The building itself is fairly nondescript strip mall outbuilding with a drive thru. Once inside the place was fairly full and lively. The ambiance somewhat matches the outside - standard coffee shop fare. The menu covered all the standard coffee shop offering with pastries, bagels, and some breakfast sandwiches. It's a no for me. They have no menu prices posted, so they can charge you whatever. Asked for a receipt, frappe was already high for the size but they charge extra for things that would normally be standard...like a basic flavor, whip and then they didn't even top it off with a caramel drizzle, but you want to charge for flavor. Does not seem to have good business practices. Would not return, would rather go to nasty Starbucks, and I thought Starbucks was overpriced....Deja brew beats them. My favorite coffee place in North Raleigh. They have a wide range of syrups, desserts, pastries, and drink options. The inside is very cool and funky, with a unique styling situation going on. Plenty of seating inside ( with outlets!!!) and outside. The prices are pretty reasonable I have yet to have a $7 drink from there, so that's a win for me. I will say their hot lattes are a tad on the milky side so if you don't like that I suggest their iced drinks, which are deliciously refreshing. The baristas are always very cheerful and whether I'm in the drive through or inside it's always a quick and pleasant experience. They have day old pastries that are just as good as the fresh ones for a discounted rate, they also have wine, and Ice cream. 'Tis the season for gingerbread lattes! I'd been on the hunt for this holiday drink for a few weeks (not a chain), so after dropping my kitty off at the nearby vet I headed over to see what Deja Brew offered. The drive through lane is extremely narrow and awkwardly shaped so I opted to go inside. I was not greeted quickly and when the cashier did ask what she could get me it was pretty lackluster. I don't know if it's early or something, but they did not have many holiday drinks and the seasonal drinks they were offering were still pumpkin flavored. Look for the syrups on the shelf behind the cash register for flavors you can add to lattes or mochas. I got a nonfat latte and added gingerbread syrup. It was pretty good. I ask for my drinks extra hot and this certainly met the criteria. They have a selection of pastries, non-coffee drinks, and ground/whole bean coffee you can purchase. I just had a very unpleasant experience ordering from this coffee house. Once I made it to the drive-thru, their menu is completely different from their website. Because I am visiting from out of town, I asked questions once I realized their menu was completely different. The lady started getting attitude with me. It's noisy in there plus she was extremely soft-spoken. It was very hard for me to understand it. Instead, I drove straight to the window and was speaking to a different lady. As I am trying to figure out their menu on my phone (and by the way, the drive-thru was not busy at all as I was the only person there), I noticed that she looked at her other coworker and gave an annoyance look and gestured with her shoulders and hands while shaking her head. I kindly asked to please not to do that in front of a customer again. I understand she was frustrated with me but she was not helping me either. The menu looked completely different from their menu on THEIR website! I came prepared with everything written down. I had to completely change my order on the spot. Then I asked a question regarding another drink that was indeed on their menu. She looked me like I had no idea what I was talking about. And proceeded to have that annoyance look on her face again. I went Deja Brew because it was convenient to my sons school. I had always seen it and wanted to stop there and I am really happy that I did. When I first walked in I was impressed with the guy that was taking orders he seemed to remember everyone's name that came in. I immediately noticed the pictures on the wall they are adorned with Jazz & Blues Players. I would consider the place very cozy just because of the sitting. They have furniture as well as regular tables with chairs just depending on what you are looking for. I ended up ordering the funky monkey (I think that's the name) and some banana bread. I paid about $7 for both. The drink was really good. The bathroom was really clean and well put together. The staff was very open to giving me the WiFi password. They all seemed really nice. This place has been amazing for years, but in the last month, they've squandered all the goodwill they've built up in the community. I'm a laptop user who's gone to Deja Brew multiple times a week for the past year, usually spending $20-$25 a day once you factor in the employee tips. It's a rare week when I spend less than $100 here. A few days ago, I arrived to discover that the best laptop-friendly table (my usual table) has been removed and replaced with, of all things, a crane machine and a sit-down video game. Any other tables with power outlets have had their power outlets blocked off with boxes so you can't access them. The message was clear: no matter how much money you've spent here, or how loyal of a customer you've been, you're no longer welcome if you use a laptop. Okay, noted. I'll never go back. I've heard reports of other loyal customers being asked not to return after they complained about being overcharged for something. So they're banning people who point out that they got charged $4.75 when the sign says $4.25, and who ask to be charged the correct price instead? It's a pity the place is falling apart, because the staff has been terrific every time I've been there. But these new policies are horrendous. I know several other loyal customers who've noticed the decline. Several groups who meet here recently have let me know that they're looking for a new spot as well. I've found one. This is a nice comfortable little coffee shop with a cozy atmosphere. I've seen this place for years but never stopped until today. The shop offers a very large menu offering many hot and cold options, along with several "non coffee" options, as well as lots of baked goods. They also have a lot of flavoring options to add to any drink, which was a nice option to have choice outside of vanilla, chocolate, and caramel. The whole bean coffee comes from Washington state, and the espresso beans are from a local place here in Raleigh. The staff was very nice. Sadly I was not as impressed as I had hoped to be with the coffee. If we like the coffee shops coffee, we usually will buy bags of their whole beans to take home with us; this coffee was a pass. We ordered a hot vanilla caramel latte with a shot of butter rum flavor, and the barista recommended one of her favorites which was English toffee latte with a shot of Italian eggnog (the egg nog flavor was not her recommendation, but my husband wanted to try it) . Both our coffees were luke warm and we had to request that they be heated up in the microwave. My hot latte was very watery tasting, and after I added 2 packs of sugar, tasted like butter rum water. If I hadn't been at a coffee shop, I would have questioned it even having coffee in it. Very rarely will I not finish a coffee I just paid $5 for, but this was one of those times. The eggnog toffee brought memories to my husband of milk of magnesium and barely any coffee taste . We ended up adding powered nutmeg, cinnamon, and some whole milk to make the drink palpable. Needless to say this is not going to be a place we visit again. I am giving it a 3 star because it was a clean and nice place, and in a pinch, it would do if you need a coffee fix. read more
