I ate one that appeared fresh, but the next morning I opened the second container and found several strawberries heavily covered with mold. Visible mold on soft fruits is a food safety concern, not just a cosmetic issue. Mold spreads microscopic spores, and contamination is often present before it becomes visible. That's why food safety guidance generally recommends discarding moldy berries rather than picking out the bad ones. When I returned the moldy container along with the empty container from the berries I had already eaten, the refund was processed, but the manager's primary response was to tell me that empty containers would not be accepted for refunds in the future. The bigger issue wasn't the refund policy. It was the lack of concern that I had already consumed strawberries from what appeared to be the same compromised batch. I expected someone to ask about my well-being and inspect the remaining inventory, not focus first on the return policy. Whole Foods has built its reputation on premium-quality produce. I hope this store strengthens both its fresh fruit quality control and its food safety training for customer service staff.

Though I am only inclined to run when it involves the acquisition of killer shoes on clearance or the last piece of a rich dessert, I was nonetheless fascinated by this book about the Tarahumara, a tribe of super-runners who regularly feast on chia fresca, a nutrient-dense drink that is said to be one of the keys to their extraordinary endurance. Chia fresca is a cocktail of fresh water, lemon juice, chia seeds and sweetener (preferably something natural like agave syrup). In the naive hope that this "natural cocaine" might replace my morning caffeine ritual, I ambled into GNC one day during my lunch hour. I was met by a strikingly attractive woman just as she finished helping another customer. She was tan with gleaming silver-blonde hair and piercing green eyes. She quickly revealed that she was in her 50's and I stared at her in awe. Before devolving into cheesy conversation ("I'll have whatever she's having"), I asked her about the infamous chia seeds. She pointed me in the right direction and told me about the different varieties (black, white, organic and non). She asked me what my objective was (more energy) and then made a few other suggestions. As always, I snapped pics of the products she recommended so that I would remember them for possible future purchases. I also asked about maca root because I had read in some Amazon.com reviews that it had similar health benefits. She located a bottle of maca root supplements (as opposed to the powder form I'd read about) and winked at me as she placed it on the counter. "Sometimes you need help with energy in that department too," she said slyly. "Uh, what," I stammered. "Maca root amps up your sex drive," she said evenly. "Oh, well uhh, I'm not really having any problems with that kind of thing," I said, my mind racing. (Damn you, Amazon reviewers with your nefarious ways!!) I sheepishly pushed the maca root up to the counter beside my chia seeds (what the hell!) and she rang up my purchases. We talked pleasantly for the next few minutes about anti-aging strategies and discovered that we had used the same smooth-talking doc for ho-hum botox injections. We laughed at our similar observations and she gave me her card, telling me to call if I ever had any questions. I left the store feeling happy about my purchases and looking forward to a return visit. Side note: Chia fresca may be good for you, but it will not replace your morning cup(s) of coffee nor will it ever be endorsed by Charlie Sheen. No tiger blood here, but I remain inspired by both the Tarahumara and the otherworldly beauty of that GNC manager.

Kunafa for those who don't know is shredded phyllo dough which is layered with cheese and baked to give it that crispy texture yet having the stretchy pull from the cheese. The combination of this savory Kunafa with the booza really makes it a delectable combo. The Turkish + Dubai chocolate Kunafa (half and half) has been my favorite but they have a few options to try. They also server Dubai chocolate and strawberry cups, which seem to be extremely popular too. We've tried their chai (tea) and Turkish coffee and all I can say is that I am hooked. The vibe is lively and a little crowded at peak times, but in a good way - it feels like everyone is there for the same sugar fix. Staff was friendly and happy to explain the menu, which helps if you're new to these kinds of desserts. Service can vary depending on how busy it is, but overall it's worth the stop. She had only made enough for 1 and a half smoothies, not two. I didn't say anything, I just watched to see how this would be handled. The young man instructed her to take the half drink, pour it back into the blender and to add more product...not ice That's when I interrupted, and asked to see the other smoothie. Why, because I watched her add ingredients from the beginning and she had all the ingredients and measurements correct, I think she just didn't add enough ice. I tried to tell the two young innocent kids but I was interrupted by the (I think) manager. The manager over talked me the whole time loudly saying...WE ARE GOING TO MAKE YOU ANOTHER SMOOTHIE. I kept trying to explain but was met with dismissive responses. She just wasn't listening nor trying to understand what I was saying. Because she was making a scene, I politely asked her if she would come closer to me so I can explain and she didn't want to do that. She was so dismissive that I just gave up. She walked to the register to finish ringing up customers and I saw her roll her eyes with irritation. I was so confused, I was trying to explain that I didn't want to waste the first batch of smoothies, just to add ice but somehow I was the problem. I gave up, they thru out perfectly good smoothies, I stood there with disbelief and disappointment. I can honestly say that, I was so offended and upset but I had to get control of my emotions because it was very clear that I wasn't the problem. In my 47 years here on earth I have learned that sometimes it's not me. That lady clearly had to be having a overwhelming hectic day or is just a mean, dismissive and impatient person but either way it doesn't feel good to be treated that way especially when I come to that location often if I'm not traveling. I will say this, out of the 15 plus times of coming there, I've never seen her before. I am giving 3 stars because other than this lady/manager, I never had an issue. If she is reading this, I hope you are having a better day than the day we interacted and now realize how you turned a fixable mistake into an unnecessary issue.
