it clearly was selected by someone who has a preference for liquor/bourbon vs. a brew master. Maybe do a rotating cocktail list or 4-6 out of this world drinks and cut the rest. Drink prices at this price should not have pre done sour mix in them. Quality liquor should mean quality ingredients too. Big thumbs down on that. We did love the mimosa cocktail idea and the beer-rita with the use of CBR beer. Sames from 6 years ago- Chairs still suck. Parking is a little bit of an adventure but not sure there is a solution but rather just something to plan ahead for. No niche beer... still. We had their newish beers in each category. Overall... Scottish is still a solid choice. Lack of identity/theme/flagship beer (although we were told their IPA was?) Overall this place could be rocking 7 days a week! It's a good place to run by after work or gather a group and play card games, have access to a nibble & drink.

Parking is okay, spots are a tad bit limited but we found a spot just fine mid-day. Outside, there is a play area for kids across from the bar. We wanted to sit outside but it was pretty busy with families so we opted for indoor seating. The inside is pretty open and spacious with plenty of seating. I ordered a flight which was a great way to sample some of the selection. Overall, the beers were good, but not memorable. There was karaoke when we went. It was quite loud and we ended up having to shout at each other to hear one another. Again, this was mid-day, so it was odd to have karaoke going. There were quite a few kids running around, too. One of my biggest complaints about bars in this area is that too many allow kids. My husband and I are DINKS and would love to find a place that's adults-only but it's kind of hard to come by these days. I also personally think it's safer to just leave the kids at home if you're under the influence but that's just my two cents. If you are the type to bring the whole family to the bar for day drinking, you'll enjoy Compass Rose. I think I'll try them again but I'm still on the search for an authentic no-kids allowed bar. Maybe next time, I'll sit in the actual brewery section and see how that goes.
